1 Thank you for choosing E220 HSDPA USB Modem (hereinafter referred to as the E220) from Huawei. The E220 provides the following functions: y Internet accessing y Short messaging service (SMS) y Contacts Note: This manual briefly describes the basic functions of the E220. For further functions as well as warnings and precautions, refer to User Manual.  Getting Started 1.  Getting to Know the E220 The following figure shows the E220 profile. USB interfaceUSIM/SIM card slot Indicator Note: The figure is for your reference only. 2. Indicator This indicator indicates the status of E220. y Off: The E220 is powered off. y Green, Blinking twice every 2.7 seconds: The E220 is searching for a network or no network is available. y Green, Blinking twice every 2.9 seconds: The GSM network is normal. y Blue, Blinking once every 2.9 seconds: The WCDMA network is normal. y Green: GPRS data service is established. y Cyan: HSDPA data service is established. y Blue: WCDMA data service is established. 3. Computer Configuration Requirements To use the E220, configure a computer according to the following items: y Central processing unit (CPU): Pentium 4, 1 GHz or above y Memory: 128 MB RAM or above y Hard disk: 50 MB or above y Operating system (OS): Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows Vista y Universal serial bus (USB) modem interface: USB 2.0 full speed y Display resolution: 800 % 600 or above (1024 % 768 is recommended) 2 Note: y Improper configuration may degrade the computer performance.   y For Windows XP, it is recommended to install patches such as Service Pack 2 or above. y For Windows 2000, it is recommended to install patches such as Service Pack 4 or above.  Preparing E220 1)  Remove the UMTS subscriber identity module/subscriber identity module (USIM/SIM) card slot from the E220. Then insert the USIM/SIM card into the card slot, as shown in the following figure. Make sure that the USIM/SIM card is fully in place.    2)  Insert the card slot into the E220, as shown in the following figure.  Installation Instructions The installation procedures of the E220 Manager vary with operating systems (OSs). Refer to the actual installation instructions during the installation process. 1.  Connecting the E220 with a Computer Note: First, power on a computer. Then connect the E220 with the computer. Otherwise, the normal installation of the E220 can be affected. 3 1)  Plug the mini-universal series bus (USB) connector into the E220.  2)  Plug the connectors of the main USB data cable and the auxiliary USB data cable into the USB interfaces of the computer.      3)  The OS automatically detects and recognizes the new hardware and displays    on the status area of the desktop, indicating that the E220 is connected to the computer successfully.  2.  Installing the E220 Manager 1)  Connect the E220 to a computer. 2)  The installation wizard automatically starts. If the installation wizard does not respond, double-click the AutoRun.exe file in the driver path to manually install the E220 Manager. 3)  Follow the instructions to install the E220 Manager. Note: Do not disconnect the E220 during the installation process.  4)  If the installation succeeds, the shortcut icon of the Manager appears on the desktop.   4 3.  Removing the E220 To remove the E220, use the hardware deleting function of Windows. 1)  Double-click    on the status area of the desktop; the "Safely Remove Hardware" prompt is displayed. 2)  Select "Huawei Mass Storage USB Device" to stop. 3)  At the prompt, remove the E220.
