Timely News for Members of the Wunita Gokhos Lodge, Order of the Arrow
From Our
Lodge Chief
Brothers,
Fellow Arrowmen,
Congratulations to all
those who won awards
at the banquet, thank
you for your service
and devotion to the
Lodge. As for myself, it
is truly an honor to be
selected as one of the
2018 Vigil Class, and for
this I am grateful to all
those who have helped
me get to where I am
now. Likewise, I am sure
the others in this year’s
Vigil Class are feeling
emotions of excitement
and gratitude.
Haven’t had a chance
to talk to those from
the banquet? Come to
Fellowship Weekend
to congratulate them
yourself, also come for
an incredibly fun time!
We have a variety of
events for those that
want to use their brains
or just sit back and relax.
Just beyond Fellowship
Weekend, is Conclave.
Make sure to sign up,
I hear we have some
truly awesome activities
planned!

Mitchell Daneker

Lodge Banquet –
an All-around Hit!
On Saturday, February
17, members of our
Lodge and their families
and friends gathered at
Melhorn Manor in Mt.
Joy for our Annual Lodge
Family Banquet.
In addition to fun and
fellowship, members got
to see and catch up with
fellow members.
Our silent auction
netted over $600 and like
last year, Banquet Bingo
was incredibly popular!
Harvey’s BBQ prepared
awesome, home-style
food. None of our
members or their guests
left hungry.
As always, the highlight
of the evening was the
awards and recognitions
portion of the evening’s
program. Congratulations
to all those who were
recognized! See page 6 of
this newsletter for a recap
of our award recipients
and page 7 for our 2018
Vigil Class.
Thanks to Tony Astarita
our Banquet Chairman
and the many other
members who helped
make this Banquet one of
the best yet!

Lodge Adviser’s Message
Each year, I am more amazed at the
great things our Arrowmen do each year
- congratulations and thank you to those Arrowmen who stepped
up and helped lead the Lodge last year. Congratulations to all of
our annual award winners from the Family Banquet, including the
Arrowmen of the Year, Ocer Award, Vigil Honor, and Founder’s
Award recipients! The Lodge was honored to bestow the James
E. West Award to Jim Rank for outstanding service to Wunita
Gokhos Lodge! 2017 was a great year for the Lodge, but 2018
is quickly shaping up to be even better as we host Conclave and
head to NOAC.
Normally I save this bottom half of the message for something
awesome that I know you all look forward to reading. This
time around is no dierent, but it is so simple. COME TO
CONCLAVE!!!! We’re going to put on a great event for the
Section, but we need your help! We have a ton in store for the
members of the other lodges – including competitions, great
food, terrific training, a color run, and a few more awesome
surprises. Won’t you feel silly if you miss out on what will be the
best Conclave you’ve ever seen!? (Yes, yes you will.) Register
today!!
In service,
Eric Shea

Our three Chapter had some great meeting
the past eight months. Chapters do not meet
the months of May, June, July and August.
Beginning in September, Chapter Meetings
are held on the same night and in the same
building as your District Roundtable Meetings.
All Arrowmen are encouraged to attend
– it’s especially important for your Troop’s
OA Representative to make it to all Chapter
Meetings. Chapter programs vary and meetings
are fun and provide valuable tools and info that
you can take back to your unit.
Horseshoe Trail District Chapter
The Horseshoe Trail District Chapter meets
the first Thursday of each month at 7:15 PM at
the Cedar Crest Middle School in Lebanon. This
is the same evening as the District Roundtable.
So if you want to get more involved with the
OA, come on out to our chapter meetings an
take part in some good fellowship and food.
Please bring along a donation of $3 to oset the
cost of refreshments for the chapter meeting.
If you would like to receive additional Chapter
information contact Chapter Chief Ryan Esterby
at resterby@windstream.net
Conestoga River District Chapter
The Conestoga River District Chapter
meetings are held at the Pequea Elementary
School, 802 Millwood Road, Willow Street at
7:00 PM on the first Thursday of the month in
conjunction with the Conestoga River District
Roundtable meeting. The chapter meetings
are open to all youth and adult members of
the OA. We have an OA/ camping promotion
theme to every meeting. Scouter attending
the Roundtable are encouraged to bring youth
Arrowmen to the chapter meetings. Pizza
and drinks are provided. A $2-3 donation is
encouraged to oset the price of the pizza. For
more information regarding chapter meetings
contact Chapter Chief Joel Knepper.
Harvest District Chapter
The Harvest District Chapter Meetings
correspond with the Harvest District Roundtable
meetings, and are held the second Tuesday
of each month at Lancaster Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints, Stake Center located
at 1136 Sunwood Lane, Lancaster, at 7:15 PM.
Scout Leaders attending the Roundtable are
encouraged to bring Scouts in your Troop for
the Chapter Meetings. Pizza and drinks will be

For information or to be included on our
Chapter mailing list, please contact any of the
Chapter ocers listed on the facing page.

Conclave 2018 – UPDATE
By now, you know that in 2018,
our Lodge will host our Section
Conclave. The date for Conclave is
June 1st through the 3rd at Camp
Bashore.
Our Youth Conclave Committee
Chairmen have been recruited and our
adult Committee Advisers are in place.
Planning is now in full swing! June 1st
will be here before you know it. There is
a lot to do and we welcome ALL Lodge
members to come out and help us put on
a heck of a Conclave for our Section.
Thanks to everyone who has already
stepped up and volunteered. We have
about 60 Lodge members signed up. We
could use more...like 60 more to join us on
sta with one of the Conclave committees
listed below.
We are still recruiting sta to serve on all
of our committees:
• Customer Service
• First Aid, Kitchen
• Newsletter
• Physical Arrangements
• Program
• Shows
• Trading Post
If you have not yet volunteered and
you are interested in being part of our
Conclave sta, you can still volunteer
– just register for Conclave using the
Conclave registration form included in
this newsletter! It’s that simple!
Conclave Items Are Now Available
for Pre-Order!
Included in this issue of the Owl’s Nest is
the pre-order form for our 2018 Conclave.
Conclave items include:

Lodge Fellowship & Service Weekend
Friday, April 27 through Sunday, April 29
at Camp Mack
At the end of April, the Lodge will hold it’s
annual Fellowship and Service Weekend. This
is a FUN weekend. Yes, we do service at camp
but that’s only on Saturday morning. Saturday
afternoon is chock-full of games and fun
activities. Those who stay Saturday night are
treated to more fun, movies and popcorn and of
course, fellowship with other Arrowmen.
This is a great time to get outdoors after being
cooped-up all winter. By mid-April the weather
is warming and we’ll all be ready to start some
early spring camp cleanup.
This is also the weekend when our Vigil
candidates keep their Vigil (on Friday night). The
Vigil ceremony is held early Saturday morning.
Note that the Friday night Vigil activities and
Saturday morning Vigil ceremony are open to
current Vigil Honor members only.
We hope to get a good showing for this fun
weekend. A registration form for the weekend
is included in this newsletter. Deadline for
registration is April 13, 2018.
NOTE: A Conclave Sta and Committee
Meeting will be held on Sunday at about
9:00 AM. If you are serving on a Conclave
Committee, be sure to be there! All
interested Lodge members are invited.
Have you been an Ordeal Member
for longer that 10 months?
Then you can seal your membership
by becoming a Brotherhood
Member at the Spring Ordeal
Weekend!
Sealing your membership in the Order by
becoming a Brotherhood member is more
than getting anew sash. Brotherhood members
have a better understanding of the Order,
our Purpose and Mission. We are true servant
leaders and we understand how membership
in the Order compliments our membership in
our Troop. You set an example of what an OA
member is and does.
Earning your Brotherhood membership is not
dicult. During the Spring Weekend, you’ll be
asked to put aside a few hours on Saturday for
some instructions and group lessons when you’ll
learn more about the Order. Later, on Saturday
afternoon your review what you learned -- this
is NOT a test but a simple review. That evening,
you’ll participate in the Brotherhood Ceremony
when you will seal your membership in our
Order.
Information about registering for Brotherhood
is included on the registration form included in
this newsletter.
The May/June/July 2018 Owl’s Nest 5
BSA Medical
Forms Required
on ALL Lodge
and Section
Weekends!
This is a reminder
that ocial BSA Medical
Forms are required for
all OA weekends for all
participants.
Although activities
on OA weekends are
not comparable to
high adventure trips,
sometimes people get
sick or injured -- a nasty
cut finger, a fall causing
a swollen foot. We want
to take the necessary
precautions and be ready
for that quick trip to the
hospital for an x-ray or
a few stitches. Should
something happen, the
Lodge health ocer will
need your medical form
so your parents or
guardian can be
contacted and the health
care providers have
your current medical
information.
If you have a current
medical form, there is
no need to get another
physical, simply make a
copy of your form and
bring the COPY to the
weekend. You can get
the copy of your medical
form back at the end of
the weekend. Medical
forms not picked up at
the end of the weekend
will be shredded. Since
medical information can
change, the Lodge does
NOT keep medical forms
from event to event. We
want to ensure we have
current information.
Spring Ordeal & Service Weekend at Camp Bashore
Friday, May 18 through Sunday Morning, May 20
This Spring Ordeal Weekend is particularly important since this will be
the weekend when the Lodge does work in preparation for hosting our
Section Conclave at Camp Bashore.
We encourage all members to attend this weekend since there will be
some important work to complete for Conclave.
In addition to preparing for Conclave, we will be inducting new Ordeal
members into the lodge; and for those of you that have been an Ordeal
member for at least 10 months, we will be conducting Brotherhood
training and ceremonies. A registration form can be found on the
enclosed form sheet. A schedule of events is included below. Please plan
to attend and have your registration form into the scout oce no later
than May 4, 2018.

2018 Lodge Award Recipients
On Saturday, February 17 at Melhorn Manor
in Mt. Joy, our Lodge recognized our members
with several annual awards including the Lodge
Ocer’s Awards and Arrowman of The Year
Awards.
The Lodge also gave special recognition to
Jim Rank with the a James E. West Fellowship
Award. This award, named for Scouting’s first
Chief Scout Executive, is a way of recognizing
a Friend of Scouting in our Lodge and helps
promote future excellence in Scouting. This is a
National Recognition of an individual in whose
name a significant donation to the Pennsylvania
Dutch’s Council’s endowment fund has been
made. Jim definitely meets that criteria!
Below are photos of all our award recipients.

Welcome Our 2018 Vigil Class!
During our Spring Lodge Fellowship and
Service weekend, eight of our members will be
receiving their Vigil Honor.
The Vigil Honor is the highest honor that
the Order of the Arrow can bestow upon its
members for service to lodge, council, and
Scouting. Membership cannot be won by a
person’s conscious endeavors.
The Vigil Honor is a high mark of distinction
and recognition is reserved for those Arrowmen
who, by reason of exceptional service,
personal eort, and unselfish interest, have
made distinguished contributions beyond the
immediate responsibilities of their position of
oce to one or more of the following: their
Lodge, the Order of the Arrow, the Scouting
community and our Scout Camps.
Tenure in Scouting or the Order of the Arrow
is never considered as reason enough for a Vigil
Honor recommendation.
Our 2018 Vigil Class is pictured below.
Above is the 2018 Vigila Class from left to right: Greg
Embly, Joel Knepper, Ryan Esterby, Jack Pauli, Riley Miller
and Mitchell Daneker. Absent when photo was taken:
