Chapter 6. Operating the tabletStarting the tabletDo as follows:1. Check the ac power connection of the access point and tablet.Note: The battery in the tablet may not be charged the first time, and youmay need to power your tablet using ac power. If the battery inyour tablet is charged, you may operate the tablet on battery power.2. Turn on the tablet.When the self-test is complete, the IBM logo startup window closes.3. The home screen is shown if your tablet has preinstalled software.For detailed information on how to use the software, refer to its online help.If you experience any problems during startup, refer to Chapter 7, “Solvingproblems”on page 15, and Chapter 8, “Getting information, help, and service”on page 19Since the tablet is pre-configured as listed below, you may need to changesome settings on the tablet for your wireless communication. Please checkyour access point settings.vESSID: defaultvWEP: not usedvIP address: automatically assigned using DHCPYou can use the settings utility provide on the tablet to change the settings.Press the Settings button to start the utility. Using the buttonsThere are five buttons on the tablet that provide easy access to functions.vPower button —turn the tablet on and off.vBrowser button —launch the browser to access Internet Web sitesvE-mail button —send and receive e-mailvSettings button —set and modify the following settings:–Panel brightness–Word registration for Kana-kan–Access points–E-mail, browser, TCP/IP, Wireless, and other settingsvSoftware keyboard button —launch an onscreen keyboard for easy datainputUnderstanding the indication lightsThere are three indication lights which show the status of the tablet.vPower/battery status indication light–Lights up in Orange when the battery is charging.–Lights up in Green when the battery is fully charged and the tablet is on.–Flashes in Green when the system is in standby mode.–Flashes in Orange when the battery power is critically low.vWireless LAN status indication light–Flashes when the wireless LAN feature is active.vE-mail indication light–Lights up when an incoming mail is received.Attaching external devicesUSBThe tablet has a total of five USB ports. Two are found on the tablet, one oneach side. You can find three USB ports on the back of the cradle.AudioThere are two audio connectors on the right side of the tablet. You canconnect a microphone to the microphone port, and external speakers orheadphones to the speaker port.CompactFlashThe tablet has a CompactFlash slot, found above the audio connectors, thatallows you to expand your memory and storage. Chapter 7. Solving problemsTroubleshootingThe following section helps you solve problems you might encounter whileusing the tablet.Errors without messagesProblem: When I turn on the tablet, nothing appears on the screen and thetablet does not beep while starting up.Note: If you are unsure whether or not you heard any beeps, turn off thetablet; then turn it on again, and listen again.Solution: If a power-on password is set, press any key to display thepower-on password prompt. Then type the correct password and press Enter.A password problemProblem: I forgot my password.Solution: If you forget your power-on password, you have to take your tabletto an IBM reseller or marketing representative to have the password canceled.A power switch problemProblem: The system does not respond, and you cannot turn off the tabletSolution: Turn off the tablet by pressing and holding the power switch for 4seconds or more. If the tablet is still not reset, remove the ac adapter and thebattery.Wireless connection problemsProblem: Wireless LAN status indication light does not turn on.Solution: Check the power connection and the power status of your accesspoint. If these are okay, try using your tablet closer to the access point andrestart your tablet.Problem: ″Internet connection is not available″message appears during tabletoperation.Solution: Check the power connection and the power status of your accesspoint. If this does not solve the problem, check the ″Wireless network″settings ofyour tablet system settings screen. The ESSID, Channel, and WEP key mustmatch the settings on the access point. For setting details, see your systemadministrator.If you do not know or are unable to get the access point settings, you mayuse the ″Searching access point″function in the tablet settings utility. For moreinformation, see its online help.Problem: The brower or e-mail utility does not work.Solution: Check the ″Browser″or ″E-mail″settings of your tablet systemsettings screen. For detailed information regarding these settings, pleasecontact your system administrator.Standby problemsProblem: The tablet enters standby mode immediately after Power-On Selftest(POST) (the power/battery status indication light turns orange).Solution: Make sure that:vThe battery is charged.vThe operating temperature is within the acceptable range. Refer toAppendix A, “Specifications”on page 23 in this Guide.If these items are correct, have the tablet serviced.Problem: Power/battery status indication light flashes in orange, and thetablet immediately turns off.Solution: The battery power is getting critical low. Connect the ac adapter tothe tablet, or replace the battery with a fully charged one.Problem: The tablet does not return from standby mode.Solution: The tablet automatically enters standby mode when the battery isdepleted. Connect the ac adapter to the tablet.Tablet screen problemsProblem: The screen stays on even after you turn off your tablet.Solution: Press and hold the power switch for 4 seconds or more to turn offyour tablet; then turn it on again.Problem: Missing, discolored, or bright dots appear on the screen every timeyou turn on your tablet.16 NetVista W50 Wireless Internet Appliance (Type 8368) Getting Started
Solution: This is an intrinsic characteristic of the TFT technology. Your tablet’sdisplay contains multiple thin-film transistors (TFTs). A small number ofmissing, discolored, or bright dots on the screen might exist all the time.Battery problemsProblem: The battery cannot be fully charged by the power-off method in thestandard charge time for your tablet.Solution: The battery might be over-discharged. Do the following:1. Turn off the tablet.2. Make sure that the over-discharged battery is in the tablet.3. Connect the ac adapter to the tablet and let it charge, or charge it usingthe cradle.If the battery cannot be fully charged in 24 hours, use a new battery.Problem: The operating time for a fully charged battery is short.Solution: Discharge and recharge the battery. If your battery’s operating timeis still short, use a new battery.Problem: The tablet does not operate with a fully charged battery.Solution: The surge protector in the battery might be active. Turn off thetablet for one minute to reset the protector; then turn on the tablet again.Problem: The battery does not charge.Solution: You cannot charge the battery when it is too hot. If the battery feelshot, remove it from the tablet and allow it to cool to room temperature. Afterit cools, reinstall it and recharge the battery. If it still cannot be charged, haveit serviced.Other problemsProblem: The tablet does not turn off with the power switch.Solution: Turn off the tablet by pressing and holding the power switch for 4seconds or more. If the tablet is still not reset, remove the ac adapter and thebattery.Starting the BIOS Setup UtilityYour tablet provides a program, called IBM BIOS Setup Utility, that enablesyou to select various setup parameters. The panels in this utility are asfollows:vDate Setting: Set the date.Chapter 7. Solving problems 17
vTime Setting: Set the time.vPassword Setting: Set a password.vRestart: Restart the system.To start IBM BIOS Setup Utility, do as follows:1. Turn off the tablet.2. Press and hold the Browser button; then press the Power button.3. Release the Browser button after the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears.4. Using the buttons on the right of the tablet, select menu items and changeparameters as desired.5. If youexperience a problem with your tablet, the first place to start is thetroubleshooting information of your tablet documentation. If you suspect asoftware problem, see the documentation, including README files and onlinehelp, that comes with the operating system or application program.Most IBM computers and servers come with a set of diagnostic programs thatyou can use to help you identify hardware problems. See the troubleshootinginformation of your tablet documentation for instructions on using thediagnostic programs.The troubleshooting information or the diagnostic programs might tell youthat you need additional or updated device drivers or other software.
