Welcome! 
Your Device is designed to let you to read, watch videos, listen to music, play games, run apps, 
browse the Internet, and stay connected–all on one device.   
This short, informative guide will familiarize you with many Device features, and can 
generally be read in less than 15 minutes.  
Additional help is available on the Device Support website at [INCLUDE URL].

Prior to using your Device 
Before you use your Device, do the following: 
 Charge the battery 
 Unlock your Device 
The following sections walk you through the above actions in addition to providing information 
about the Device interface.  
Charging the battery 
To charge your Device, connect it to a power outlet using the included power adapter.  
The indicator light on the bottom edge of the device will turn amber while charging and green 
when the battery is fully charged. When your Device is on, a lightning bolt will appear on the 
battery indicator at the top of the screen. If the indicator light does not turn green, make sure that 
the power cable is fully inserted into your Device and that the power adapter is securely inserted 
into the power outlet. If your Device is still not charging, try another electrical outlet.   
Fully charging your Device should take 4 hours. When fully charged, the battery indicator will 
appear filled. 
Unlocking your Device 
To unlock your Device, press the power button to wake it up and display the unlock screen, then 
press the orange ribbon and swipe your finger to the left across the screen. 
Setting up & registering your Device 
If you’re reading this guide, you’ve probably completed the Device setup process. This includes 
connecting to a Wi-Fi network and registering your Device to a Company account.

Basics 
Speakers: The top edge of your Device contains stereo speakers for audio content.  
Headphone jack: Plug in headphones or your own external speakers. Plugging in headphones or 
external speakers will turn off the built-in speakers. 
Micro-USB/power port: To charge your Device from a power outlet, connect it to a power 
outlet using the included power adapter. You can use a USB cable (not included) to connect your 
Device to a computer for transferring files. 
Power button: To turn on your Device, press the power button. To put your Device in sleep 
mode, press and release the power button. If you need to turn off the Device completely, such as 
when traveling on an airplane, press and hold the power button for seven seconds until the screen 
goes blank. If your Device does not power on or is unresponsive during use, you can do a hard 
restart by pressing and holding the power button for 20 seconds. The power button has a charge 
indicator light that is amber when your Device is charging and will turn off when the battery is 
fully charged. 
Touchscreen actions 
Your Device features a touchscreen interface that allows you to perform many tasks with a few 
gestures. 
To select an item, simply tap it.  
To turn a page or advance through your content libraries, simply swipe your finger left or right.  
Swipe your finger up or down to navigate your content.

Chapter 1 
The Device Interface 
Status Bar  
The Device Status Bar is located at the top of the screen and displays the Home icon, Quick 
Settings icon, Wi-Fi indicator, battery indicator, and the time. 
 Home Button: Tap the Home button from anywhere on your Device to return to the Home 
screen.  
 Notifications: Messages generated by games and applications. You can select a sound to 
alert you of incoming notifications in Settings. 
 Quick Settings: Select to display settings for the most commonly performed tasks 
including, locking and unlocking your Device’s screen rotation, adjusting volume, setting display 
brightness, accessing Wi-Fi settings, and syncing. Tap the More to bring up more Device 
Settings. 
 Wi-Fi Indicator: The number of bands represents the strength of the Wi-Fi signal at your 
current location. 
 Battery Indicator: The degree to which the battery is filled represents the remaining 
charge in the battery. 
Searching 
The search field is located at the top the Home screen and content pages. Tap the search field to 
bring up the onscreen keyboard. After you enter your search criteria, tap the Search key on the 
keyboard. You can enter a letter in the search field, and search for content beginning with that 
letter.   
Tabs  
Tabs on the Home screen represent the major content types: Books, Newsstand, Docs, Music, 
Video, and Web.  Select a tab to view all of the stored content in that category either on the 
device or in the cloud. For example, selecting Newsstand displays all magazines and newspapers 
including individual issues and subscriptions.

Content is displayed on “shelves” in either a grid or list view for books, newsstand, docs, and 
web. To scroll, drag your finger anywhere in the content item. To quick scroll, flick your finger. 
To sort content, tap and release the sort control menu. Sorting options differ depending upon 
content type. For example, you can sort your books by most recent (default), author, or title. 
Home Screen 
The Home screen contains all of the content on your device in a home screen view. To advance 
the home screeen, swipe your finger across the screen. Each item will appear once in the home 
screeen. An item’s position is determined by when it was most recently accessed. Newly 
purchased items are marked with a  “New” badge. 
Favorites 
You can designate any item on your Device as a Favorite. Favorites are located below the home 
screen, and can be added in two ways: 
 Tap and hold to drag an item from the home screen to the Favorites section. 
 Tap and hold an item to display the context menu and select “Add to Favorites”.  
Favorites will still appear in the library for that content type. To remove an item from Favorites, 
tap and hold the item to display the context menu and select “Remove from Favorites”. 
Soft Keys 
Soft Keys are located at the bottom of the screen and bring up additional actions and/or settings, 
and differ depending upon the application. For example, within the Music application, selecting 
the soft key displays Downloads, Settings, and Help.

Device Content  
Books 
Your Device gives you access to features that are not available with printed materials. 
Dictionary: [DESCRIBE] 
Search: Click the magnifying glass soft key to bring up the keyboard. Enter the text you want to 
search for and tap Go to perform the search. The default search is within the current document.  
Customizing your text display: The Device provides a quick way to adjust the appearance of 
books and periodicals by changing the font style, typeface, line spacing, margins, and color 
mode.

Newsstand  
Newsstand displays magazines and newspapers including individual issues and subscriptions. 
Back issues are aggregated together to keep your newsstand organized. The action you take to 
display back issues depends upon your view: 
Grid View: Back issues of periodicals are represented by a stack. Tap a stack to open the 
most recent issue in that stack. To expand a stack and view each issue, tap and hold to 
display the context menu and select “View all Issues”. To restack, tap and hold to display the 
context menu and select “Collapse Issues”. 
List View: The number of back issues displays next to the periodical name. Tap the number 
next to display all issues. Tap again to collapse the list.

Once you have expanded a stack or list, issues will behave like any other content on the shelf. 
Docs 
You can add content, such as documents, music, videos, and photos to your Device without a 
Wi-Fi connection, by connecting it to your computer via a USB cable, (not included). Your 
Device will work with any computer running Mac OS X 10.2 or later, or Windows 2000 or later. 
When you first connect the Device to a computer’s USB port, it will appear as an external 
storage drive or volume on the computer’s desktop. You can add files to these directories, and 
you can copy, move, or delete the files that are already there. Note that Device is not usable as a 
device while in USB drive mode.

Applications 
Your Device can run a variety of applications. Just like other content, apps will display in the 
home screen in addition to displaying in the Apps library. 
Applications use soft keys to display additional. To launch an application, tap the apps’ icon. For 
detailed instructions on how to use a specific application, refer to the Help for that application. 
Web 
Your Device includes a fully functional web browser that supports Flash, bookmarks, history, 
and searches. To access the web browser, on the Home page select the Browser icon or select the 
Web tab. You can have multiple tabs open by selecting the “+” symbol. Use the soft keys to go 
forward and back within web pages, add a bookmark, share a web page, view history, view 
downloads and access settings to customize your browser experience.

Acquiring Content 
Shop the Device Store anytime, anywhere 
Company offers a wide selection of books, newspapers, magazines, music, videos, as well as 
popular games. To acquire content within each content category, simply tap the store link in the 
top right corner of each content library screen. You can also purchase applications by selecting 
the App Store icon on the Home screen.

Customizing Your Device Settings 
Quick Settings 
Your Device includes a series of settings that allow you to customize your device.  
Tap the Quick Settings icon located on the status bar to display settings for the most commonly 
performed tasks. To exit settings, either tap the Back soft key to retrace your steps or tap the 
Home icon. 
Locked/Unlocked: Select to lock/unlock screen rotation. 
Volume: Use the slider to adjust Device volume. 
Brightness: Use the slider to adjust the screen brightness. Select “Automatic Brightness” to 
adjust screen brightness automatically based upon the ambient light. 
Wi-Fi: Contains an option to connect/disconnect from a Wi-Fi network and displays a list of 
detected Wi-Fi networks. To receive a notification when an open network is available select 
“Network Notification”. 
More Settings 
Tap the More icon to display additional Device Settings. 
Customer Feedback & Support: Includes FAQs & Troubleshooting, Device help topics, a link 
for contacting Customer Service, and a form for sending feedback. 
My Account: Indicates the Company account name to which your Device is registered. 
Available Account settings include:  
Deregister/Register: Use this option to register and deregister the device. 
Change Device Name: Select to change the name displayed in the top left corner of the 
Home screen.  
Sounds: Select to access sound settings. 
Volume: Use the slider to adjust the volume. 
Notification Sounds: Select a sound for incoming notifications. 
Display: Select to access display settings.

Brightness: Use the slider to adjust screen brightness.  
Auto Brightness: Select to adjust screen brightness automatically based upon ambient light. 
Screen Timeout: Specify the number of minutes of inactivity before your Device goes to 
sleep. 
Security: Set a device password and security credentials. 
Lock Screen Password: Enter a password to restrict access to your Device. You’ll 
subsequently be prompted to enter the password whenever you turn on the device or wake it 
from sleep. The first time you toggle ON, you will be prompted to set a password.  
Install Secure Credentials: Click to install a certificate. Prior to installing, use a USB cable 
(not included) to connect your Device to a computer and transfer the certificate to the Device 
root. 
Credential Storage Password: Set a password to protect the passwords associated with your 
secure credentials/certificates. 
Use Secure Credentials: Toggle ON to use installed certificates. 
Clear Credential Storage: Select to clear your stored credentials. Note that this will also 
delete your Credential Storage Password. 
Applications: Displays a list of the applications installed on your Device. Information includes 
application name, number of processes, and number of services. 
Date & Time: Manually set the time and date or allow the system to do it for you. 
Automatic: Select to let Device set the date and time automatically. If toggled OFF, the 
following options display: Set Time and Set Date. 
Select Time Zone: Choose from a list of world time zones. 
Wireless Network: Toggle Wi-Fi ON or OFF. You also configure advanced wireless settings 
here, including IP and HTTP Proxy. 
Device Keyboard: Use to customize Device keyboard behavior. Settings include: 
Auto-capitalization: Automatically corrects capitalization based upon standard grammar 
rules. 
Quick fixes: Automatically corrects common typos. 
Device: Displays available storage space, device serial number, Wi-Fi MAC Address, and build 
number. Device also includes the restore option:

Restore to Factory Defaults: Restores your Device to its original factory settings and 
restarts it. You should select this action only if instructed to do so by Device Customer 
Service.  
Legal: Provides trademark, copyright, and other notices about the software installed on your 
Device.

to the following two conditions:  
(1) this device may not cause interference, and  
(2) this device must accept any interference, including interference that may cause undesired

Restrictions: 
(i) the device for operation in the band 5150-5250 MHz is only for indoor use to reduce the

Pacemaker 
The Health Industry Manufacturers Association recommends that a minimum separation  
of 15 cm (6 inches) be maintained between a device and a pacemaker to avoid potential  
interference with the pacemaker. These recommendations are consistent with the 
independent research by the recommendations of Wireless Technology Research. 
Persons with pacemakers should do the following: 
      •   ALWAYS keep the device more than 15 cm (6 inches) from their pacemaker when  
           the device is turned ON.
