Donottightenthenutwhilethetooliscominguptopressure;waituntilpressureisachieved
beforeattemptingtotightenthenutwiththespannerring.Ifthetoolisnotproperlyinstalled,

Thisequipmentproducesveryhighhydraulicpressuresandveryhighforces.Operatorsmust
exercisecautionandweartheappropriatepersonalprotectiveequipmentwhenhandlingand
operatingthehydraulictooling.
High‐pressureoilfromthehydraulicpumppressurizesthetensionerwhichgeneratesavery
largeforcethatactuallystretchesthestud.Asthestudisstretchedthenutliftsofftheflange.
Thenutisthenturnedbyhandusingthesuppliedspannerring.Oncethenutistightagainstthe
flange,thepressureinthetensionerisreleased.Thehardwareisnowclampingtheflange
together.
4.1MachinePreparation
Theflangetobetensionedmustbefullyclosedpriortopositioningthestudsintheflanges.
Theremustbeprovisionsforturningtheshaftsoftheturbine,coupling,gearbox,and
generator.Also,itwillbeadvantageoustoremoveasmanyobstructionsaspossiblefromthe
flangearea,suchasspeedprobesandconduit.

Thestudsaresuppliedincomponentbalancedsets.Astudcanbeexchangedwithanotherinits
setwithoutaffectedtheoverallbalanceoftheequipment.Donotexchangeastudfromoneset
withanotherstudfromadifferentset.WhenshippedfromRiverhawk,thestudsarenot
assignedtoanyspecificholeintheloadcouplingflange;thisisoptionalandcanbedoneatthe
installationsite.ThesetsizeisdeterminedbytherelevantGEorderdrawing(seesection2.0).
Thenutsaresuppliedincomponentbalancedsets.Anutcanbeexchangedwithanotherinits
setwithoutaffectingtheoverallbalanceoftheequipment.Donotexchangeanutfromoneset
withanothernutfromadifferentset.WhenshippedfromRiverhawk,thenutsarenotassigned
toanyspecificholeintheloadcouplingflange;thisisoptionalandcanbedoneatthe
installationsite.ThesetsizeisdeterminedbytherelevantGEorderdrawing(seesection2.0).
Aweightbalancecertificationissuppliedwitheachorder.Storethiscertificationinan
appropriatelocationasitwillbeneededforthepurchaseofreplacementequipment.
4.3Tensioner–CareandHandling
Whennotinuse,thetensionershallbemaintainedinacleanenvironmentandallcapsand
plugsforhydraulicopeningsandfittingsmustbeinplace.

Wheninuse,thetensionershallbeprotectedfromsandandgrit.

Fornewinstallations,thenutsshouldcomesealedfromthefactoryandwillneednocleaning.
Beforethreadingthenutontothestud,thesetscrewsshouldbelooseandfreetoturn.
5.1.2NutCleaning‐OldInstallations
Previouslyinstallednutsrequirecleaningasfollows:Wirebrushusingapetroleum‐based
solventtoremoveanyforeignmaterialontheexternalsurfacesandthreads.
Beforethreadingthenutontothestud,thesetscrewsshouldbelooseandfreetoturn.
5.1.3NutCleaning‐VeryOldInstallations
Ifpreviousinstallationsemployedathread‐lockingcompound,whichwillbevisibleasagrayish‐
greenresidue,removeasmuchofthiscompoundaspossible.Finishthecleaningprocessby
rinsinginavolatilesolventsuchasacetoneandallowtodry.
RiverhawkCompanystronglyrecommendsreplacingthisstyleofnutwiththecurrentnutwith
