For one year from the date of purchase, when this Craftsman Gas Powered

Weedwacker Line Tdmmer is maintained, lubricated, and tuned up according to

the operating and maintenance instructions in the Operator's Manual, Sears will

repair, free of charge, any defect in materials or workmanship.

This warranty excludes nylon line, spar plug, and air filter, which are expendable

parts and become worn during normal use.

If this Weedwacker line tdmmer is used for commercial purposes, this warranty ap-

plies for only 90 days from the date of purchase. If this Weedwacker line trimmer is

used for rental purposes, this warranty applies for only 30 clays from the date of pur-

chase. This warranty applies only while this product is in use in the United States.

OPERATORSAFETY

•Dress propedy. Always wear safety

glasses or similar eye protection

when operating, or performing main-

tenance, on your unit (safety

.91asses ere available). Eye protec-

tion should be marked Z87.

•Always wear face or dust mask if op-

eration is dusty.

• Always wear heavy, long pants, long

sleeves, boots, and gloves. Wear-

ing safety leg guards is recom-

mended.

•Always wear foot protection. Do not

go barefoot or wear sandals. Stay

• clear of spinning line.

Secure hair above shoulder length.

Secure or remove loose clothing or

clothing with loosely hanging ties,

straps, tassels, etc. They can be

caught in moving parts.

•Being fully covered also helps pro-

tect you from debris and pieces of

toxic plants thrown by spinning line.

• Stay Alert. Do not operate this unit

when you are tired, ill, upset or un-

der the influence of alcohol, drugs,

or medication. Watch what you are

•doing; use common sense.

Wear hearing protection.

•Never start or run inside a closed

room or building. Breathing exhaust

fumes can kill.

•Keep handles free of oil and fuel.

UNIT /MAINTENANCE SAFETY

•Disconnect the spark plug before

_erforming maintenance except car-

uretor adjustments.

•Look for and replace damaged or

loose parts before each use. Look

for and repair fuel leaks before use.

Keep in good working condition.

•Replace trimmer head parts that are

chipped, cracked, broken, or dam-

aged in any other way before using

the unit.

•Maintain unit according to recom-

mended procedures. Keep cutting

line at proper length.

•Use only 0.080 in.(2 mm) diameter

Craftsman® brand line. Never use

• wire, rope, string, etc.

Install required shield propedy be-

fore using the unit. Use only speci-

fied tdmmer head; make sure it is

properly installed and securely fas-

tened.

• Make sure unit is assembled cor-

rectly as shown in this manual.

• Make carburetor adjustments with

lower end supported to prevent line

from contacting any object.

•Keep others away when making car-

buretor adjustments.

• Use only recommended Craftsman

accessories and replacement parts.

•Have all maintenance and service

not explained in this manual per-

formed by a Sears Service Center.

FUEL SAFELY

•Mix and pour fuel outdoors.

iKeep away from sparks or flames.

Use a container approved for fuel.

Do not smoke or allow smoking near

fuel or the unit.

•Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up all

fuel spills.

•Move at least 10 feet (3 meters)

away from fueling site before start-

ing engine.

•Stop engine and allow to cool before

removing fuel cap.

•Always store gasoline in a container

approved for flammable liquids.

CU'II"ING SAFETY

_WARNING: Inspect the area be-

fore each use. Remove objects

(rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, etc.)

which can be thrown by or become

entangled in line. Hard objects can

damage the trimmer head and be

thrown causing serious injury.

iUse only for tdmming, scalping, mow-

ing and sweeping. Do not use for edg-

ing, pruning or hedge tdmming.

Keep firm footing and balance. Do

not overreach.

• Keep all parts of your body away

from muffler and spinning line. Keep

engine below waist level. Ahot mut-

fief can cause serious bums.

•Cut from your right to your left. Cut-

ting on left side of the shield will

throw debris away from the operator.

•Use only in daylight or good artificial

light.

•Use only for jobs explained in this

manual.

TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE

•Allow engine to cool; secure unit be-

fore storing or transporting in ve-

hicle.

•Empty the fuel tank before storing or

transporting the unit. Use up fuel left

in the carburetor by starting the en-

gine and letting it run until it stops.

•Store unit and fuel in area where

fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or

open flames from water heaters,

electric motors or switches, fur-

naces, etc.

•Store unit so line limiter blade can-

not accidentally cause injury. The

unit can be hung by the tube.

•Store unit out of reach of children.

SAFETY NOTICE: Exposure to vibra-

t!onsthrough prolonged use ofgaso-

hne powered hand tools could cause

blood vessel or nerve damage in the

fingers, hands, and joints of people

prone to circulation disorders or ab-

normal swellings. Prolonged use in

coldweather has been linked to blood

vessel damage in otherwise healthy

people. If symptoms occur such as

numbness, pare, lossof strength,

change in skin color or texture, or loss

offeeling in the fingers, hands, or

joints, discontinue the use of this tool

and seek medical attention. An anti-

vibration system does not guarantee

the avoidance of these problems. Us-

ers who operate power tools on a con-

tinual and regular basis must monitor

closely their physical conditionand

the condition of this tool.

SPECIAL NOTICE: This unit is

equipped with a temperature limiting

muffler and spark arresting screen

which meets the requirements of Cali-

fornia Codes 4442 and 4443. All U.S.

forest land and the states of California,

Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey,

Oregon, and Washington require by

law that many intemal combustion en-

gines be equipped with a spark arrest-

ing screen. If you operate in a locale

where such regulationsexist, you are

legally responsible for maintaining the

operating condition ofthese parts.

Failure to do so is a violation of the

law. For normal homeowner use, the

muffler and spark arresting screen will

not require any service. After 50

hours of use, we recommend that your

muffler be serviced or replaced by

your Sears Service Center.

It is normal for the fuel filter to rattle in

the empty fuel tank.

Finding fuel or oil residue on muffler is

normal due to carburetor adjustments

and testing done by the manufacturer.

ASSEMBLY

dli WARNING: If received as-

sembled, repeat all steps to ensure

your unit is properly assembled and all

fasteners are secure.

Be sure to attach the assist handle to

the unit before you attach the shield.

ATTACHING THE HANDLE

(some units are already assembled)

1. Assemble handle to the unit as

shown; make sure bottom of handle

is seated in the groove in the trigger

housing.

NOTE: Knob must be assembled on

the right hand side of the unit as

shown in the illustration.

2. Make sure the bolt is seated in the

hex-shaped hole in the handle.

3. Pivot the handle to a comfortable

position.

4. "13ghtenknob securely.

ATTACHING SHIELD

_IL WARNING: The shield must be

properly installed. The shield provides

partial protection from the risk of thrown

objects to the operator and others and

is equipped with a line limiter blade

which cuts excess line to the proper

length. The line limiter blade (on under-

side of shield) is sharp and can cut you.

1. Remove wing nut from shield.

2. Insert bracket into slot as shown.

3. Pivot shield until bolt passes

through hole in bracket.

4. Securely tighten wing nut onto

bolt.

ON/OFF SWITCH

The ON/OFF switch is used to stop en-

gine. Move switch to the OFF position to

stop engine.

PRIMER BULB

The PRIMER BULB removes air from

the carburetor and fuel lines and fills

them with fuel. This allows you to start

the engine with fewer pulls on the

starter rope. Activate the primer bulb

by pressing it and allowing it to return

to its original form.

CHOKE

The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to the

engine to aid in cold starting. Activate

the choke by moving the choke lever to

the FULL CHOKE posiUon. After the en-

_ne attempts to start, move the choke

lever to the HALF CHOKE position. Once

engine has started, move the choke le-

ver to the OFF CHOKE position.

EDGE GUIDE

The EDGE GUIDE protects the unit from

contacting the ground during edging.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

WARNING: Be sure to read

the fuel information in the safety rules

before you begin. If you do not

understand the safety rules, do not

attempt to fuel your unit. Call

1-800-235-5878.

FUELING ENGINE

_k, WARNING: Remove fuel cap

slowly when refueling.

This engine is certified to operate on

unleaded gasoline. Before operation,

gasoline must be mixed with a good

quality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooled

engine oil. We recommend Craftsman

brandsyntheticoil.Mixgasolineand

oil at a ratioof 40:1(,6,40:1ratio is

obtainedbymixing3.2ouncesof oil

with1gallonof unleaded_.asoline).

DO NOT USE automotive od or boat oil.

These oils will cause engine damage.

When mixing fuel, follow instructions

printed on container.

Once oil is added to gasoline, shake

container momentarily to assure that

the fuel is thoroughly m=xed.Always

read and follow the safety rules

relating to fuel before fueling your unit.

IMPORTANT

Experience indicates that alcohol

blended fuels (called gasohol or using

ethanol or methanol) can attract mois-

ture which leads to separation and

formation of acids during storage.

Acidic gas can damage the fuel sys-

tem of an engine while in storage.

To avoid engine problems, empty the

fuel systembefore storage for 30 days

or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the

engine and let it run until the fuel lines

and carburetor are empty. Use fresh

fuel next season.

Never use engine or carburetor clean-

er products in the fuel tank or perma-

nent damage may occur.

See the STORAGE section for addition-

al information.

HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT

•To stop the engine, move the ON/

OFF switch to the OFF position.

•If engine does not stop, move choke

to the FULL CHOKE position.

Avoid any contact with the muffler.A

hot muffler can cause serious burns.

STARTING A COLD ENGINE (or a

warm engine after running out of

fuel)

1. Set unit on a flat surface.

2. Move ON/OFF switch to the ON

position.

3. Slowly press the primer bulb 6

times.

4. Move choke lever to FULL CHOKE

position.

5. Squeeze the throttle tdgger fully and

hold through all remaining steps.

6. Pull starter rope handle sharply

until engine sounds as it if is trying

to start, but do not pull rope more

than 6 times.

7. As soon as engine sounds as if it

is trying to start, move choke lever

to the HALF CHOKE position.

8. Pull starter rope sharply until engine

runs, but no more than 6 pulls.

NOTE: If the engine doesn't start

after 6 pulls (at the HALF CHOKE

position), move the choke lever to

the FULL CHOKE position and press

the primer bulb 6 times. Squeeze

and hold the throttle tdg.ger and pull

the starter rope 2 more times. Move

the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE

position and pull the starter rope un-

til the engine runs, but no more than

6 pulls. If the engine still doesn't

start, it is probably flooded. Proceed

to STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE.

9. Once the engine starts, allow it to

run 10 seconds, then move the

choke lever to the OFF CHOKE

position. Allow the unit to run for

30 more seconds at OFF CHOKE

before releasing the throttle trigger.

NOTE: If engine dies with the

choke lever in the OFF CHOKE

position, move the choke lever to

the HALF CHOKE position and pull

the rope until engine runs, but no

more than 6 pulls.

STARTING A WARM ENGINE

1. Move ON/OFF switCh to the ON posi-

tion.

2. Move the choke lever to the HALF

CHOKE position.

3. Squeeze and hold the throttle trig-

ger. Keep throttle trigger fully

squeezed until the engine runs

smoothly.

4. Pull starter rope sharply until engine

runs, but no more than 5 pulls.

5. Allow engine to run 15 seconds,

then move the choke lever to the

OFF CHOKE position.

NOTE: If engine has not started, pull

starter rope 5 more pulls. If engine still

does not run, it is probably flooded.

STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE

Flooded engines can be started by

placing the choke lever in the OFF

CHOKE position; then, pull the rope to

clear the engine of excess fuel. This

could require pulling the starter handle

many times depending on how badly

the unit is flooded.

If the unit still doesn't start, refer to

TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call

1-800-235-5878.

It is recommended that the engine

not be operated for longer than 1

minute at full throttle.

To stop engine:

• Release the throttletrigger.

TWIST AND EDGE

The Twist and Edge feature allows for

easy edging of sidewalks, patios,

driveways, etc.

1. Pull the tab toward the engine.

2. Twist the tube to the edging posi-

tion; release tab.

TRIMMER LINE ADVANCE

The trimmer line will advance approxi-

mately 2 In. (5 cm) each time the bot-

tom of the trimmer head is tapped on

the groundwith the engine runningat

full throttle.The most efficient line

length is the maximum length allowed

by the line ,miter.

Always keep the shield in place when

the tool is being operated.

To advance line:

• Operate the engine at fullthrottle.

Hold the trimmerhead parallelto and

above the grassy area.

• Tap the bottomof the trimmerhead

lightlyon the groundone time. Ap-

proximately21n. (5 cm) of line will be

advanced witheaChtap.

_IL WARNING: Always wear eye

protection. Never lean over the trim-

mer head. Rocks or debris can rico-

chet or be thrown into eyes and face

and cause blindness or other serious

injury.

Do not run the engine at a higher

speed than necessary. The cutting

line will cut efficiently when the engine

is run at less than full throttle. At lower

speeds, there is less engine noise and

vibration. The cutting line will last

longer and will be less likely to '_Neld"

onto the spool.

Always tap the trimmer head on a

grassy area. Tapping on surfaces such

as concrete or asphalt can cause ex-

cessive wear to the trimmer head.

If the line is worn down to 2 in. (5 cm) or

less, more than one tap will be required

to obtain the most efficient line length.

(2 mm) diameter line. Other sizes of

line will not advance properly and can

cause serious injury. Do not use other

materials such as wire, string, rope,

etc. Wire can break offduring cutting

and become a dangerous missile that

can cause serious injury.

CU'I'rlNG METHODS

Use minimum speed and do not

crowd the hne when cutting around

hard objects (rock, gravel, fence

posts, etc.), which can damage the

trimmer head, become entangled in

the line, or be thrown causing a seri-

ous hazard.

•The tip of the line does the cutting.

You will achieve the best performance

and minimum line wear by not crowd-

ing the line into the cutting area. The

right and wrong ways are shown be-

low.

SCALPING -The scalping technique

removes unwanted vegetation down

to the ground. Hold the bottom of the

trimmer head about 3 in. (8 cm) above

the ground and at an angle. Allow the

tip of the line to strike the ground

around trees, posts, monuments, etc.

This technique increases line wear.

MOWING -Your trimmer is ideal for

mowing in places conventional lawn

mowers cannot reach. In the mowing

position, keep the line parallel to the

ground. Avoid pressing the head into

•The line will easily remove grass and ._,_L_ f.

weeds from around walls, fences,

trees and flower beds, but it also can

cut the tender bark of trees or shrubs

and scar fences. To help avoid dam-

age especially to delicate vegetation

or trees with tender bark, shorten line

to4-5 in. (10-13 cm) and use at less

than full throttle.

•For trimming or scalping, use less

than full throttle to increase line life

and decrease head wear, espsclally:

During light duty cutting.

Near objects around which the line

can wrap such as small posts,

trees or fence wire.

•For mowing or sweeping, use full

throttle for a good clean job.

TRIMMING -Hold the bottom of the

trimmer head about 3 in. (8 cm) above

the ground and at an angle. Allow only

the tip of the line to make contact. Do

not force trimmer line into work area.

SWEEPING - The fanning action of

the rotating line can be used for a

quick and easy clean up. Keep the

line parallel to and above the surfaces

being swept and move the tool from

side to side.

EDGING -Adjust trimmer to the edg-

ing position (see TWIST AND EDGE

section). Allow only the tip of the line

to make contact. Do not force trimmer

line into work area.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The warranty on this unit does not

cover items that have been subjected

to operator abuse or negligence. To

receive full value from the warranty,

the operator must maintain unit as

instructed in this manual. Various ad-

jedustmentswill need to be made peri-

ically to properly maintain your unit.

CHECK FOR DAMAGED OR

Contact Sears Service Center for re-

placement of damaged or worn pads.

•ON/OFF Switch - Ensure ON/OFF

switch functions properly by moving

the switch to the OFF position. Make

sure engine stops; then, restart en-

gine and continue.

• Fuel Tank -Discontinue use of unit if

fuel tank shows signs of damage or

leaks.

•Debris Shield -Discontinue use of

unit if debris shield is damaged.

INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT AND

LABELS

•After each use, inspect complete unit

for Ioo6e or damaged pads. Clean

the unit and labels using a damp cloth

with a mild detergent.

• Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.

CLEAN AIR RLTER

A dirty air filter decreases engine per-

formance and increases fuel consump-

tion and harmful emissions. Always

clean after every 5 hours of operation.

1. Clean the cover and the area

_around it to keep dirt from falling

into the carburetor chamber when

the cover is removed.

2. Remove parts as illustrated.

NOTE: To avoid creating a fire hazard

or producing harmful evaporative

emissions, do not clean filter in gaso-

line or other flammable solvent.

3. Wash the filter in soap and water.

4. Allow filter to dry.

5. Add a few drops of oil to the filter;

squeeze the filter to distributeoil.

6. Replace pads.

INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARK

ARRESTING SCREEN

IIWARNING: The muffler on this

product contains chemicals known to

the State of California to cause cancer.

_,WARNING: Muffler is very hot

during and after use. Do not touch the

muffler or allow combustible material

such as dry grass or fuel to do so.

As your unit is used, carbon deposits

build up on the muffler and spark ar-

restincj screen and must be removed

to avoid creating a fire hazard or af-

fecting engine performance.

For normal homeowner use, the muf-

fler and spark arrestingscreen will not

require any service. After 50 hours of

use, we recommend that your muffler

be serviced or replaced by your Sears

Service Center.

REPLACESPARKPLUG

runsbetter.Set spark pluggapat

0.025in. Ignitiontiming isfixed and

nonadjustable.

1. Twist, then pull off spark plug boot.

2. Remove spark plug from cylinder

and discard.

3. Replace with Champion RCJ-TY

spark plug and tighten with a 3/4

in. socket wrench (10-12 ft.-Ibs).

4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.

REPLACING THE LINE

1. Remove spool by firmly pulling on

tap button.

2. Clean entire surface of hub and

spool.

3. Replace with pre-wound spool, or

cut a length of 20 feet of 0.08(7' (2

ram) diameter Craftsman® brand

line. Never use wire, rope, string,

etc., which can break off and be-

come a dangerous missile.

4. Insert one end of line about 1/2

inch (1 cm) into the small hole on

the inside of the spool.

5. Wind line evenly and tightly onto

spool. Wind in the direction of the

arrow on the spool

6. Push the line into the notch, leav-

ing 3 to 5 inches ( 7 -12 cm) un-

wound.

7. Insert the line into the exit hole in

the hub as shown in the illustration.

8. Align the notch with the line exit

hole.

9. Push spool into hub until it snaps

into place.

the hub to release it from the

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

_;_ WARNING: The trimmer head

will be spinning during most of this

procedure. Wear your protective

equipment and observe all safety pre-

cautions. After making mixture adjust-

ments, recheck idle speed.

Carburetor adjustment is critical and if

done improperly can permanently

damage the engine as well as the car-

buretor. If you require further assis-

tance or are unsure about performing

this procedure, call our customer as-

sistance help line at 1-800-235-5878.

Old fuel, a dirty air filter, a dirty fuel fil-

ter, or flooding may give the impres-

sion of an improperly adjusted carbu-

retor. Check these conditions before

adjusting the carburetor.

The carburetor has been carefully set

at the factory. Adjustments may be

necessary if you notice any of the fol-

lowing conditions:

• Engine will not idle. See IDLE SPEED

under adjusting procedure.

•Engine dies or hesitates instead of

accelerating. See ACCELERATION

CHECK under adjusting procedure.

•Loss of cutting power. See MIXTURE

ADJUSTMENT (L or H) under adjusting

procedure.

There are three adjustment screws on

the carburetor. The low speed adjust-

ment screw is marked with the letter L,

and the high speed adjustment screw

is marked with the letter H. The third

screw is the idle adjustment screw.

Idle Screw Adjustment

ADJUSTING PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Do not force plastic limiter

caps on screws beyond the built-in

stops or damage will occur. Be sure

trimmer line is extended to the maxi-

mum length allowed by the line limiter

blade.

Initial Settings:

1. Turn beth mixture screws (L and

H) counterclockwise until they

stop.

2. Turn the idle speed screw clock-

wise until it stops. Now turn coun-

terclockwise 4 1/2 turns.

3. Start engine, cut grass for 3 min-

utes, then proceed to adjust

screws according to the instruc-

tions below. If engine perfor-

mance at initial settings is accept-

able, no further adjustments are

necessary. If engine does not

start, refer to TROUBLESHOOTING

TABLE. If still unable to remedy sit-

uation, call 1-800-235-5878.

Idle Speed

Allow engine to idle. Adjust speed until

engine runs without stalling.

•Tum idle speed screw clockwise to

increase engine speed if engine

stalls or dies.

•Turn idle speed screw counterclock-

wise to decrease engine speed.

No further adjustments are necessary

if performance is satisfactory.

Low Speed Mixture Adjustment -L

1. Allow the engine to idle.

2. Turn low speed mixture screw (L)

slowly clockwise until the speed

begins to drop.

3. Turn the low speed mixture screw

(L) counterclockwise until the

speed increases and then starts to

drop again.

4. Set the low speed mixture screw

(L) at the midpoint between the

two positions.

Readjust the idle speed (See IDLE

SPEED).

High Speed Mixture Adjustment -H

CAUTION: Do not operate engine at

full throttle for prolonged periods while

making adjustments as damage to the

engine can occur. Adjust the mixture

screw 1/16 of a rum at a time. A 1/16

turn is about the width of the slot in the

top of the screw.

1. Allow the engine to idle.

2. Squeeze the throttle trigger fully.

Turn the high speed mixture screw

(H) counterclockwise until it stops.

3. Turn the high speed mixture screw

(H) 1/16 of a turn clockwise at a

time until the engine runs smoothly.

After completing adjustments, check

for acceleration. Reset if necessary.

Acceleration Check

If engine dies or hesitates instead of

accelerating, turn the low speed mix-

ture screw (L) counterclockwise until

you have smooth acceleration.

4BbWARNING: Perform the follow-

ing steps after each use:

•Allow engine to cool, and secure the

unit before stodng or transporting.

•Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated

area where fuel vapors cannot reach

sparks or open flames from water

heaters, electric motors or switches,

fumaces, etc.

• Store unit with all guards in place.

Position unit so that any sha.rp object

cannot accidentally cause injury.

•Store unit and fuel well out of the

reach of children.

SEASONAL STORAGE

Prepare unit for storage at end of sea-

son or if it will not be used for 30 days

or more.

If your unit is to be stored for a period

of time:

•Clean the entire unit before lengthy

storage.

• Store in a clean dry area.

• Lightly oil external metal surfaces.

FUEL SYSTEM

Under FUELING ENGINE in the OPERA-

TION section of this manual, see mas-

sage labeled IMPORTANT regarding

the use of gasohol in your engine.

Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alter-

native in minimizing the formation of

fuel gum deposits during storage. Add

stabilizer to the gasoline in the fuel

tank or fuel storage container. Follow

the mix instructions found on stabilizer

container. Run engine at least 5 min-

utes after adding stabilizer.

Craftsman 40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (air

cooled) is already blended with fuel

stabilizer. If you do not use this Sears

oil, you can add a fuel stabilizer to

your fuel tank.

INTERNAL ENGINE

•Remove spark plug and pour 1tea-

spoon of 40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (air

cooled) through the spark plug open-

ing. Slowly pull the starter rope 8 to

10 times to distribute oil.

•Replace spark plug with new one of

recommended type and heat range.

• Clean air filter.

•Check entire unit for loose screws,

nuts,and bolts.Replace any dam-

aged, broken,or wom parts.

•Atthe beginningof the next season,

use only Iresh fuel having the proper

gasoline'to oilratio.

OTHER

•Do not store gasoline from one sea-

son to another.

•Replace your gasoline can if it starts

to rust.

Protection Agency/California Air Re-

sources Board and Sears, Roebuck

and Co., U.S.A., are pleased to explain

the emisslons control system warranty

on your year 2000-2003 small off-road

engine. In California, all new small off-

road engines must be designed, built,

and equipped to meet the State's strin-

gent anti-smog standards. Sears must

warrant the emission control system on

your small off-road engine for the peri-

ods of time listed below provided there

has been no abuse, neglect, or improp-

er maintenance of your small off-road

engine engine. Your emission control

system includes parts such as the car-

buretor and the ignition system. Where

a warrantable condition exists, Sears

will repair your small off-road engine

engine at no cost to you. Expenses •

covered under warranty include diagno-

sis, parts and labor. MANUFACTUR-

ER'S WARRANTY COVERAGE: If any

emissions related part on your engine

(as listed under Emissions Control War-

ranty Parts List) is defective or a defect

in the materials or workmanship of the

engine causes the failure of such an

emission related part, the part will be

repaired or replaced by Sears. OWN-

ER'S WARRANTY RESPONSIBILI-

TIES: As the small off-road.engine en-

gine owner, you are responsible for the

performance of the required mainte-

nance listed in your Owner's Manual.

Sears recommends that you retain all

receipts covering maintenance on your

small off-road engine, but Sears cannot

deny warranty solely for the lack of re-

ceipts or for your failure to ensure the

performance of all scheduled mainte-

nance. As the small off-road engine en-

gine owner, you should be aware that

Sears may deny you warranty coverage

if your small off-road engine engine or

a part of it has failed due to abuse, ne-

glect, improper maintenance, unap-

proved modifications, or the use of parts

not made or approved by the original

equipment manufacturer. You are re-

sponsible for presenting your small off-

road engine to a Sears authorized re-

pair center as soon as a problem exists.

Warranty repairs should be completed

in a reasonable amount of time, not to

exceed 30 days. If you have any ques-

tions regarding your warranty rights and

responsibilities, you should contact your

nearest authorized service center or call

Sears at 1-800-469-4663. WARRANTY

COMMENCEMENT DATE: The war-

ranty period begins on the date the

small off-road engine is purchased.

LENGTH OF COVERAGE: This war-

ranty shall be for a period of two years

from the initial date of purchase. WHAT

IS COVERED: REPAIR OR REPLACE-

MENT OF PARTS. Repair or replace-

ment of any warranted part will be per-

formed at no charge to the owner at an

approved Sears Service Center. If you

have any questions regarding your war-

ranty rights and responsibilities, you

should contact your nearest authorized

service center or call Sears at

1-800-469-4663. WARRANTY PE-

RIOD: Any warranted part which is not

scheduled for replacement as required

maintenance, or which is scheduled

only for regular inspection to the effect

of "repair or replace as necessary" shall

be warranted for 2 years. Any war-

ranted part which is scheduled for re-

placement as required maintenance

shall be warranted for the period of time

up to the first scheduled replacement

point for that pad. DIAGNOSIS: The

owner shall not be charged for diagnos-

tic labor which leads to the determina-

tion that a warranted part is defective if

the diagnostic work is performed at an

approved Sears Service Center. CON-

SEQUENTIAL DAMAGES: Sears may

be liable for damages to other engine

components caused by the failure of a

warranted part still under warranty.

WHAT IS NOT COVERED: All failures

caused by abuse, neglect, or improper

maintenance are not covered. ADD-ON

OR MODIRED PARTS: The use of

add-on or modified parts can be

grounds for disallowing a warranty

claim. Sears is not liable to cover fail-

ures of warranted parts caused by the

Se usa el interrupterON/OFFpara deten-

er el motor.Coloque el internJptoren la

BOMBEADOR

El BOMBEADOR retira el aire de el car-

burador y de las Ifneas de combustible

y las Ilena de mezcla de combustible,

permitidndole poner el motor en mar-

cha con menos tirones de la cuerda de

arranque. Accione el bombeador opri-

mi6ndolo y luego dejando que este re-

cobre su forma original.

CEBADOR

El CEBAOOR ayuda a suministrar com-

bustible al motor para facilitar el arran-

que cuando el motor estd frio. Acione

el cebador colocando la palanca en la

posici6n FULL CHOKE. Despu6s que el

motor intente arrancar, mueva la pa-

lanca del cebador a la posici6n HALF

CHOKE. Despu6s que el motor se

haya puesto en mamha, pon_a la pa-

lanca del cebador en la posic=6n OFF

CHOKE.

GUlA PARA BORDES

La GUIA PARA BORDES impedird que el

aparato toque el suelo durante el pro-

cedimiento de bordear.

ANTES DE PONER EN MARCHA EL

MOTOR

_ADVERTENCIA: Lea

atentamente la informaci6n sobre el

combustible en laas reglas de

seguridad antes de comenzar. Si no

comprende las reglas de seguridad,

no intente abastecer el aparato de

combustible. Llame al numero

ABASTEClMIENTO DEL MOTOR

_IL ADVERTENClA: Remueva la

taps del tanque de combustible lenta-

mente al reabastecer combustible.

Este motor esta habilitado para

funcionar con gaselina sin plomo. Antes

de comenzar con el uso, se deberd

mezclar la gasolina con un aceite de

sintdtico de buena calidsd.para motores

de 2 tiempos enfriados a a_re.

Recomendamos el aceite de sintdtico

de la marca Craftsman. Mezcle la

gasolina con el aceite en la proporci6n

40:1. (Se obtiene una proporci6n de

40:1 mezclando 3.2 onzas de aceite

con carla gal6n de gasolina sin plomo).

NO USE aceite para autombviles ni para

barcas. Estos aceites da_aran el motor.

AI mezclar el combustible, siga las

instrucciones impresas en el resipiente.

Una vez haya a_adido el aceite a la

gasolina,agite al r_.iplente brevemente

para asegurar que et combustibleest6

completamente mezclado. Siempre lea

y siga las instruccionesde seguridad

que tienen que ver con el combustible

antes de abestecer el aparato.

IMPORTANTE

La experiencia indica que los combus-

tible mezclados con alcohol (los llama-

dos gasohol o los que contienen eta-

nolo metanol) pueden atraer la

humedad, Io que puede causar la se-

paracibn y la formaci6n de dcides du-

rante el almacenaje. La gasolina dcida

puede da6ar el ststema de combus-

tible del motor durante el almacenaje.

Para evitar problemas con el motor,

deberd vaciarse el sistema de com-

bustible antes de almacenar el aparato

pot 30 d|as o m_s. Vac|e el tanque de

combustible, ponga el motor en mar-

cha y ddjelo en marcha hasta que las

queden vacios. Use combustible fres-

EL MOTOR

ADVERTENCIA: El cabezat de

code girard mientras se est6 intentan-

do poner en marcha el motor. Evite el

hacer ningun tipo de contacto con el

silenciador. Un silenciador caliente

podrla provocar quemaduras de gra-

vedad si se toca.

PAPA ARRANCAR CON MOTOR

FRIO (o motor caliente despuds de

quedar sin combustible)

1. Ponga el aparato en una superficie

plana.

2. Mueva el intermptor ON/OFF a la

posicidn ON.

3. Oprima lentamente el bombeador

6 veces.

4. Mueva la palanca del cebador a la

posici6n FULL CHOKE.

5. Apriete y sujete el gatillo durante

todos los pasos siguientes.

_prima el bombeador 6 veces.

5. Permita que el motor marche por 15

segundos,entonces mueva la pa-

lancadel cebador a la posicibnOFF

CHOKE.

AVISO: Si el motor no arranca, tire de

la cuerda otras 5 veces. Si el motor no

arranca, probablemente estd ahogado.

ARRANQUE DE MOTOR AHOGADO

Lors motores ahogados pueden pon-

erse en mamha moviendo la palanca

del cebador a la posici6n OFF CHOKE;

luego, tire de la cuerda para aclarar el

exceso de combustible. Esto podrd re-

querir que se tire del mango de la

cuerda muchas veces dependiendo

cuan ahogado se encuentre el motor.

entrada, etc.

METODOS DE CORTE

_ADVERTENCIA: Use la veloci-

dad minima y no acerque el aparato

demasiado al cortar cerca de objetos

s61idos (piedra, gravilla, postes, etc.):

estos pueden dafiar el cabezal; pue-

den enredarse en la I|nea o la Imea los

puede arrojar violentamente al aire,

causando serio peligro.

•La punta de la Ifnea es la que corta.

Se conseguird mejor rendimiento y

el minimo desgaste si no se mete la

linea dentro del material que se est_

cortando. La ilustraci6n a continua-

cibn muestra la forma correcta e in-

correcta de cortar.

•La Ifnes retire fitcilmente el c_ped y

las malas hierbas de aTrededor de pa-

redes, cercados, _rboles y macizos de

bustos y de marcar las cercas. Para

evitar dar_os, especialmente a la vege-

taci6n delicada o a los drbdes con

corteza fina, acorte la lines a unos 10

a13 cm (4 a 5 pulgadas) y use el

aparato sin acelerar a fondo.

•Para recortar o escalpar, use el apa-

rato sin acelerar a fondo, para incre-

mentar la vida dtil de la Ifnea y dismi-

nuir el desgaste del cabezal,

especialmente:

•AI hacer trabajos livianos.

•Cerca de objetos con los cuales la

linea se puede enredar, como son

los postes o drboles de poco didme-

troy el alambre de las cercas.

•Para cortar cdsped y barrer acelere

e motor a fondo para Iograr un buen

trabajo de limpieza.

'_ ADVERTENClA: Use siempre

protecci6n para los ojos. Nunca se in-

cline por encima del cabezal. La Ifnea

puede arrojar o hacer rebotar piedras

o desechos hacia los ojos y la cara,

pudiendo causar la p_rdida de la vista

u otras graves heridas.

PARA RECORTAR -Sostenga el ca-

bezal unos 8 cm (3 pulgadas) del Suelo

y.en dngulo. Unicamente la punta de la

linea deberd hacerel contacto con el

material a cortar. No meta la linea den-

tro del drea que se estd codando.

PARA ESCALPAR -La t_cnica del as-

calpado retira la vegetaci6n no desea-

da abajo a la tierra. Sostenga el cabe-

zal unos 8 cm (3 pulgadas) del suelo y

en dngulo. Deje que la punta de la

Ifneagolpee contra el suelo cerca de

los drboles, los postes, los monumen-

tos, etc. Esta tdcnica incrementa el

desgaste de la linea.

PARA CORTAR CESPED -Este para-

to es ideal para cortar c_sped en lu-

gente suave.

LIMPIE EL FILTRO DEL AIRE

Los filtros de aire sucios disminuyen la

vida dtil yel rendimiento del motor e

incrementan el consumo de combus-

tible y de emiciones nocivas. Limpie

siempre el filtro de aire despuds de

cada 5 horas de uso.

1. Limpie la tapa y el drea alrededor

de la tapa para evitar que caiga su-

ciedad o desechos en el carbura-

dor cuando se saque la tapa.

2. Retire las piezas como se ilustra.

AVISO: Pare evitar peligro de incen-

dio y de emiciones evaporativas noci-

vas, no limpie el filtro de aire con gaso-

lina ni cualquier otro solvente inflam-

able.

3. Limpie el filtro con agua y jab6n.

4. Permita qua el filtro se seque.

5. Aplique varias gotas de aceite al fil-

tro; expdma el filtro para distribuir el

aceite.

INSPECCIONE EL SILENCIADOR Y

LA REJILLA ANTICHISPAS

ADVERTENCIA: El silenciador

en este producto contiene las substan-

cias qurmicas que el estado de Califor-

nia reconoce como causantes de

cdncer.

ADVERTENCIA: El silenciador

es extremadamente caliente durante

el uso y despu6s de usar el aparato,

No toque el silenciador ni permita que

el material combustible tal como gaso-

lina o hierba seca hagan contacto.

A medida que se use el aparato, el si-

lenciador y la rejilla antichispas se van

carbonizando. Es necesario sacar la

carbonizacibn para evitar el riesgo de

inceLqdioo afectar el rendimiento del

motor.

Para el uso normal del due_o de la

casa, el silenciador y la rejilla antichispa

no requedrdn ningt_n servicio. Despu_s

de 50 horas de uso, recomendamos

que al silenciador sele de servicio o

sea substituido por un Concesionario de

Servicio Autorizado.

CAMBIE LA BUJIA

Deberd cambiarse la bujfa anualmente

para asegurar que el motor arranque

fdcilmente y tenga un major rendimein-

to. Ajuste la separacibn de los electro-

dos a0,025 de pulgada. El encendido

es fijo e inalterable.

1. Gire y saque la cubierta de la

bujsa.

2. Retire la bujia del cilindro y desk-

chela.

3. Cdmbiela por una buj(a Champion

RCJ-7Y y ajuste la bujia nueva con

una Ilave de cubo de 3/4 de pulga-

da (10 a 12 libras/pie).

4. Instale nuevamente la cubierta de

la bujia.

REEMPLAZO DE LA UNEA

1. Retire la bobina tirando del bot6n

de toque firmemente.

2. Limpie por entero la superficie del

cubo y de la bobina.

3. Reemplace la bobina por una pre-

viamente enrollada, o corte un pe-

dazo de 6 metros (20 pies) de lar-

go de hnea de 2 mm (0,080 de

pulgada) de la marca Craftsman ®.

Nunca use alambre, cuerda, hilo,

etc., los cuales pueden romperse y

convertirse en proyectiles petigro-

SOS.

4. Introduzca una de las puntas de la

Ifnea, alrededor de I cm (1/2 pul-

gada), dentro del hueco pequefio

que se encuentra en la parte interi- -

or de la bobina.

5. Enrolle la linea en la bobina de for-

rna pareja y ajustada. Enrolle [a

Ifnea en la direcci6n en que apunta

la flecha que se encuentra en la

bobina.

6. Introduzca la Iinea dentro de la

muesca, dejando de 7 a 12 cm (3

a 5 pulgadas) sin enrollar.

7. Introduzca la ffnea dentro del hue-

co de salida en el cubo como se

muestra en la ilustraci6n.

8. Alfnee la muesca con el hueco de

salida de la Ifnea.

9. Presione la bobina dentro del cubo

hasta que @sta encaje en su lugar.

fuera del cubo para soltarla de la

AJUSTEALCARBURADOR

ADVERTENCIA: El cabezal de

corte se mantendrd girando durante la

mayor parte de este procedimiento.

Use su equipo protector y observe to-

das las precauciones de seguridad.

Verifique la marcha lenta despuds de

cada ajuste de mezcla.

El ajuste del carburador es de primor-

dial importancia. Si se hace incorrecta-

mente, puede dafiar tanto el motor

como el carburador permanente-

mente. Si necesita mds ayuda o no

estd seguro de c6mo hacer este pro-

cedimiento, Ilame al n=Jmero de ayuda

al consumidor 1-800-235-5878.

El combustible vencido, el filtro de aire

sucio, el filtro combustible sucio o el

motor ahogado pueden dar la impre-

si6n de carburacion desajustada. Veri-

fique estas condiciones antes de hac-

er cualquier ajuste al carburador.

El carburador ha sido ajustado cuida-

dosamente en la fabrica. Posible-

mente sea necesario hacer ajustes si

se nota cualquiera de las siguientes

condiciones:

•El motor no anda en marcha lenta.

• El motor se para o se ahoga cuando

debe acelerar. Vea VERIFICACION DE

Hay tres tomillo de ajuste en le carbu-

rador. El tornillo de ajuste de baja

aceleraci6n est,. marcado con la letra

"L", yel tornillo de ajuste de alta acel-

eraci6n estd marcado con la letra "H".

El tercer tornillo es etornillo de ajuste

PROCEDIMIENTO DE AJUSTE

PRECAUCION: AI hacer ajustes no

fuerce las tapas limitadoras de pldstico

haber dafios. AsegOrese que la Ifnea

de corte est_ extendida el/argo maxi-

mo permitida por el cuchilla limitadora

de Ifnea.

Procedimiento Inicial

1. Gire el tomillos de ajuste de mez-

cla (L y H) hacia la izquierda hasta

que se detenga.

2. Gire el tomillo de marcha lenta ha-

cia la derecha hasta que se deten-

ga. Luego, gfrelo hacia la izquier-

da 4 vueltas y media.

3. Ponga el motor en marcha, corte la

hierba por 3 minutos, luego proce-

da a ajustar los tornillos de acuer-

do alas instrucciones indicas en la

siguiente secci6n. Si el funciona-

miento del motor es aceptable con

las posiciones anteriores, no hard

falta hacer ajustes. Si el motor no

arranca, yea la TABLA DIAGNOSTI-

Marcha Lenta

Deje el motor en marcha lenta. Ajuste

las revoluciones hasta que el motor se

mantenga en marcha sin calarse.

• Gire el tomillo de marcha lenta hacia

la derecha para aumentar las revo-

luciones si el motor se ahoga o se

para.

•Gire el tornillo de marcha lenta ha-

cia la izquierda para reducir las re-

voluciones.

No hard falta ningOn otto ajuste si el

funcionamiento es satisfactorio.

Mezcla de Bajas Revoluciones "L"

1. Deje el motor en mamha lenta.

2. Gire el tomillo de las bajas revolu-

ciones "L" hacia la derecha hasta

que la velocidad empiece a dismi-

nuir.

3. Gire el tomillo de las bajas revolu-

ciones =L" hacia la izquierda hasta

que la velocidad aumente y luego

empiece a disminuir nuevamente.

4. Coloque el tomillo para bajas revo-

luciones "L" en un punto intermedio

entre las dos posiciones ante-

riores.

Vuelva a ajustar la marcha lenta (vea

MARCHA LENTA).

Mezcla para Altas Revoluciones "H"

PRECAUCION: No use el motor con

el aceleradora fondo per prolongados

periodos de tiempo mientras se

encuentre haciendo los adjustes de

altas revoluciones y que daSos al

motor podrian ocurrir. Ajuste el tornillo

de altas revoluciones por incrementos

de 1/16 de vuelta cada vez. Un 1/16

de vuelta es alrededor del mismo

didmetro que la renura que se

encuentra en la parte superior del

tomillo.

1. Deje el motor en marcha lenta.

2. Apriete el gatillo acelerador com-

pletamente. Gire el tomillo de altas

revoluciones "H" hacia la izquierda

hasta que se detenga.

3. Gire el tornillo de altas revolu-

clones "H" pot incrementos de 1/16

de vuelta cada vez hacia la dere-

cha basra que el motor marche sin

problemas.

Despuds de terminar ajustes, verifique

de aceleracibn. Reajuste en caso de

necesidad.

Verificaci6n de Aceleraci6n

Si el motor trata de parar en vez de

acelerar, gire el tornillo de la mezcla

para bajas revoluciones %" en contra

del sentido del reloj hasta que la acel-

eracibn sea estable.

ADVERTENCIA: Realice los

siguientes pasos despu6s de cada

uso:

• Permita que el motor se enfrfe y fije

bien el aparato antes de guardarlo o

transportarlo.

• Guarde el aparato y el combustible

en un lugar blen ventilado donde los

vapores del combustible no puedan

entrar en contacto con chispas ni lla-

mas abiertas provenlentes de clenta-

dores de a_lua, motores o interrup-

tores eldctncos, calefactores

centrales, etc.

•Guarde el aparato con todos los pro-

tectores en su lugar y coloquelo de

modo que las piezas cortantes no -

puedan causar heridas por acci-

dente.

•Guarde el aparato y el combustible

en un lugar completamente fuera del

alcance de los nifios.

ESTACIONAL ALMACENAJE

Prepare el aparato para almacenarlo

al final de la temporada o si no Io va a

usar pot mds de 30 dfas.

Siva a almacenar el aparato durante

un periodo largo de tiempo:

•Limpie el aparato por completo antes

del almacenaje.

•Almacene en un area limpia y seca.

•Aplique una pequefia cantidad de

aceite a las superficies externas

metdlicas.

SISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLE

Vea el mensaje marcado como

IMPORTANTE, que se refiere al uso

de combustibles con mezcla de alco-

hol en su aparato, en la secci6n de

USO, bajo ABASTECIMIENTODEL MO-

TOR. Los estabilizadores de combus-

tible son una alternativa aceptable

para minimizar la formaci6n de depOsi-

tos de goma durante el almacenaje.

Afiada estabihzador a la gasolina en el

tanque de combustible o en el reci-

piente para almacenar el mismo. Siga

las instmcciones de mezcla que se en-

cuentran impresas en el envasa. Pon-

ga el motor en marcha y d_jelo en

marcha por unos 5 minutosdespu6s

de habede puesto estabilizador.

El aceite Craftsman 40:1 para motores

a 2 tiempos (enfdados a aire) viena

mezclado con estabilizador de com-

bustible. Si no usa este aceite de

Sears, usted podrd afiadir estabiliza-

dot al tanque de combustible.

INTERIOR DEL MOTOR

•Retire la bujfay vierta una cucharad-

ita de aceite 40:1 para motores a 2

tiempos (enfriados a aire) por la ab-

erlura para la buj=a.Lentamente, tire

de la cuerda de arranque de 8 a 10

veces para distribuir el aceite.

•Cambie la bujia por una nueva del

tipo y de la gama de calor recomen-

dados.

•Limpie el filtro de aire.

•Examine todo el aparato para verifi-

car que no haya tornillos, tuercas ni

pemos sueltos. Cambie todas la pie-

zas da_adas, quebradas o gasta-

das.

•AI principiode la pr6xima temporada,

use exclusivamente combustible

fresco con la proporci6n correcta de

gasolina a aceite.

OTROS

•No guarde la gasolina de una tempo-

rada a la prbxima.

•Cambie el recipiente de gasolina si

se empieza aoxidar.
