Proposed probability-based reporting systems for thyroid. Probability-based reporting systems make recommendation for patient management evidence-based. My proposal for the thyroid cytology provided a basis for the diagnostic scheme proposed in the National Cancer Institute Thyroid Fine-Needle Aspiration State of the Science Conference (Baloch ZW, LiVolsi VA, Asa SL, et al. Diagnostic terminology and morphologic criteria for cytologic diagnosis of thyroid lesions: a synopsis of the National Cancer Institute Thyroid Fine-Needle Aspiration State of the Science Conference. Diagn Cytopathol 2008;36:425-37). The Bethesda System for reporting thyroid cytology that came out of this conference is being adopted nationally. My proposed reporting system has been used to report research findings in international meetings from countries other than United States.
