2-2Chapter 2: Card installationFollow these instructions to install the WiFi-g™ card in your system.1. Remove the computer cover (if your motherboard is already installed ina chassis).2. Remove the bracket opposite the PCI slot that you intend to use.Keep the screw for later use.3. Align the WiFi-g™ card connector with the slot and press firmly untilthe card is completely seated on the slot.4. Secure the card to the chassis with the screw you removed earlier.5. Replace the computer cover, then connect the power plug.6. Connect the omni-directional antenna twist-on connector to theantenna connector (male) of the WiFi-g™ card.7. ASUS WiFi-g™ WLAN PCI card2-3A WiFi-g™ card installed to an ASUS motherboard2.1.3 Placing the antennaThe WiFi-g™ card comes with anomni-directional and moveabledipolar antenna to maximize thecard coverage.Place the antenna at an elevatedlocation to receive or transmit bettersignal. Do not place the antennaunder your table or in a closedcompartment.The speed of wireless transmission decreases as you move fartherfrom the access point. Minimize the distance between the WiFi-g™card and the access point (Infrastructure mode) or between theWiFi-g™ card and other wireless devices  to achieve a faster datatransmission rate.2.1.4 Operating rangeThe ASUS WiFi-g™ card range is dependent on the operatingenvironment. Every home or office layout varies in obstacles, barriers, orwall types that could reflect or absorb radio signals. For example, twowireless devices in an open space can achieve an operating distance ofup to 200ft, while the same devices can only achieve up to 80ft when usedindoors.
2-4Chapter 2: Card installation2.2 Driver and utilities installation• The contents of the WiFi-g™ support CD are subject to changewithout notice. Visit the ASUS website for driver/utilities updates.• If you are using a Windows® operating system, your computerauto-detects the card during start-up and displays an Add NewHardware Wizard window. Click Cancel then proceed with thefollowing instructions.To install the WiFi-g™ card driver and utilities:1. Place the WiFi-g™support CD to theoptical drive.2. Click Install ASUSWLAN Card Utilities/Driver when the ASUSWiFi-g™ installationwindow appears.If Autorun is NOT enabled in your computer, browse the contents of thesupport CD and double click the Setup.exe file to run the CD.3. Follow screen instructions to install the WiFi-g™ card driver andutilities.4. When installation is finish, restart your computer.By default, the device automatically adjusts the data rate to maintain anoperational wireless transmission. Therefore, a wireless device that isclose to the access point may operate at higher speeds while a wirelessdevice far from the access point may operate at lower speeds.Site surveyA site survey (utility provided with the ASUS WiFi-g™ card) analyzes theinstallation environment and recommends the best location for wirelessLAN devices and access points.
Chapter 3This chapter provides information onhow to set up the card in your homeor office network using the setupwizard.Home and office setup
3-2Chapter 3: Starting up3.1 Setting the card in your homeAfter you have installed the card drivers and utilities to your system, youare now ready to setup the WiFi-g™ card in your home network.Windows® XP wireless optionsWhen you are using Windows® XP, a Wireless Option window appearsduring startup. Select “Only use ASUS utilities and disable XP wirelessfunction”, then click OK.3.2 One Touch wizard3.2.1 Launching the One Touch wizardMake sure that you selected the most appropriate configuration foryour wireless home network before you proceed. Refer to section 1.5“Recommended network setup” for details.The One Touch wizard allows easy configuration of WiFi-g™ card. Thisutility launches automatically when you restart the system after installingthe WiFi-g™ card drivers and utilities. The One Touch wizard helps you in1. Configuring the WiFi-g™ card as an access point, and in2. Setting the Internet connection sharing feature.You can also launch this utility in the Windows® desktop by clicking Start >All Programs > ASUS Utility > WLAN Card > Setup Wizard. The OneTouch wizard welcome window appears.Make sure you select the ASUS utilities option to avail of the WiFi-g™soft AP features.
ASUS WiFi-g™ WLAN PCI card3-33.2.2 Creating your own wireless LANYou can create your own wireless local area network (WLAN) in yourhome using the WiFi-g™ card Software Access Point (Soft AP) feature.Create your own WLAN if:1. you do not have an existing access point in your home network2. your computer is connected to the Internet and you intend to share theconnection to other computers in your home (other computers musthave an installed IEEE 802.11b/g wireless LAN adapter such asCentrino notebooks or wireless-enabled PDAs)3. you are using Windows® XP/Server 2003 or Linux operating system.To create your own WLAN:1. In the Operation Mode field,select Create a new WirelessLAN (AP), then select OneTouch (Recommended forhome users).2. Click Next.3. The wizard displays the deviceSSID. The service set identifieror SSID identifies a device in awireless network. A wirelessdevice must have the sameSSID as that of the WiFi-g™card to establish connection.Check the Data encryption(WEP-enabled) option toenable data encryption. ClickNext when finished.By default, the wizard selects the wireless channel with the clearestsignal and disables data encryption. For home users, werecommended that you keep the default settings for best results.
3-4Chapter 3: Starting up4. The wizard configures theWiFi-g™ card wireless LANsettings. Click Finish to closethe wizard, or Next to setupyour Internet and home networksettings.7. Click Next to setup your Internetand home network.5. Click the balloon in theWindows® taskbar after youchanged the WLAN settings.6. A Wireless NetworkConnection Status windowappears. Configure the wirelessLAN settings from this window,then click Close.
ASUS WiFi-g™ WLAN PCI card3-58. The wizard checks your Internetconnection. Select the Check orcreate a new Internetconnection right now option tocheck/create an Internetconnection. Otherwise, selectthe My computer isconnecting to the Internetnow option to continue.Click OK when finished.9. The wizard selects the currentInternet connection from theConnections field. Check theEnable firewall box to enablethe Internet firewall, then clickNext to continue.10. A warning message appears. Click OK to allow the wizard to bridge theWiFi-g™ card and your selected Internet connection.Selecting Check or create a new Internet connection right nowopens a Network Connections window. Change or set your Internetconnections from this window.Enabling the Internet firewall protects the computers in your homenetwork from unauthorized access by computers outside your network.
3-6Chapter 3: Starting up3.2.3 Connecting to an access pointIf you have an existing access point in your home, follow these instructionsto connect the WiFi-g™ card to the access point.1. Select the Connect to otherWireless LAN (Station) optionfrom the setup wizard window,then click Next.2. This is wireless LAN network is called anAd-hoc network.To connect to another WLAN-enabled computer:1. Select the Connect to otherWireless LAN (Station) optionfrom the setup wizard window,then click Next.2. The WiFi-g™ card scans theavailable access point(s) andwireless devices within itsoperating range. Select awireless device  , then clickNext.The window design changes from Wireless LAN to Ad Hoc when youhighlight a wireless device from the list.

Click Nextto setup the TCP/IP settings.In an Ad-hoc network, you must specify the WiFi-g™ card IP addressmanually. Make sure that the IP address of the WiFi-g™ card is on thesame sub-domain as that of the wireless device to establishconnection (e.g. If the wireless device IP is 192.168.0.1, then theWiFi-g™ card IP must be 192.168.0.X, where X = 2 ~ 255).
3-10Chapter 3: Starting up3.3 Setting the card in your officeIf you are familiar with wireless network settings, you can configure theWiFi-g™ card using the Office User (Advanced Setup) option in thesetup wizard.To setup the card using the Customized option:1. Launch the setup wizardfollowing the instructions insection 3.2.1.2. When the setup wizard welcomewindow appears, select Createa new wireless LAN (AP) fromthe Operation Mode field, thenselect Customized (Office andadvanced users).3. Click Next.4. The wizard displays thecomputer SSID and channelinformation. Click Next.By default, the wizardselects the channel with theclearest signal. To changethis, uncheck the AutoChannel Selection, thenselect a channel from thedrop-down list.By default, the wizardenables the WEP encryptionand automatically assignsthe first 64-bit WEP key byrandom.5. Check or uncheck the Dataencryption (WEP enabled) fieldto enable or disable the WEPencryption, then click Next.

Click the Windows® Start button,then select Programs > ASUSUtility > WLAN Card > SiteMonitor, orRight-click the Control Centericon on the Windows taskbar,then select Site Monitor.2. Click OK when the Site SurveyMessage window appears.The Site Monitor main window displays the available wireless connectionsand the signal-to-noise (SNR) value of a selected connection.Some Access Points disable their SSID broadcasting to hidethemselves from the Site Monitor. You may join these APs if you knowtheir SSID.
