The instrument panel cluster includes these key features: A. Tachometer B. Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge C. Odometer/Trip Odometer D. Fuel Gauge E. Speedometer D E Note: The instrument panel cluster is designed to let you know about many important aspects of your vehicle’s operation. It is important to read your Owner Manual and become familiar with the information being relayed to you by the lights, gauges and indicators, as well as what action can be taken to ensure safety and to prevent damage. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 4 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 4 Getting to Know Your Aveo/Aveo 5 SAFETY & SECURITY Rear Center Safety Belt Operation Your vehicle has a retractable safety belt in the rear center seating position. The safety belt should be unlatched and retracted only when folding the rear seat. • When fastening the safety belt, connect it to the belt buckle with the red release button. • When folding the rear seatback, disconnect the safety belt latch plate by inserting a narrow-ended tool (such as a key) into the hole on the belt buckle. Allow the belt to retract. • When unfolding the rear seatback, connect the safety belt by pushing the safety belt latch plate into the belt buckle with the key hole. Make sure the belt is not twisted. See Section 1 of your Owner Manual. Passenger Airbag Status Indicator Your vehicle is equipped with a Passenger Sensing System located in the front passenger seat for the front passenger frontal airbag, and a passenger airbag status indicator located on the center-mounted Secondary Information Center (SIC). Note: It is recommended that children not be placed in the front passenger seat, even with the Passenger Sensing System. All children should be secured in a rear seat, including an infant riding in a rear-facing infant seat, a child riding in a forward-facing child seat or an older child riding in a booster seat. See Section 1 of your Owner Manual. Door Locks and Lockout Protection Your vehicle may have a central door locking/unlocking system that is activated from the driver’s door. When the driver’s door is closed, pushing the lock knob down (shown below) centrally locks all doors. To prevent accidental lockouts, this function will not operate when the driver’s door is open, and the driver’s door itself (with or without power door locks) will not lock when it is open. You can also lock or unlock your vehicle with the ignition key, or by using the optional Remote Keyless Entry transmitter. To further prevent lockouts, the Remote Keyless Entry System will not lock the driver’s door if it is open. However, central locking will lock all doors if the driver’s door is closed and other doors are open. See Section 2 of your Owner Manual. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 5 5 Remote Keyless Entry and Content Theft-Deterrent Systems (if equipped) On equipped vehicles, use the Remote Keyless Entry transmitter (integral to the ignition key) to: • Unlock the vehicle doors by pressing the Lock/Unlock Sedan model Remote button once. Keyless Entry shown • Lock the doors and arm the Content Theft-Deterrent System by pressing the Lock/Unlock button once. • Open the trunk by pressing and holding the Trunk Release button for one second (Sedan model only). The Content Theft-Deterrent System will arm only if you use the remote transmitter or lock the doors with a power lock switch. It will not arm if you lock the door with a key. To turn off the alarm, press the Unlock button on the transmitter or unlock any door with the key. The remote transmitter’s range is up to about 20 feet (6 m). If it doesn’t work or range is reduced, check the: • Distance — you may be too far away. • Location — other vehicles or objects may be blocking the signal. • Battery in the transmitter (use replacement battery CR1616). • Transmitter to ensure it matches the vehicle (see Owner Manual). See Section 2 of your Owner Manual. COMFORT Climate Controls Sedan model shown Use the following controls to operate your climate control system: Air Temperature: Turn the temperature knob to increase or decrease the temperature. (Fan): Turn the fan control knob to increase or decrease fan speed. A/C (Air Conditioning) (if equipped): With the fan turned on, press this button to turn the air conditioning on or off. The air conditioning turns on automatically in the Defog and Defrost modes. (Recirculation): Press this button to prevent outside air from entering the vehicle. If your vehicle has an air intake lever (base models), move the lever to choose the recirculation mode. Extended use of the recirculation mode can cause the windows to fog. If this happens, select the Defrost mode. Airflow Modes: Use this knob to direct the flow of air into your vehicle. Modes include: (Vent): Directs air to the instrument panel outlets. (Bi-Level): Directs air to the instrument panel outlets and the floor outlets. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 6 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 6 Getting to Know Your Aveo/Aveo 5 (Floor): Directs most of the air to the floor outlets and the rear outlets (if equipped). (Recirculation does not work in this mode.) (Defog): Directs most of the air to the windshield and the floor outlets and some air to the side window outlets. (Recirculation does not work in this mode.) To help clear the side windows quickly: 1. Select the bi-level mode. 2. Select the highest fan speed. 3. Select A/C (if equipped). 4. Select the temperature. (Defrost): Directs most air to the windshield and some air to the side window outlets and floor outlets. (Recirculation does not work in this mode.) (Rear Defogger): Press this button to turn the rear window defogger on or off. The heated outside rearview mirrors (if equipped) will also activate. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual. ENTERTAINMENT Audio Systems While most of the features on your radio will look familiar, following are some that may be new: (Power/Volume): Press this knob to turn the system on or to mute the volume. Turn the knob to adjust the volume. Press and hold the knob to turn off the system. (Seek/Scan): Press the up or down arrow button to go to the next or previous radio station or, when a CD is playing, to the next track or the start of the current track. (Tune): Press these buttons to select radio stations or, when a CD is playing, to select a track. SCAN/AST: Press this button to scan radio stations. Press the button again to stop scanning. SOUND: Press this button to access the tone control (bass/treble), speaker control (balance/fade) and other system features. Turn the volume knob to adjust the settings. INFO/DISP: Press this button to display text information related to the current FM-RDS or XM station (if equipped). CD/AUX: Press this button to play a CD instead of the radio. Press again and the system will automatically search for an auxiliary input device such as a portable audio player. Auxiliary Input Jack (if equipped): A portable audio player can be connected to the auxiliary input jack located on the radio. Setting Preset Stations Before setting your preset stations, park the vehicle. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 7 7 Note: Choosing to engage in extended searching for specific audio stations or songs by using buttons and knobs — or to give extended attention to entertainment tasks — can lead you to look away from the road frequently or longer than usual. Looking away from the road for prolonged periods may cause you to miss seeing things on the road that you need to see. Be sure to keep your eyes on the road and mind on the drive — and avoid engaging in extended searching for specific items while driving. To set your preset stations: 1. Turn on the radio. 2. Press the AM or FM button. 3. Tune in the desired radio station. 4. Press and hold one of the six numbered pushbuttons until a beep sounds. 5. Repeat steps 2–4 for each pushbutton. MP3 Capability (if equipped) If your AM/FM stereo with CD has MP3 playing capability, a CD-R or CD-RW containing MP3 audio files will play automatically when inserted into the CD player. An MP3 symbol will be displayed. Portable Audio Player A portable audio player (iPod®, Palm, MP3 player or other portable-type player) can be connected to the auxiliary input jack located on the radio. When connected, the radio automatically begins playing audio from the player over the vehicle speakers. To optimize speaker volume, fully increase the volume level on the portable player. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual. Multiple-Disc CD Player (if equipped) With the in-dash 6-disc CD player, a CD cannot be directly loaded. To load CDs: • Press and release the LOAD button to load a single CD. Press and hold the LOAD button for two seconds to load multiple CDs. Follow the display prompts to load each CD. To play a specific CD: • Press the DSC– or DSC+ pushbutton to select the desired CD number. To eject CDs: • Press the EJECT button once to eject the CD that is currently playing. Press and hold the EJECT button for two seconds to eject all CDs. If a CD is not removed after several seconds, it will be pulled back into the player automatically. Note: CDs with any affixed labels may jam in the CD player. Label a CD using a permanent marker. If more than one CD is inserted into the slot at one time, or if scratched or damaged CDs are played, the CD player could be damaged. When using the CD player, use only CDs in good condition without labels; load one CD at a time; and keep the CD player and the loading slot free of foreign materials, liquids or debris. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 8 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 8 Getting to Know Your Aveo/Aveo 5 Audio Steering Wheel Controls (if equipped) The following audio functions can be adjusted at the steering wheel: + VOLUME –: Toggle the A outer button (A) upward or downward to adjust the volume. PWR: Press this button to turn the system on or off. MODE: Press this button to switch between AM, FM and CD operation. SEEK: Press this button to go to the next preset radio station or, when a CD is playing, to the next track. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual. CONVENIENCE Folding Rear Seat To fold the rear seatbacks for additional cargo space: 1. Lower the head restraints completely. 2. Remove the safety belts from the belt guides (sedan model) or detach the center safety belt from the mini buckle by pressing the black release button (5-door model). 3. Pull up the release knob on top of the seatback. 4. Fold each seatback forward and down. On the 5-door model, to fold the seat cushion: 5. Move the safety belt/buckles out of the space between the seatback and seat cushion. 6. Pull the release handles on the rear side of each seat cushion. 7. Lift and fold up the seat. 8. Clip the hook to the front seat head restraint to secure the folded rear seat. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 9 9 Move the selector switch to the center position when not adjusting a mirror. See Section 2 of your Owner Manual. Wiper/Washer Controls 9. Store the safety belt/buckles in the storage area under the floor mat. Reverse the process to return the rear seat to the upright position, ensuring that the seat cushion and seatbacks are securely latched and that the safety belts/buckles are in their original positions. See Section 1 of your Owner Manual. Power Mirrors The outside rearview mirrors may be adjusted using the controls located on the left side of the instrument panel. Use the selector switch (L/R) to select the driver-side (left) mirror or passengerside (right) mirror; and then use the control pad to adjust the mirror up, down or side to side. The lever on the right side of the steering column operates the front windshield wipers and the rear wiper (if equipped). Move the lever to the following positions to operate the front wipers: HI (High Speed): Move the lever to this position to wipe at high speed. LO (Low Speed): Move the lever to this position to wipe steadily at slow speed. INT (Intermittent): Move the lever to this position to choose a delayed wiping cycle. OFF: Move the lever to this position to turn off the windshield wipers. To wash the windshield, pull the lever toward you. When you release it, the washers will stop and the wipers will continue for several cycles, and then go to the previous setting. Rear Wiper/Washer: Push the lever away from you to operate the rear wiper. The wiper operates intermittently in the first position. Push it to the second position and washer fluid will spray onto the rear window and the wiper will operate continuously. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 10 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 10 Getting to Know Your Aveo/Aveo 5 Cruise Control The cruise control buttons are located on the right side of the steering wheel. Setting Cruise Control A To set the cruise control: 1. Press the ON-OFF button (A) to turn on cruise control. 2. Accelerate to the desired speed. 3. Press the SET button. An indicator light on the instrument panel cluster will illuminate. 4. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal. Resuming a Set Speed To return to a set speed after having used the brakes: • Press the RESUME button. You must be going more than 24 mph. Increasing Speed To increase speed while using cruise control: • Use the accelerator to reach the desired speed; then press the SET button. Release the button and the accelerator pedal. • Press and hold the ACC button until you reach the desired speed; then release the button. • Press and release the ACC button to increase speed by 1 mph. Reducing Speed To reduce speed while using cruise control: • Press and hold the COAST button until you reach the desired lower speed; then release the button. • Press and release the COAST button to reduce speed by 1 mph. Ending Cruise Control To deactivate cruise control: • Step lightly on the brake pedal, or push the clutch pedal if you have a manual transaxle. • Press the ON-OFF button. See Section 2 of your Owner Manual. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 5/7/07 11:32 AM Page 11 11 Accessory Power Outlet and Cigarette Lighter Sunroof (if equipped) Your vehicle has an accessory power outlet to power accessories such as a cell phone. It is located next to the parking brake. To use it, remove the protective cap and plug in the accessory. Replace the cap when not in use. (See your Owner Manual for important safety details.) The cigarette lighter is located to the right of the front ashtray. With the ignition key in the ACC or ON position (the lighter will not operate in the OFF position), push the lighter knob in all the way and release it. When the element is fully heated, the knob will pop back out automatically. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual. The control switch for the sunroof, located on the headliner between the sun visors, includes these features: Vent: To open the sunroof to the vent position, press the Up button. Press the Down button to close the sunroof from the vent position. Open/Close: To fully open the sunroof, press and hold the Down button. Press and hold the Up button to fully close the sunroof. See Section 2 of your Owner Manual. PERFORMANCE & MAINTENANCE Malfunction Indicator Lamp/ Service Engine Soon If the light is flashing: When it is safe to do so, stop the vehicle and turn the engine off. Wait 10 seconds and restart the engine. If the light continues to flash, see your dealer for service as soon as possible. If the light is on steady: If you recently put fuel into your vehicle, reinstall the fuel cap, making sure that it is tight. A few driving trips with the cap properly installed should turn the light off. See Section 3 of your Owner Manual. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 12 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 12 Getting to Know Your Aveo/Aveo 5 Automatic Transmission Hold Control Mode (if equipped) Integrated with the optional automatic transmission, this feature gives the driver complete control over the transmission gear selection. When Hold Control is selected in the “D” position, the transmission is held in 3rd gear, which locks out overdrive (4th gear) and provides additional torque and responsiveness at most higher speeds. This allows for engine braking during higher speed descents and decelerations. It also reduces/eliminates wheelspin when starting out on snow or ice. Similarly, if Hold Control is selected in the “2” position, the transmission will start in 2nd gear (instead of 1st), helping reduce wheelspin when starting out on slippery surfaces. Note: Since placing Hold Control in the “D” position locks the transmission in 3rd gear and prevents downshifts to 2nd or 1st gear, acceleration from a standstill or near standstill on dry pavement will be slower than expected. Hold Control should be deselected during these situations. To set the Hold mode: 1. Place the shift lever in the gear range you want to hold. 2. Press the HOLD button located on the shift lever console. (The HOLD indicator light on the Secondary Information Center or instrument panel cluster will illuminate.) Press the button again to turn off the Hold mode and return to normal automatic transmission operation. See Section 2 of your Owner Manual. Reverse Lockout Feature (Manual Transmission) This feature prevents the engagement of Reverse (R) gear when the vehicle is moving forward. To shift into Reverse (R), depress the clutch pedal; then lift up the ring on the shift lever and shift into Reverse (R). Slowly release the clutch pedal while pressing the accelerator. Note: Shifting into Reverse (R) gear while your vehicle is moving forward could damage the transmission. Shift into Reverse (R) only after the vehicle is stopped. See Section 2 of your Owner Manual. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 13 13 Cold Weather Automatic Transmission Shifting When operating your vehicle in severe cold conditions, the transmission may be prevented from shifting into 4th gear until the transmission fluid has warmed up to its operational temperature. It may take several miles of driving to warm up the fluid and enable the 4th gear upshift. While the fluid is warming up, your vehicle will shift normally between 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. See Section 2 of your Owner Manual. Lift the hood and release the hood prop from its retainer on the underside of the hood. Place the hood prop into the slot on the inner fender. Opening the Hood To open the hood, pull the hood release handle located on the lower-left side of the instrument panel. At the front of the vehicle, feel under the front-center lip of the hood for the secondary hood release and push the lever up, using a squeezing motion. To close the hood, lift up on it to relieve pressure on the hood prop. Remove the hood prop from the slot in the inner fender and return the prop to its retainer on the underside of the hood. Lower the hood to 8–10 inches above the vehicle and release it to latch it fully. Check to ensure that it is latched properly and repeat if necessary. See Section 5 of your Owner Manual. Aveo Aveo 5 2008 A 14 3/22/07 11:23 AM Page 14 Getting to Know Your Aveo/Aveo 5 Tire Pressure Monitor The Tire Pressure Monitor alerts you when a significant reduction in pressure occurs in one or more of your vehicle’s tires by illuminating the (Low Tire Pressure) warning light on the instrument panel. The low tire pressure warning light will remain on until you correct the tire pressure. Correcting the Tire Pressure When the low tire pressure warning light illuminates, you must fill the tire to the proper tire inflation pressure (just as you must refuel the vehicle when the low fuel warning light illuminates). The Tire and Loading Information label on the driver’s door pillar shows the correct inflation pressure for the tires when they’re cold. “Cold” means your vehicle has been sitting for at least three hours or driven no more than one mile. You may notice during cooler conditions that the low tire pressure warning light will appear when the vehicle is first started and then turn off as you start to drive the vehicle. This could be an early indicator that your tire pressures are getting low and need to be inflated to the proper pressure. Note: The Tire Pressure Monitor can alert you about low tire pressure, but it doesn’t replace normal monthly tire maintenance. See Section 5 of your Owner Manual.
