Serious andpermanent hearing damage could occur.Exposure to flashing lights on your BlackBerry device cancause epileptic seizures or blackouts and might bedangerous to you or others. In the event that youexperience, or your use of your BlackBerry device causes inothers, any disorientation, loss of awareness, twitching,convulsions, or any involuntary movements, stop using yourBlackBerry device immediately and consult a physician. TheLED notification light is located on the front of yourBlackBerry device, in the upper-right corner. If yourBlackBerry device model has a camera, the camera flash LED5

aperture is located on the back of your BlackBerry device,either above or to the right of the camera lens. If you aresusceptible to epileptic seizures or blackouts, consult yourphysician before you use your BlackBerry device.Do not use your BlackBerry device while driving unless youare permitted by law to use the BlackBerry device in hands-free mode. Using your BlackBerry device while driving couldput you and others at greater risk of an accident causingserious injury, death, or property loss.Do not use your BlackBerry device in the presence of gasfumes because it might present a risk of fire or explosion.Do not dispose of your BlackBerry device in a fire becausethis might cause an explosion resulting in serious injury,death, or property loss.Turn off your BlackBerry device on aircrafts. Using yourBlackBerry device on an aircraft might affect aircraftinstrumentation, communication, and performance; mightdisrupt the network; might otherwise be dangerous to theoperation of the aircraft, its crew, and its passengers; andmight be illegal.BlackBerry device are not intrinsically safe and cannot beused in the presence of explosive fumes, explosive dust, orother explosive chemicals. Sparks in such areas could causean explosion or fire resulting in serious injury, death, ordamage to property.6

Using your device safely• Do not place heavy objects on your BlackBerry® device.• Do not attempt to modify or service your BlackBerry device.• Do not attempt to cover or push objects into openings on yourBlackBerry device unless instructed to do so in the BlackBerrydevice documentation supplied by Research In Motion. Thisaction might cause a short circuit, a fire, or an electric shock.• Do not use sharp objects on the screen.• Do not use excessive force on the screen.• Do not use your BlackBerry device or BlackBerrydeviceaccessories near water (for example, near a bathtub or a sink, in awet basement, or near a swimming pool).• Do not place your BlackBerry device or BlackBerrydeviceaccessories on any unstable surface. The BlackBerry device orBlackBerrydevice accessories could fall, thereby potentiallycausing serious injury to a person and serious damage to theBlackBerry device or BlackBerrydevice accessory.• When using your BlackBerry device, take frequent breaks. If youexperience any discomfort in your neck, shoulders, arms, wrists,hands (including thumbs and fingers), or other parts of the bodywhen using your BlackBerry device, cease use immediately. Ifdiscomfort persists, consult a physician.7

Caution: Use of controls or adjustments or performance of proceduresother than those specified herein might result in hazardous radiationexposure.Electrical safetyCharge the BlackBerry® device using only the charging accessories providedby or specifically approved by Research In Motion for use with thisBlackBerry device. When you useyour BlackBerry device with any charging accessories, ensure that you routethe power cord in a way that reduces the risk of injury to others, such astripping or choking. Do not use charging accessories outside or in any areaexposed to the elements.For more information about inserting the battery and connecting the powersupply, see the documentation that came with your BlackBerry device.To buy accessories for your BlackBerry device, contact your wireless serviceprovider or visit www.shopblackberry.com.Battery safetyYour BlackBerry® device contains a removable lithium-ion battery.The battery might present a fire or chemical burn hazard if mistreated. Donot disassemble, crush, or puncture the battery. If the battery has beendisassembled, crushed, or punctured, cease use of the battery immediately.Do not heat the battery above 140°F (60°C). Heating the battery above140°F (60°C) could cause the battery to catch fire or explode. Do not allowmetal objects to contact the battery terminals.Use only the battery that Research In Motion specifies for use with yourparticular BlackBerry device model. RIM specifies batteries for use inBlackBerry devices in compliance with IEEE® Std 1725™-200x. Using anyother battery might invalidate any warranty provided with the BlackBerrydevice and might present a risk of fire or explosion.Children should not handle batteries unless they are supervised by an adult.10

When this icon appears on your BlackBerry device, thebattery is not inserted correctly or an invalid battery isinserted. If you inserted the battery that is specified for usewith your particular BlackBerry device model, remove and reinsert thebattery. If you inserted an invalid battery, remove it immediately and insertthe battery that RIM specifies for use with your particular BlackBerry devicemodel. Verify that the battery connectors align with the connectors on yourBlackBerry device.Driving and walking safelyGive your full attention to driving; driving safely is your first responsibility.You are responsible for knowing and obeying the laws and regulationsregarding the use of wireless devices in the areas where you drive.Research In Motion recommends that you do not use your BlackBerry®device while you drive. Instead, consider having a passenger in the vehicleuse your BlackBerry device for you, or find a safe location to stop yourvehicle before you use your BlackBerry device.Store your BlackBerry device safely before driving your vehicle. Do not useany charging accessory as a means of storing your BlackBerry device whileyou are in a vehicle. If your vehicle is equipped with an air bag, do not placeyour BlackBerry device or other objects above the air bag, or in the air bagdeployment area. If in-vehicle wireless equipment is improperly stored orinstalled and the air bag inflates, serious injury could result.11

Radio frequency signals might affect improperly installed or inadequatelyshielded electronic systems in motor vehicles. Check with the manufactureror its representative regarding your vehicle. If any equipment has beenadded to your vehicle, you should also consult the manufacturer of thatequipment for information on radio frequency signals.Do not use your BlackBerry device while walking or engaging in any activitythat requires your full attention. Inattention to vehicular traffic or otherpedestrian hazards could result in serious injury, death, or property loss.AccessoriesUse only those accessories approved by Research In Motion. Using anyaccessories not approved by RIM for use with this particular BlackBerry®device model might invalidate any approval or warranty applicable to theBlackBerry device, might result in the BlackBerry device becominginoperative, and might be dangerous.Carrying solutions: Your BlackBerry device might not come with a holster(body-worn accessory). If you wear your BlackBerry device on your body,always put your BlackBerry device in a BlackBerry device holster equippedwith an integrated belt clip supplied or approved by Research In Motion. Ifyou do not use a holster equipped with an integrated belt clip supplied orapproved by RIM when you carry your BlackBerry device, keep yourBlackBerry device at least 0.59 in. (15 mm) from your body when theBlackBerry device is transmitting. When using any data feature of yourBlackBerry device (for example, email messages, PIN messages, MMSmessages, or browser service), with or without a USB cable, hold yourBlackBerry device at least 0.59 in. (15 mm) from your body. Using12

accessories that are not supplied by or approved by RIM might cause yourBlackBerry device to exceed radio frequency exposure guidelines. For moreinformation about radio frequency exposure, see the "Complianceinformation" section of this guide.Most BlackBerry carrying solutions for BlackBerry devices (for example,holsters, totes, and pouches) incorporate a magnet into the physicalstructure of the carrying solution. Do not place items containing magneticstrip components, such as debit cards, credit cards, hotel key cards, phonecards, or similar items, near BlackBerry carrying solutions that incorporate amagnet into the physical structure of the carrying solution. The magnetmight damage or erase the data stored on the magnetic strip.MediaCertain jurisdictions might prohibit or restrict your use of certain featureson your BlackBerry® device. When taking, processing, or using pictures,obey all laws, regulations, procedures, and policies, including, withoutlimitation, any copyright, personal privacy, trade secret, or security lawswhich might govern or restrict you while using your BlackBerry device.Honor the personal rights of others. Copyright protections might preventyou from copying, modifying, transferring, or forwarding some pictures,music (including ring tones), or other content.Audio files: Permanent hearing loss might occur if you listen to audio filesat high volumes, particuarly with headphones. Avoid increasing the volumeof your headphones to block out noisy surroundings. If you experienceringing in your ears or muffled speech, consult a physician to have yourhearing checked.13

Camera: If your BlackBerry device has a camera, do not aim the cameradirectly at the sun or any other bright light. This action could cause seriousdamage to your eyes or damage your BlackBerry device. When using thecamera flash, keep the camera flash LED aperture at least 19.69 in. (50 cm)from the subject's eyes.AntennaUse only the supplied integrated antenna. Unauthorized antennamodifications or attachments could damage the BlackBerry® device andmight violate U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.Interference with electronic equipmentMost modern electronic equipment is shielded from radio frequencysignals. However, certain electronic equipment might not be shieldedagainst the radio frequency signals from your BlackBerry® device.Pacemakers: Consult a physician or the manufacturer of your pacemaker ifyou have any questions regarding the effect of radio frequency signals onyour pacemaker. Verify that you are using your BlackBerry device inaccordance with the safety requirements associated with your particularpacemaker, which might include the following requirements:• Always keep your BlackBerry device more than 7.88 in. (20 cm)from the pacemaker when the BlackBerry device is turned on.• Do not carry your BlackBerry device in your breast pocket.14

• When using the phone on your BlackBerry device, use the earopposite the pacemaker for making and receiving calls tominimize the potential interference.• If you have any reason to suspect that interference is takingplace, turn off all wireless connections on your BlackBerry deviceimmediately. Stop using your BlackBerry device and consult aphysician.Hearing aids: Some digital wireless devices might interfere with somehearing aids. In the event of such interference, consult your wireless serviceprovider or contact the manufacturer of your hearing aid to discussalternatives.Other medical devices: If you use any other personal medical device,consult the manufacturer of your device to determine if the device isadequately shielded from external radio frequency energy. Your physicianmight be able to assist you in obtaining this information.Health care facilities: Turn off all wireless connections on your BlackBerrydevice in health care facilities when any regulations posted in these areasinstruct you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities might be usingequipment that could be sensitive to external radio frequency energy.Aircraft: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and FederalCommunications Commission (FCC) regulations prohibit using the radio ofwireless devices while in the air. Turn off all wireless connections on yourBlackBerry device before boarding an aircraft. The effect of using theBlackBerry device with wireless connections turned on in an aircraft isunknown. Using your BlackBerry device on an aircraft might affect aircraftinstrumentation, communication, and performance; might disrupt the15

network; might otherwise be dangerous to the operation of the aircraft;and might be illegal. With all wireless connections on your BlackBerrydevice turned off, use only nonradio-based device applications inaccordance with airline regulations for electronic devices.Dangerous areasYour BlackBerry® device is not an intrinsically safe device and is not suitablefor use in hazardous environments, where intrinsically safe devices arerequired, including without limitation, in presence of gas fumes, explosivedust situations, operation of nuclear facilities, aircraft navigation orcommunication services, air traffic control, and life support or weaponssystems.Potentially explosive atmospheres: If you are in any area with a potentiallyexplosive atmosphere, turn off all wireless connections on your BlackBerrydevice and obey all signs and instructions. Sparks in such areas could causean explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury or even death.Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always,clearly marked. They include fueling areas such as gasoline or petrolstations; below deck on boats; fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities;vehicles using liquefied petroleum gas, such as propane or butane; areaswhere the air contains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust, or metalpowders; and any other area where you would normally be advised to turnoff your vehicle engine.Do not use the phone on your BlackBerry device to report a gas leak in thevicinity of the leak. Leave the area and, if the phone is available and activeon your BlackBerry device, make the call from a safe location.16

Blasting areas: When in a "blasting area" or an area that indicates that two-way radios should be turned off, to avoid interfering with blastingoperations, turn off all wireless connections on your BlackBerry device andobey all signs and instructions.Operating and storage temperaturesDo not use your BlackBerry® device in surrounding temperatures thatexceed 95°F (35°C). Use above this surrounding temperature could causeyour BlackBerry device to become hot, which could result in serious injury,death, or damage to property. Do not store your BlackBerry device insurrounding temperatures that exceed 86°F (30°C).Keep your BlackBerry device or BlackBerry device accessories away fromheat sources, such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus(including amplifiers) that produce heat. If you are not going to use yourBlackBerry device for more than two weeks, turn off the BlackBerry devicepower and remove the battery. Follow the operating and storagetemperatures listed in the following table:Device operating 32 to 95°F (0 to 35°C)Device storage 50 to 86°F (10 to 30°C)Travel charger operating 32 to 95°F (0 to 35°C)Travel charger storage -22 to 167°F (-30 to 75°C)17

Device cleaning and repairCleaning: Do not use liquid, aerosol cleaners, or solvents on or near yourBlackBerry® device or BlackBerry device accessories. Clean only with a softdry cloth. Disconnect any cables from the computer and unplug anycharging accessories from the electrical outlet before cleaning either yourBlackBerry device or the charging accessory.If it is necessary to clean the battery cover on your BlackBerry device,remove the battery cover carefully and keep your BlackBerry device awayfrom all liquids. Clean the battery cover with a soft cloth that is dampenedwith water and mild liquid detergent. Verify that the battery cover iscompletely dry before you put it back on your BlackBerry device.Repair: Do not attempt to disassemble your BlackBerry device or anycharging accessory. Only qualified service personnel should perform repairsto your BlackBerry device. If any of the following situations occur,disconnect the power supply cables from the computer or electrical outletand refer your BlackBerry device or charging accessory for service toqualified service personnel:• the power supply cord, plug, or connector is damaged• liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the BlackBerrydevice or charging accessory• the BlackBerry device or charging accessory has been exposed torain or water• the BlackBerry device or charging accessory becomes very hot tothe touch18

• the BlackBerry device or charging accessory has been dropped ordamaged in any way• the BlackBerry device or charging accessory does not operatenormally by following the instructions in the user documentation• the BlackBerry device or charging accessory exhibits a distinctchange in performanceTo reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, adjust only those controls thatare covered in the user documentation for your BlackBerry device. Animproper adjustment of other controls might cause damage and will oftenrequire extensive work by a qualified technician to restore your BlackBerrydevice, charging accessory, or any other accessory to normal operation.Failure to observe all safety instructions contained in the userdocumentation for your BlackBerry device will void the Limited Warrantyand might lead to suspension or denial of services to the offender, legalaction, or both.Device and battery disposalDo not dispose of either your BlackBerry® device or the battery in a fire.Your BlackBerry device should not be placed in household wastebins. Check local regulations for information about the disposalof electronic products in your area.Dispose of the battery in accordance with the laws andregulations in your area governing disposal of such cell types.19

About emergency calls and the BlackBerry Mobile VoiceSystemIf you have the BlackBerry® Mobile Voice System installed on yourBlackBerry device, the following statements are applicable to you:Emergency calls to 911, 112, 000, 999, or other internationally recognizednumbers intended to connect to a public safety answering point or similaremergency services are not processed through the BlackBerry® MobileVoice System, and are only processed from your BlackBerry device wheremobile network coverage is available from a wireless service provider. TheBlackBerry MVS is not designed or intended to be a replacement fortraditional telephone service. Additional arrangements must be made,separate from the BlackBerry MVS, for you to obtain access to traditionalfixed or wireless telephone services, such as emergency calling capability.RIM and its affiliates, and their respective officers, directors, andemployees shall have no responsibility or liability whatsoever for anypersonal injury, death, or damages arising out of or in connection with theinability to access emergency call services (for example, 911, 112, 000, or999) through the BlackBerry MVS. By using the BlackBerry MVS Client, youagree to the above. If you do not agree to the above, remove theBlackBerry MVS Client from your device.20

Compliance informationExposure to radio frequency signalsThe BlackBerry® device radio is a low power radio transmitter and receiver.When the BlackBerry device radio is turned on, it receives and also sendsout radio frequency signals. The BlackBerry device is designed to complywith Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Ministry of Internal Affairsand Communications (MIC), and Industry Canada (IC) guidelines respectingsafety levels of radio frequency exposure for wireless devices, which in turnare consistent with the following safety standards previously set byCanadian, U.S., and international standards bodies:• ANSI®/IEEE® C95.1, 2005, American National Standards Institute/Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standard forSafety Levels with Respect to Human Exposure to RadioFrequency Electromagnetic Fields, 3 kHz to 300 GHz• National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements(NCRP) Report 86, 1986, Biological Effects and Exposure Criteriafor Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields• Health Canada, Safety Code 6, 2009, Limits of Human Exposure toRadiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields in the Frequency Rangefrom 3 kHz to 300 GHz• EN 50360, 2001, Product standard to demonstrate thecompliance of mobile phones with the basic restrictions relatedto human exposure to electromagnetic fields (300 MHz to 3 GHz)21

• International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection(ICNIRP), 2009, Guidelines for Limiting Exposure to Time-VaryingElectric, Magnetic, and Electromagnetic fields (up to 300 GHz)• Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), 1999, CouncilRecommendation of 12 July 1999 on the limitation of exposure ofthe general public to electromagnetic fields (0 Hz to 300 GHz)• MIC, 2001, Article 14-2 of the Ordinance for Regulating RadioEquipmentTo maintain compliance with FCC, IC, MIC, and EU radio frequencyexposure guidelines when you carry the BlackBerry device on your body,use only accessories equipped with an integrated belt clip that are suppliedor approved by Research In Motion. Use of accessories that are notexpressly approved by RIM might violate FCC, IC, and EU radio frequencyexposure guidelines and might void any warranty applicable to theBlackBerry device. If you do not use a body-worn accessory equipped withan integrated belt clip supplied or approved by RIM when you carry theBlackBerry device, keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.59 in. (15 mm)from your body when the BlackBerry device is transmitting. When using anydata feature of the BlackBerry device, with or without a USB cable, hold theBlackBerry device at least 0.59 in. (15 mm) from your body. If you use abody-worn accessory not supplied by RIM when you carry the BlackBerrydevice, verify that the accessory does not contain metal and keep theBlackBerry device at least 0.59 in. (15 mm) from your body when theBlackBerry device is transmitting.To reduce radio frequency exposure consider these safety guidelines:22

• Use the BlackBerry device in areas where there is a strongwireless signal. The indicator that provides information about thestrength of the wireless signal is located in the upper-right cornerof the home screen and displays five ascending bars. Three ormore bars indicate a strong signal. A reduced signal display, whichmight occur in areas such as an underground parking structure orif you are traveling by train or car, might indicate increased poweroutput from your BlackBerry device as it attempts to connect to aweak signal.• Use hands-free operation if it is available and keep the BlackBerrydevice at least 0.59 in. (15 mm) from your body (including theabdomen of pregnant women and the lower abdomen ofteenagers) when the BlackBerry device is turned on andconnected to the wireless network. For more information aboutcarrying your BlackBerry device, see the holster information inthe "Accessories" section of this document.• Reduce the amount of time spent on calls.Specific absorption rate dataTHIS WIRELESS DEVICE MODEL MEETS GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS FOREXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVES WHEN USED AS DIRECTED IN THIS SECTION.The BlackBerry® device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designedand manufactured not to exceed the emission limits for exposure to radiofrequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission(FCC) of the U.S. Government, Industry Canada of the CanadianGovernment (IC), and recommended by The Council of the European Union23
