Vector License Client User Manual

About This Document

This document guides users through the procedures for managing licenses using the Vector License Client. This client is part of the New Vector License Model (NVLM), introduced around 2018, which manages licenses through a dedicated tool.

The Vector License Client facilitates various license management tasks, including:

  • Activate: Assigning licenses to a license carrier (interface, PC, or dongle).
  • Deactivate: Temporarily returning licenses, useful when changing license carriers.
  • Reactivate: Renewing license validity, typically for a 12-month period.
  • Migrate: Transitioning from older license formats to the new format.
  • License Update: Extending the maximum usable version for eligible licenses.

Starting the Vector License Client

The Vector License Client is usually installed alongside software like CANoe or CANape. To launch it, open the Windows Start menu, navigate to the program list, and select Vector License Client.

Note: The version bundled with software may be outdated. It is recommended to download the latest version from the provided link. This manual uses version V5.4 for explanations.

Security Advisory: A security vulnerability was identified in a component used by the Vector License Client. This has been resolved in V5.3. Users on older versions are strongly advised to update.

Pre-Operation Checks

Before performing operations like activation, verify that the PC can connect to the Vector license server. This check determines the appropriate procedure.

  1. Launch the Vector License Client and click the [Troubleshooting] button in the ribbon menu.
  2. Online Operation Check: If there are no red error messages in the displayed screen, online operations are possible. Refer to Section 4 for online procedures.
  3. Offline Operation Check: If red error messages are displayed, consider the following:
    • Recommended: Consult the FAQ at the end of this manual to resolve errors before proceeding with online operations.
    • Alternative: Proceed with offline procedures as described in Section 5.

Online Operations

This section covers procedures for when online operations are confirmed as possible after troubleshooting.

4.1 Activate (Online)

This procedure is for applying licenses to a device.

  1. Connect the device to your PC. Launch the Vector License Client and click the [Activate] button in the ribbon menu (not required if activating on the PC itself).
  2. The activation window will appear.
  3. Enter the Activation Key provided in your delivery note into the designated field. Click [Load] to display the licenses. Select the licenses you wish to activate (check the boxes). Choose the target device from the [License Carrier] dropdown and click [Activate].
  4. Confirm that the activated product name (License Name) and target device (License Carrier) are displayed correctly. Activation is now complete.

4.2 Deactivate (Online)

This procedure is for temporarily returning licenses from a device.

FAQ

6.1 Troubleshooting: "The Vector License Server can not be reached"

If this error occurs, click [Check Settings] on the relevant line in the Troubleshooting screen. In the Settings window, change the Proxy Settings to [Use Custom Proxy Settings], enter the Server URL and Server Port (obtain these from your IT department), and click [Test Proxy Settings]. If it shows "Connection established", online operations are possible.

6.2 Troubleshooting: "No Internet connection detected"

First, check your internet connection. If the issue persists, it might be due to security software. Try disabling your security software temporarily or test on a PC without the same security software installed.

6.3 Do I need to activate on the PC where I use the software (e.g., CANoe)?

Yes, if you are applying the license to the PC itself. If applying to an interface or dongle, you can install the Vector License Client on another PC for activation. Download links for the client and driver setup are provided.

6.4 Reactivate fails

If your software version has been updated due to maintenance benefits within the 12-month license period, Reactivate may fail for the old version. In such cases, perform a License Update instead.

6.5 Licenses no longer displayed in Vector License Client

In the Troubleshooting screen, click [Repair] for the device with the applied license. This synchronizes with the license server and may re-display the licenses if successful.
