DRAFT - Agere #3: 05/14/2002Quick Installation Guide 1-1Compaq CONFIDENTIAL—For Internal Use Only14 May 2002File: CMPQ_MM1.fm1Getting StartedIntroductionThe Compaq Wireless LAN MultiPort W200 allows you toaccess wireless Local Area Networks, share a local printer andfiles with others in your network, access the Internet, and roamabout the office—wire-free.This wireless Local Area Network solution is designed for bothlarge and small businesses, and it is scalable so that you can addusers and new network features as your networking needs grow.Using a Wireless Local Area NetworkThis product is a Local Area Network (LAN) device. A LAN istwo or more computers that are connected to each other in orderto share files or common equipment such as a printer or a modem.A wireless LAN provides the same functionality of a wirednetwork, but it eliminates the need to install networking cablesand other networking equipment. Not only is a wireless LANeasier to deploy, but it also allows for “roaming.”For example, when using a notebook computer with a WirelessLAN MultiPort W200, you can roam from a conference room toan office without being disconnected from the network.
1-2 Quick Installation GuideDRAFT - Agere #3: 05/14/2002Compaq CONFIDENTIAL—For Internal Use Only14 May 2002File: CMPQ_MM1.fmFeatures and RequirementsA wireless LAN includes the following features:■Support for the IEEE 802.11b Standard■2.4-GHz band operation■Networkspeedsupto11Mbps■Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryptionTo participate in a wireless LAN, you need the following items:■Compaq Wireless LAN MultiPort W200■Software CD containing application, drivers, softwarereference guide, and help file■A computer with a MultiPort bay, a CD drive, and MicrosoftWindows 98 SE, Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows XPProfessional or Home Edition. The Wireless LAN MultiPort W200 is WiFi (Wireless Fidelity)certified and will work with any other WiFi certified base stationor wireless client adapter.
Quick Installation Guide 1-3DRAFT - Agere #3: 05/14/2002Compaq CONFIDENTIAL—For Internal Use Only14 May 2002File: CMPQ_MM1.fmSelecting a Network ModeA wireless LAN can be configured for two different modes ofoperation. While each method has its advantages, one may bebetter suited for your needs. Review the following configurationsto determine which mode is best for you.■“Peer-to-Peer Network”■“Base Station Network”Peer-to-Peer NetworkAlso called “ad hoc” network. This mode is the easiest to deployand is ideal for small offices. As a user on this type of network, you are able to share files with other employees, print to a sharedoffice printer, and access the Internet through a shared modem. However, with peer-to-peer networking your computer is onlyable to communicate with other wireless computers that arewithin range and in your wireless workgroup.Base Station NetworkAlso called “infrastructure” network. The key difference betweena wireless Base Station network and a peer-to-peer network is theaddition of one extra element—the base station or access point.Additionally, the wireless Base Station can provide access to anexisting wired LAN. This link allows computers on theinfrastructure wireless LAN to access the other wired LAN’sresources and tools, including Internet access, electronic maildelivery, file transfer, and printer sharing.Characteristics • Networked computers send data directly toeach otherAdvantages • Simple to set up• Cost-efficientDisadvantages • Communication is limited to those who are inrange
1-4 Quick Installation GuideDRAFT - Agere #3: 05/14/2002Compaq CONFIDENTIAL—For Internal Use Only14 May 2002File: CMPQ_MM1.fmCharacteristics Networked computers communicate with eachother through a dedicated base station. All data transmitted between the computers onthis wireless LAN passes through the basestation.Advantages Extended range: The access point extends therange of the wireless LAN. Each computer cancommunicate with other computers equippedfor wireless networking that are within therange of the access point.Roaming: As you move throughout thebuilding, the Wireless LAN MultiPort W200determines the best access point to use toensure continuous communication with thenetwork.Network connectivity: An access point canprovide wireless LAN access to an existingwired network by bridging the two networkstogether. This gives users of the wireless LANaccess to all the functions of a wirednetwork—from file server access to electronicmail and the Internet.Disadvantages Because this network mode offers morefeatures, it requires additional components andsetup time to deploy.Requirements One base station, such as the:• WL310 Wireless Home Office Gateway• WL410 Wireless SMB Access Point• WL510 Wireless Enterprise Access Point

Quick Installation Guide A-3DRAFT - Agere #3: 05/14/2002Compaq CONFIDENTIAL—For Internal Use Only14 May 2002File: CMPQ_MM_A.fmThe range of the wireless signal is related to the Transmit Rate ofthe wireless communication. Communications at lower TransmitRates will travel larger distances.■The range of your wireless devices can be affected when theantennas are placed near metal surfaces and solid high-densitymaterials.■Range is also impacted due to “obstacles” in the signal path ofthe radio that may either absorb or reflect the radio signal. The listed range values listed are typical distances as measured atthe Compaq laboratories. These values may provide a rule ofthumb for indoor installations, and may vary according to theactual radio conditions at the location where the product will beinstalled.■In Open Office environments, antennas can “see” each other,i.e. there are no physical obstructions between them.■In Semi-open Office environments, work space is divided byshoulder-height, hollow wall elements; antennas are atdesktop level.■In Closed Office environments, work space is separated byfloor-to-ceiling brick walls.Modulation Technique Direct Sequence Spread SpectrumCCK CCK DQPSK DBPSKRange/Transmit Rate 11 Mb/s 5.5 Mb/s 2 Mb/s 1 Mb/sOpen Office 160 m(525 ft.) 270 m(885 ft.) 400 m(1300 ft.) 550 m(1750 ft.)Semi-Open Office 50 m(165 ft.) 70 m(230 ft.) 90 m(300 ft.) 115 m(375 ft.)Closed Office 25 m(80 ft.) 35 m(115 ft.) 40 m(130 ft.) 50 m(165 ft.)Receiver Sensitivity -82 dBm -87 dBm -91 dBm -94 dBmDelay Spread(FER of <1%) 65 ns 225 ns 400 ns 500 ns
