4IntroductionThe D-Link AirPlusXtremeG  DWL-G650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter is an enhanced802.11g high-performance, wireless adapter that supports high-speed wireless networkingat home, at work or in public places.Unlike most network cards, the DWL-G650 provides speeds of up to 54 Mbps (comparedto the standard 11 Mbps) when used with other D-Link AirXtremeG products. The 802.11gstandard is backwards compatible with 802.11b products.  This means that you do notneed to change your entire network to maintain connectivity.  You may sacrifice some of802.11g’s speed when you mix 802.11b and 802.11g devices, but you will not lose theability to communicate when you incorporate the 802.11g standard into your 802.11bnetwork.  You may choose to slowly change your network by replacing the 802.11bdevices with 802.11g devices gradually.In addition to offering faster data transfer speeds when used with other 802.11g products,the DWL-G650 has the newest, strongest, most advanced security features availabletoday.  When used with other 802.11g WPA  (WiFi Protected Access) and 802.1xcompatible products in a network with a radius server, the security features include:WPA: A new security feature, Wi-Fi Protected Access authorizes and identifies usersbased on a secret key that changes automatically at a regular interval. (Bycontrast, the older WEP encryption required the keys to be changed manually.)802.1x: Authentication is a first line of defense against intrusion. In theAuthentication process the server verifies the identity of the client attemptingto connect to the network. Unfamiliar clients would be denied access.TKIP: Temporal Key Integrity Protocol changes the temporal key every 10,000packets ( a packet is a kind of message transmitted over a network.)  Thisinsures much greater security than the standard WEP security.AES: Advanced Encryption Standard offers much larger key sizes.  At 128, 192,or  256 bits, the AES keys are much stronger than the old WEP standard of56 bits. It could take 149 trillion years to crack the code of an AES key, asopposed to 1 second to crack an old WEP key.For  home users that will not incorporate a radius server in their network, the security forthe DWL-G650, used in conjunction with other 802.11g products, will be much strongerthan ever before. Utilizing the Pre Shared Key mode the DWL-G650 will obtain a newsecurity key every time it connects to the 802.11g network.  You only need to input yourencryption information once in the configuration menu.  No longer will you have to manuallyinput a new WEP key frequently to ensure security, with the DWL-G650, you willautomatically receive a new key every time you connect, vastly increasing the safety ofyour communications.TM
5The DWL-G650 is compatible with existing 802.11b devices such as the D-Link Air,AirPlus and AirPro family of products including the DWL-520, DWL-520+ and theDWL-AB520 Wireless PCI Adapter, the DI-714 Wireless Router/Access Point and theDWL-120 Wireless USB Adapter. (When used with 802.11b devices, the DWL-G650will reach speeds at up to 11Mbps.)It is an ideal way to connect one laptop computer to a Wireless Local Area Network(WLAN.)  After completing the steps outlined in the Quick Installation Guide(included in the package) you will have the ability to share information and resources,such as files and printers, and take full advantage of a “connected” environment forwork or play!The DWL-G650 includes software drivers for the most popular Microsoft Windowsoperating systems (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows 98) and canbe integrated into a larger network, running, in either Ad Hoc mode (without anAccess Point) or Infrastructure mode (with an Access Point.)  Please take a look atour Getting Started section in this manual to see examples of typical network setupsusing the DWL-G650 in both Infrastructure and Ad-Hoc modes.This manual provides a quick introduction to wireless technology and its applicationas it relates to networking. 9Standards-Based TechnologyThe  DWL-G650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter utilizes the new 802.11g standard.The IEEE 802.11g standard is an extension of the 802.11b standard.  It increasesthe data rate up to 54 Mbps within the 2.4GHz band, utilizing OFDM technology. This means that in most environments, within the specified range of this device,you will be able to transfer large files quickly or even watch a movie in MPEGformat over your network without noticeable delays. This technology works bytransmitting high-speed digital data over a radio wave utilizing OFDM (OrthogonalFrequency Division Multiplexing) technology. OFDM works by splitting the radiosignal into multiple smaller sub-signals that are then transmitted simultaneouslyat different frequencies to the receiver.  OFDM reduces the amount of crosstalk(interference) in signal transmissions. The D-Link DWL-G650 will automaticallysense the best possible connection speed to ensure the greatest speed andrange possible.802.11g offers the most advanced network security features available today,including: WPA, 802.1x, TKIP, AES and Pre-Shared Key mode.  These securityfeatures are explained in more detail in the Introduction and the Features sectionof this manual.The DWL-G650 is backwards compatible with 802.11b devices.  This meansthat if you have an existing 802.11b network, the devices in that network will becompatible with 802.11g devices at speeds up to 11Mbps in the 2.4GHz range.Also based on the IEEE 802.11b standard, the DWL-G650 is interoperable withexisting compatible 2.4GHz wireless technology with data transfer speeds ofup to 11Mbps.Wireless Basics (continued)
10Wireless Basics (continued)Installation ConsiderationsThe D-Link AirExtreme DWL-G650 lets you access your network, using awireless connection, from virtually anywhere. Keep in mind, however, that thenumber, thickness and location of walls, ceilings, or other objects that thewireless signals must pass through, may limit the range. Typical ranges varydepending on the types of materials and background RF (radio frequency)noise in your home or business. The key to maximizing wireless range is tofollow these basic guidelines:1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the DWL-G650 and other network devices  to a minimum - each wall or ceiling can reduce your D-Link AirExtreme Wireless product’s range from 3-90 feet (1-30 meters.) Position your devices so that the number of walls or ceilings is minimized.2. Be aware of the direct line between network devices. A wall that is    1.5 feet thick (.5 meters), at a 45-degree angle appears to be almost 3    feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2-degree angle it looks over 42 feet (14 meters)    thick!  Try to make sure that devices are positioned so that the signal will    travel straight through a wall or ceiling for better reception.3. Building Materials make a difference - a solid metal door or aluminum    studs may have a negative effect on range. Try to position wireless    devices and computers with wireless adapters so that the signal passes    through drywall or open doorways and not other materials.4. Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from electrical    devices or appliances that generate RF noise.
11Getting StartedInfrastructure – using an Access Point, such as theDWL-900AP.Ad-Hoc – directly connecting to another computer, for peer-to-peer communication, using wireless network adapters oneach computer, such as two or more DWL-G650 wirelessnetwork Cardbus adapters.On the following pages we will show you an example of an InfrastructureNetwork and an Ad-Hoc Network.An Infrastructure network contains an Access Point or Router. To utilize thefull features of the DWL-G650 you will need to include a radius server in yournetwork. The Infrastructure Network example shown on the following pagecontains the following D-Link network devices (your existing network may becomprised of other devices):A wireless Access Point - D-Link Air  900APA laptop computer with a wireless adapter -D-Link AirPro DWL-G650A desktop computer with a wireless adapter -D-Link Air DWL-520(802.11b devices have speeds up to 11Mbps)A Cable modem - D-Link DCM-200There are basically two modes of networking:

13Getting StartedSetting up a Wireless Ad Hoc NetworkInstall the D-Link DWL-G520 Wireless Network adapter into onelaptop computer. See the Quick Installation Guide included with theproduct for installation instructions.Install another DWL-G650 into a laptop computer.  See the QuickInstallation Guide included with the product.Set the wireless configuration for the adapters to Ad-Hoc mode, setthe adapters to the same channel, and assign an IP Address toeach computer on the Ad-Hoc network.  (See Box below)When assigning IP Addresses to the computers on the network, pleaseremember that the IP Address for each computer must be in the sameIP Address range as all the computers in the network, and the subnetmask must be exactly the same for all the computers in the network.For example:  If the first computer is assigned an IP Address of 192.168.0.2with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0, then the second computer can beassigned an IP Address of 192.168.0.3 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0,etc.IMPORTANT: If computers or other devices are assigned the same IPAddress, one or more of the devices may not be visible on the network.IP Address
14Using the Configuration UtilityBefore you use the configuration utility for the DWL-G650, you must install thedrivers and the configuration utility from the CD-ROM that came with the DWL-G650.  (Please see the Quick Installation Guide that came with the product.)After you have completed this installation and restarted your computer, you canaccess the Configuration Utility at any time by clicking on the icon in your taskbarat the bottom right corner, on the desktop.If you wish to change the default settings or optimize the performance of theDWL-G650, D-Link has included a configuration utility for this purpose.  How-ever, in Windows XP, you will instead use zero configuration utility.After double-clicking on the icon in the taskbar (shown at right),the Link Info window shown on the next page will appear:
15Status: Displays the MAC Address of the Access Point that is associatedwith the DWL-G650.SSID: The Service Set Identifier is the name assigned to the wirelessnetwork. The factory SSID setting is set to default.TxRate: The factory setting is set to 11 Mbps; however, TxRate settings areautomatically determined by the DWL-G650 depending on the distance fromthe access point.Channel: Displays the channel information. By default, the channel is set to6 and selection is automatically determined by the DWL-G650.Link Quality / Signal Strength: Displays the Link Quality for the DWL-G650wireless connection to the access point. The Signal Strength represents thewireless signal between the access point and the DWL-G650. Thepercentage coincides with the graphical bar.Data Rate: Displays the statistics of data transmitted and received.Configuration UtilityLink Info
16To communicate on the network all devices must have thesame settings for the following properties:SSID - (Service Set Identifier) is a name that identifies a wireless network.  AccessPoints and wireless clients attempting to connect to a specific WLAN (Wireless LocalArea Network) must use the same SSID.  The default setting is default.Wireless Mode - Click on the pull-down menu; select from the following options:Infrastructure - connecting the WLAN using an Access Point.  (The defaultsetting.)Ad-Hoc – wireless mode used when connecting directly to a computer equippedwith a wireless adapter in a peer-to-peer environment.Channel – The default channel setting is channel 6.  However, the DWL-G650 willautomatically select the channel to match the channel setting for the selected AccessPoint. In Ad Hoc mode, the channel must be manually set to the same channel foreach wireless adapter.TX Rate - Select the transmission rate on the network. 54Mbps is the defaultsetting.Preamble - Select Long or Short Preamble. The Preamble defines the length of theCRC block (Cyclic Redundancy Check is a common technique for detecting datatransmission errors) for communication between the Access Point and the roamingwireless Network adapters.  Long Preamble is the default setting. The computer does not recognize the DWL-G650  Wireless Adapter.

Uncheck Hide extension for known file types > clickon  ApplyC. Search for previously loaded driver files. Remove thesefiles from the INF and SYSTEM32 (DRIVERS) foldersin the Windows directory.  Note:  Windows XP andWindows 2000 will rename .inf files that have notreceived WHQL certification into oem.inf files (e.g.,oem1.inf.)Check that the LED indicators for the broadband modem areindicating normal activity.  If not, there may be a problem with thebroadband connection.Check that the LED indicators on the wireless router are functioningproperly.  If not, check that the AC power and Ethernet cables arefirmly connected.Check that the IP Address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settingsare correctly entered for the networkIn  Infrastructure mode, make sure the same Service SetIdentifier (SSID) is specified on the settings for the wireless clientsand access points.  The SSID factory default setting for the D-LinkAir, AirPlus and AirPro products is default.  (Double-click on theWLAN icon in the taskbar. The Link Info screen will display theSSID setting.)In Ad-Hoc mode, both wireless clients will need to have the sameSSID.  Please note that it might be necessary to set up one client toestablish a BSS (Basic Service Set) and wait briefly before settingup other clients. This prevents several clients from trying to establisha BSS at the same time, which can result in multiple singular BSSsbeing established, rather than a single BSS with multiple clientsassociated to it.6.  The computer with the DWL-G650 installed is unable to connect to     the wireless network and/or the Internet.
