only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in
the outlet, reverse the plug. If It atlll does not
fit, contact a qualified electrician to Install a
polarized outlet. Do not change the plug In
any way. Double insulation [] eliminates the
need for the three wire grounded power cord and
grounded power supply system.
•Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces
such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refdgera-
tore. There is an increased risk of electric shock
if your body is grounded.
• Don't expose power tools to rain or wet condi-
tions. Water entedng a power tool will increase
the dsk of electdc shock.
Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to
carry the tools or pull the plug from an outlet.
Keep cord away from heat, o11,sharp edges or
moving parts. Replace damaged cords Imme-
dlafely. Damaged cords increase the risk of
electdc shock.
•When operating a power tool outside, use an
outdoor extension cord marked "W-A" or "W".
These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce
the risk of electdc shock.
Personal Safety
•Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use
common sense when operating a power tool

jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your hair,
clothing, and gloves away from moving parts,
Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught
in moving parts.
•Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch Is
off before plugging In. Carrying tools with your
finger on the switch or plugging in tools that have
the switch on invites accidents.
2
•Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before
turning the tool on. A wrench or a key that is left
attached to a rotating part of the tool may result
in personal injury.
•Do not overreach. Keep proper footing end
balance at ell tlmee. Proper footing and balance

end support the workplece to a stable plat-
form. Holding the work by hand or against your
body is unstable and may lead to loss of control.
• Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for
your application. The correct tool will do the job
better and safer at the rate for which it is de-
signed.
•Do not usa tool if switch does not turn It on or
(_)ff.Any tool that cannot be Controlled with the
S_'itch is dangerous and must be repaired.
•Disconnect the plug from the power source
before meldng any edJuatments, changing
accessories, or atorlng the tool. Such preven-
tive safety measures redUce risk of starting the
tool accidentally.
•Store Idle tools out of reach of children end
other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous
in the hands of untrained users.
•Maintain tools with care. Keep cuffing tools
sharp and clean. Pmpedy maintained tools, with :
sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are
easier to control.
•Check for mlsallgnment or binding of moving
parts, breakage of parts, and any other oondi-
tion that may affect the tools operstlon. If
damaged, have the tool serviced before using.
Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained
tools.

Do not force. The weight of the unitsupplies adequate
pressure, so let the sandpaper and sander do the work.
Applyingadditional pressureonly slowsthe motor,rapidly
wears sandpaper and greatly reduces sander speed.
Excessive pressurewill overloadthe motorcausing
possibledamage from motor overheatingand can resultin
infedor work.Any finishor resin on wood may softenfrom
the frictionalheat. Do notallow sanding on one spottoo
longas the sander's rapidaction may removetoo much
material, making the surface uneven.
SANDPAPERSELECTION
selectingthecorrectsizegdtandtypesandpaperisan
extremelyimportantstep in achievinga high quality
sanded finish.Aluminumoxide, siliconcarbide, and other
syntheticabrasivesare best for power sanding.Natural
abrasives, such as flint and garnet are too soft for eco-
nomicaluse in power sanding.
In general, coarse gdt will remove the most material and .
finer grit will producethe best finishin allsanding opera-
fions. The condition of the surfaceto be sanded will
determinewhich gdt will do the job. If the surface is rough,
start witha coarse grit and sand untilthe surface is
uniform.Medium grit may then be used to remove
scratchesleft by the coarser grit and finer gdt used for
finishingof the surface.Always continue sandingwith
each grit untilsurface is uniform.
Note: Do not use sander withoutsandpaper. Doing so
will damage the cushion.
,_ WARNING: Do notwear loose clothingor jewelry
,whenoperatingsander. They could get caught in
moving partscausing sedous injury.Keep head away
fromsander and sanding area. Hair could be drawn
intosander causingserious injury.
ORBITAL MOTION
See Figure 8.
Orbitalmotionis ideal for fastcuttingactionwhen
removingold finishes,smoothingroughwood, cutting
stock downto requireddimensions,or for finishing
surfacesto be painted. As shown in figureB. the
sandpaper moves intiny circlesat avery highspeed,
allowingthe sander to move easily.

Flush sanding can be performedwith your sander. See
Figure 9. Every sideexcept the rear of your sander allows
flush sanding in comers. Always removesander from
workplecebefore turningyour sander off. .ha
Fig.9
REMOVING SANDPAPER BEFORE STORAGE
Do notstore your sander withpressure sensitiveadhesive
sandpaper installed.Heat generated fromsanding causes
the pressuresensitive adhesive to flow and form a tight
bend betweenthe cushionand sandpaper.
Removingthe sandpaper soon after you have finisheda
sanding operationavoids lettingthe adhesive set up. If the
sandpaper Is left on the cushionfor an extended pedodof
time after use, the adhesive will set up and cause the
sandpaper to become difficultto remove.
It may also tear when removing. When this situation
occurs,It becomesdifficultto clean the cushionfor the
next pieceof sandpaper.
Note: If you forget to remove the sandpaper after a
sanding operation, sandfor a few minutesto softenthe
adhesive backingbefore attempting to remove sandpaper.

it has been found that electrictoolsare subjectto
accelerated wear and possibleprematurefailure when
they are used on fiberglassboats, sportscars, wallboard,
spacklingcompounds, or piaster. The chips and gdndings
fromthese matedais are highlyabrasive to electrictool
pads such as beadngs, brushes, commutators, etc.
Consequently, it is not recommendedthat thistool be
usedfor extended workon any fiberglassmaterial,
wallboard, spacklingcompounds, or plaster. Dudng any
use on these materials it is extremelyimportantthat the
tool is cleaned frequentlyby blowingwith an air jet.
EXTENSION CORDS
The use of any extensioncord willcause some lossof
power. To keep the lossto a minimumand to preventtool
from overheating, use an extensioncord that is heavy
enough to carry the current the tool will draw.
A wire gage size (A.W.G,) of at least 16 is recommended
for an extensioncord 100 feet or less in length. When
workingoutdoors, use an extensioncord that is suitable
for outdooruse. The cord'sjacket willbe markedWA.
_l CAUTION: Keep extensioncords away fromthe
sanding area and positionthe cord so that it will not
get caught on lumber, tools, etc., duringsanding.
