Compliance informationExposure to radio frequency signalsThe BlackBerry® device radio is a low power radio transmitter and receiver. When the BlackBerry device radiois turned on, it receives and also sends out radio frequency (RF) signals. The BlackBerry device is designed tocomply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Industry Canada (IC), Ministry of Internal Affairs andCommunications (MIC), and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) guidelines respecting safetylevels of RF exposure for wireless devices, which in turn are consistent with the following safety standardspreviously set by Canadian, U.S., and international standards bodies:• ANSI®/IEEE® C95.1, 1999, American National Standards Institute/Institute of Electrical and ElectronicsEngineers Standard for Safety Levels with Respect to Human Exposure to Radio FrequencyElectromagnetic Fields, 3 kHz to 300 GHz•National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) Report 86, 1986, Biological Effectsand Exposure Criteria for Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields• Health Canada, Safety Code 6, 1999, Limits of Human Exposure to Radiofrequency ElectromagneticFields in the Frequency Range from 3 kHz to 300 GHz• EN 50360, 2001, Product standard to demonstrate the compliance of mobile phones with the basicrestrictions related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields (300 MHz to 3 GHz)•International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), 1998, Guidelines for LimitingExposure to Time-Varying Electric, Magnetic, and Electromagnetic fields (up to 300 GHz)• Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), 1999, Council Recommendation of 12 July 1999 on thelimitation of exposure of the general public to electromagnetic fields (0 Hz to 300 GHz)• MIC, 2001, Article 14-2 of the Ordinance for Regulating Radio Equipment• GB 21288-2007, Limits for human local exposure to electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile phonesTo maintain compliance with FCC, IC, MIC, MIIT, and EU RF exposure guidelines when you carry theBlackBerry device on your body, use only accessories equipped with an integrated belt clip that are supplied orapproved by Research In Motion. Use of accessories that are not expressly approved by RIM might violate FCC,17
IC, MIC, MIIT, and EU RF exposure guidelines and might void any warranty applicable to the BlackBerry device. If you do not use a body-worn accessory equipped with an integrated belt clip supplied or approved by RIM whenyou carry the BlackBerry device, keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 in. (25 mm) from your body when theBlackBerry device is transmitting. When using any data feature of the BlackBerry device, with or without a USBcable, hold the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 in. (25 mm) from your body. If you use a body-worn accessorynot supplied by RIM when you carry the BlackBerry device, verify that the accessory does not contain metal andkeep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 in. (25 mm) from your body when the BlackBerry device is transmitting. To reduce RF exposure consider these safety guidelines:• Use the BlackBerry device in areas where there is a strong wireless signal. The indicator that providesinformation about the strength of the wireless signal is located in the upper-right corner of the Homescreen and displays five ascending bars. Three or more bars indicate a strong signal. A reduced signaldisplay, which might occur in areas such as an underground parking structure or if you are traveling bytrain or car, might indicate increased power output from your BlackBerry device as it attempts to connectto a weak signal.•Use hands-free operation if it is available and keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 in. (25 mm) fromyour body (including the abdomen of pregnant women and the lower abdomen of teenagers) when theBlackBerry device is turned on and connected to the wireless network. For more information aboutcarrying your BlackBerry device, see the holster information in the "Additional safety guidelines" sectionof this document.• Reduce the amount of time spent on calls.Specific absorption rate dataTHIS WIRELESS DEVICE MODEL MEETS GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVESWHEN USED AS DIRECTED IN THIS SECTION.The BlackBerry® device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured not to exceed theemission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission(FCC) of the U.S. Government, Industry Canada of the Canadian Government (IC), Ministry of Industry andInformation Technology (MIIT) of the People's Republic of China Government, and recommended by The Council18
of the European Union when used as directed in the previous section. These limits are part of comprehensiveguidelines and establish permitted levels of RF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based onstandards that were developed by independent scientific organizations through periodic and thoroughevaluation of scientific studies. The exposure standard for wireless devices employs a unit of measurement known as the Specific AbsorptionRate, or SAR. The SAR limit set by the FCC and IC is 1.6W/kg*. The SAR limit set by the MIIT is 2.0W/kg. The SARlimit recommended by The Council of the European Union is 2.0W/kg**. Tests for SAR are conducted usingstandard operating positions specified by the FCC, IC and MIIT with the device transmitting at its highest certifiedpower level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at the highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the device while operating can be well below the maximum value. This is because thedevice is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only the power required to reach the network. In general, the closer you are to a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output. Before a wireless device model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified to the FCC, IC,MIIT, and The Council of the European Union that it does not exceed the limit established by the government-adopted requirement for safe exposure under the recommendations of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The tests are performed in positions and locations (for example, at theear and worn on the body) as required by the FCC, IC, MIIT, and The Council of the European Union for eachmodel. The highest SAR value for each device model when tested for use at the ear is outlined below:Device SAR (W/kg) for 1g SAR (W/kg) for 10gBlackBerry® Curve™ 8910 smartphone 0.92 0.88The highest reported SAR value for this BlackBerry device when clipped on a belt, in a Research In Motionapproved holster equipped with an integrated belt clip, is outlined below. Carrying solutions, including RIMapproved carrying solutions and carrying solutions not approved by RIM, that do not come equipped with an19
integrated belt clip SHOULD NOT be worn or carried on the body. For more information regarding the wearingor carrying of this BlackBerry device without using a RIM approved carrying solution equipped with an integratedbelt clip, see the holster information in the "Additional safety guidelines" section of this document.Device SAR (W/kg) for 1g SAR (W/kg) for 10gBlackBerry Curve 8910 smartphone 0.65 0.44Body-worn measurements differ among wireless device and phone models, depending upon available accessoriesand FCC, IC, MIIT, and The Council of the European Union requirements. The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization for this wireless device model with all reported SAR levelsevaluated as in compliance with the FCC RF emission guidelines when the BlackBerry device is used as directedin this section. SAR information on this wireless device model is on file with the FCC and can be found under theDisplay Grant section of www.fcc.gov/oet/ea after searching for the FCC ID for your device listed below.Additional information on SAR can be found on the CTIA - The Wireless Association® web site at www.ctia.org.In Japan, additional information on SAR can be found on the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses(ARIB) web site at www.arib-emf.org/index.html, or on the Telecommunications Bureau of the Ministry of InternalAffairs and Communications (MIC) web site at www.tele.soumu.go.jp/e/index.htm.Device FCC IDBlackBerry Curve 8910 smartphone L6ARCT40GW___________________________________* In the United States and Canada, the SAR limit for mobile devices used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/kg)averaged over 1 gram of tissue for the body or head (4.0 W/kg averaged over 10 grams of tissue for the extremities- hands, wrists, ankles and feet).20
** In Europe, the SAR limit for mobile devices used by the public is 2.0 watts/kg (W/kg) averaged over 10 gramsof tissue for the body or head (4.0 W/kg averaged over 10 grams of tissue for the extremities - hands, wrists, ankles and feet). Studies suggest that the standard incorporates a substantial margin of safety to give additionalprotection for the public and to account for any variations in measurements. The long-term characteristics or the possible physiological effects of Radio Frequency Electromagnetic fieldshave not been evaluated by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Some hearing devices are more immune than others to thisinterference, and wireless devices also vary in the amount of interference that they generate. The wireless telephone industry has developed ratings to assist hearing device users in finding wireless devicesthat may be compatible with their hearing devices. Not all wireless devices have been rated. Wireless devicesthat are rated will have the rating displayed on the box together with other relevant approval markings. The ratings are not guarantees. Results will vary depending on the user's hearing device and hearing loss. If yourhearing device is vulnerable to interference, you may not be able to use a rated wireless device successfully.Consulting with your hearing health professional and testing the wireless device with your hearing device is thebest way to evaluate it for your personal needs. How the ratings workM-Ratings: Wireless devices rated M3 or M4 meet FCC requirements and are likely to generate less interferenceto hearing devices than wireless devices that are not labeled. M4 is the better or higher of the two ratings.22
T-Ratings: Wireless devices rated T3 or T4 meet FCC requirements and are likely to be more usable with a hearingdevice's telecoil ("T Switch" or "Telephone Switch") than unrated wireless devices.
