If motion is detected by the WDUthe MAU will quickly countdown to analarm condition, unless disarmed.Once an Alarm condition is detected, theMAU sends a message to RRMS usingyour telephone line. RRMS will attemptto notify responsible parties and localauthorities in accordance with yourMonitoring Service Agreement. The Master Alarm Unit, KeychainRemotes, and Wireless Detection Unitsinclude a "Panic Button" feature that letsyou signal an emergency at any time. The Panic Alarm sounds the siren andtriggers a phone call to RRMS.Not for use outdoors.Thank you for choosing the LaserShield ®Instant Security System. HOW TO SET UP YOUR SYSTEMPage 8 LaserShield ®Instant Security System OWNER’S MANUALSECTION TWOPULLPositioning the Master Alarm UnitPlace the MAU in a location that is close to awall telephone jack and also where the voiceannouncements can be heard. It can beplaced anywhere in your home or office whereyou can see its signal lights and reach itconveniently for, among other things, toaccess the panic button. The removable battery protection strip isthe same for the MAU and WirelessDetection UnitsConnect devices in the followingsequence, with the LaserShield ®closest to the wall outlet:•LaserShield ®MAU• Fax Machine (plugs into LaserShield ®MAU)• Caller ID Box• Answering Machine• TelephoneSet up is fast and easy. Basically, you need toplug in your units, position and link them, andmake a phone call to activate 24/7 monitoringfor better protection. A voice annunciator notonly talks you through the setup, but also willadvise you of System status or abnormalconditions.Plug MAU into a Telephone LineYour LaserShield ®Master Alarm Unit must beconnected to a telephone line to contactRRMS when it detects a security threat.Always connect the MAU directly into the walltelephone jack. The MAU works best with a directconnection to the wall telephone jack. Toconnect it through a PBX, please contactLaserShield ®Customer Care forassistance. Connecting through a PBX orother telephone switching system mayprevent or reduce reliability in reportingalarm events to RRMS.Plug the included telephone cord into theconnector marked "to wall" on the back of theMAU. Then plug the other end into the walltelephone jack. If your telephone jack isoccupied by another phone or device, simplyplug that phone or device into the jack in therear of the MAU marked "to phone".Remove the Battery Protection StripsThe LaserShield ®Master Alarm Unit (andWireless Detection Units) are shipped withremovable battery protection strips. Just carefully pull out the protective striptabs located on the bottom of each unit.Your System cannot contact RRMS if theline is busy or not connected, or if a phoneis left off the hook. The use of DSL or other broadband telephoneservice may prevent your System fromtransmitting alarm signals to RRMS. YourSystem should be connected to a line notused for DSL. IMMEDIATELY AFTERINSTALLING DSL OR BROADBANDTELEPHONE SERVICE, YOU MUST TESTTHE SYSTEM’S SIGNAL TRANSMISSIONWITH RRMS.If you have "Privacy Manager" as a feature onyour telephone, you must do one of two thingsto assure that RRMS can call you in event ofan alarm. Either disable or cancel PrivacyManager with your phone company, or provideus with a different phone number for RRMS tocontact you at your premises.
HOW TO SET UP YOUR SYSTEMLaserShield ®Instant Security System OWNER’S MANUAL Page 9SECTION TWOWhere to Position the Wireless Detection Unit• Across from the main entry area• 4-6 feet off the floor(optimal height is 5 feet)• Unobstructed viewPosition Your Wireless Detection UnitPositioning the Wireless Detection UnitPlace the WDU in a corner, aimed in thedirection a burglar would have to pass to enterareas of your home or business. Optimumheight for the WDU is 4-6 feet. Typically, higher placement of the WDU increases rangeand distance. Obstructions such as furniture, columns or narrow corridors can impair therange of detection. Place an additional WDUin a master bedroom, as burglars tend tofrequent this room. You can check the area of coverage bywatching the red light in the motion sensorwindow, which will flash on and off as youmove.Adjust the location and position of the WDU toobtain the best coverage. Avoid aiming motionsensors directly at heating or air conditioningregisters or large panes of non-draped glass.Large glass areas that receive direct sunlightcan trigger an alarm condition. Do not arm theSystem when it is placed in a room withwindows left open. Motions sensors do notsee through glass so if windows are closedthe System will not be disturbed by outsideactivities, such as pets, and gardeners.Pet Owners: Please refer to page 18 "UsingLaserShield ®with Pets".Plug MAU into PowerPlug the AC Power Adapter (supplied) into thewall and insert the DC connector into thepower jack located on the back of the MasterAlarm Unit.Push and hold the Power Button on the MAUuntil the voice says "LaserShield on." USING LASERSHIELD WITH PETSPage 18 LaserShield ®Instant Security System OWNER’S MANUALSECTION FOURPet ShieldPets can trigger false alarms by moving infront of the motion sensor while the Systemis armed.LaserShield ®provides a Pet Shield thatnarrows the coverage area of the motionsensor window, both vertically andhorizontally, thus creating pet "safe zones"where animals can pass.Using the Pet Shield reduces the coveragepattern of your motion sensor. Werecommend pets be isolated to a non-protected area. If your pet must beallowed to freely roam your premises thenusing the Pet Shield allows you to set up abasic coverage pattern for the motionsensor.Because cats and dogs jump on furniture, place your WDU at a height where pets canmove safely beneath the detection area. You can aim the coverage of your WDU bywatching the test light inside the motionsensor window, while moving about orallowing pets to move through the protectedarea. You may have to rotate your WDU leftor right a bit to move detection coverageaway from the backs of furniture or areaspets may access or frequent. Adjust theposition and height of the WirelessDetection Unit so that your pets can moveabout freely without triggering an alarm. To Install your Pet ShieldSlide the Pet Shield into the groove at thebottom of the motion sensor window on theWireless Detection Unit.
