Mounting3.1 Mounting Considerations• Never install the detector in an environment thatcauses a constant alarm in one technology; itshould never be left to operate with the LEDs in aconstant flashing green, yellow, or red condition. Adetector with one technology in constant alarm willcause an alarm output whenever the othertechnology alarms. Good installations start with theLEDs OFF when there is no target motion.• Point the unit away from outside traffic (forexample, roads, alleys, and parking lots).Microwave energy will pass through glassand most common non-metallicconstruction walls.• Avoid direct or indirect sunlight.• Point the unit away from glass exposed to theoutdoors and objects that may change temperaturerapidly (see Figure 1)The PIR detector will react to objectsrapidly changing temperature within itsfield-of-view.Figure 1: Avoid extreme temperature changelocations• Eliminate interference from nearby outsidesources.• Avoid installations where rotating machines (suchas ceiling fans) are normally in operation withinthe coverage pattern (see Figure 2).

LED OperationThe detector uses 3 colored LEDs to indicate thevarious alarm and supervision trouble conditions thatthat exist. See Table 2.Table 2: Status of LEDsWalkTestStatus Condition Red Yellow GreenDisabled All Off Off OffPower-Up Sequential Green, Yellow, RedFlashingDual Alarm Flashing Off OffMicrowaveAlarmOff Flashing OffPIR Alarm Off Off FlashingEnabledNo Activity Off Off OffDuring walk testing, the LEDs light for the firsttechnology (microwave or PIR) and then light red toindicate a detector alarm. The LEDs will not indicateactivation of the second technology with color. If the detector experiences a Microwave or PIR self-testfailure, it is in need of replacement.6. Mirror Alignment1. Using Pet Immunity for Pet Applications7. Walk Test1. Wait at least two minutes, after applying power, tostart walk tests.During the warm-up period, the LEDs willflash red, yellow and green until the unitstabilizes (approximately one to twominutes) and has not registered movementfor two seconds. When the LEDs stopflashing, the detector is ready to be tested. With no motion in the protection area, theLEDs should not be flashing. If the LEDsare flashing, recheck the protection area fordisturbances affecting the microwave(yellow) or PIR (green) technologies.7.1 Establishing PIR Pattern Coverage1. Enable Walk Test via the keypad.2. Turn the Microwave range adjust to minimum(counter-clockwise) and replace the cover.Figure 7: Microwave Range Adjustment3. Walk test across the pattern at its farthest edge, then several times closer to the detector. Startwalking from outside of the intended protectionarea, and observe the three colored LEDs. Theedge of the pattern is determined by the first greenPIR activation of the LEDs (or the first redactivation if the yellow microwave LED activatesfirst).4. Walk test from the opposite direction to determineboth boundaries.5. While standing 3 m to 6 m (10 ft. to 20 ft.) fromthe detector, slowly bring your arm up and into thepattern to mark the lower boundary on PIR alarm.Repeat from above for the upper boundary. The center of the pattern should be pointedtoward the center of the intendedprotection area.6. If the desired coverage cannot be achieved, tryangling the coverage pattern up or down to assurethe pattern is not aimed too high or low.7.2 Establishing Microwave CoverageWait one minute after removing/replacingthe cover so the microwave portion of thedetector can settle. Wait at least tenseconds between the following walk testingprocedures.1. Enable Walk Test via the keypad.2. The LEDs should be OFF before walk testing.3. Walk test across the pattern at the intendedcoverage’s farthest end. Start walking from outsidethe intended protection area and observe the 3colored LEDs. The edge of the microwave patternis determined by the first yellow, microwaveactivation of the LEDs (or the first red activation ifthe LEDs show green first).4. If adequate range can not be reached, increase theMicrowave Range Adjust slightly. Continue walktesting (waiting one minute afterremoving/replacing the cover) and adjusting therange until the farthest edge of desired coveragehas been accurately placed.Do not adjust the microwave range higherthan required. Doing so will enable thedetector to catch movement outside of theintended coverage pattern.5. Walk test the unit from all directions to determineall the pattern boundaries.7.3 Verify Detector CoverageThe LEDs should be OFF before walk testing.1. Walk test the unit from all directions to determinethe detection boundaries. A detector alarm issignaled by the first red activation of the 3 coloredLEDs after an initial green or yellow activation.
DS840LSN | Installation Guide | 8. Supervision Features EN | 7Bosch Security Systems | 9/03 | PRELIMINARY 4998132113Ar118. Supervision FeaturesThe supervision features function as follows:• PIR/Microwave: The complete circuit operationof these subsystems is checked approximatelyevery 12 hours. If the PIR or microwave subsystemfails, this will be communicated to the controlpanel.• Default: The detector will default to PIRtechnology protection if the microwave subsystemfails.9. Other Information• Maintenance: At least once a year, the range andcoverage should be verified. To ensure continualdaily operation, the end user should be instructedto walk through the far end of the coveragepattern. This ensures an alarm output prior toarming the system.• Pattern Masking: The PIR coverage pattern maybe masked using masking tape or electrical tape onthe inside of the mirror. Many adhesives will either destroy themirror surface or leave enough residuebehind to degrade the coverageperformance. Be sure to clean the mirrorsurface with a mild window cleaningsolution after masking removal.Masking only eliminates the PIR portion ofthe coverage and has no affect on themicrowave pattern.Add the Pet Filter for pet applications only.10. Using Pet ImmunityThe DS840LSN detector provides reasonableprotection from nuisance alarms caused by thefollowing sources:• One dog up to 27 kg (100 lbs.)• Up to 10 cats• Multiple small rodents, such as rats• Random flying birdsThe Pet Filter is not a mirror mask. Use onlythe supplied filter for pet applications. To take full advantage of the Pet Immunity feature, thefollowing steps should be followed:1. Add the Pet Filter to the mirror (included in thehardware bag). See Figure 8.Figure 8: Applying the Pet Filter121 - Pet Filter2 - Mirror Assembly2. Mount the detector 2 m (6.5 ft.) high and adjust theMirror angle as in Section 6. Mirror Alignment.3. Mount where the animals can not come within1.8 m (6 ft.) of the detector by climbing onfurniture or other objects.4. Adjust the microwave range for the minimumacceptable coverage for the room in which thedetector is installed.Pet immunity is only available when usingthe filter provided with the detector. Thispet nuisance protection has not beenverified by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc
