O P E R AT I O NSelecting a ChannelChannels 1-7 are shared with FRS/GMRS.Channels 8-14 are FRS only. Channels15-22 are GMRS only.1. With the radio on,select any of the22 channels bypushing theCHANNEL SELECTbutton up or down. (N O T E : Both radiosmust be tuned to the same channel to communicate.)Selecting a CTCSS Privacy CodeCTCSS (Continuous Tone Coded SquelchSystem) is an advanced tone coding systemallowing you to select one of 38 privacycodes to reduce interference from other userson the channel. (NOTE: If you are using aprivacy code, both radios must be tuned tothe same channel and privacy code tocommunicate. Each channel will remember the last privacy code you selected.)To select a privacy code:1. After selecting amain channel,press and releasethe MODE button.A small numberwill flash next to the channel in the LCD.2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up or down to select a privacy code. You can hold the button up or down for fast advance.3. When your desired privacy code is displayed, press and release the ENTER button.4. To return to Standby mode withoutselecting a privacy code, do not push any buttons for 15 seconds.Calling Another PersonTo alert another person that you are calling:1. Press and release the CALL button. Theother person will hear a 2-second ringingtone. Pull down the LOCK tab to remove thebattery compartment cover.2. Insert your NiMH batteries or four AAAbatteries. Position batteries according topolarity markings.(NOTE: NiMH batteries are included with your microTALK®radio. When not using your NiMH’s, always use high quality alkaline batteries. See page 16 for optional accessories.)Turning On Your microTALK®Radio1. Rotate the ON-OFF/VOLUME switchclockwise to turnon the unit (and to adjust the volume).An audible tonewill indicate theradio is on.2. Your microTALK®is now in Standby mode,ready to receive transmissions. The radio isalways in Standby mode except when theTALK, CALL, or MODE buttons are pressed.Battery LowBattery power isindicated by thesegments appearing at the bottom of theLCD. As battery powerdecreases, fewersegments will be visible. When the lastsegment begins to flash, the batteriesincluded with your radio should be rechargedor alkaline batteries should be replaced.Auto Battery SaveYour microTALK®radio has a unique circuitdesigned to extend battery life. If there areno transmissions within 10 seconds, the unitwill automatically switch to Battery Savemode and POWER SAVER will appear in thedisplay. O P E R AT I O NMaximum Range ExtenderYou can temporarilyturn off Auto Squelch,allowing all signals to be received and extending themaximum range of your radio:1. Press and hold the LIGHT/MAX RANGEbutton for 5 seconds. You will hear 2beeps indicating that Maximum RangeExtender is on.2. To turn Maximum Range Extender off,press and hold the LIGHT/MAX RANGEbutton for 1 second, or change channels.Using the Lock FunctionThe Lock function locks the CHANNEL, MODEand ENTER buttons to prevent accidentaloperation. To use the Lock function:1. While in Standbymode, press andhold the LOCKbutton for onesecond. The Lockicon will blinkwhen the unit islocked. Buttonsthat are NOTlocked are theCALL, LIGHT/MAX RANGE, and TALKbuttons, which are all fully functional while the unit is locked.2. To “unlock” buttons, press and release the LOCK button again. The Lock icon disappears and all buttons will be unlocked.External Speaker/Microphone JackYour microTALK®radio can be fitted with anexternal speaker/microphone, freeing yourhands for other tasks. (See page 16 foroptional accessories.)To attach an external speaker/microphone:1. Open the SPKR/MIC tab on top of the unit.2. Insert the plug into the SPKR/MIC jack.(CAUTION: Do not use an externalspeaker/microphone with common ground circuits with this radio. Damage can result. We recommend using onlyCobra®authorized accessories.)O P E R AT I O NENGLISH6Talking to Another Person1. Press and hold the TALK button.2. With themicrophone about2 inches (5 cm)from your mouth, speak in a normal voice.3. Release the button when you’re finishedtalking and listen for a response. You cannot receive incoming calls while pressing the TALK button.“Roger Beep” Confirmation ToneYour listener will hear an audible tone whenyou release the TALK button. This alerts theother party that you are finished talking and itis OK for them to speak. (NOTE: The RogerBeep can be turned off and on, see page 11.)Listening for a ResponseWhen you are finished talking:1 . Release the TALK button to receive incomingtransmissions. Your microTALK®is always in listening mode while the TALK button isnot pressed.2. Adjust the volume by rotating the ON-OFF/VOLUME switch.Illuminating the Display1. Press and release the LIGHT/MAX RANGEbutton to illuminate the display for 10 seconds.Auto SquelchYour microTALK®radio is equipped with AutoSquelch, which automatically shuts off weaktransmissions and unwanted noise due toterrain or conditions, or if you’ve reached your maximum range limit. Push the MODEbutton until theMemory icon and the memorylocation flashes.2. Select the memorylocation you wishto change bypushing theCHANNEL SELECTbutton up or down.3. Press and release the MODE button again.The Memory icon and the main channelnumber will flash.4. Select the main channel you wish to storeby pushing the CHANNEL SELECT button upor down.5. Press the MODEbutton again tostore the mainchannel in memoryand move toprivacy code selection. The privacy codenumber begins flashing and the Memoryicon continues to flash.6. Select the privacy code (0-38) you wish to store by pushing the CHANNELSELECT button up or down.7. Press the TALKbutton to transmiton your selectedchannel andprivacy code, which will be stored into the memorylocation you are using. (NOTE: To“unprogram” a memory location youprogrammed previously, select 00 for boththe main channel and privacy code insteps 4 and 6.)8. Press and release the ENTER button toreturn to Standby mode at your newmemory location, or press and release theMODE button tosave the memorylocation andproceed to otherfunctions.O P E R AT I O NENGLISH8Using the MODE buttonThe MODE button allows you to use andprogram the various functions of yourmicroTALK®radio. If you press and hold theMODE button, the LCD will cycle through thedifferent functions.Using VOX ModeIn VOX mode, your microTALK®can be used"hands-free," automatically transmitting whenyou speak. To turn VOX mode on and off:1. Press the MODE button until the VOX iconflashes and the current setting ("on" or"off") is displayed.2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown to turn VOX mode on or off.3. Press and release the ENTER button to enter the new setting, or press theMODE button to enter the new setting and proceed to other functions.Setting the VOX Sensitivity LevelYou can set the VOX sensitivity level to fit thevolume of your voice and avoid transmissionstriggered by background noise. To setthe sensitivity:1. Press the MODEbutton until the VOXicon flashes and thenumber for thecurrent sensitivitylevel is displayed next to the letter L (level 5 = mostsensitive, level 1 = least sensitive).2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown to change the setting.3. While in Standby mode, press theCHANNEL SELECT button up or down tochoose the main channel you wish to scan.2. Press the MODEbutton until theScan icon and theprivacy codenumber flashes.3. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown and the unit will begin scanningprivacy codes within the main channel you selected.4. The radio will continue to scan privacycodes and stop if an incoming transmissionis detected. The unit will remain on thatcode for 10 seconds. During that time you can: a) Press and hold the TALK button and talk.The radio will remain on that channel andprivacy code, then re t u rn to Standby mode.b) Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up or down to resume scanning privacy codes. c) Press the MODE button to proceed tomemory location scanning (see below).If you do not press any button within 10 seconds, the radio will automaticallyresume scanning privacy codes.To scan memory locations:1. Press the MODE button until the Scan icon, Memory Location icon and memorylocation number flashes.2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown and the unit will begin scanningmemory locations.3. The radio will continue to scan all memorylocations and stop if an incomingtransmission is detected. The unit willremain on that location for 10 seconds.During that time you can:a) Press and hold the TALK button and talk. The radio will remain on that memorylocation channeland return toStandby mode.10Recalling Memory LocationsTo recall a channel you have stored in amemory location:1. Press the MODE button until the Memoryicon and a memory location flashes.2. Select yourdesired memorylocation bypushing theCHANNEL SELECTbutton up or down. Your radiowill stay at thismemory locationuntil you exitMemory Functionmode by pressing the ENTER button.3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to recall othermemory locations.Using the Scan FunctionYour microTALK®radio can automatically scan main channels (1-22), the privacy codes (0-38) within one main channel, or memory locations.To scan main channels:1. Press the MODE button until the Scan iconand main channel number flashes.2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown and the unit will begin scanning themain channels. (N O T E : The unit “ignore s ”privacy codes while scanning main channels.)3. The radio will continue to scan all mainchannels and stop if an incomingtransmission is detected. The unit willremain on that channel for 10 seconds.During that time you can:a) Press and holdthe TALK buttonand talk. See Programming MemoryLocations, page 8.)Turning Roger Beep Off and OnWith Roger Beep turned on, your listener will hear an audible tone when you releasethe TALK button. To change Roger Beep mode:1. Press the MODE button until the RogerBeep icon flashes and the current setting (“on” or “off”) is displayed.2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown to turn Roger Beep on or off.3. To enter the newsetting you canpress and releasethe ENTERbutton,or press the MODEbutton to enter the new setting andproceed to other functions.Turning Keystroke Tones Offand OnWith Keystroke Tones turned on, your unit willsound beeps each time you press a button orchange a setting. To change Keystroke Tones:1. Press and hold the ENTER button for 5 seconds to turn k e y s t ro k et o n e so ff. Adouble beep will sound and the Beep iconwill disappear.2. To turn keystroke tones back on, press andhold the ENTER button for 5 seconds again.A single beep will sound and the Beep iconwill appear.(N O T E : The unit must not bein Lock mode during these steps.) Press the MODE button until the RingSetting icon flashes and the current setting(Vibra + Ring, Vibra Only, or Ring Only) isdisplayed.2. Push the CHANNELSELECT button upor down to changethe ring setting.3. Press and releasethe ENTER button to enter the new setting,or press the MODE button to enter the newsetting and proceed to other functions.Changing Call Tone SettingsYou can choose between ten different calltone settings to transmit a unique call alert. To select a call tone setting:1. With the power turned off, press and holdthe CALL button as you turn the power on. The number ofthe current calltone setting willflash and the tone will sound for one second.2. Push the CHANNEL SELECT button up ordown to hear the other call tone settings.3. With the number of your desired call tone setting displayed, press and releasethe TALK button or ENTER button. Yourselection will be entered.4.
