Choose the best locationBefore choosing a location for your new phone, read the INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS includedin the PRECAUTIONS AND IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. Here are some important guidelines you should consider:• The location should be close to both a phone jack and a continuous power outlet which is notswitchable.• Keep the base and handset away from sources of electrical noise such as motors and fluorescentlighting.• The base can be placed on a desk, tabletop, or mounted on a standard wall plate.B. Install the battery packCharge the battery pack for at least 15-20 hours before plugging thephone line into your phone.1) Press in on the battery cover release and slide the cover down until itcomes off.2) Connect the battery pack connector observing correct polarity (black andred wires) to the jack inside the battery compartment.Do not exert any force on this connection. It could cause damage to thebattery or handset. The plastic connector will fit together only one way.Once you are certain that you have made a good connection, then insertthe battery pack into the battery compartment. 34) Place the handset on the base.NOTE: Use only the Uniden Battery (BT-904) supplied with your phone. Replacement batteriesare also available through the Uniden Parts Department.Battery use time (per charge)From fully charged• Seven hours continuous use• Fourteen days when the handset is in the standby modeLow Battery AlertWhen the battery pack is very low and needs to be charged, the phone is programmed to eliminatefunctions in order to save power. If the phone is not in use, the talk/batt low LED flashes when thebattery pack is low.If the phone is in use, the talk/batt low LED flashes and the handset beeps. Complete yourconversation as quickly as possible and return the handset to the base for charging.Cleaning the Battery Charging ContactsTo maintain a good charge, it is important to clean the battery contactson the handset and base unit with a dry cloth or a pencil eraser aboutonce a month. Do not use any liquids or solvents.NOTE: Even when the battery pack is not being used, it will graduallydischarge over a long period of time. For optimum performance, besure to return the handset to the base unit after each telephone call.C. Connect the base unit1) Connect the AC adapter to the DC IN 9V jack and astandard 120V AC wall outlet.2) Wrap the cord inside the molded wiring channel as shown.3) Set the base unit on a desk or tabletop, and place thehandset in the base unit.4) Make sure the status LED illuminates. If the LED does notilluminate, check to see that the AC adapter is plugged inand the handset makes good contact with the basecharging contacts.NOTICE: Place the power cord so it does not create a trip hazard or where it could become chafedand create a fire or electrical hazard.NOTES:•Use only the supplied AD-310 AC adapter. Do not use any other AC adapter.•Connect the AC adapter to a continuous power supply.•Place the base unit close to the AC outlet so that you can unplug the AC adapter easily.After installing the battery pack in the handset, charge your handset at least 15-20 hours beforeplugging into the phone line. Making and Receiving CallsNOTES: • The redial/p key redials the last number dialed.• The redialed number can be up to 24 digits long.5) Connect the telephone line cord to the TEL LINE jack and atelephone outlet once the handset is fully charged.TIP: If your telephone outlet isn’t modular, contactyour telephone company for assistance.D. Choose the dialing modeMost phone systems use tone dialing which sends DTMF tones through the phone lines. Howeversome phone systems still use pulse dialing such as in rural areas. The default setting is tone dialing.Depending on your dialing system, set the mode as follows:1) Press and hold flash until you hear a confirmation tone.2) To set the dial mode for pulse dialing, press #. Or to set the dial mode for tone dialing, press*/tone. A confirmation tone sounds to indicate the setting is complete.• If you are not sure of your dialing system, set for tone dialing. Make a trial call. If the call connects,leave the setting as is, otherwise set for pulse dialing.• If your phone dialing system requires pulse dialing and you need to send DTMF tones for certainsituations during a call, you may “switch-over” to tone dialing. (Refer to “Tone Dialing Switch-over”).NOTE: Make sure your battery pack is fully charged before choosing the dial mode.4Handset On BaseAnswer call When the phone rings, remove thehandset from the base. 5TerminologyThroughout this manual, terms such as Standby and Talk Mode are used. Below is the terminologyexplanation.•Standby Mode - The handset is not in use, off the base, and talk has not been pressed. A dialtone is not present.•Talk Mode - The handset is off the base and talk has been pressed enabling a dial tone.Adjusting the Ringer and Earpiece VolumeRinger toneWhen the phone is in standby mode, pressing the vkey on the handset selects the handset ringertone. There are two ringer tones. Continue pressing the vkey to listen to all tones. The phone keepsthe last ringer tone setting selected.Earpiece volumeThe handset earpiece volume settings (Low, Medium and High) can only be adjusted during a call.Press vrepeatedly to select Low, Medium and High. When you hang up, the phone keeps the lastvolume setting selected.Ringer MuteThe end key can be used to temporarily mute the ringer tone. When the handset is off the base andthe phone is ringing, press the end key and the ringer tone will be temporarily silenced. The ringertone will return to normal starting with the next incoming call.Tone Dialing Switch-overSome telephone companies use equipment that requires pulse dialing(sometimes referred to as rotary dialing). If you need to enter tone dialing digits,you can switch-over to tone dialing during the call. For example, entering yourbank account number after you have called your bank.Initially make your call with the pulse dialing mode. Once your call connects,press */tone. Enter the desired number. These digits will be sent as tonedialing. This special number can be stored in a memory location. This isreferred to as Chain Dialing. Once the call ends, the tone mode is canceled and pulse dialing moderesumes.NOTE: The tone feature only applies when the dial mode is set to pulse.Traveling Out-of-RangeDuring a call, as you begin to move your handset too far from your base unit, noise increases. If youpass the range limits of the base unit, your call will terminate within 5 minutes.Selecting a Different ChannelIf you encounter interference while using your phone, you can manually change the phones channelfor clear operation. This function works only when the phone is in use.Press channel. The talk/batt low LED flashes, indicating the phone is changing to another channel.EXP370  12/10/1 9:37 AM  Page 5
6PageTo locate the handset (while it’s off the base), press find handset on the base. The handset beeps for 60seconds.Paging is canceled when pressing any key, find handset on the base or return the handset to thebase.Flash and Call WaitingIf you have “call waiting” service and a call waiting tone sounds while you areon a call, press flash to accept the waiting call. There is a short pause, thenyou will hear the new caller. To return to the original caller, press flash again.NOTE: You must subscribe through your local telephone company to receiveCall Waiting Service.Storing a Phone Number in MemoryYour EXP370/EXP371 phone has 10 memory locations for storing importanttelephone numbers.1) Remove the handset from the base.2) Press m. The talk/batt low LED flashes.3) Enter the phone number, up to 16 digits. If a pause is needed during thedialing sequence, press redial/p to insert a pause. Each pause counts as adigit and represents a two second delay in time between digits as they aresent.4) Press magain.5) Enter the memory location (0-9) on the keypad. Memory 1 is reserved forRocketDial. You can store data in this location by pressing 1. A tone indicates that the number isstored. If you enter a number in a location that has a previously stored number it will overwrite theexisting number without warning.NOTES: • The pause button counts as one digit. Pressing redial/p more than once increases thelength of pause between numbers.•You have 30 seconds after pressing mto enter the number you wish to store. Otherwise,you will hear a rapid beep.•You cannot store numbers in RocketDial.Dialing a Stored NumberUsing the memory location features1) Press talk, then press m.2) Enter the memory location (0-9) on the keypad. 7One-touch RocketDialYour phone is equipped with “One-touch RocketDial” for instant dialing.  It isused to dial the phone number stored in memory location 1.  (See “Storing aPhone Number in Memory”.)To instantly dial the phone number stored in memory location 1, simply pressRocketDial.  (There is no need to press talk. The phone will automatically dial.)If you press RocketDial, and a phone number is not stored in memory location1, the phone will beep rapidly and will not dial.Chain DialingThe memory locations on the handset are not limited to phone numbers. You can also store a group ofnumbers (up to 16 digits) that you need to enter once your call connects. This is referred to as ChainDialing.An example of this is a bank account number. Once you have called your bank, and are prompted to enterthe account number, simply press mand the location number where the special number has been stored.Store your special number in memory as you would a phone number. (Refer to “Storing a PhoneNumber in Memory”.)Erasing a Stored Number from Memory1) Remove the handset from the base unit.2) Press mtwice.3) Press the memory location (0-9). A tone indicates that the stored number is erased from memory.NOTE: You cannot erase the phone numbers by using the RocketDial. This is the number stored inmemory location 1.Changing the Digital Security CodeThe digital security code is an identification code used to connect the handset and the base unit.Normally, setting the code is not necessary.The first time you charge your handset, the security code is automatically set. In the rare situation thatyou suspect another cordless telephone is using the same security code, you can change the code.1) Remove the handset from the base unit. Press and hold find handset on the base.2) The handset begins emitting a paging sound. While holding find handset for at least 3 seconds,place the handset on the base unit. The paging sound stops. Leave the handset on the base formore than 3 seconds. A new random security code is set.NOTE: If the handset battery pack is completely discharged or the battery pack is removed, the digitalsecurity code will be lost. 8TroubleshootingIf your EXP370/EXP371 cordless telephone is not performing to your expectations, please try thesesimple steps.NOTE: Do not attempt to service this unit yourself. Servicing must be performed by qualifiedpersonnel.SymptomThe status LED won’t illuminate when the handset is placed in the base.The audio sounds weak and/or scratchy.Can’t make or receive calls.Handset doesn’t ring or receive a page.Severe noise interference If you still have a problemSuggestion• Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into the base and wall outlet.• Make sure the handset is properly seated in the base.• Make sure that the charging contacts on the handset and on thebase are clean.• Move the handset and/or base to a different location away frommetal objects or appliances and try again.• Press channel to help eliminate background noise.• Check both ends of the telephone line cord.• Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into the base and a walloutlet.• Disconnect the AC adapter for a few minutes, then reconnect it.• Change the digital security code. (See page 7)• Make sure that the handset is not too far from the base.• The Nickel-Cadmium battery pack may be weak. Charge the batteryfor 15-20 hours.• The handset may be too far away from the base.• Place the base away from appliances or metal objects.• Change the digital security code. 10the trouble has been corrected.Radio InterferenceRadio interference may occasionally cause buzzing and humming in yourcordless handset, or clicking noises in the base. This interference iscaused by external sources such as TV, refrigerator, vacuum cleaner,fluorescent lighting, or electrical storm. Your unit is NOT DEFECTIVE. Ifthese noises continue and are too distracting, please check around yourhome to see what appliances may be causing the problem. In addition,we recommend that the base not be plugged into a circuit that alsopowers a major appliance because of the potential for interference. Becertain that the antenna on the unit is fully extended when needed.In the unlikely event that you consistently hear other voices ordistracting transmissions on your phone, you may be receiving radiosignals from another cordless telephone or other source of interference. Ifyou cannot eliminate this type of interference, you need to change to adifferent channel.Finally, it should be noted that some cordless telephones operate atfrequencies that may cause interference to nearby TVs and VCRs. Tominimize or prevent such interference, the base of the cordless telephoneshould not be placed near or on top of a TV or VCR. If interference isexperienced, moving the cordless telephone farther away from the TV orVCR will often reduce or eliminate the interference.More Than One Cordless TelephoneIf you want to use more than one cordless telephone in your home, theymust operate on different channels. Press the channel key to select achannel that provides the clearest communication.Cordless Telephone PrivacyCordless telephones are radio devices. Communications between thehandset and base of your cordless telephone are accomplished by meansof radio waves which are broadcast over the open airways. Because of theinherent physical properties of radio waves, your communications can bereceived by radio receiving devices other than your own cordlesstelephone unit. Consequently, any communications using your cordlesstelephone may not be private.Installation ConsiderationsSelecting a LocationBefore choosing a location for your new phone, there are some importantguidelines you should consider:• The location should be close to both a phone jack and continuouspower outlet. (A continuous power outlet is an AC outlet which doesnot have a switch to interrupt its power.)• Keep the base and handset away from sources of electrical noise suchas motors or fluorescent lighting.• Be sure there is sufficient space to fully extend the base antenna.• The base can be placed on a desk or tabletop or mounted on astandard telephone wall plate.• You should charge your new phone for 15-20 hours before completingthe installation or using the handset.Telephone Line OutletsThere are two types of phone outlets:Modular JackMost phone equipment available now uses modular jacks. Phone cords arefitted with a molded plastic connector which plugs into this type of jack.If you do not have modular phone jacks, contact your local telephonecompany for information about their installation.Hardwired JackSome equipment is wired directly to a phone jack, and these types ofinstallations require a modular jack converter. This type of installation isnot difficult; however, you should contact your Uniden telephone dealeror a telephone supply store for advice about the proper adapter orconverter for your particular situation.Connecting the Telephone CordsConsider these safety guidelines before connecting the telephone cords:Caution!• Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm.• Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless thetelephone line has been disconnected.• Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines.Applying Power to the BaseThis phone requires an AC outlet, without a switch to interrupt power,and the included AC adapter. To relieve strain on the DC plug when thephone is placed on a desk or table, wrap the power cord around thestrain relief notch on the bottom of the base.NOTE: Place the power cord so that it does not create a triphazard, or where it could become chafed and create a fireor other electrical hazards.Adapter Safety FeaturesIf the AC adapter furnished with this phone has apolarized line plug (a plug having one blade widerthan the other), this plug will fit into the poweroutlet only one way. If you are unable to insertthe plug fully into the outlet, try reversing theplug.Do not alter the shape of the blades of thepolarized plug!NOTE: If you cannot plug the AC adapter into the outlet, contactsomeone about replacing the outlet.Plug the AC Adapter into a standard 120 VAC wall outlet.
