Important safety precautionsPlease read the safety and operation instructions before using your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet or any accessories thatcame with it. Retain these instructions for future use.In some countries there may be restrictions on using Bluetooth® enabled and wireless devices with encryption software.Check with your local authorities.Before you use your tablet, it is important that you read the compliance information and theguidelines for safe use that are found in this guide. To find the latest safety and productinformation, visit docs.blackberry.com/tablet.Use only chargers approved by Research In Motion. Use of chargers that have not been approved byRIM might present a risk of fire or explosion, which could cause serious injury, death, and propertyloss.Do not disassemble your tablet. Your tablet contains small parts that might be a choking hazard.Most modern electronic equipment is shielded from radio frequency (RF) signals. However, certainelectronic equipment might not be shielded against the RF signals from your tablet.Keep your tablet away from medical devices, including pacemakers and hearing aids, as they mightmalfunction causing serious injury or death to you and others.•Always keep your tablet more than 7.88 inches (20 cm) from the pacemaker when thetablet is turned on.• If you have any reason to suspect that interference with the pacemaker is taking place, turnoff all wireless connections on your tablet immediately.Turn off all wireless connections on your tablet in health care facilities when any regulations postedin these areas instruct you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment thatcould be sensitive to external RF energy.Do not use your tablet or accessories near water (for example, near a bathtub or a sink, in a wetbasement, or near a swimming pool) or spill liquid of any kind on your tablet or accessories as thismight cause a short circuit, a fire, or an electric shock which could cause serious injury, death, andproperty loss.Exposure to flashing lights on your tablet can cause epileptic seizures or blackouts. If you or otherusers are susceptible to epileptic seizures or blackouts, consult your physician before you use yourtablet. If you or others experience any disorientation, loss of awareness, twitching, convulsions, orany involuntary movements, stop using your tablet immediately and consult a physician. The LEDnotification light is located on the front of your tablet, next to the camera.3
Avoid using your tablet outdoors in direct sunlight as this might cause your tablet to overheat, whichcould present a burn or fire risk, and damage your tablet. Use of the tablet in direct sunlight couldalso reflect sun into your eyes and onto your skin causing eye damage and sunburn.Do not install your tablet in your vehicle or use it while driving. Using your tablet while driving couldput you and others at greater risk of an accident causing serious injury, death, and property loss.You are responsible for knowing and obeying the laws and regulations regarding the use of wirelessdevices in the areas where you drive.Store your tablet safely before driving your vehicle. Do not use a charging accessory as a means ofstoring your tablet while you are in a vehicle. If your vehicle is equipped with an air bag, do notplace your tablet or other objects above the air bag, or in the air bag deployment area. Improperstorage of your tablet or accessories in your vehicle may result in serious injury, death, and propertyloss.Do not use your tablet in the presence of gas fumes as it presents a risk of fire or explosion.Areas with gas fumes can include fueling areas such as gasoline or petrol stations; below deck onboats; fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities; vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (such aspropane or butane); and any other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicleengine.Do not use or store your tablet in temperatures exceeding 104° F (40°C) as your tablet mightoverheat and may present a burn and fire risk and cease to function.Do not dispose of your tablet in a fire as this might cause an explosion resulting in serious injury,death, and property loss.Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulationsprohibit using the radio of wireless devices while in the air. Turn off all wireless connections on yourtablet before boarding an aircraft. Using your tablet on an aircraft might affect aircraftinstrumentation, communication, and performance; might disrupt the network; might otherwise bedangerous to the operation of the aircraft, its crew, and its passengers; and might be illegal.With all wireless connections on your tablet turned off, use only non-radio based applications inaccordance with airline regulations for electronic devices.Your tablet is not inherently safe and cannot be used in the presence of explosive fumes, explosivedust, or other explosive chemicals. Turn off all wireless connections on your tablet when in any areawith a potentially explosive atmosphere, and obey all signs and instructions. Sparks in such areascould cause an explosion or fire resulting in serious injury, death, and property loss.Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, clearly marked. Theyinclude fueling areas such as gasoline or petrol stations; below deck on boats; fuel or chemicaltransfer or storage facilities; vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas (such as propane or butane);areas where the air contains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders; and anyother area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.4
To avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn off all wireless connections on your tablet when ina “blasting area” or in areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio.” Obey all signs and instructions.Certain jurisdictions might prohibit or restrict your use of certain features on your tablet. If you usethe camera on your tablet, the following statements are applicable to you:When taking, processing, or using pictures, obey all laws, regulations, procedures, and policies,including, without limitation, any copyright, personal privacy, trade secret, or security laws whichmight govern or restrict you while using your tablet. Honor the personal rights of others. Copyrightprotections might prevent you from copying, modifying, transferring, or forwarding some pictures,music (including ring tones), or other content. Do not aim the camera directly at the sun or anyother bright light. This action could cause serious damage to your eyes and damage your tablet.When listening to audio files using headphones, permanent hearing loss might occur if headphonesare used at a high volume. Avoid increasing the volume of your headphones to block out noisysurroundings. If you experience ringing in your ears or muffled speech, consult a physician to haveyour hearing checked.Safe use guidelines•Do not place heavy objects on your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet.• Do not attempt to modify or service your tablet.• Do not attempt to cover or push objects into openings on your tablet unless instructed to do so in thedocumentation for your tablet supplied by Research In Motion.• Do not use sharp objects on the screen.• Do not use excessive force on the screen.Approved accessory charging models• ASY-34724-001• ASY-34725-001• ASY-34726-001• ASY-34727-001Use the charging accessories provided with your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet, or other charging accessories approvedby Research In Motion, from only the type of power source that is indicated on the marking label. Before you use anypower supply, verify that the mains voltage is in accordance with the voltage printed on the power supply. Connect yourtablet only to products that bear the USB-IF logo or have completed the USB-IF compliance program.5
Do not overload power outlets, extension cords, or convenience receptacles as this might result in a risk of fire or electricshock. To reduce the risk of damage to the cord or the plug, pull the plug rather than the cord when you disconnect thecharging accessory from the power outlet or convenience receptacle.Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the pointwhere the power cord connects to your tablet. Unplug charging accessories during lightning storms or when unused forlong periods of time.Do not use charging accessories outside or in any area exposed to the elements.To buy accessories for your tablet, visit www.shopblackberry.com.Electrical safetyCharge your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet using only the charging accessories provided by or specifically approved byResearch In Motion for use with this tablet. Any approval from RIM under this document must be in writing and must befrom a person authorized to provide such approval. Use of any other accessory might invalidate any warranty provided withyour tablet and might be dangerous.Battery safety and disposalIn an effort to help the environment, please visit www.blackberry.com/recycling for information about returningyour BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet to Research In Motion for recycling and safe disposal. Please also recyclethe packaging in accordance with your local regulations.Your tablet contains a non-removable lithium-based battery. Do not dispose of your tablet and its battery inhousehold waste bins or in a fire. There is a risk of explosion or chemical burn if the battery is mistreated. Do not attemptto remove the battery or allow children to remove or handle the battery directly. Do not disassemble, crush, or puncturethe battery. Do not heat the battery above 140°F (60°C). Do not allow metal objects to contact the battery terminals. RIMspecifies batteries for use in devices in compliance with IEEE® Std 1725™-200x.Please check your local regulations for information about the disposal of electronic products in your area. If you are unableto return your tablet to RIM as outlined at www.blackberry.com/recycling, be sure to dispose of your tablet and its batteryin accordance with the laws and regulations in your area governing disposal of such cell types.Antenna careUse only the supplied integrated antenna. Unauthorized antenna modifications or attachments could damage yourBlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet and might violate U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.6
AccessoriesUse only those accessories approved by Research In Motion. Using any accessories not approved by RIM for use with thistablet model might invalidate any approval or warranty applicable to the tablet, might result in the non-operation of thetablet, and might be dangerous.Operating and storage temperaturesSituate your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet or accessories away from heat sources, such as radiators, heat registers,stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat. Avoid using your tablet in direct sunlight.If you are not going to use your tablet for more than two weeks, turn off the tablet power and follow the operating andstorage temperatures listed in the following table:Tablet operating 32 to 104°F (0 to 40°C)Tablet storage 14 to 104°F (-10 to 40°C)Charger operating 32 to 104°F (0 to 40°C)Charger storage -22 to 167°F (-30 to 75°C)Interference with electronic equipmentCo-channel mobile satellite systems: To reduce the potential for harmful interference with co-channel mobile satellitesystems, your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet operates in the 5150 to 5250 MHz band only when associated with awireless access point indoors.CAUTION: High-power radar systems are allocated as primary users (meaning they have priority) of the 5250 to 5350 MHzand 5650 to 5850 MHz bands. These radar systems might cause interference with or damage to your tablet.Additional safety guidelinesStability: Do not place your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet or accessories on any unstable surface. They could fall andthereby potentially cause serious injury and damage to property including your tablet. Take care when using your tabletwith any charging accessories to route the power cord in a way that reduces the risk of injury to others, such as by trippingor choking.Cleaning: Do not use liquid, aerosol cleaners, or solvents on or near your tablet or accessories. Clean only with a soft drycloth. Disconnect any cables and unplug any charging accessories from the electrical outlet before cleaning either yourtablet or the charging accessory.7
Repetitive strain: When using your tablet, take frequent breaks. If you experience any discomfort in your neck, shoulders,arms, wrists, hands (including thumbs and fingers), or other parts of the body when using your tablet, cease useimmediately. If discomfort persists, consult a physician.ServiceOnly qualified service personnel should perform repairs to this tablet. Disconnect the power supply cables from theelectrical outlet and refer the tablet or charging accessory for service to qualified service personnel if any of the followingsituations occur:•The power supply cord, plug, or connector is damaged;• Liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the opening on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet or chargingaccessory; and• Your tablet or charging accessory has been exposed to rain or water; becomes very hot to the touch; has beendropped or damaged in any way; does not operate normally by following the instructions in the userdocumentation; exhibits a distinct change in performance.To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, adjust only those controls that are covered in the documentation for your tabletsupplied by Research In Motion. An improper adjustment of other controls might cause damage and may require extensivework by a qualified technician to restore your tablet, charging accessory, or any other accessory to normal operation.Failure to observe all safety instructions contained in the documentation for your tablet supplied by RIM will void theLimited Warranty and might lead to suspension or denial of services to the offender, legal action, or both.8

Some airtime service providers might not offerInternet browsing functionality with a subscription to the BlackBerry® Internet Service. Check with your service providerfor availability, roaming arrangements, service plans and features. Installation or use of Third Party Products and Serviceswith RIM's products and services may require one or more patent, trademark, copyright, or other licenses in order to avoidinfringement or violation of third party rights. You are solely responsible for determining whether to use Third PartyProducts and Services and if any third party licenses are required to do so. If required you are responsible for acquiringthem. You should not install or use Third Party Products and Services until all necessary licenses have been acquired. AnyThird Party Products and Services that are provided with RIM's products and services are provided as a convenience to youand are provided "AS IS" with no express or implied conditions, endorsements, guarantees, representations, or warrantiesof any kind by RIM and RIM assumes no liability whatsoever, in relation thereto. Your use of Third Party Products andServices shall be governed by and subject to you agreeing to the terms of separate licenses and other agreementsapplicable thereto with third parties, except to the extent expressly covered by a license or other agreement with RIM.14
