For more information about carrying your BlackBerry device, see theholster information in the "Additional safety guidelines" section of this document.• Reduce the amount of time spent on calls.Specific absorption rate dataTHIS WIRELESS DEVICE MODEL MEETS GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPOSURE TORADIO WAVES WHEN USED AS DIRECTED IN THIS SECTION.The BlackBerry® device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured notto exceed the emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by the FederalCommunications Commission (FCC) of the U.S. Government, Industry Canada of the CanadianGovernment (IC), and recommended by The Council of the European Union when used asdirected in the previous section. These limits are part of comprehensive guidelines and establishpermitted levels of RF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based on standardsthat were developed by independent scientific organizations through periodic and thoroughevaluation of scientific studies. The exposure standard for wireless devices employs a unit of measurement known as the SpecificAbsorption Rate, or SAR. The SAR limit set by the FCC/IC is 1.6W/kg*. The SAR limitrecommended by The Council of the European Union is 2.0W/kg**. Tests for SAR are conducted21
using standard operating positions specified by the FCC/IC with the device transmitting at itshighest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined atthe highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the device while operating can be wellbelow the maximum value. This is because the device is designed to operate at multiple powerlevels so as to use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the closer you areto a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output. Before a wireless device model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certifiedto the FCC, IC, and The Council of the European Union that it does not exceed the limitestablished by the government-adopted requirement for safe exposure under therecommendations of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection(ICNIRP). The tests are performed in positions and locations (for example, at the ear and wornon the body) as required by the FCC, IC, and The Council of the European Union for each model. The highest SAR value for each device model when tested for use at the ear is outlined below:Device SAR (W/kg) for 1g SAR (W/kg) for 10gBlackBerry® Storm™ 9500 smartphone 0.57 0.47BlackBerry® Storm™ 9520 smartphone 0.97 1.02 BlackBerry® Storm™ 9530 smartphone 0.93 0.67BlackBerry® Storm™ 9550 smartphone 1.01 0.92The highest reported SAR value for this BlackBerry device when clipped on a belt, in a ResearchIn Motion approved holster equipped with an integrated belt clip, is outlined below. Carryingsolutions, including RIM approved carrying solutions and carrying solutions not approved byRIM, that do not come equipped with an integrated belt clip SHOULD NOT be worn or carried22
on the body. For more information regarding the wearing or carrying of this BlackBerry devicewithout using a RIM approved carrying solution equipped with an integrated belt clip, see theholster information in the "Additional safety guidelines" section of this document.Device SAR (W/kg) for 1g SAR (W/kg) for 10gBlackBerry Storm 9500 smartphone 0.50 0.27BlackBerry Storm 9520 smartphone 0.60 0.53BlackBerry Storm 9530 smartphone 0.56 0.38BlackBerry Storm 9550 smartphone 0.63 0.45Body-worn measurements differ among wireless device and phone models, depending uponavailable accessories and FCC, IC, and The Council of the European Union requirements. The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization for this wireless device model with all reportedSAR levels evaluated as in compliance with the FCC RF emission guidelines when theBlackBerry device is used as directed in this section. Some hearing devices aremore immune than others to this interference, and wireless devices also vary in the amount ofinterference that they generate. The wireless telephone industry has developed ratings to assist hearing device users in findingwireless devices that may be compatible with their hearing devices. Not all wireless deviceshave been rated. Wireless devices that are rated will have the rating displayed on the boxtogether with other relevant approval markings. The ratings are not guarantees. Results will vary depending on the user's hearing device andhearing loss. If your hearing device is vulnerable to interference, you may not be able to use arated wireless device successfully.Consulting with your hearing health professional and testing the wireless device with yourhearing device is the best way to evaluate it for your personal needs. This BlackBerry® device has been tested and rated for use with hearing aids for some of thewireless technologies that the BlackBerry device uses. However, other wireless technologiesmay be used in this BlackBerry device that have not been tested for use with hearing aids. It is26
important to try the different features of your BlackBerry device thoroughly and in differentlocations to determine if you hear any interfering noise when using this BlackBerry device withyour hearing aid or cochlear implant. Consult your wireless service provider about its return andexchange policies and for information about hearing aid compatibility. How the ratings workM-Ratings: Wireless devices rated M3 or M4 meet FCC requirements and are likely to generateless interference to hearing devices than wireless devices that are not labeled. M4 is the betteror higher of the two ratings.T-Ratings: Wireless devices rated T3 or T4 meet FCC requirements and are likely to be moreusable with a hearing device's telecoil ("T Switch" or "Telephone Switch") than unrated wirelessdevices. T4 is the better or higher of the two ratings. (Note that not all hearing devices havetelecoils in them.)Hearing devices may also be measured for immunity to this type of interference.
