GENERALPRODUCTOVERVIEW
SmartWiresGuardiantechnologyincreasestransmissionlinereactancebyinjectingmagnetizing
reactanceinserieswiththeline.ThefirstgenerationoftheGuardianTMproductlinewasthePowerLine
Guardian®whichisaconductormounteddevice.ThePowerGuardian390operatesusingthesame
electricalconfigurationasthePowerLineGuardianbutprovide2060timesmorereactanceforagiven
currentratingthanthePowerLineGuardian.Byleveragingthetechnologydevelopmentandlessons
learnedfromthePowerLineGuardian,SmartWiressolutionswiththePowerGuardian390can
significantlyreduceunitrequirementstoachievethesameoverallreactance,andpushpowerto
underutilizedcircuits.ThePowerGuardian390isinstalledonasinglephasebasis,meaningthatfor
mosttransmissionanddistributiondeployments,therewillbeanequalnumberofunitsperphase.

ThePowerGuardian390deviceinjectsmagnetizingreactancetoincreasethelineimpedanceand
“push”powerontoparallellines.ThePowerGuardian390deviceisconnectedinserieswiththepower
circuit,operatedatlinepotentialandhasnoconnectiontoground.Thistechnologyisparticularly
effectiveinhighlymeshedelectricgridswheresparesystemcapacitycanbeutilizedtoresolveoverload
situations.Figure2illustratesthebasicelectricalconfigurationofthePowerGuardian390.
CurrentTransformers
EachPowerGuardian390isequippedwithtwoCurrentTransformers(CTs).Thefirstcurrent
transformer(CT

),isusedtoharvestasmallamountofpowerfromthetransmissionlinetopowerthe
controlandcommunicationscircuitsinthedevices.ThereisanotherseparateCT(notshown)that
sensesthelinecurrentandfeedsintothecontrolcircuitry.

CONTROLMETHODS
TherearethreeControlmethodsforthePowerGuardian390,definedbytheirlevelsofautomationand
communicationrequirements.AdeploymentofPowerGuardian390devicesonlyfunctionsinasingle
manneratanygiventime.
1. StaticThisisthesimplestcontrolmethod.ThedeploymentofPowerGuardian390devices
continuouslydeliversthedesiredlevelofreactance(thesystemisstatic)anddoesnotrequire
backhaulcommunications.Thelevelofinjectedreactancecanbeadjustedbyusinglocal
communicationsandistypicallyadjustedonaseasonalbasistoaccommodatevariousreliability
needs.
2. ManualThismethodissimilartostaticcontrol,howeverbackhaulcommunicationsare
enabled.ThisfunctionalityallowsformanualremotecontrolofthePowerGuardian390
deploymentbythesystemoperator.OperatorscanchangetheOperatingMode(Injectionvs.
Monitoring)ofindividualand/orgroupsofPowerGuardian390devices.Thisenablesrealtime
flexibilityofpowerflowcontrol.
3. Setpoint–Withthismethod,nomanualcontrolisrequired,butbackhaulcommunicationsare
necessary.ThedeploymentofPowerGuardian390devicesoperateautonomously,switching
frommonitoringtoinjectionmode(andviceversa)basedontherealtimelinecurrentor
conductortemperature.Thesesetpointsareuserdefinedandconfigurable.Anynumberofset
pointconfigurationscanbecreatedbyoperatorswithintheSmartWiressoftwareplatform.
