Operation

Surface Temperature Measurement

  1. Press the laser pointer On/Off button to activate the laser.
  2. Aim the laser dot at the surface to be measured.
  3. Press and hold the trigger to take the measurement. The temperature reading will be displayed on the LCD.
  4. Release the trigger to hold the last reading.
  5. Press the laser pointer On/Off button again to deactivate the laser.

Laser Activation

To activate and deactivate the laser, press the laser pointer On/Off button at any time while the Lasergrip is on. The laser helps in aiming at the target surface.

Display Backlight Operation

To activate and deactivate the display backlight, press the display backlight On/Off button at any time while the Lasergrip is on. The backlight illuminates the LCD screen for better visibility in low light conditions.

Battery Replacement

A low battery icon will appear on the LCD display when the Lasergrip's battery power is running low. Replace the battery immediately when the icon appears.

  1. Open the battery compartment and remove the used battery. Dispose of the used battery properly.
  2. Connect a new DC 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  3. Insert the battery into the compartment and close the compartment lid, ensuring the wiring is not pinched.

Diagram: Shows opening the battery compartment, a 9V battery with correct polarity facing upward, and a note about wiring not bulging out of the compartment.

Understanding Measurements

Distance to Spot Ratio (D:S)

The Lasergrip 774 measures surface temperature based on its distance to spot diameter ratio (D:S). As the distance between the thermometer and the surface increases, the measured surface area also increases. With a D:S ratio of 12:1, the measured surface area has a diameter of approximately 1/12th of the distance.

For the most accurate results, ensure the target surface area is at least twice the corresponding spot diameter. Insufficient surface area will lead to inaccurate results. The recommended distance for measurement is 14.17 inches (36 cm), which creates a spot measurement area of 1.18 inches (3 cm) in diameter.

Diagram: Illustrates the D:S ratio, showing a recommended distance of 14.17 inches resulting in a spot diameter of 1.18 inches, with the ratio D:S = 12:1.

Emissivity

Emissivity is a material's efficiency in emitting thermal energy. Non-reflective surfaces have higher emissivity (closer to 1) than reflective surfaces (closer to 0). Inaccurate results may occur when measuring reflective surfaces like glass, polished wood, or granite.

To take accurate temperature measurements of reflective surfaces with low emissivity:

  1. Place a strip of masking tape over the target surface.
  2. Allow the masking tape to adjust to the surface temperature for approximately 30 minutes.
  3. Measure the temperature of the taped section, which eliminates the inaccuracy issue caused by reflectivity.

Diagram: Illustrates the concept of emissivity and the masking tape method for improving measurement accuracy on reflective surfaces.
