It provides a simple and convenient means to enjoy the surround sound from your LIFESTYLE® system or powered Acoustimass® system. The SL2 features a small radio frequency transmitter and receiver pair that delivers the left and right surround audio signals, complete with amplification, to surround speakers in the rear of your room. Running cable from the front to the back of the room is unnecessary. Unpacking the carton Carefully unpack the carton and save all packing materials, which provide the most secure way to transport the product. Check to be sure your system includes all of the parts shown (Figure 1). If any part appears damaged, do not attempt to use it. Notify Bose or your authorized Bose dealer immediately. For Bose contact information, refer to the address sheet included in the carton. Setting the transmitter for your system If your speakers are part of an Acoustimass® speaker system, you need to set the switch on the bottom of the SL2 transmitter to Other (Figure 2). Figure 2 Bottom of the SL2 transmitter Speaker switch Switch For use of a LIFESTYLE® system with the SL2 Wireless Surround Link, the current default switch setting is optimal. There is no need to change the setting. Important note: Running the ADAPTiQ® audio calibration system, which is provided with your LIFESTYLE® system, helps ensure the most accurate sound from your system. Be sure to use it after the SL2 is connected and your surround speakers are in the final position. Choosing positions for your SL2 transmitter and receiver Radio frequency transmissions make this product easy to place. It is seldom necessary to point the SL2 transmitter at its receiver. This allows you to hide both from view if you like. The SL2 transmitter, identified on the label, is also distinguished by a single input jack (see Figure 3 on page 6). The SL2 receiver, which is also labeled, has two output jacks. 1. Place the SL2 transmitter within 6 1/2 feet (2 meters) of the Acoustimass® module. Make sure it is within reach of an AC (mains) outlet. 2. Place the SL2 receiver at the same end of the room as your surround speakers. It, too, should be within reach of an AC (mains) outlet. Position the transmitter/receiver pair: • From 6 1/2 feet (2 meters) to 30 feet (9.2 meters) apart. • Where the sides are unobstructed to allow for ventilation. • Upright (neither upside down nor on a side) on the floor or other flat, stable surface. Note: If you experience any problem with communications between the SL2 transmitter and receiver, positioning them within line of sight to each other may be helpful. For further suggestions on how to deal with such problems, refer to “Troubleshooting” on page 9. ç YOUR SL2 WIRELESS SURROUND LINK Making the connections Use the small power pack with the SL2 transmitter (Figure 3). Or, you may prefer to use the longer surround speaker cables that came with your speakers. Note: To use the SL2 supplied cables with Jewel Cube® speakers, first attach a Jewel Cube adapter to each cable as described in “To adapt the surround speaker cable for Jewel Cube® speakers” on page 8. To make the receiver connections Using the supplied 20-ft cable, follow the steps below: 1. Insert the RCA connectors into the jacks on the back of the SL2 receiver (Figure 5). • Connect the purple one marked RR to the purple jack labeled RR. • Connect the green one marked LR to the green jack labeled LR. 2. Connect the wire ends of the cable to your surround speakers. • Insert the connector marked RR into the jack on the speaker that is placed on the right. • Insert the connector marked LR into the jack on the speaker that is placed on the left. For details on how to set up and make connections to your surround speakers, refer to the owner’s guide provided with them. Figure 5 SL2 receiver connection to speakers 3. If both transmitter and receiver power supplies are connected and plugged in, the Status LEDs on both the SL2 transmitter and receiver light a solid green to indicate they are communicating with each other. For an explanation of the other LED colors, refer to “What the Status LEDs indicate” on page 8. ç YOUR SL2 WIRELESS SURROUND LINK To adapt the surround speaker cable for Jewel Cube® speakers Follow these steps before you connect the provided surround speaker cable to your Jewel Cube® speakers. 1. Loosen the screws on the Jewel Cube® speaker adapter so you can insert the two-wire ends into its terminals. • Insert the plain wire (–) into the plain terminal. • Insert the red-banded wire (+) into the red terminal. 2. Tighten the screws (Figure 6). Figure 6 Jewel Cube speaker Using the adapter with a Jewel Cube speaker Red terminal screw Red band Adapter on wire Using this cable with the adapters attached, follow the steps in “To make the receiver connections” on page 7. Be sure to match each adapter to the proper speaker, right or left. What the Status LEDs indicate On the rear of the SL2 transmitter and receiver, the color of the Status LED indicates how each unit is functioning. The indicators include: • Blinking green: the power pack is plugged in and the unit is searching for a signal. • Solid green: the receiver and transmitter are communicating with each other. This green LED stays lit for several minutes after you turn off your system. • Solid orange: in sleep mode for low power use when there is no signal to communicate. • Blinking red: the SL2 receiver is too hot, or there is a problem with the surround speaker cable connection between the SL2 receiver and the speakers. For information on how to deal with a blinking red LED, see “Troubleshooting” on page 9. g ç YOUR SL2 WIRELESS SURROUND LINK Troubleshooting Problem What to do Blinking red Status LED on either the SL2 transmitter or receiver • Disconnect the unit from the AC power outlet. • Remove any possible obstruction to ventilation and reposition the unit upright with clear space around the ventilation openings on each side. If the ventilation was obstructed, allow the unit a few minutes to cool before reconnecting it to the AC power outlet. • If it continues to blink red, check the cable connection between the SL2 receiver and the surround speakers. Make sure the connections are secure and the cable wires are not touching each other, which can cause a short circuit. Refer to “Connecting the SL2 receiver” on page 7. Reconnect the unit to the AC power outlet. • If it continues to blink red, unplug the unit from the power outlet and contact Bose® Customer Service. Refer to the address list included in the SL2 carton. No sound or intermittent sound • Make sure the audio source is playing and the program selected includes surround sound audio. • Check to be sure both the SL2 transmitter and receiver power packs are properly plugged into functioning AC power outlets. Refer to “Making the connections” on page 6. • Make sure that cables are properly connected to the SL2 transmitter, the Acoustimass® module, the SL2 receiver, and the surround speakers. The connectors must be inserted securely in the jacks. • Make sure the SL2 transmitter and receiver are no less than 6 1/2 feet (2 meters) and no more than 30 feet (9.2 meters) apart. • Locate the small opening labeled Reset on the bottom of both the SL2 transmitter and the SL2 receiver. Insert a fine-pointed tool (like a straightened paper clip), into the small opening on the transmitter and then, within 30 seconds, on the receiver. • Move the receiver, the transmitter, or both so the transmission path between them does not intersect with large metal objects in your room or other obstructions (like a fish tank full of water). When the problem is resolved, the Status LEDs turn a solid green. Interference with a wireless (5.8GHz) phone • Increase the distance from each SL2 unit to the phone. • Press the channel button on the phone (if one is provided) to choose a different channel for phone transmissions.
