INTRODUCTION This Gatenet CompactFlash MicroLAN Card is designed for Window CE-based palm-sized PCs, pocket PC, handheld PCs and any computer with a CompactFlash slot. The Gatenet CompactFlash MicroLAN Card is easy to install, and no external power is required. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS For Windows CE-based PDA/Palm PC: ■ A Type I or Type II CompactFlash Slot supporting I/O functionality. ■ Windows CE 2.X or newer version ■ Windows CE Service Disk ■ CF+ and CompactFlash Spec. Reversion 1.4 compliant Card Services and Socket Services OPERATING ENVIORNMENTS For Windows CE-based PDA/Palm PC: Software Compatibility Windows CE 2.X or newer version Hardware Compatibility for Processor Families: Supports PDA/Palm PC using MIPS4000 series, Hitachi Sh3 series, Intel Strong ARM Series, and Hitachi Sh4 series processors.
HARDWARE INSTALLATION It’s referred to “the Compact Card” for the Gatenet CompactFlash Micro LAN Card. Inserting the CompactFlash Micro LAN Card 1. Insert the “CompactFlash Size Micro LAN Card” into Windows CE-based PDA/Palm PC by aligning the Compact Card with wide connector toward the CompactFlash slot.
CONNECTING TO THE NETWORK This section describes how to install the “CompactFlash Micro LAN Card” using a Pocket PC. What is needed: ● Any NE2000 compatible network operating system ● PC with Win95, Win98, Win2000, Windows NT 4.0 ● ActiveSync 3.1 ● Ethernet Interface Card for PC ● PocketPC CompactFlash card ● Ethernet Hub or crossover cable PC Configuration: Configure you PC for Ethernet and install the client for Microsoft Networks and the TCP/IP protocol. Before using Ethernet, install ActiveSync 3.1 on the PC. For our example, the PC’s IP address is 211.116.132.59. Pocket PC Configuration 1. Establish a partnership using a serial cable, infrared or USB connection to the PC with ActiveSync installed. 2. Configure the Network Control Panel for Ethernet on your Pocket PC. a. Click Start b. Click Settings c. Click Connections d. Click Network
e. Click Gatenet CF MicroLAN Driver f. If you have a static IP address, enter the IP address for the Pocket PC and subnet mask. For example, use the IP address of 211.116.132.59 with a subnet mask 211.116.132.59. Leave the other fields blank. Otherwise, click on Use server-assigned IP address if you have DHCP server installed. g. Click on Name Server. If you are using static IP address, enter DNS numbers and WINS server address provided by Network Administrator. If you do not have WINS server installed, use the IP address of the PC (For example, our PC’s IP address is 211.116.0.1. *Note: This is NOT the IP address of your Pocket PC).
Synchronizing Plug both the Pocket PC and the PC into the hub. If using a crossover cable, connect Pocket PC directly to PC. Select ActiveSync on Pocket PC and make sure the method is Network Connection and the Connect To matches the PC computer’s name. Click Connect to start ActiveSync communications. This will allow your Pocket PC to stay up-to-date, download new email, tasks, contacts and other files and data whenever it is connected to you desktop. For more information, please refer to the Help Files located within the Pocket PC. Note To remove the CompactFlash MicroLAN Card, refer to the Compact Card removal instruction in the document for your PDA/Palm PC. Windows CE 2.X setup This section describes how to install the “Gatenet CompactFlash MicroLAN Card” on a Palm-sized PC, handheld PC based on Windows CE Version 2.X. 1. Establish a connection between a Windows CE based PDA/Palm PC and your Host PC, typically the Host PC runs under Windows9X/NT. 2. Install “ActiveSync” connection from the WinCE Services CD to your desktop PC. For more information, refer to the Online help. 3. Connect the PDA/Palm PC to the Host PC COM1, COM2, or USB port with the correct cables. 4. Once the connection between Host PC and PDA/Palm PC is established, an “Mobile device” icon will appear inside “My Computer” folder of your Host PC.
5. Insert Disk “Gatenet CompactFlash MicroLAN Card for WinCE”. Use “Windows Explorer” to open files directories in A: Then double click on the directory A: disk and look for setup file “setup.exe”. Please Execute the setup file. 6. Insert the Compact Card and reset the PDA/Palm PC thereafter. Then configure your Compact LAN Card as follows. 7. Double click on “Network”, select “Properties” and choose “Obtain an IP address through DHCP server”. At this time, you should see “Gatenet CF Micro LAN Card” installed and appearing in the WinCE screen. 8. If your local LAN doesn’t run DHCP, you may have to manually configure the IP address under “Specify an IP address” option. Note: Host PC’s running Windows 95 OSR2 cannot active sync after entering suspend mode. If the machine goes into suspend, it will need to be reset in order to active sync with the handheld device.
