Compliance informationExposure to radio frequency signalsThe BlackBerry® Smart Card Reader radio is a low powerradio transmitter and receiver. When the BlackBerry SmartCard Reader radio is turned on, it receives and also sendsout radio frequency (RF) signals. The BlackBerry Smart CardReader is designed to comply with Federal CommunicationsCommission (FCC) and Industry Canada (IC) guidelinesrespecting safety levels of RF exposure for wireless devices, which in turn are consistent with the following safetystandards previously set by Canadian, U.S., andinternational standards bodies:• ANSI/IEEE C95.1, 1999, American NationalStandards Institute/Institute of Electrical andElectronics Engineers Standard for SafetyLevels with Respect to Human Exposure to25
Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields, 3kHz to 300 GHz•National Council on Radiation Protection andMeasurements (NCRP) Report 86, 1986,Biological Effects and Exposure Criteria forRadiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields• Health Canada, Safety Code 6, 1999, Limitsof Human Exposure to RadiofrequencyElectromagnetic Fields in the FrequencyRange from 3 kHz to 300 GHz• EN 50371, 2002, Generic Standard toDemonstrate the Compliance of Low PowerElectronic and Electrical Apparatus with theBasic Restrictions Related to HumanExposure to Electromagnetic Fields (10 MHzto 300 GHz) - General Public• International Commission on Non-IonizingRadiation Protection (ICNIRP), 1998,Guidelines for Limiting Exposure to Time-26
Varying Electric, Magnetic, andElectromagnetic fields (up to 300 GHz)• Official Journal of the European Union(OJEU), 1999, Council Recommendation of 12July 1999 on the limitation of exposure of thegeneral public to electromagnetic fields (0 Hzto 300 GHz)To maintain compliance with FCC, IC, and EU RF exposureguidelines when carrying the BlackBerry Smart CardReader on your body, use only accessories that are suppliedor approved by Research In Motion (RIM). Use ofaccessories that are not expressly approved by RIM mightviolate FCC, IC, and EU RF exposure guidelines and mightvoid any warranty applicable to the BlackBerry Smart CardReader. If you do not use a body-worn accessory suppliedor approved by RIM when carrying the BlackBerry SmartCard Reader, keep the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader atleast 0.60 inches (15 mm) from your body when theBlackBerry Smart Card Reader radio is on.27
Specific absorption rate dataTHIS BLACKBERRY SMART CARD READER MEETSGOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPOSURE TORADIO WAVES.The BlackBerry® Smart Card Reader is a radio transmitterand receiver. It is designed and manufactured not to exceedthe emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF)energy set by the Federal Communications Commission(FCC) of the U.S. Government, Industry Canada of theCanadian Government (IC), and recommended by TheCouncil of the European Union. These limits are part ofcomprehensive guidelines and establish permitted levels ofRF energy for the general population. The guidelines arebased on standards that were developed by independentscientific organizations through periodic and thoroughevaluation of scientific studies. The standards include a28
substantial safety margin designed to assure the safety ofall persons, regardless of age and health. The exposure standard for the BlackBerry Smart CardReader employs a unit of measurement known as theSpecific Absorption Rate, or SAR. The SAR limit set by theFCC/IC is 1.6W/kg*. The SAR limit recommended by TheCouncil of the European Union is 2.0W/kg**.Tests for SAR are exempted due to the low transmit powerof the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader. As per FCC 2003 TCBTraining, no SAR evaluation is needed if the transmit powerof a transceiver is below the low threshold of 60 / f (GHz)mW.___________________________________* In the United States and Canada, the SAR limit for mobiledevices used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/kg) averagedover 1 gram of tissue for the body or head (4.0 W/kgaveraged over 10 grams of tissue for the extremities - hands, wrists, ankles and feet).29
** In Europe, the SAR limit for mobile devices used by thepublic is 2.0 watts/kg (W/kg) averaged over 10 grams oftissue for the body or head (4.0 W/kg averaged over 10grams of tissue for the extremities - hands, wrists, anklesand feet). Studies suggest that the standard incorporates asubstantial margin of safety to give additional protectionfor the public and to account for any variations inmeasurements. The long-term characteristics or the possible physiologicaleffects of Radio Frequency Electromagnetic fields have notbeen evaluated by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL).FCC compliance statement (UnitedStates)FCC Class B Part 15This device complies with Part 15 of the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC) Rules. • This device may not cause harmfulinterference.• This device must accept any interferencereceived, including interference that maycause undesired operation.CAUTION: Changes or modifications to this unit notexpressly approved by the party responsible forcompliance could void the user’s authority to operatethis equipment. This equipment has been tested and found to comply withthe limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 ofthe FCC Rules. These limits are designed to providereasonable protection against harmful interference in aresidential installation. This equipment generates, uses andcan radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed andused in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, may cause interference harmful to radio communications. There is no guarantee, however, that interference will notoccur in a particular installation. If this equipment does31
cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off andon, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interferenceby one or more of the following measures:• Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.• Increase the separation between theequipment and receiver.• Connect the equipment to an outlet on acircuit different from that to which thereceiver is connected.•Consult the dealer or an experienced radio orTV technician for help.Industry Canada certificationThis BlackBerry® Smart Card Reader complies with IndustryCanada RSS102 and RSS210 standards, under certificationnumber 2503A-RBX10BW.32
