Munters HCD Series
Modular desiccant dehumidifiers
Product Overview
Munters HCD series modular dehumidifiers provide end users with essential dehumidification capabilities, offering capacities ranging from 600 to 12,000 scfm. These units feature the basic HoneyCombe® rotor-drive-and-seal assembly and allow for a choice of process and reactivation fans, along with gas, steam, or electric reactivation methods.
Customers can integrate these desiccant dehumidifiers into their existing processes or air conditioning systems. For enhanced functionality, additional modules can be combined to create an HCD Plus configuration. The HCD Plus integrates process air filtration, cooling, heating, and mixing functions, providing a comprehensive, factory-assembled, skid-mounted package.
These modular dehumidifiers are utilized across a diverse range of applications, including cleanroom humidity control, chocolate-coated candy production, and central dry air systems for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Desiccant Rotor Description
The core of the dehumidifier is the desiccant rotor. Munters pioneered modern industrial dehumidification in the 1950s with the introduction of the self-regenerating desiccant rotor. The patented HoneyCombe® wheel design provides an extensive surface area for the desiccant material, facilitating efficient moisture absorption and release.
Airflow dynamics are illustrated: Reactivation air is used to regenerate the desiccant, while Process air is treated to remove moisture. Wet air enters the rotor, and Dry air exits after passing through the desiccant material.
HCD-Plus (HCD Dehumidifier with Add-on Modules)
The HCD-Plus model offers enhanced capabilities through integrated add-on modules, providing a complete air treatment solution.
Module Descriptions:
- Process air blower plenum: The process air blower plenum is insulated to avoid condensation when process air temperature is below the dew point of surrounding air. Also, the process air blower plenum provides in-line airflow to the mixing box, coil module or ductwork.
- Mixing plenum: The mixing plenum allows incoming air to be mixed with up to four other incoming air streams. Manual dampers are provided to balance the airflows. The mixed air stream can then be further conditioned by downstream modules.
- Post-heat/cool coil plenum: The coil plenum is designed to house a maximum of 10 rows of coils for direct expansion refrigeration, chilled water, hot water, steam or combinations to provide pre- or post-cooling or heating. Alternatively, electric heating elements can also be housed in this plenum. The maximum face velocity is 500 fpm for cooling coils and 900 fpm for heating coils/elements.
- Face-and-bypass plenum: The face-and-bypass plenum provides 100% bypass capabilities. Face-and-bypass dampers of low leakage design are operated by proportioning actuators.
- Pre-heat/cool coil plenum: The coil plenum is designed to house a maximum of 10 rows of coils for direct expansion refrigeration, chilled water, hot water, steam or combinations to provide pre- or post-cooling or heating. Alternatively, electric heating elements can also be housed in this plenum. The maximum face velocity is 500 fpm for cooling coils and 900 fpm for heating coils/elements.
- Filter plenum, 30% efficiency: A disposable filter of 30% efficiency has slide rails that provide easy access for maintenance.
- Filter plenum, high efficiency: A disposable, high efficiency filter of up to 95% (combined with disposable 30% efficiency pre-filter) has slide rails that provide easy side access for maintenance. Consult factory for HEPA filters and plenums.
- Skid: A structural aluminum skid of "C" channel design is between 6" to 10" in height. On smaller units, with shorter lead times, formed steel can be utilized.
HCD-Plus Component Layout Description
The diagram illustrates the modular components of the HCD-Plus system. The core dehumidification process involves a Reactivation Heater, a Dehumidifier Wheel/Cassette, and a Reactivation Fan. Process air is then directed through a series of optional modules, arranged conceptually to show potential airflow paths:
1. Process air blower plenum: Manages airflow into the system.
2. Mixing plenum: Allows for mixing of different air streams.
3. Post-heat/cool coil plenum: Houses coils for temperature control after dehumidification.
4. Face-and-bypass plenum: Provides airflow bypass capabilities.
5. Pre-heat/cool coil plenum: Houses coils for temperature control before dehumidification.
6. Filter plenum, 30% efficiency: For basic air filtration.
7. Filter plenum, high efficiency: For advanced air filtration.
8. Skid: The structural base for the unit.
The diagram shows these modules arranged conceptually, with arrows indicating potential airflow paths for process air treatment, including pre-conditioning, filtration, bypass, and post-conditioning, before the air is discharged.
