Whenever the unit is on you can receive communications. Turn the Volume control clockwise to switch power on. Set volume to desired level. Turn the Volume control counter-clockwise to turn power off. Incorrect positioning can damage both the batteries and the unit. Antenna Antenna See Accessories on page 27. Charge ports are located on side of unit. Note When batteries are low or need charging the ( ) BATT LOW indicator will blink. Replace alkaline batteries. Pull lock tab down and lift door up (towards you) to remove battery cover. 2 Insert six “AA” batteries. Position batteries according to polarity markings. The radio is equipped with a SMA female antenna connector and a matching UHF antenna. Place top of unit with antenna on connector, turning clockwise until tight. You can replace this antenna with an optional mobile antenna when using the radio inside a car, or a base antenna in a fixed location. PLACE ON CONNECTOR. If there are no transmissions within 10 seconds, the unit will automatically switch to mode. PRESS AND RELEASE POWER SAVER Note The Auto Battery Save Circuit does not effect the unit ’s ability to receive incoming transmissions. Press and release MON Button to illuminate display for ten seconds. Caution Caution Do not use an external speaker / microphone with common ground circuits with this radio. The radio’s BTL (Bridge Tied Load) Audio Circuit would be overloaded and become damaged over time. We recommend you use Cobra’s authorized accessories. The icon will flash. High/Low Power High/Low Power When in close proximity to other party, or during clear weather conditions you can switch from High to Low Power to extend battery life. The CTCSS (Continuous Tone Controlled Squelch System) is a great convenience when you are in an area with many radios. It acts like a gate to transmissions from other radios. Once your radio is set to a CTCSS code, you will only hear transmissions from other radios on the same channel and the same CTCSS code. Turn on the microTalk Professional. An audible “tone”will indicate the unit is on and then the LCD will self-test for 3 seconds and then go to Operational Mode. Note Units must be on same channel and subchannels to communicate. PRESS UP OR DOWN Note Push and hold Channel up or down Buttons for fast channel advance. Turn on microTalk Professional. Select CTCSS Subchannel Note CTCSS (Continuous Tone Controlled Squelch System) is an advanced subcoding system that allows segmentation of a main channel. Note If you push and hold the Mode Button,the LCD display will cycle through the different functions. Battery Low Battery Low Press and release Function Button. Small numbers flash next to channel display on LCD. Note When battery capacity is at the 1/4 level it is recommended that you replace batteries or recharge your rechargeable batteries. PRESS UP OR DOWN When in normal use the ( ) icon may begin flashing. This is a warning to you that your batteries are getting low. This alerts the other party that you are finished talking and it’s OK for them to begin talking. Note While Talk Button is depressed you cannot receive incoming calls. Press and hold PTT Talk Button. The ( ) icon will appear. Note When you release the Talk Button,the person you are talking to will hear a tone indi cating that it’s ok to talk. See Talk Confirmation Tone section on page 11. Standby Mode Standby Mode When finished talking, Release PTT Talk Button to receive incoming transmissions. Hold mic about 2 inches from mouth. Speak in a normal voice. Your microTalk Professional is always in the standby mode when the PTT Talk Button is not pressed and you are not in function mode. See Advanced Features section on page 16. An audible “tone” will indicate the unit is on. The LCD will self-test for 3 seconds and then to operational mode. PRESS UP OR DOWN Press and release Call Button. The ( ) indicator icon will flash and the ( ) icon will remain on for 3 seconds. The unit you are calling will hear a 2 second ring tone. Note Your incoming “Call”audio ringing level is dependent on your unit’s volume setting. Your microTalk Professional is always in the standby mode when the Talk Button is not depressed. Select desired channel by pressing and releasing Channel Button up or down. Both the calling and receiving units must be on same channel and subchannel for the call function to work. 12 13 Cobra PR 1000 manual (4216 copy 12/4/00 4:08 PM Page 14 Operation Auto Squelch Maximum Range Extender External Microphone/Speaker Jack Auto Squelch External Microphone/Speaker Jack Your microTalk Professional is equipped with Auto Squelch, which automatically shuts off weak transmissions and unwanted noise due to terrain conditions or if you have reached your range limit. Your microTalk Professional 2-Way Radio can be fitted with a variety of accessories, (not included) freeing your hands for other tasks. Maximum Range Extender To attach an external microphone/speaker accessory: Auto squelch can be temporarily removed to allow all signals to enter (Maximum Range Extender). PRESS UP OR DOWN Range is dependent on battery condition and geographic territory. Auto Monitor Press and hold to enter. Insert plug into of unit. SPK/MIC hole on side Button to allow all signals Auto Monitor When the signal you want to hear is consistently weak, you may place the radio in Maximum Range mode without having to constantly hold the button: Press and hold the Button for five seconds.You will hear an audible beep confirmation. Note To exit out of function mode and return to operational mode without saving entered information simply press the Lock Button. Press Function Button until flashes. Button Tone Settings PRESS AND RELEASE Note When pressing the radio button, the user will now hear an audible tone. PRESS AND RELEASE Press Enter Button until confirmation beep and icon disappears. 16 Press Channel Button up or down to turn on or off. To set option: Press Enter Button. This will immediately enter new setting; or Press Function Button. This will enter new setting and go to new Function M ode; or Wait 10 seconds. Your microTalk Professional Radio has a range up to 5 miles in GMRS. This effective range can be shortened under some conditions. To engage the Lock Function: microTalk Professional Range Note Call Button, Range Extender Button and Talk Button do not lock and are fully operational while the unit is locked. Note The unit cannot lock while in Function Mode. PRESS AND RELEASE Press and hold for one second Lock Button. If the Beep Function is ON you will hear an audible confirmation. Most buttons are locked. Key icon will flash. To “unlock” press and hold for one second Lock Button. If the Beep Function is ON you will hear an audible confirmation. Buttons are “unlocked.”There is no key icon visible. 18 Under flat, open conditions you will experience the microTalk Professional’s maximum range. When the PTT button is pushed the transmitter sends out RF signals. The device is authorized to operate at a transmit duty fac tor not exceed 5% using alkaline AA size batteries to comply with Federal Communications Commissions (FCC) RF exposure safety level guidelines for hand-held wireless devices. To maintain compliance with the FCC’s RF exposure guidelines hold the transceiver at least 2 inches (5 centimeters) from your face and speak in a normal voice, with the antenna pointed up and away. If you wear the transceiver on your body using the supplied belt clip, do not transmit with this device in the body worn configuration. Unauthorized antennas, modifications, or attachments could damage the transceiver and may violate FCC regulations. Normal Operating Position: Hold the transceiver approximately 2 inches to 3 inches from your face with the antenna pointed up and away.
