Introduction
TM
The D-Link AirPlusXtremeG DWL-G650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter is an enhanced
802.11g high-performance, wireless adapter that supports high-speed wireless networking
at home, at work or in public places.
Unlike most network cards, the DWL-G650 provides speeds of up to 54 Mbps (compared
to the standard 11 Mbps) when used with other D-Link AirXtremeG products. The 802.11g
standard is backwards compatible with 802.11b products. This means that you do not
need to change your entire network to maintain connectivity. You may sacrifice some of
802.11g’s speed when you mix 802.11b and 802.11g devices, but you will not lose the
ability to communicate when you incorporate the 802.11g standard into your 802.11b
network. You may choose to slowly change your network by replacing the 802.11b
devices with 802.11g devices gradually.
In addition to offering faster data transfer speeds when used with other 802.11g products,
the DWL-G650 has the newest, strongest, most advanced security features available
today. When used with other 802.11g WPA (WiFi Protected Access) and 802.1x
compatible products in a network with a radius server, the security features include:
WPA:
A new security feature, Wi-Fi Protected Access authorizes and identifies users
based on a secret key that changes automatically at a regular interval. (By
contrast, the older WEP encryption required the keys to be changed manually.)
802.1x: Authentication is a first line of defense against intrusion. In the
Authentication process the server verifies the identity of the client attempting
to connect to the network. Unfamiliar clients would be denied access.
TKIP: Temporal Key Integrity Protocol changes the temporal key every 10,000
packets ( a packet is a kind of message transmitted over a network.) This
insures much greater security than the standard WEP security.
AES: Advanced Encryption Standard offers much larger key sizes. At 128, 192,
or 256 bits, the AES keys are much stronger than the old WEP standard of
56 bits. It could take 149 trillion years to crack the code of an AES key, as
opposed to 1 second to crack an old WEP key.
For home users that will not incorporate a radius server in their network, the security for
the DWL-G650, used in conjunction with other 802.11g products, will be much stronger
than ever before. Utilizing the Pre Shared Key mode the DWL-G650 will obtain a new
security key every time it connects to the 802.11g network. You only need to input your
encryption information once in the configuration menu. No longer will you have to manually
input a new WEP key frequently to ensure security, with the DWL-G650, you will
automatically receive a new key every time you connect, vastly increasing the safety of
your communications.
The DWL-G650 is compatible with existing 802.11b devices such as the D-Link Air,
AirPlus and AirPro family of products including the DWL-520, DWL-520+ and the
DWL-AB520 Wireless PCI Adapter, the DI-714 Wireless Router/Access Point and the
DWL-120 Wireless USB Adapter. (When used with 802.11b devices, the DWL-G650
will reach speeds at up to 11Mbps.)
It is an ideal way to connect one laptop computer to a Wireless Local Area Network
(WLAN.) After completing the steps outlined in the Quick Installation Guide
(included in the package) you will have the ability to share information and resources,
such as files and printers, and take full advantage of a “connected” environment for
work or play!
The DWL-G650 includes software drivers for the most popular Microsoft Windows
operating systems (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows 98) and can
be integrated into a larger network, running, in either Ad Hoc mode (without an
Access Point) or Infrastructure mode (with an Access Point.) Please take a look at
our Getting Started section in this manual to see examples of typical network setups
using the DWL-G650 in both Infrastructure and Ad-Hoc modes.
This manual provides a quick introduction to wireless technology and its application
as it relates to networking. Take a moment to read through this manual and get
acquainted with wireless technology.

Wireless Basics
D-Link wireless products are based on industry standards to provide easy-touse and compatible high-speed wireless connectivity within your home, business
or public access wireless networks. Strictly adhering to the IEEE standard, the
D-Link wireless family of products will allow you to securely access the data
you want, when and where you want it. You will be able to enjoy the freedom
that wireless networking delivers.
A wireless local area network (WLAN) is a cellular computer network that
transmits and receives data with radio signals instead of wires. Wireless LANs
are used increasingly in both home and office environments, and public areas
such as airports, coffee shops and universities. Innovative ways to utilize WLAN
technology are helping people to work and communicate more efficiently.
Increased mobility and the absence of cabling and other fixed infrastructure
have proven to be beneficial for many users.
Wireless users can use the same applications they use on a wired network.
Wireless adapter cards used on laptop and desktop systems support the same
protocols as Ethernet adapter cards.
Under many circumstances, it may be desirable for mobile network devices to
link to a conventional Ethernet LAN in order to use servers, printers or an Internet
connection supplied through the wired LAN. A Wireless Router is a device
used to provide this link.
Wireless Basics (continued)
People use wireless LAN technology for many different purposes:
Mobility - Productivity increases when people have access to data in any
location within the operating range of the WLAN. Management decisions based
on real-time information can significantly improve worker efficiency.
Low Implementation Costs – WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) are
easy to set up, manage, change and relocate. Networks that frequently change,
both physically and logically, can benefit from WLANs ease of implementation.
WLANs can operate in locations where installation of wiring may be impractical.
Installation Speed and Simplicity - Installing a wireless LAN system can
be fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and
ceilings.
Network Expansion - Wireless technology allows the network to go
where wires cannot.
Scalability – Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) can be configured in a
variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific applications or existing
infrastructures. Configurations are easily changed and range from peer-topeer networks suitable for a small number of users to larger infrastructure
networks to accommodate hundreds or thousands of users, depending on the
number of wireless devices deployed.
The DWL-G650 is also compatible with 802.11b wireless products, which include:
„ 2.4GHz Wireless Cardbus Adapters used with laptop computers
(D-Link Air DWL-650, D-Link AirPlus DWL-650+)
„ 2.4GHz Wireless PCI cards used with desktop computers
(D-Link Air DWL-520, D-Link AirPlus DWL-520+)
„ Enhanced 2.4GHz Wireless Access Point
(D-Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+)
„ Enhanced 2.4GHz Wireless Broadband Router
(D-Link AirPlus DI-614+)
Wireless Basics (continued)
Standards-Based Technology
The DWL-G650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter utilizes the new 802.11g standard.
The IEEE 802.11g standard is an extension of the 802.11b standard. It increases
the data rate up to 54 Mbps within the 2.4GHz band, utilizing OFDM technology.
This means that in most environments, within the specified range of this device,
you will be able to transfer large files quickly or even watch a movie in MPEG
format over your network without noticeable delays. This technology works by
transmitting high-speed digital data over a radio wave utilizing OFDM (Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology. OFDM works by splitting the radio
signal into multiple smaller sub-signals that are then transmitted simultaneously
at different frequencies to the receiver. OFDM reduces the amount of crosstalk
(interference) in signal transmissions. The D-Link DWL-G650 will automatically
sense the best possible connection speed to ensure the greatest speed and
range possible.
802.11g offers the most advanced network security features available today,
including: WPA, 802.1x, TKIP, AES and Pre-Shared Key mode. These security
features are explained in more detail in the Introduction and the Features section
of this manual.
The DWL-G650 is backwards compatible with 802.11b devices. This means
that if you have an existing 802.11b network, the devices in that network will be
compatible with 802.11g devices at speeds up to 11Mbps in the 2.4GHz range.
Also based on the IEEE 802.11b standard, the DWL-G650 is interoperable with
existing compatible 2.4GHz wireless technology with data transfer speeds of
up to 11Mbps.
Wireless Basics (continued)
Installation Considerations
The D-Link AirExtreme DWL-G650 lets you access your network, using a
wireless connection, from virtually anywhere. Keep in mind, however, that the
number, thickness and location of walls, ceilings, or other objects that the
wireless signals must pass through, may limit the range. Typical ranges vary
depending on the types of materials and background RF (radio frequency)
noise in your home or business. The key to maximizing wireless range is to
follow these basic guidelines:
1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the DWL-G650 and
other network devices to a minimum - each wall or ceiling can reduce
your D-Link AirExtreme Wireless product’s range from 3-90 feet (1-30
meters.) Position your devices so that the number of walls or ceilings is
minimized.
2. Be aware of the direct line between network devices. A wall that is
1.5 feet thick (.5 meters), at a 45-degree angle appears to be almost 3
feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2-degree angle it looks over 42 feet (14 meters)
thick! Try to make sure that devices are positioned so that the signal will
travel straight through a wall or ceiling for better reception.
3. Building Materials make a difference - a solid metal door or aluminum
studs may have a negative effect on range. Try to position wireless
devices and computers with wireless adapters so that the signal passes
through drywall or open doorways and not other materials.
4. Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from electrical
devices or appliances that generate RF noise.
10
Getting Started
There are basically two modes of networking:
„
Infrastructure – using an Access Point, such as the
DWL-900AP.
„
Ad-Hoc – directly connecting to another computer, for peer-topeer communication, using wireless network adapters on
each computer, such as two or more DWL-G650 wireless
network Cardbus adapters.
On the following pages we will show you an example of an Infrastructure
Network and an Ad-Hoc Network.
An Infrastructure network contains an Access Point or Router. To utilize the
full features of the DWL-G650 you will need to include a radius server in your
network. The Infrastructure Network example shown on the following page
contains the following D-Link network devices (your existing network may be
comprised of other devices):
„
A wireless Access Point - D-Link Air 900AP
„
A laptop computer with a wireless adapter D-Link AirPro DWL-G650
„
A desktop computer with a wireless adapter D-Link Air DWL-520
(802.11b devices have speeds up to 11Mbps)
„
A Cable modem - D-Link DCM-200

Set the wireless configuration for the adapters to Ad-Hoc mode, set
the adapters to the same channel, and assign an IP Address to
each computer on the Ad-Hoc network. (See Box below)
IP Address
When assigning IP Addresses to the computers on the network, please
remember that the IP Address for each computer must be in the same
IP Address range as all the computers in the network, and the subnet
mask must be exactly the same for all the computers in the network.
For example: If the first computer is assigned an IP Address of 192.168.0.2
with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0, then the second computer can be
assigned an IP Address of 192.168.0.3 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0,
etc.
IMPORTANT: If computers or other devices are assigned the same IP
Address, one or more of the devices may not be visible on the network.

2. I cannot connect to the access point or the wireless router.
„
Make sure that the SSID on the DWL-G650 Cardbus adapter is
exactly the same as the SSID on the Access Point or wireless
router.
„
Move the DWL-G650 and Access Point or Wireless router into
the same room and then test the wireless connection.
„
Disable all security settings. (WEP, MAC Address Control, AES)
„
Make sure that the Radio is not locked down to a different
frequency
„
Turn off your Access Point and the computer with the DWLG650. Turn on the Access Point, and then turn on the computer
with the DWL-G650.
„
Refresh the DWL-G650 Utility
3. The DWL-G650 Power and Link lights are not on.
„
Check to see if the DWL-G650 Cardbus adapter is firmly inserted
into the Cardbus slot of your laptop computer.
4. I forgot my Encryption key.
„
Reset the Access Point to its factory default settings and restore the
DWL-G650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter to the factory default settings.
(The default settings are listed in the Using the Configuration Utility
section in this manual.)
5. The computer does not recognize the DWL-G650 Wireless Adapter.
„
Make sure that the DWL-G650 Wireless Adapter is properly seated
in the computer’s Cardbus slot.
„
If Windows does not detect the hardware upon insertion of the
adapter, make sure to completely remove drivers that were
previously loaded. To remove the drivers, do the following:
36
Troubleshooting
A. Under Tools> select Folder Options…> select View
> under Hidden files and folders > select Show
hidden files and folders
B. Uncheck Hide extension for known file types > click
on Apply
C. Search for previously loaded driver files. Remove these
files from the INF and SYSTEM32 (DRIVERS) folders
in the Windows directory. Note: Windows XP and
Windows 2000 will rename .inf files that have not
received WHQL certification into oem.inf files (e.g.,
oem1.inf.)
6. The computer with the DWL-G650 installed is unable to connect to
the wireless network and/or the Internet.
„
Check that the LED indicators for the broadband modem are
indicating normal activity. If not, there may be a problem with the
broadband connection.
„
Check that the LED indicators on the wireless router are functioning
properly. If not, check that the AC power and Ethernet cables are
firmly connected.
„
Check that the IP Address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings
are correctly entered for the network
„
In Infrastructure mode, make sure the same Service Set
Identifier (SSID) is specified on the settings for the wireless clients
and access points. The SSID factory default setting for the D-Link
Air, AirPlus and AirPro products is default. (Double-click on the
WLAN icon in the taskbar. The Link Info screen will display the
SSID setting.)
„
In Ad-Hoc mode, both wireless clients will need to have the same
SSID. Please note that it might be necessary to set up one client to
establish a BSS (Basic Service Set) and wait briefly before setting
up other clients. This prevents several clients from trying to establish
a BSS at the same time, which can result in multiple singular BSSs
being established, rather than a single BSS with multiple clients
associated to it.
37
Troubleshooting
„
Check that the Network Connection for the wireless client is
configured properly. Select AP (Infrastructure) when connecting
to an access point and select Ad-Hoc mode when connecting
without an access point. Double-click on the WLAN icon in the
taskbar > click on Configuration to change the settings for the
wireless adapter.
„
If Security is enabled, make sure that the correct encryption keys
are entered on both the DWL-G650 and the access point. Doubleclick on the WLAN icon in the taskbar > click Encryption. Check to
see that the key selected is set to the same key as other devices on
the network.
7. How can I troubleshoot distance issues using the DWL-G650.
„
Move the DWL-G650 and Access Point or Wireless router into
the same room and then test the wireless connection.
„
Change the channel of the Access Point.
„
Move devices within the line of sight

new or have an identical make, model or part. D-Link may in its sole discretion replace the defective
Hardware (or any part thereof) with any reconditioned product that D-Link reasonably determines is
substantially equivalent (or superior) in all material respects to the defective Hardware. Repaired or
replacement Hardware will be warranted for the remainder of the original Warranty Period from the date
of original retail purchase. If a material defect is incapable of correction, or if D-Link determines in its sole
discretion that it is not practical to repair or replace the defective Hardware, the price paid by the original

Warranty Period, the magnetic media on which D-Link delivers the Software will be free of physical
defects. D-Link’s sole obligation shall be to replace the non-conforming Software (or defective media)
with software that substantially conforms to D-Link’s functional specifications for the Software or to
refund at D-Link’s sole discretion. Except as otherwise agreed by D-Link in writing, the replacement
Software is provided only to the original licensee, and is subject to the terms and conditions of the
license granted by D-Link for the Software. Software will be warranted for the remainder of the original
Warranty Period from the date or original retail purchase. If a material non-conformance is incapable of

refunded by D-Link; provided that the non-conforming Software (and all copies thereof) is first returned
to D-Link. The license granted respecting any Software for which a refund is given automatically
terminates.
Non-Applicability of Warranty: The Limited Warranty provided hereunder for hardware and software
of D-Link’s products will not be applied to and does not cover any refurbished product and any product
purchased through the inventory clearance or liquidation sale or other sales in which D-Link, the sellers,
or the liquidators expressly disclaim their warranty obligation pertaining to the product and in that case,
the product is being sold “As-Is” without any warranty whatsoever including, without limitation, the
Limited Warranty as described herein, notwithstanding anything stated herein to the contrary.

the product (such as a copy of the dated purchase invoice for the product) before the

After an RMA number is issued, the defective product must be packaged securely in the
original or other suitable shipping package to ensure that it will not be damaged in transit, and
the RMA number must be prominently marked on the outside of the package. Do not include any
