Important safety precautions
Please read the safety and operation instructions before using your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet or any accessories that
came with it. Retain these instructions for future use.
In some countries there may be restrictions on using Bluetooth enabled and wireless devices with encryption software.
Check with your local authorities.
Before you use your tablet, it is important that you read the compliance information and the
guidelines for safe use that are found in this guide. To find the latest safety and product
information, visit docs.blackberry.com/tablet.
Use only chargers approved by Research In Motion. Use of chargers that have not been approved by
RIM might present a risk of fire or explosion, which could cause serious injury, death, and property
loss.
Do not disassemble your tablet. Your tablet contains small parts that might be a choking hazard.
Most modern electronic equipment is shielded from radio frequency (RF) signals. However, certain
electronic equipment might not be shielded against the RF signals from your tablet.
Keep your tablet away from medical devices, including pacemakers and hearing aids, as they might
malfunction causing serious injury or death to you and others.
•
•
Always keep your tablet more than 7.88 inches (20 cm) from the pacemaker when your
tablet is turned on.
If you have any reason to suspect that interference with the pacemaker is taking place, turn
off all wireless connections on your tablet immediately.
Turn off all wireless connections on your tablet in health care facilities when any regulations posted
in these areas instruct you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment that
could be sensitive to external RF energy.
Do not use your tablet or accessories near water (for example, near a bathtub or a sink, in a wet
basement, or near a swimming pool) or spill liquid of any kind on your tablet or accessories as this
might cause a short circuit, a fire, or an electric shock, which could cause serious injury, death, and
property loss.
Exposure to flashing lights on your tablet can cause epileptic seizures or blackouts. If you or other
users are susceptible to epileptic seizures or blackouts, consult your physician before you use your
tablet. If you or others experience any disorientation, loss of awareness, twitching, convulsions, or
any involuntary movements, stop using your tablet immediately and consult a physician. The LED
notification light is located on the front of your tablet, next to the camera.
Do not install your tablet in your vehicle or use it while driving. Using your tablet while driving could
put you and others at greater risk of an accident causing serious injury, death, and property loss.
You are responsible for knowing and obeying the laws and regulations regarding the use of wireless
devices in the areas where you drive.
Store your tablet safely before driving your vehicle. Do not use a charging accessory as a means of

Specific absorption rate data
THIS WIRELESS DEVICE MODEL MEETS GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPOSURE TO RADIO WAVES WHEN
USED AS DIRECTED IN THIS SECTION.
The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured not to exceed the
emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the
U.S. Government, Industry Canada of the Canadian Government (IC), and recommended by The Council of the European
Union when used as directed in the previous section. These limits are part of comprehensive guidelines and establish
permitted levels of RF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based on standards that were developed by
independent scientific organizations through periodic and thorough evaluation of scientific studies.
The exposure standard for wireless devices employs a unit of measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rate, or
SAR. The SAR limit set by the FCC/IC is 1.6W/kg*. The SAR limit recommended by The Council of the European Union is
2.0W/kg**. Tests for SAR are conducted using standard operating positions specified by the FCC/IC with the device
transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at the
highest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the device while operating can be well below the maximum value.
This is because the device is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only the power required to reach the
network. In general, the closer you are to a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output.
Before a wireless device model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified to the FCC, IC, and The
Council of the European Union that it does not exceed the limit established by the government-adopted requirement for
safe exposure under the recommendations of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection
(ICNIRP). The tests are performed in positions and locations (for example, 5 mm from the body) as required by the FCC,
IC, and The Council of the European Union for each model.
Body-worn measurements differ among wireless device and phone models, depending upon available accessories and FCC,
IC, and The Council of the European Union requirements.
The highest SAR value for your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet model when tested for use 0 mm from the body is outlined as
follows:

* In the United States and Canada, the SAR limit for mobile devices used by the public is 1.6W/kg averaged over 1 g of
tissue for the body or head (4.0W/kg averaged over 10 g of tissue for the extremities - hands, wrists, ankles, and feet).
** In Europe, the SAR limit for mobile devices used by the public is 2.0W/kg averaged over 10 g of tissue for the body or
head (4.0W/kg averaged over 10 g of tissue for the extremities - hands, wrists, ankles, and feet). Studies suggest that the
standard incorporates a substantial margin of safety to give additional protection for the public and to account for any
variations in measurements.
The long-term characteristics or the possible physiological effects of Radio Frequency Electromagnetic fields have not
been evaluated by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL).
