Hard disk drives are described andadvertised by manufacturers in terms of decimal(base 10) capacity. Microsoft Windows and otherprograms, such as FDISK, use the binary (base 2)numbering system. In decimal notation, one megabyte (MB) is equalto 1,000,000 bytes, and one gigabyte (GB) isequal to 1,000,000,000 bytes. In the binarynumbering system, one megabyte is equal to1,048,576 bytes, and one gigabyte is equal to1,073,741,824 bytes. Because of the differentmeasuring systems, you may see a differencebetween the size reported by Microsoft Windowsand the size advertised. The storage capacity ofthe hard disk drive is as advertised.Microsoft Windows reports smaller capacity in theWindows Explorer tool and in the computerwindow because it shows information about onepartition on the hard disk drive at a time. One ofthe partitions contains the System Recoveryinformation.

As needed Backing up your data Use CD or DVD recording software that is installed on your computer to create (or “burn”)backup discs of important information, including personal files, e-mail messages, and Website bookmarks. You can also move data to an external hard disk drive.Keeping the computer free of dust, dirt, and heatKeeping your computer system free of dust, dirt, and heat will prolong its life. Dust, pet hair, and other particles canbuild up, creating a blanket effect; as a result, components can overheat, or, in the case of the keyboard and mouse, not work smoothly and effectively. Check your system once a month for visible signs of dust and debris, and clean itabout once every three months. Visit www.hp.com/support for additional cleaning instructions.Cleaning the computer vents Air vents keep the computer and monitor cool. Keep these vents clean by using a small,battery-powered vacuum cleaner. (A battery-powered vacuum cleaner eliminates therisk of electric shock.)1. Vacuum the vents on the computer case and the monitor case.2. Remove any debris that has accumulated in and around the computer connectors(for example, the Ethernet and USB connectors).Cleaning the computer andmonitorFollow these steps to clean the computer and monitor:1. Unplug the power to the computer and the monitor.2. To clean the monitor screen, use a clean, dry cloth. Do not use water on themonitor screen. For more thorough cleaning, use a clean cloth and antistaticscreen cleaner.3. Use a clean, dry cloth to dust the computer case and the monitor case.NOTE:To remove sticker residue or a spill on the computer or monitor case, use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and a lint-free cloth.Cleaning the keyboard andmouseWhen cleaning the keyboard keys, use a low setting on a battery-powered vacuumcleaner, to avoid removing key caps and springs.1. Vacuum between the keys of the keyboard and along the grooves.2. Use a clean, dry cloth and isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to clean buildup on thekeyboard keys and along its edges.3. Wipe the body of the mouse and the mouse cord by using cleaning wipes. If you have a roller-ball mouse, clean the ball and rollers inside:1. Turn the mouse upside down, and rotate the ball-cover ring counterclockwise toremove the ring and release the roller ball.2. Rinse the roller ball with soap and warm water.3. Clean the rollers inside the mouse with a cotton swab dampened with isopropyl(rubbing) alcohol.4. After the roller ball and rollers are completely dry, replace the ball and ball-coverring.ENWW Maintenance 15
System RecoverySystem Recovery completely erases and reformats the hard disk drive, deleting all data files you have created, andthen reinstalls the operating system, programs, and drivers. Choosing recovery discs●To create recovery discs, your computer must have a DVD writer, and you must use only high-quality blank DVD+R or DVD-R discs.NOTE:You cannot use CDs or DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW DL, DVD-RW DL, DVD+R DL, or DVD-R DLdiscs to create recovery discs.●Use high-quality discs to create your set of recovery discs. It is normal for discs to be rejected if they are notdefect-free. You will be prompted to insert a new blank disc to try again.●The number of discs in the recovery-disc set depends on your computer model (typically 1–3 DVD discs). TheRecovery Disc Creator program tells you the specific number of blank discs needed to make the set.NOTE: The process of creating recovery discs takes some time to verify that the information written on thedisc is correct. You can quit the process at any time. The next time you run the program, it resumes where it leftoff.Creating recovery discsTo create recovery discs:1. Close all open programs.2. Click the Start button, click All Programs, click Recovery Manager, and then click Recovery DiscCreation. If prompted, click Yes to allow the program to continue.3. Follow the onscreen instructions. ENERGY STAR Qualification (select models only)NOTE: This section applies only to products bearing the Energy Star logo.HP computers marked with the ENERGY STAR logo follow the applicable U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) ENERGY STAR specifications for computers. The EPA ENERGY STAR logo does notimply endorsement by the EPA. As an ENERGY STAR Partner, Hewlett-Packard Company hasdetermined the products marked with the ENERGY STAR logo are ENERGY STAR-qualified per theapplicable ENERGY STAR guidelines for energy efficiency. The following logo appears on all ENERGYSTAR-qualified computers. The ENERGY STAR Computers Program was created by the EPA to promote energy efficiency andreduce air pollution through more energy-efficient equipment in homes, offices, and factories. One wayproducts achieve this energy efficiency is by reducing power consumption when not being used throughthe Microsoft Windows Power Management feature. The Power Management feature enables the computer to enter a low-power (or “sleep”) mode after aperiod of inactivity. When used with an external monitor that is ENERGY STAR-qualified, this featurealso supports the similar power management features of the external monitor. To take advantage of this energy savings, the Power Management feature has been preset to powerdown the computer and monitor after the following specified periods of inactivity: Operating System Computer MonitorBusiness Desktops XP 15 minutes 15 minutesVista 15 minutes 15 minutesWindows 7 30 minutes 10 minutesConsumer Desktops 15 minutes 10 minutesThin Clients Not applicable 15 minutesWorkstations 30 minutes 15 minutesBoth the computer and monitor can be woken from sleep mode through user interaction with any of thecomputer input devices (mouse, keyboard, and so on). When configured with Wake On LAN (WOL)enabled, the computer can also be woken by a network signal.See the EPA ENERGY STAR Power Management Web site for more information about the energy andfinancial savings potential of the Power Management Feature: http://www.energystar.gov/powermanagement.See the EPA ENERGY STAR Web site for more information about the ENERGY STAR program andits environmental benefits: http://www.energystar.gov.CAUTION: Using the Energy Save Monitor feature with monitors that are not ENERGY STAR-qualifiedcan cause video distortion when an Energy Save timeout occurs.20 Chapter 2 Regulatory Agency Notices ENWW
