Surround sound receivers for Bose® 901® Direct/Reflecting® speaker system The Bose 901 active equalizer is an integral part of the 901 Direct/Reflecting speaker system allowing for proper performance and sound. Over the past several years, manufacturers of receivers have made fewer products compatible with external equalizers — including the Bose 901 equalizer. To connect the 901 equalizer, a compatible receiver must have both preamp in and preamp out jacks. Alternatively, a separate preamplifier can be used in conjunction with a power amplifier to connect the equalizer. The following pages describe connecting the 901 equalizer with compatible components: Page | 1 Using a preamplifier and power amplifier A preamplifier can be used in conjunction with a power amplifier to connect to the 901 equalizer. The connection diagram below shows the most common connections for this type of setup Page | 2 Using a receiver with preamp out and preamp in connections Compatible receivers should have “Preamp Out / Main Out” and “Preamp In / Main In” jacks. The 901 equalizer can be connected as diagrammed below Note: If you are using 901 speakers with a surround sound system, the 901 equalizer signal must be directed to the 901 speakers only. The boost of the 901 equalizer may damage another brand of speaker. If you are using a self-contained surround sound receiver, the receiver must have a section marked "Preamp Out/Amp In" or "Adaptor Circuit" on the back panel. The "Preamp Out/Amp In" or "Adaptor Circuit" jacks are connected to each other by little silver connecting bars (horseshoe pins). If your receiver has this section, you can remove the pins and connect the "Preamp Out" to the "Input" of the Bose equalizer (under Amplifier Connections), and the "Output" of the equalizer (under Amplifier Connections) to the "Amp/Adaptor In." In this configuration, the tape circuit of the equalizer will not be utilized. In some cases, connecting the equalizer in this section may introduce a little background noise, which is due to noise generated by the preamp and boosted by the equalizer. This was a problem with some older electronic equipment. Newer equipment, however, generates very little noise, so using the preamp circuit should not be a problem. If your receiver does not have the "Preamp Out/Amp In" or "Adaptor" circuit, the 901 speakers will not be compatible for surround sound use; but the conventional stereo mode will operate as normal.
