Regular users should have hearing checked regularly as chain saw noise can damage hearing. Secure hair above shoulder length. Keep all parts of your body away from the chain when the engine is running, Keep children, bystanders, and animals at least 30 feet (10 meters) away from the work area when starting and using the saw. Do not handle or operate a chain saw when you are fatigued, ill, or upset, or if you have taken alcohol, drugs, or medication. You must be in good physical condition and mentally alert. If you have any condition that might be aggravated by strenuous work, check with doctor before operating. Do not start cutting until you have a clear work area, secure footing, and especially if you are felling a tree, a retreat path. OPERATE YOUR SAWSAFELY • Do not operate with one hand. Serious injury to the operator, helpers, or bystanders may result from onehanded operation. A chain saw is intended for two-handed use, • Operate the chain saw only in a weltventilated outdoor area. • Do not operate saw from a ladder or in a tree, unless you are specifically trained to do so. • Make sure the chain will not make contact with any object while starting the engine. Never try to start the saw when the guide bar is in a cut. • Do not put pressure on the saw, especially at the end of the cut. Doing so can cause you to lose control when the cut is completed, • Stop engine before setting saw down. • Hand carry saw only when engine is stopped. Carry with muffler away from body; guide bar & chain projecting behind you; guide bar preferably covered with a scabbard. MAINTAIN YOUR SAW tN GOOD WORKING ORDER • Have all chain saw service performed by a Sears Service Center except the items listed in the maintenance section of this manual. • Make certain the saw chain stops moving when the throttle trigger is released. For correction, refer to CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS. • Keep the handles dry, clean, and free from oil or fuet mixture. • Keep caps and fasteners securely tightened. • Use only Craftsman accessories and replacement parts as recommended. Never modify your saw. HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION • Do not smoke while handling fuel or while operating the saw. • Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in areas where fuel is mixed or poured. • Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area and use an approved, marked container for all fuet purposes. Wipe up all fueI spills before starting saw. • Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) from fueling site before starting. • Turn the engine off and let saw coot in a non-combustible area, not on dry leaves, straw, paper, etc. SIowty remove fuel cap and refuel unit. • Store the unit and fuel in a coot, dry well ventilated space where fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or open flames from water heaters, electric motors or switches, furnaces, etc. GUARD AGAINST KICKBACK Follow alt safety ruIes to help avoid kickback and other forces which can result in serious injury, Kickback Path Clear The Working Area _.WARNING: RotationaI Kickback can occur when the moving chain contacts an object at the upper portion of the tip of the guide bar. Contact at the upper portion of the tip of the guide bar can cause the chain to dig into the object, which stops the chain for an instant. The result is a lightning fast, reverse reaction which kicks the guide bar up and back toward the operator. Pinch-Kickback and Pull-In occur when the chain is suddenly stopped by being pinched, caught, or by contacting a foreign object in the wood. This sudden stopping of the chain results in a reversal of the chain force used to cut wood and causes the saw to move in the opposite direction of the chain rotation. Pinch-Kickback drives the saw straight back toward the operator. Putt-In pulls the saw away from the operator. REDUCE THE CHANCE OF KICKBACK • Recognize that kickback can happen. With a basic understanding of kickback, you can reduce the element of surprise which contributes to accidents. • Never let the moving chain contact • any object at the tip of the guide bar. Keep working area free from obstructions such as other trees, branches, rocks, fences, stumps, etc. Eliminate or avoid any obstruction that your saw chain could hit while cutting. • Keep sawchain sharp andproperly Keep your left arm straight with the tensioned. Avoid Pull-In: • Always begin cutting with the engine at full speed and the saw housing against wood. • Use wedges made of plastic or wood. Never use metal to hold the cut open. MAINTAIN CONTROL Stand to the left of the saw underside Thumb on reduce hazard of kickback; however, such features will not totally eliminate this danger. Do not rely only on safety devices. • Handguard: designed to reduce the chance of your left hand contacting the chain if your hand slips off the front handlebar. • Position of front and rear handlebars: designed with distance between handles and "in-tine" with each other. The spread and "in-line" position of the hands provided by this design work together to give balance and resistance in controlling the pivot of the saw back toward the operator if kickback occurs. • Reduced-Kickback Guide Bar: designed with a small radius tip which reduces the size of the kickback danger zone. This type bar has been demonstrated to significantly reduce the number and seriousness of kickbacks when tested in accordance with ANSI B175.1. i! locked Never reverse hand positions • A good, firm grip on the saw with both hands will help you maintain control. Don't let go. Grip the rear handle with your right hand whether you are right or left handed. Wrap the fingers of your left hand over and around the front handlebar, and your left thumb under the front handlebar. • Low-Kickback Chain: has met kick- backperformance requirements when testedon a representative sample of chain saws below 3.8 cubic inch displacement specified in ANSI Bt751. GUIDE BAR AND CHAIN OIL The chain oiler provides continuous lubrication to the chain and guide bar. Be sure to flit the bar oil tank when you filt the fuet tank (Capacity = 8.8 fI. oz.). For maximum guide bar and chain life, we recommend you use Craftsman chain saw bar oil. If Craftsman bar oi_ is not available, you may use a good grade SAE 30 oit unti_ you are abie to obtain Craftsman brand. The oil output is automatically metered during operation. Your saw will use approximately one tank of bar oil for every tank of fuei mix. Always fill the bar oi_ tank when you fill the fuet tank. FUELING ENGINE This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasotine must be mixed with a good quaIity 2-cycIe air-cooled engine oil. We recommend Craftsman brand oil. Mix gasoline and oil at a ratio of 40:1 (A 40:1 ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2 ounces of oil with 1 gab}on of unleaded gasoline). DO NOT USE automotive oil or boat oil These oits will cause engine damage. When mixing fuel follow the instructions printed on the container. Once oit is added to the gasoline, shake container momentarily to assure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed. Always read and follow the safety rules relating to fuel before fueting your unit. IMPORTANT Experience indicates that alcohoI blended fuets (catled gasohoI or using ethanot or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, the rue} system should be emptied before storage for 30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the engine and let it run until the fue_ Iines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel next season. See STORAGE instructions for additional information. Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur. See the STORAGE section for additional information. STOPPING YOUR ENGINE • Move ON/STOP switch to STOP. STARTING YOUR ENGINE _i' WARNING: The chain must not move when the engine runs at idle speed, tf the chain moves at idIe speed, refer to CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENTS within this manual Avoid contact with the muffler. A hot muffler can cause serious burns. • To start the engine, hold the saw firmly on the ground as ittustrated. Make sure the chain is free to turn without contacting any object. Starter Rope Handle Right Foot Through Rear Handle Important pointe to remember When using the starter rope, do not use the futt extent of the rope as this can cause the rope to break. DIFFICULT STARTING OR STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE The engine may be flooded if it has not started after 10 pulls. Flooded engines can be cleared of excess fuet by following the warm engine starting procedure tisted above. Insure the ignition switch is in the QN position. Starting could require many putts depending on how badly unit is flooded. If engine faits to start, refer to the TROUBLESHOOTING CHART or call 1-800-235-5878. OPERATING TIPS • Check chain tension before first use and after 1 minute of operation. See CHAIN TENS}ON in the MAINTENANCE section. • Cut wood only. Do not cut metal, p}astics, masonry, non-wood building materials, etc. • Stop the saw if the chain strikes a foreign object. Inspect the saw and repair parts as necessary. • Keep the chain out of dirt and sand. Even a small amount of dirt will quickly dull a chain and increase the possibility of kickback. • Stop engine before setting saw down. TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES ti _____.__ IlllWARNING: Check for broken or dead branches which can fail while cutting causing serious injury. Do not cut near buildings or etectrica} wires if you do not know the direction of tree fall, nor cut at night since you wilt not be able to see wett, nor during bad weather such as rain, snow, or strong winds, etc. • Carefully pian your sawing operation in advance. • Clear the work area. You need a clear area att around the tree so you can have secure footing. • Study the natura_ conditions that can cause the tree to fall in a particular direction. These conditions include: • The wind direction and speed. • The Iean of the tree. The lean of a tree might not be apparent due to uneven or stoping terrain. Use a plumb or level to determine the direction of tree lean. • Weight and branches on one side. • Surrounding trees and obstacles. • Look for decay and rot. If the trunk is rotted, it can snap and fatt toward the operator. • Make sure there is enough room for the tree to fail Maintain a distance of 2-1/2 tree iengths from the nearest person or other objects. Engine noise can drown out a warning call • Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, staples, andwirefromthetree where cutsaretobemade. -- _ )_ { Plan aclear retreat path I I t I _,_ Direction of Fall 2;" 45 ._ FELLING LARGE TREES (6 inches in diameter or larger) The notch method is used to fett targe trees. A notch is cut on the side of the tree in the desired direction of fail. After a felling cut is made on the opposite side of tree, the tree will tend to fall in the direction of the notch. NOTE: If tree has large buttress roots, remove them before making the notch. NOTCH CUT AND FELLING TREE • Make notch cut by cutting the top of the notch first. Cut through t/3 of the diameter of the tree. Next comptete the notch by cutting the bottom. See illustration. Once the notch is cut, remove the wedge of wood from tree. FinaI cut here First cut Notch - Second cul Hinge • After removing the wood, make the felling cut on the opposite side of the notch. This is done by making a cut about two inches higher than the center of the notch. This will leave enough uncut wood between the felling cut and the notch to form a hinge. This hinge wilt help prevent the tree from falIing in the wrong direction, Hinge holds tree on stump and he}ps control fa_l Opening of felling cut Closing of notch NOTE: Before felling cut is complete, use wedges to open the cut when necessary to control the direction of fall. To avoid kickback and chain damage, use wood or plastic wedges, but never steet or iron wedges. • Be alert to signs that the tree is ready to falt: cracking sounds, widening of the fetiing cut, or movement in the upper branches. • As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put it down, and get away quickty on your planned retreat path. • Be extremely cautious with partially faIien trees that may be poorly supported. When a tree doesn't fall completeIy, set the saw aside and putt down the tree with a cable winch, block and tackle, or tractor. Do not use your saw to cut down a partially fatten tree. CUTTING A FALLEN TREE (BUCKING) Bucking is the term used for cutting a fallen tree to the desired tog size. ,_t, WARNING: Do not stand on the log being cut. Any portion can rott causing toss of footing and control. Do not stand downhill of the log being cut. IMPORTANT POINTS • Cut only one log at a time. • Cut shattered wood very carefully; sharp pieces of wood could be flung toward operator. • Use a sawhorse to cut small logs. Never allow another person to hold the log while cutting and never hold the log with your leg or foot. • Do not cut in an area where Iogs, limbs, and roots are tangled. Drag logs into a clear area before cutting them. BUCKING TECHNIQUES _t, WARNING: If saw becomes pinched or hung in a log. don't try to force it out, You can lose control of the saw resulting in injury and/or damage to the saw. Stop the saw. drive a wedge of plastic or wood into the cut until the saw can be removed easily. Restart saw and carefully reenter the cut, Do not use a metal wedge. CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT Zt dl_ WARNING: The chain will be moving during most of this procedure. Wear your protective equipment and observe all safety precautions. During the low speed mixture adjustment recheck idle speed after each turn of the screw. The chain must not move at idle speed. Carburetor adjustment is critical and if done improperly can permanently damage the engine as welt as the carburetor. If you require further assistance or are unsure about performing this procedure, caIt our customer assistance help line at 1-800-235-5878. Old fuel, a dirty air filter, dirty fueI filter, or flooding may give the impression of an improperly adjusted carburetor. Check these conditions before adjusting the carburetor. The carburetor has been carefully set at the factory. Adjustments may be necessary if you notice any of the following conditions: • Chain moves at idle. See IDLE SPEED under adjusting procedure. • Saw witt not idle. See iDLE SPEED-T and LOW SPEED MIXTURE-L under adjusting procedure. • Engine dies or hesitates when it should accelerate. See ACCELERA- CARBURETOR PRESETS When making adjustments, do not force the plastic limiter caps beyond the stops or damage will occur. If carburetor presets are not needed, proceed to IDLE SPEED-q_ • Turn both mixture screws counterclockwise untit they stop. • Turn the idle speed screw clockwise until it stops. Now turn counterclockwise 4-1/2 futt turns. Start motor, let it run for 3 minutes, and proceed to the adjustment section. If engine does not start, refer to the TROUBLESHOOTING CHART or catt 1-800-235-5878. tf engine performance is acceptable at the preset positions and there is no chain movement at idle, no further adjustment is necessary. ADJUSTING PROCEDURE Idle Speed-T Allow engine to idle. Adjust speed until engine runs without chain movement or stalling. • Turn clockwise to increase engine speed if engine stalls or dies. • Turn counterclockwise to decrease speed. No further adjustments are necessary if chain does not move at idle speed and if performance is satisfactory, Low Speed Mixture-L Allow engine to idle. Then accelerate the engine and note performance. If engine hesitates, bogs down, or smokes during acceleration, turn mixture screw clockwise in t/16-turn increments untii performance is satisfactory. Repeat this procedure as necessary for proper adjustment. After completing adjustments, check for acceleration and chain movement at idle. Reset if necessary.
