ANSIZ21.10.3‐2014/CSA4.3‐2014.AllgasstoragewaterheatersintheUnitedStatesand

Canadaaresafetycertifiedtothesestandards.Accordingtothemostrecentbulletins,the

committeesthatoverseethesestandardshavemodifiedbothstandardstoprohibittheuseof

cellularcorepipe(alsoknownasfoamcore)forventinggasfiredwaterheaters.Thestandards

weremodifiedintwoareasregardingcellularcoreventing:

 Thesectionofthestandardthatcoverstestingofthewaterheaterfornonmetallic

venting:theASTMnumbersforCellularCoreventmaterialwereremovedanda

statementwasaddedprohibitingtheuseofcellularcore.

 Thesectionofthestandardthatcoversmanufacturer’sinstructions:wasmodifiedto

requireaspecificstatementprohibitingtheuseofcellularcoreforventing.

AlthoughtheeffectivedatesforthesenewstandardsareApril2016(ANSIZ21.10.1/CSA4.1‐

2014)andJune2016(ANSIZ21.10.3/CSA4.3‐2014),BradfordWhitemuststartmodifyingthe

installationinstructionsaheadofthesedatestoensurethatallwaterheatersmadeafterthe

effectivedatewillshipwiththemodifiedinstructions.Overthenextseveralmonthseachofthe

variousinstructionsthatcoverourpowerventandpowerdirectventwaterheaterswillbe

changed.Thetimingofthechangeswillvarydependingonanumberoffactors.

Pleasenote:Asistruewithanywaterheaterinstallation,theinstallermustfollowtheprinted

instructionsthatwereshippedwiththewaterheater.

Newinstallations,aswellasreplacementapplications,mustmeetthespecificANSI/CSA

certificationversionthatisprintedonthewaterheater’sratingplate.Thisincludesallaspects

ofthewaterheaterinstallation.
