PREPARATIONACCESSORIESYour VCP includes the following connec-tion accessories. Be sure to unpack allof them before you throw away thepacking material.300-to-75-ohm Adapter Ñ connects a300-ohm antenna wire to the VCPÕsANT.IN terminal.75-ohm Coaxial Cable Ñ connects theVCPÕs RF.OUT terminal to your TVÕs 75-ohm antenna terminal.VCP/TV DC Power Cord Ñ lets youpower the VCP and a portable TV (notsupplied) from your vehicleÕs cigarettelighter socket.AC Adapter Ñ lets you power the VCPfrom a standard AC outlet.CHOOSING A LOCATIONFor safe and effective operation of yourVCP, consider the following when youchoose an installation location.¥ Place the VCP away from directsunlight and heat sources, such asradiators and heat vents.¥ Do not place the VCP in a dusty orhumid area.¥ Do not block the VCPÕs ventilationholes. For example, do not push theback of the VCP against a paddedsurface.¥ Place the VCP on a flat surface, away from strong vibrations ormagnetic fields.¥ Do not put anything on top of theVCP.7
MAKING CONNECTIONSYou can connect your VCP to a TV mon-itor, a VCR (video cassette recorder), orboth. To help you make the rightconnections:¥ If connection a TV, use the connec-tions de-scribed in ÒConnecting aStandard TVÓ on Page 7.A Òstandard TVÓ can receive broad-cast TV signals from an antenna orcable system, and can be tuned todifferent channels to view the broad-casts. It does not have separateaudio and video input jacks.¥ If connection a monitor or TV/moni-tor, use the connections described in ÒConnect-ing a TV/MonitorÓ onPage 8. (An additional audio/videocable is required.)A ÒTV/monitorÓ is like a standard TV,but it also has separate audio andvideo input jacks. Using the sepa-rate audio and video input jacksresults in a better quality picture andsound.¥ If you want to connect a VCR to theVCP for copying tapes, use the con-nections described in ÒConnecting aVCRÓ on Page 9. (An additionalaudio/video cable is required.)Note to the CATV System Installer:This reminder is provided to call theCATV system installerÕs attention to arti-cle 820-40 of the NEC that providesguidelines for proper grounding and, inparticular, specifies that the cableground shall be connected to the ground-ing system of the building, as close tothe point of cable entry as practical.8
Connecting a Standard TVFollow these steps to connect the VCP to a standard TV that has a 75-ohm cable jack(but does not have separate audio and video input jacks).1. Make sure the TV is off, then disconnect the antenna or cable wire from your TVÕsVHF antenna terminal and connect it to the VCPÕs ANT.IN terminal.Notes:¥ If your antenna has a 300-ohm wire, connect the wire to the 300-ohm screwterminals on the supplied 300-to-75-ohm adapter. Then connect the adapterÕs75-ohm connector to the VCPÕs ANT.IN terminal.¥ If you have a VHF/UHF splitter connected to your TV, disconnect the antennawire from the splitterÕs input terminal and leave the splitter connected to the TV.¥ If you have a separate UHF antenna, leave the UHF antenna wire connected tothe TV.2. Using the supplied 75-ohm coaxial cable, connect the VCPÕs RF.OUT terminal tothe TVÕs VHF antenna terminal (or the splitterÕs input terminal).93DC IN 12V4CHANNELRF.OUTANT.INVIDEOOUTAUDIOOUT300-ohm 75-ohmUHF VHF75-Ohm coaxial cableMODEL 4075-Ohm Coaxial CableAdapter(300-to-75-Ohm)VHF 300-OhmTwin LeadVHF/UHF AntennaORTV
Connecting a TV MonitorTo connect your VCP to a TV monitorÕs separate audio and video input jacks, connectthe VCPÕs AUDIO and VIDEO OUT jacks to the TV monitorÕs audio and video inputjacks using video-quality shielded cable (not supplied).Caution: You must use video-quality cable for this type of connection. SETTING THE CHANNELSWITCHCHANNEL, on the back of the VCP, de-termines on which channel (3 or 4) astandard TV receives the VCPÕs signal.Set CHANNEL to 3for channel 3, or 4forchannel 4.Notes:¥ If possible, set CHANNEL to a chan-nel on which you do not receive reg-ular television broadcasts.¥ The CHANNEL setting has no effecton the audio and video outputs, nordoes it affect a standard TVÕs opera-tion when the VCP is not playing atape.CONNECTING POWERUsing the supplied adapters, you canpower your VCP from either a standardAC outlet or your vehicleÕs cigarette-lighter socket.Cautions:¥ If you use the VCP in areas of highhumidity or move it from a cold areato a warm one, allow it to warm upfor about 2 hours before you plug itin and operate it. This allows anydamaging moisture to completelyevaporate.¥ If moisture has formed inside theVCP, it might not operate after youconnect power (see ÒDew ProtectionSystemÓ on Page 12).Using AC PowerThe supplied AC adapter lets you powerthe VCP from a standard AC outlet. Cautions:¥ The supplied AC adapter provides14 volts DC power and delivers 850milliamps and has a plug that prop-erly fits the VCPÕs DC IN 12V jack.Using an adapter that does not meetthese specifications could damagethe VCP, your TV monitor, or theadapter.¥ When you unplug the AC adapter, grasp the adapterÕs plug, not itscord.¥ Always plug the AC adapter into theVCP before you plug it into the ACoutlet. Always unplug the ACadapter from the outlet before youunplug it from the VCP.123DC IN 12V4CHANNELRF.OUTANT.INVIDEOOUTAUDIOOUTChannel Selector Switch
To use AC power, connect the AC adapt-erÕs barrel plug to the VCPÕs DC IN 12Vjack, then plug the AC adapterÕs powercord into a standard AC outlet.Using Vehicle Battery PowerThe supplied DC adapter lets you poweryour VCP and a portable TV (notsupplied) from your vehicleÕs cigarette-lighter socket.Cautions:¥ The TV you use must have a DC 12-volt jack (with the center tip set topositive) that accepts the adapterÕs5.5 mm outer diameter/2.1 mm innerdiameter plug.¥ Before plugging the power cordÕscigarette-lighter plug into your vehi-cleÕs cigarette-lighter socket, besure the knurled ring at the plugÕs tipis screwed firmly onto the plug.¥ Always plug the DC adapter into theVCP and TV before you plug it intothe cigarette-lighter socket. Alwaysunplug the DC adapter from thecigarette-lighter socket before youunplug it from the VCP and TV.¥ The VCP continues to draw a smallamount of current from the vehicleÕsbattery even after you turn it off, sobe sure to disconnect the DCadapter from the cigarette-lightersocket when you are not using theVCP and TV, to prevent your vehi-cleÕs battery from being drained. The DC power cord has two barrel plugson one end and a cigarette-lighter plugon the other end. To connect DC power, plug one of the adapterÕs barrel plugsinto the VCPÕs DC IN 12V jack, and plugthe other into the TVÕs DC 12-volt jack. Then connect the cigarette-lighter pluginto the vehicleÕs cigarette-lighter socket.Note: If the DC adapter does not providepower, check the fuse. CARE AND MAINTENANCEYour Optimus Model 40 AC-DC Video Cassette Player is an example of superiordesign and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for the VCPso you can enjoy it for years.Keep the VCP dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids mightcontain minerals that can corrode the electronic circuits.Use and store the VCP only in normal temperature environments. Tem-perature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices damagethe remote controlÕs batteries, and distort or melt plastic parts.Keep the VCP away from dust and dirt, which can cause prematurewear of parts.Handle the VCP gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage circuitboards and cases and can cause the VCP to work improperly.Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type in the remote con-trol. Batteries can leak chemicals that damage your remote controlÕselectronic parts.Wipe the VCP with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new.Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents toclean it.Modifying of tampering with VCPÕs internal components can cause a malfunction andmight invalidate its warranty and void your FCC authorization to operate it. If yourVCP is not performing as it should, take it to your local RadioShack store forassistance.22
CLEANING THE VIDEOHEADSDirty video heads can cause the VCPÕspicture to be blurred during playback, even when the video signal is clear. Werecommend that you clean the headsonly when such problems occur. Forproper head cleaning, follow the instruc-tions in a head-cleaning kit, such as Ra-dio Shack Cat. No. 44-1203, or take theVCP to your local RadioShack store forregular servicing.VIDEO TAPE TIPSAlthough a video cassette tape is built fordurability, you should handle it with care.¥ Keep the video cassette in itsprotective box when you are notusing it.¥ Do not store video cassettes in high-temperature, high-humidity loca-tions. Store them in a cool, dry, dust-free environment.¥ Store your video cassettes on theirends, not on their sides. Thisprevents improper setting of thecassetteÕs spools.¥ A video cassetteÕs tape can becomewound too tightly around thecassetteÕs spools after numerousplayings. This can cause thecassette to improperly load andautomatically eject when you load it.On most video cassette, there is abrake-release plunger on thebottom-center of the cassette. Usethe tip of a pen or pencil to press theplunger. This loosens the tape.23Brake-Release Plunger
REPLACING THE FUSEIf the VCP does not operate when the DCadapter is connected, the fuse inside theadapter might be blown. Follow thesesteps to replace it.1. Unscrew the knurled ring at theplugÕs tip by turning it counterclock-wise, then turn over the adapterÕscigarette lighter plug so the fuse failsout.2.
