High Precision Portable
Salinity Refractometer
Thank you for purchasing this AquaMarin high precision salinity refractometer with automatic
temperature compensation from Maidenhead Aquatics, the UK’s leading specialist aquatics retailer.
Features:
Salinity Range: 0-100% salinity
Accuracy: +/- 1% (1ppt)
Automatic temperature compensation: Range of 10°c to 30°c (50°f to 86°f)
Supplied with: Calibrating screwdriver, pipette & durable protective case
Parts: Scale:
1 – Daylight plate & prism
2 – Calibration screw
3 – Focus Adjustment
4 – Eyepiece
Instructions for use:
Before using the refractometer, it must be re-calibrated with pure water to ensure an accurate reading.
Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water is perfect for this purpose.
Calibration:
1. Lift the daylight plate and place a few drops of pure water onto the prism
2. Close the daylight plate and press it lightly so that the water spreads across the entire surface of the prism
without any air bubbles or dry spots. Allow the sample to remain on the prism for approximately 30 seconds.
3. Aim the front end of the refractometer in the direction of bright light and adjust the focus of the eye piece until
the scale can be seen clearly.
4. Adjust the calibration screw with the enclosed screwdriver until the light/dark boundary coincides with the zero line.
Please note – When performing calibration the room temperature should be approximately 20°c (68°f). If the ambient
room temperature fluctuates we recommend recalibration.

High Precision Portable
Salinity Refractometer
Regular usage:
1. Lift the daylight plate and place a few drops of your water sample onto the prism
2. Close the daylight plate and press it lightly so that the water spreads across the entire surface of the prism.
3. Aim the front end of the refractometer in the direction of bright light and adjust the focus if necessary.
4. Read the scale at the line of the light/dark boundary – this is the salinity reading.
5. After use always rinse the plate with clean water and wipe away any liquid with a soft cloth and store the
refractometer in its case.
Maintenance:
1. For maximum accuracy ensure that the solution to be measured is near to the ambient temperature of the room.
This unit is equipped with automatic temperature compensation meaning that readings within the accepted
temperature range of 10°c – 30°c (50°f - 86°f) should remain consistent.
2. Do not wash the unit in water so that water does not enter the refractometer.
3. As this refractometer is a precision optical instrument it should be handled gently during use as well as
transportation. It should be stored in its case in a dry and non corrosive atmosphere. Do not allow the optical
surfaces to become scratched.
Warranty:
We guarantee that if this refractometer is cared for as set out by the above instructions then it cannot break down
or lose any accuracy.
Furthermore we guarantee that this refractometer will be free from defects in materials or workmanship for one
year from the date of purchase. If the product is found to be faulty by us within this period we will repair or replace
it free of charge.
