AFFORDABLE AND EFFECTIVE DISTANCE LEARNING SOLUTIONS
Due to the pandemic, the educational landscape has undergone drastic changes. In the Fall of 2020, 10% of 3000 US colleges surveyed had plans to offer their instruction completely online, with only 4% offering class fully in person. Today, 33% of post-secondary school administrators indicate they will continue to offer both remote and online course options even after their campuses have reopened and normal operations resumed.1
Hybrid learning is here to stay. In order to ensure the most engaging experience for your students and optimize academic performance, you need access to the best education technology.
That is why many educators are now implementing telepresence technology as an effective and affordable solution to serve remote students. With this technology students can be included virtually into the classroom using a robot they navigate in real-time, providing them with an immersive, real presence experience. Imagine providing your same curriculum to students present in class as those connecting from home. Telepresence robots give distance learning students the resources they need to continue their education unhindered.

TELEPRESENCE ROBOTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Universities across the United States have been experimenting and adopting Real Presence Experience to its fullest. For instance, Seattle Pacific University (SPU) offers Ohmni Mobile Telepresence Robots to their overseas students who are attending the Master's program in Digital Education Leadership.
As experts in educational technology, SPU knows that asynchronistic learning runs the risk of losing the benefit of human connection provided by a face-to-face classroom. Being in the same room at the same time with other students and the professor activates learning, which is why SPU educators explored advanced synchronous collaboration tools like Mobile Telepresence Robots.
Unlike video conferencing which is usually guided by the presenter or others in the room,

Ohmni Robot puts the student in charge when implementing HyFlex and RXP learning. A student can move the robot around the room, make eye contact, and help others see that the person is there and engaged. The robot gives students who are not physically present the same agency and freedom of movement.
A unique way SPU students utilize Ohmni Robot is to attend educational conferences. The robots allow remote students to participate and receive valuable information. Because conferences generally happen several times per year, this is a great way to stay connected with their larger educational community and stay abreast of the latest trends.

Funding Telepresence Robots
Educational funding is always tight. That's why we have compiled a list of grants that can be used for education technology that will help get telepresence robots into your classes. Most grants are available year-round and can be applied for right now.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS (ITEST)

THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE EDUCATION ACTIVITY (DODEA) GRANT PROGRAM

ITEST is an applied research and development (R&D) program providing direct student learning opportunities in pre-kindergarten through high school (PreK-12). The learning opportunities are based on the innovative use of technology to strengthen knowledge and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and information and communication technology (ICT) careers. To achieve this purpose, ITEST supports projects that engage students in technology-rich experiences that: (1) increase awareness and interest of STEM and ICT occupations; (2) motivate students to pursue appropriate education pathways to those occupations; and (3) develop STEM-specific disciplinary content knowledge and practices that promote critical thinking, reasoning, and communication skills needed for entering the STEM and ICT workforce of the future.

The quality of K-12 education is an important criterion for retention of the military family. The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is charged with the critical responsibility and privilege of educating the children of our Nation's military. Recognizing that over 1.1M military-connected students attend public schools, leveraging partnerships with school districts is paramount in influencing successful educational outcomes for militaryconnected students.

Some may not know if they want to be teachers. Some might think they want to work with younger kids, older kids. We're able to easily switch them from maybe a first-grade classroom and then the next two weeks they might be looking at an eighth-grade English class and next two weeks a high school history class, all thanks to the robots.

CARES ACT ESSER FUNDING
The Federal government's Coronavirus Relief Fund sets aside funds to make learning more accessible to students with disabilities, at-risk populations, language needs, and other challenges. Two pools of money have been set aside for K-12 education. One first is distributed to governors to be spent as they see fit to meet the needs of students and schools. The second goes directly to districts (Local Education Agencies, LEAs) based on Title 1 proportions.
Funds can be used to purchase educational technology, which could include hardware, software, and connectivity, for students served by the LEA that aids in regular, substantive educational interaction between students and educators, including low-income students and students with disabilities. This could also include assistive technology or adaptive equipment. CARES Act Section 18003(d)(9).
