FULL ONE YEAR WARRANTY ON CRAFTSMAN ®GAS POWERED HEDGE

TRIMMER

For one (1) year from the date of purchase, when this Craftsman Gas Powered

Hedge Trimmer is maintained, lubricated, and tuned up according to the operat-

ing and maintenance instructions in this manual, Sears will repair, free of charge,

any defects in materials or workmanship.

This warranty excludes spark plug, air filter, and the blade which are expendable

parts and may become worn during normal use.

If this Hedge Trimmer is used for commercial purposes, this warranty applies for only

90 days from the date of purchase. If this Hedge Trimmer is used for rental purposes,

this warranty applies for only 30 days from the date of purchase. This warranty ap-

plies only while this product is used in the United States.

WARRANTY SERVICE IS AVAILABLE BY RETURNING THE HEDGE TRIMMER TO THE

NEAREST SEARS STORE OR SERVICE CENTER iN THE UNITED STATES.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights

which vary from state to state.

PLAN AHEAD

_WARNING: inspect the area be-

fore starting the unit. Remove all debris

and hard objects such as rocks, glass,

wire, etc. that can ricochet, be thrown,

or otherwise cause injury or damage

during operation.

• Always wear eye protection when op-

erating, servicing, or performing main-

tenance on unit. Wearing eye protec-

tion will help to prevent brush or debris

from being thrown or ricocheting into

eyes and face which can result in

blindness and/or serious injury. Eye

protection should be marked Z87.

• Wear hearing protection when using

this unit.

• Secure hair above shoulder length. Se-

cure or remove jewelry, loose clothing,

or clothing with loosely hanging straps,

ties, tassels, etc. They can be caught

in moving parts.

• Stay alert. Do not operate unit when

you are tired, ill, upset, or if you are

under the influence of alcohol, drugs,

or medication.

ered in this manual, use care and good

HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION

• Eliminate all sources of sparks or

flame (including smoking, open

flames, or work that can cause

sparks) in the areas where fuel is

mixed, poured, or stored.

•Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area;

store fuel in a cool, dry, well ventilated

place; use an approved, marked con-

tainer for all fuel purposes.

• Do not smoke while handling fuel or

while operating the unit.

• Do not fill fuel tank while engine is

running.

• Make sure the unit is properly as-

sembled and in good operating con-

dition.

• Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up fuel

spills before starting the engine.

• Move at least 10 feet (3 meters)

away from fuel and fueling site before

starting engine.

• Always store gasoline in a container

approved for flammable liquids.

OPERATE YOUR UNIT SAFELY

DANGER: RISK OF CUT; KEEP

released. Do not attempt to clear away

cut material when the blade is in mo-

tion. Make sure the ON/OFF switch is in

the OFF position, the spark plug wire is

disconnected, and the blade has

stopped moving before removing

jammed material from the cutting

blade. Do not grab or hold the unit by

the cutting blade.

• Inspect unit before each use for

worn, loose, missing, or damaged

parts. Do not use until unit is in

proper working order.

• Keep outside surfaces free from oil

and fuel.

• Never start or run engine inside a

closed room or building. Breathing

exhaust fumes can kill.

• Avoid dangerous environments. Do

not use in unventilated areas or

where explosive vapors or carbon

monoxide build up could be present.

• Do not overreach or use from unsta-

ble surfaces such as ladders, trees,

steep slopes, rooftops, etc. Keep firm

footing and balance at all times.

• Do not raise unit above your shoul-

ders; the cutting blade can come

dangerously close to your body.

• Always keep unit in fi'ont of your body.

Keep all parts of your body away from

the cutting blade.

MAINTAIN YOUR UNIT PROPERLY

•Have all maintenance and service

not explained in this manual per-

formed by aSears Service Center.

• Disconnect spark plug before per-

forming maintenance except for car-

buretor adjustments.

•Do not use acutting blade that is

bent, warped, cracked, broken, or

damaged in any other way. Have

worn or damaged pads replaced by

your Sears Service Center.

•Use only recommended Craftsman

cutting blades and replacement

parts; use of any other parts may

void your warranty and cause dam-

age to your unit.

• Empty fuel tank before storing the unit.

Use up fuel left in carburetor by starting

engine and letting it run until it stops.

• Hand carry the unit with the engine

stopped and the muffler and cutting

blade away from your body.

•Allow engine to cool, empty the fuel

tank, and secure the unit before stor-

ing or transporting it in a vehicle.

• Do not store the unit or fuel in a

closed area where fuel vapors can

reach sparks or an open flame from

hot water heaters, electric motors or

switches, furnaces, etc.

•Store the unit so the cutting blade

cannot accidentally cause injury.

•Store in a dry area out of reach of

children.

SAFETY NOTICE: Exposure to vibra-

tions through prolonged use of gaso-

line powered hand tools could cause

blood vessel or nerve damage in the

fingers, hands, and joints of people

prone to circulation disorders or abnor-

mal swelling. Prolonged use in cold

weather has been linked to blood ves-

sel damage in otherwise healthy

people. If symptoms occur such as

numbness, pain, loss of strength,

change in skin color or texture, or loss

of feeling in the fingers, hands, or

joints, discontinue the use of this tool

and seek medical attention. An

antivibration system does not guaran-

tee the avoidance of these problems.

Users who operate power tools on a

continual and regular basis must moni-

tor closely their physical condition and

the condition of this tool.

SPECIAL NOTICE: Your hedge trim-

mer is equipped with a temperature

limiting muffler and spark arresting

screen which meets the requirements

of California Codes 4442 and 4443. All

U.S. forest land and the states of Cali-

fornia, Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, New

Jersey, Oregon, and Washington re-

quire by law that many internal com-

bustion engines be equipped with a

spark arresting screen. If you operate

a hedge trimmer in a state or locale

where such regulations exist, you are

legally responsible for maintaining the

operating condition of these parts.

Failure to do so is a violation of the law.

For normal homeowner use, the muffler

and spark arresting screen will not re-

quire any service. After 50 hours of

use, we recommend that your muffler

be serviced or replaced by your Sears

Service Center.

ON/OFF SWITCH

The ON/OFF SWITCH is used to stop the

engine. To stop the engine, move the

switch to the OFF position.

CHOKE

The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to the

engine to aid in cold starting. Activate the

choke by moving choke lever to the de-

sired position. See STARTING YOUR EN-

GINE for complete starting information.

PRIMER BULB

The PRIMER BULB removes air from the

fuel lines and fills them with fuel. This

allows you to start the engine with few-

er pulls on the starter rope. Activate the

palmer bulb by pressing it and allowing

it to return to its original form.

THRO'n'LE TRIGGER

The THROI-rLE TRIGGER controls engine

speed. Squeeze the trigger for full speed

operation; release it for idle speed.

A(_ WARNING: Muffler is very hot

during and after use. Do not touch the

muffler or allow combustible material

such as dry grass or fuel to do so.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

• ILWARNING: Be sure to read the

fuel information in the safety rules

before you begin. If you do not

understand the safety rules, do not

attempt to fuel your unit. Call

1-800-235-5878.

FUELING ENGINE

WARNING: Remove fuel cap

slowly when refueling.

This engine is certified to operate on

unleaded gasoline. Before operation,

gasoline must be mixed with a good

quality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooled

engine oil. We recommend Craftsman

brand synthetic oil. Mix gasoline and oil

at a ratio of 40:1 (A 40:1 ratio is

obtained by mixing 3.2 ounces of oil

with 1 gallon of unleaded gasoline). DO

NOT USE automotive oil or boat oil.

These oils will cause engine damage.

When mixing fuel, follow instructions

printed on container.

Once oil is added to gasoline, shake

container momentarily to assure that

the fuel is thoroughly mixed. Always

read and follow the safety rules relating

to fuel before fueling your unit.

IMPORTANT

Experience indicates that alcohol

blended fuels (called gasohol or using

ethanol or methanol) can attract mois-

ture which leads to separation and

formation of acids during storage. Acid-

ic gas can damage the fuel system of

an engine while in storage.

To avoid engine problems, empty the

fuel system before storage for 30 days

or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the

engine and let it run until the fuel lines

and carburetor are empty. Use fresh

fuel next season.

Never use engine or carburetor cleaner

products in the fuel tank or permanent

damage may occur.

See the STORAGE section for additional

information.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

It is recommended that the engine

not be operated for longer than 30

seconds at full throttle. Releasing

the trigger and allowing the engine to

briefly return to idle speed (5 -10 sec-

onds) will be sufficient.

IMPORTANT POINTS

•Use the minimum throttle speed nec-

essary to effectively cut hedges for

optimal hedge trimmer performance.

•Never attempt to use this hedge trim-

mer to cut hedges that have any

branches with a diameter larger than

7/16".

STOPPING YOUR ENGINE

• To stop the engine, move the ON/OFF

switch to the OFF position.

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE

•Fuel engine. Move at least 10 feet (3

meters) away from the fueling site.

•Hold the unit on the ground in the

starting position as shown. Support

unit so the blade is off of the ground

and away from trees, bushes, on-

lookers, etc.

1. Move the ON/OFF switch to the ON

position.

2. Engage the throtfle lock as follows:

•press the throttle lock-out;

•squeeze and hold throttle trigger;

•press and hold throttle lock;

•release the throttle trigger

NOTE: Keep the throttle lock engaged

until the engine starts.

3. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.

4. Move the choke lever to the FULL

CHOKE position.

5. Pull starter rope handle sharply until

engine sounds as if it is trying to run,

but do not pull rope more than 6

times.

6. Move the choke lever to the HALF

CHOKE position.

7. Pull starter rope sharply until the en-

gine runs, but no more than 6 pulls.

NOTE: If the engine doesn't start af-

ter 6 pulls (at the HALF CHOKE posi-

tion), check to make sure the ON/

OFF switch is in the ON position.

Move the choke lever to the FULL

CHOKE position and press the prim-

er bulb 6 times; pull the starter rope

2 more times. Move the choke lever

to the HALF CHOKE position and pull

the starter rope until the engine

runs, but no more than 6 more pulls.

If the engine still doesn't start, it is

probably flooded. Proceed to

STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE.

8. Once the engine starts, allow it to

run 10 seconds, then move the

choke lever to the OFF CHOKE posi-

tion. Allow the unit to run for 30 more

seconds at the OFF CHOKE position

before squeezing and releasing the

throttle trigger to release the throttle

lock. NOTE: If engine dies with the

choke lever in the OFF CHOKE posi-

tion, move the choke lever to the

HALF CHOKE position and pull the

rope until engine runs, but no more

than 6 pulls.

STARTING A WARM ENGINE

1. Move the ON/OFF switch to the ON

position.

2. Slowly press the primer bulb 6

times.

3. Move the choke lever to the HALF

CHOKE position.

4. Engage the throttle lock as directed

in STARTING A COLD ENGINE.

NOTE: Keep the throttle lock engaged

until the engine starts.

5. Pull starter rope sharply until engine

runs, but no more than 5 pulls.

6. Allow the engine to run 10 seconds,

then move choke lever to the OFF

CHOKE position.

7. Release the throttle lock by squeez-

ing and releasing the throttle trigger.

NOTE: If engine has not started, pull

starter rope 5 more pulls. If engine still

does not run, it is probably flooded. Pro-

ceed to STARTING AFLOODED ENGINE.

STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE

Flooded engines can be started by

placing the ON]OFF switch in the ON

position and the choke lever in the OFF

CHOKE position and engaging the

throttle lock as directed in the START-

ING A COLD ENGINE section; then, pull

the rope to clear the engine of excess

fuel. Starting could require pulling the

starter rope many times depending on

how badly the unit is flooded.

If the unit still doesn't start, refer to the

TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call

1-800-235-5878.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The warranty on this unit does not cov-

er items that have been subjected to

operator abuse or negligence. To re-

ceive full value from the warranty, the

operator must maintain unit as instruct-

ed in this manual. Various adjustments

will need to be made periodically to

properly maintain your unit.

shows signs of damage or leaks.

• After each use, clean the unit and la-

bels using a damp cloth with a mild

detergent.

Adirty air filter decreases engine per-

formance and increases fuel consump-

tion and harmful emissions. Always

clean after every 5 hours of operation.

1. Clean the cover and the area

around it to keep debris from falling

into the carburetor chamber when

the cover is removed.

2. Remove parts as illustrated.

NOTE: To avoid creating a fire hazard

or producing harmful evaporative emis-

sions, do not clean filter in gasoline or

other flammable solvent.

3. Wash the filter in soap and water.

4. Allow filter to dry.

5. Add a few drops of oil to the filter;

squeeze filter to distribute oil.

6. Replace parts.

INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARK AR-

RESTING SCREEN

dl_ WARNING: The muffler on this

product contains chemicals known to

the State of California to cause cancer.

As your unit is used, carbon deposits

build up on the muffler and spark ar-

resting screen and must be removed to

avoid creating a fire hazard or affecting

engine performance.

For normal homeowner use, the muffler

and spark arresting screen will not re-

quire any service. After 50 hours of

use, we recommend that your muffler

be serviced or replaced by your Sears

Service Center.

REPLACE SPARK PLUG

Replace spark plug each year to en-

sure the engine starts easier and runs

better. Set spark plug gap at 0.025 in.

Ignition timing is fixed, nonadjustable.

1. Twist, then pull off spark plug boot.

2. Remove spark plug from cylinder

and discard.

3. Replace with Champion RCJ-7Y

spark plug and tighten with a 3/4 in.

socket wrench (10-1:2 ft.-Ibs).

4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.

REPLACE FUEL FILTER

To replace fuel filter, drain unit by run-

ning it dry of fuel, then remove fuel cap/

retainer assembly from tank. Pull filter

from tank and remove it from the fuel

line. Install new fuel filter on fuel line;

reinstall parts.

ments not listed in this manual be per*

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

_WARNING: The blade will be

moving during most of this procedure.

Wear your protective equipment and

observe all safety precautions. When

making adjustments, use a screwddver

short enough to keep your hands be-

hind the handguard and away from the

blade. After making mixture adjust-

ments, recheck idle speed. The blade

must not move at idle speed.

Carburetor adjustment is critical and if

done improperly can permanently dam-

age the engine as well as the carbure-

tor. If you require further assistance or

are unsure about performing this pro-

cedure, call our Customer Assistance

Helpline at 1-800-235-5878.

Old fuel, a dirty air filter, a dirty fuel fil-

ter, or flooding may give the impression

of an improperly adjusted carburetor.

Check these conditions before adjust-

ing the carburetor.

The carburetor has been carefully set

at the factory. Adjustments may be

necessary if you notice any of the fol-

lowing conditions:

• The blade moves at idle. See IDLE

SPEED under adjusting procedure.

• Engine will not idle. See IDLE SPEED

under adjusting procedure.

•Engine dies or hesitates instead of

accelerating. See ACCELERATION

CHECK under adjusting procedure.

•Loss of power. See MIXTURE AD-

JUSTMENT (L or H) under adjusting

procedure.

There are three adjustment screws on

the carburetor. The low speed mixture

screw is marked with the letter L, and

the high speed mixture screw is

marked with the letter H. The third

screw is the idle speed screw.

ADJUSTING PROCEDURE

CAUTION: DO not force plastic limiter

caps on screws beyond the built-in

stops or damage will occur.

Initial Settings

1. Turn both mixture screws (L and H)

counterclockwise until they stop.

2. Turn the idle speed screw clockwise

until it stops. Now turn counterclock-

wise 4-1/2 turns.

3. Start engine and let it run for 3 min-

utes, varying the speed with the trig-

ger; then, proceed to adjust screws

according to the instructions below.

If engine performance at initial set-

tings is acceptable, no further ad-

justments are necessary. If engine

does not start, refer to the TROUBLE-

SHOOTING TABLE. If still unable to

remedy situation, call

1-800-235-5878.

Idle Speed

Allow engine to idl_ If the blade

moves, idle speed is too fast. If the en-

gine stalls, idle speed is too slow.

• Turn idle speed screw clockwise to

increase engine speed.

• Turn idle speed screw counterclock-

wise to decrease engine speed.

_i;_ WARNING: Recheck the idle

speed after each adjustment. The

blade must not move at idle speed to

avoid serious injury to the operator and

others.

Low Speed Mixture -L

1. Allow the engine to idle.

2. Turn low speed mixture screw (L)

slowly clockwise until the speed

starts to drop.

3. Turn the low speed mixture screw (L)

counterclockwise until the speed in-

creases and then starts to drop again.

4. Set the low speed mixture screw (L)

at the midpoint between the two

positions.

Readjust the idle speed (see IDLE

SPEED).

High Speed Mixture -H

CAUTION: Do not operate engine at full

throttle for prolonged periods while mak-

ing high speed adjustments as damage

to the engine can occur. Adjust the high

speed screw 1/16 of a turn at a time. A

1/16 turn is about the width of the slot in

the top of the screw.

1. Allow the engine to idle.

2. Squeeze the throttle trigger fully.

Turn the high speed mixture screw

(H) counterclockwise until it stops.

3. Turn the high speed mixture screw

(H) screw the minimum amount clock-

wise until the engine runs smoothly.

After completing adjustments, check

for acceleration and blade movement

at idle. Reset if necessary.

Acceleration Check

If the engine dies or hesitates instead of

accelerating, turn the low speed mixture

screw (L) counterclockwise until you

have smooth acceleration. It may be

necessary to readjust idle speed. The

blade must not move at idle speed.

CAUTION: If the engine does not op-

erate according to these instructions

after repeating the adjusting steps, do

not use the unit. Take it to your Sears

Service Center or call the Customer

Assistance Helpline at 1-800-235-5878.

steps after each use:

•Allow engine to cool, and secure the

unit before storing or transporting.

•Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated

area where fuel vapors cannot reach

sparks or open flames from water

heaters, electric motors or switches,

furnaces, etc.

•Store unit with all guards in place.

Position unit so that any sharp object

cannot accidentally cause injury.

•Store unit and fuel well out of the

reach of children.

SEASONAL STORAGE

Prepare unit for storage at end of sea-

son or if it will not be used for 30 days

or more.

If your unit is to be stored for a period

of time:

•Clean the entire unit.

•Store in a clean dry area.

• Clean all parts and check for damage.

Have damaged parts repaired or re-

placed by your Sears Service Center.

• Lightly oil external metal surfaces, in-

cluding the blade.

To oil the blade:

•Stop the engine and allow blade to

come to a complete stop.

FUEL SYSTEM

Under FUEUNG ENGINE in the OPERA-

TION section of this manual, see mes-

sage labeled IMPORTANT regarding

the use of gasohol in your engine.

Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alterna-

tive in minimizing the formation of fuel

gum deposits dudng storage. Add stabi-

lizer to gasoline in fuel tank or fuel stor-

age container. Follow the mix instructions

found on stabilizer container. Run engine

at least 5 minutes after adding stabilizer.

Craftsman 40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (air

cooled) is already blended with fuel

stabilizer. If you do not use this Sears

oil, you can add afuel stabilizer to your

fuel tank.

ENGINE

• Remove spark plug and pour 1 tea-

spoon of 40:1,2-cycle engine oil (air

cooled) through the spark plug open-

ing. Slowly pull the starter rope 8 to

10 times to distribute oil.

•Replace spark plug with new one of

recommended type and heat range

(see REPLACE SPARK PLUG section).

• Clean air filter.

• Check entire unit for loose screws,

nuts, and bolts. Replace any dam-

aged, broken, or worn parts.

• At the beginning of the next season,

use only fresh fuel having the proper

gasoline to oil ratio.

OTHER

• Do not store gasoline from one sea-

son to another.

•Replace your gasoline can if it starts

to rust.

emissions control system warranty on

your year 2000-2003 small off-road en-

gine. In California, all new small off-road

engines must be designed, built, and

equipped to meet the State's stringent

anti-smog standards. Sears must war-

rant the emission control system on your

small off-road engine for the pedods of

time listed below provided there has

been no abuse, neglect, or improper

maintenance of your small off-road en-

gine engine. Your emission control sys-

tem includes parts such as the carbure-

tor and the ignition system. Where a

warrantable condition exists, Sears will

repair your small off-road engine engine

at no cost to you. Expenses covered un-

der warranty include diagnosis, parts and

labor. MANUFACTURER'S WARRAN-

TY COVERAGE: If any emissions re-

lated pad on your engine (as listed under

Emissions Control Warranty Parts List) is

defective or a defect in the materials or

workmanship of the engine causes the

failure of such an emission related part,

the part will be repaired or replaced by

Sears. OWNER'S WARRANTY RE-

SPONSIBIUTIES: As the small off-road

engine engine owner, you are responsi-

ble for the performance of the required

maintenance listed in your instruction

manual. Sears recommends that you re-

tain all receipts covering maintenance on

your small off-read engine, but Sears

cannot deny warranty solely for the lack

of receipts or for your failure to ensure

the performance of all scheduled mainte-

nance. As the small off-reed engine en-

gine owner, you should be aware that

Sears may deny you warranty coverage

if your small off-road engine engine or a

part of it has failed due to abuse, ne-

glect, improper maintenance, unap-

proved modifications, or the use of parts

not made or approved by the odginal

equipment manufacturer. You are re-

sponsible for presenting your small off-

read engine to a Sears authorized repair

center as soon as a problem exists.

Warranty repairs should be completed in

areasonable amount of time, not to ex-

ceed 30 days. If you have any ques-

tions regarding your warranty dghts and

nearest authorized service center or call

COMMENCEMENT DATE: The warran-

ty period begins on the date the small

off-read engine is purchased. LENGTH

OF COVERAGE: This warranty shall be

for a period of two years from the initial

date of purchase. WHAT IS COVERED:

PARTS. Repair or replacement of any

warranted part will be performed at no

charge to the owner at an approved

Sears Service Center. If you have any

PANTY PERIOD: Any warranted part

which is not scheduled for replacement

shall be warranted for the period of time

up to the first scheduled replacement

correcto estado de funcionamiento. De

Io contrario, estar& en infracci6n de la

ley. Para el uso normal del dueSo de la

casa, el silenciador y la rejilla antichispa

no requedr&n ning_n servicio. Despu_s

de 50 horas de uso, recomendamos que

al silenciador se le de servicio o sea

substituido por un Centro de Servicio

Se usa el INTERRUPTOR ON/OFF para

detener el motor. Para detener el motor,

mueva el interruptor a la posici6n OFF.

CEBADOR

El CEBADOR ayuda a suministrar

combustible ai motor para facilitar el

arranque cuando el motor estd frio.

Accione el cebador moviendo la palanca

a la posici6n deseada. Vea la secci6n

ARRANQUE DEL MOTOR para obtener la

informaci6n completa sobre el arranque

del motor.

BOMBEADOR

El BOMBEADOR es usado para remover

aire de el carburador yde las I{neas de

combustible y las Ilena de mezcla de

combustible. Esto le permite poner el

motor en mamha con menos tirones de

la cuerda de arranque. Active el

GATILLO ACELERADOR

El GATILLO ACCELERADOR controla la

velocidad del motor. Apriete el gatillo

para m_xima velocidad; sueRe el gatillo

para volver a la marcha lenta.

es extremadamente caliente durante el

uso y despu_s de usar el aparato. No

ANTES DE PONER EN MARCHA EL

ADVERTENClA: Lea atenta-

las reglas de seguridad, no intente

abastecer el aparato de combustible.

ABASTEClMIENTO DEL MOTOR

_ADVERTENClA: Remueva la

tapa del tanque de combustible lenta-

mente al reabastecer combustible.

Este motor est& habilitado para funcionar

con gasolina sin plomo. Antes de com-

enzar con el uso, se deber& mezclar la

gasolina con un aceite de sint_tico de

buena calidad para motores de 2 tiem-

pos enfriados a aire. Recomendamos el

aceite de sint_tico de la marca Crafts-

man. Mezcle la gasolina con el aceite

en la pro porci6n 40:1. (Se obtiene una

proporclon de 40:1 mezclando 3.2

onzas de aceite con cada gal6n de

gasolina sin plomo). NO USE aceite

para autom6viles ni para barcas.

Estos aceites daflar&n el motor. AI

mezclar el combustible, siga las

instrucciones impresas en el recipiente

de aceite.

Una vez ar_adido el aceite a la

gasolina, agite el recipiente

brevemente para asegurarse que el

combustible este completamente

mezclado. Siempre lea y siga las

instrucciones de seguridad que tienen

que vet con el combustible antes de

abastecer el aparato.

IMPORTANTE

La experiencia indica que los combus-

tibles mezclados con alcohol (los

Ilamados gasohol o los que tienen

etanol o metanol) pueden atraer la hu-

medad, Io que puede causar la

separaci6n y la formaci6n de &cidos

durante el almacenaje. La gasolina

&cida puede daSar el sistema de

combustible del motor durante el

almacenaje. Para evitar problemas

con el motor, deber& vaciarse el

sistema de combustible antes de

almacenar el aparato por 30 dias o

m&s. Vacie el tanque de combustible,

ponga el motor en marcha y d_jelo en

marcha hasta que las Ifneas de

combustible y el carburador queden

vacfos. Use combustible fresco la

prbxima temporada.

Nunca use productos de Umpieza de

motor o carburador en el tanque de

combustible ya que de hacerla puede

provocar da5os permanentes.

INSTRUGClONES DE USO

Se recomienda que no opere el motor

por mas de 30 segundos a la velocidad

maxima. Suelte el gatillo del acelerador y

permita que el motor regrese moderada-

mente a la marcha lenta (5 -10 segun-

dos) ser&n suficientes.

PUNTOS IMPORTANTES

•Use la minima velocidad necesaria para

cortar con eficacia y para el

funcionamiento 6ptimo de la recortadora

de setos.

•Nunca intente utilizar esta recortadora

para cortar setos que tengan ramas con

didrnetros superiores a 7/16 de pulgada.

7. i3re firmemente del mango de la

cuerda de arranque basra que el

motor arranque, pero no m&s de 6

tirones. AVISO: Si el motor no ar-

ranca despu_s del sexto tir6n de la

cuerda de arranque (con la palanca

del cebador en la posici6n HALF

CHOKE), verifique que el interruptor

ON/OFF est& en la posicibn ON.

Mueva la palanca del cebador a la

posici6n FULL CHOKE y oprima el

bombeador 6 veces; tire firmemente

del mango de la cuerda de arran-

que otras 2 veces. Mueva la palan-

ca del cebador a la posici6n HALF

CHOKE y tire de la cuerda de arran-

que hasta que el motor se ponga

en marcha, pero no m_s de 6

veces. Si el motor no arranca, pro-

bablemente se encuentre ahogado.

Proceda con la secci6n ARRANQUE

DE MOTOR AHOGADO.

8. Una vez que el motor arranca, per-

mita que el motor marche por 10

segundos, luego mueva la palanca

del cebador a la posici6n OFF

CHOKE. Permita que el motor

marche por otros 30 segundos con

la palanca en la posici6n OFF

CHOKE, entonces suelte el cierre

del acelerador apretando y luego

soltando el gatillo acelerador.

AVISO: Si el motor se cala con la

palanca del cebador en la posici6n

OFF CHOKE, mueva la palanca a la

posici6n HALF CHOKE y tire de la

cuerda de arranque hasta que el

motor se ponga en marcha, pero no

m&s de 6 tirones.

PARA ARRANCAR CON EL MOTOR

CALIENTE

1. Mueva el interrupter ON/OFF a la

posicibn ON.

2. Oprima lentamente el bombeador 6

veces.

3. Mueva la palanca del cebador a la

posici6n HALF CHOKE.

4. Accione el cierre del acelerador

como se instruye el la secci6n AR-

RANQUE DE MOTOR.

AVISO: Mantenga el cierre del acelera-

dor accionado hasta que el motor

arranca.

5. Tire firmemente de la cuerda de ar-

ranque hasta que el motor se pon-

ga en marcha, pero no m&s de 5

veces.

6. Permita que el motor marche pot 10

segundos, luego, mueva la palanca

del cebador a la posici6n OFF

CHOKE.

7. Suelte el cierre del acelerador awe-

tando y soltando el gatillo acelera-

dor.

AVISO: Si el motor no se ha puesto en

marcha, tire de la cuerda de arranque

otras 5 veces. Si el motor no se pone

en marcha, probablemente se encuentre

ahogado. Proceda con la secci6n

ARRANQUE DE MOTOR AHOGADO.

ARRANQUE DE MOTOR AHOGADO

Un motor que se encuentra ahogado se

podrd poner en marcha moviendo el

interruptor ON/OFF a la posici6n ON y la

palanca del cebador a la posici6n OFF

CHOKE accione el cierre del acelerador

como se muestra en la secci6n PAPA

ARPANCAR CON MOTOR FRIO; luego, tire

de la cuerda de arranque para aclarar el

motor del exceso de combustible. Que el

motor se ponga en marcha podr_

significar que se tire de la cuerda de

arranque muchas veces, dependiendo

cu&n ahogado se encuentre el motor.

Limpie el filtro de aire:

Los filtros de aire sucios disminuyen la

vida Qtil y el rendimiento del motor e

incrementan el consumo de

combustible y de emiciones nocivas.

Limpie siempre el filtro de aire despu_s

de cada 5 horas de uso.

1. Limpie ta tapa y la superficie alrede-

dor de la tapa para evitar que caiga

suciedad o desechos en el carbura-

dor cuando se saque la tapa.

2. Retire las piezas como se ilustra.

AVISO: Para evitar peligro de incendio y

de emiciones evaporativas nocivas, no

limpie el filtro de aire con gasolina ni cu-

alquier otto solvente inflammable.

3. Limpie el filtro con agua y jabbn.

4. Permita que el filtro se seque.

5. Aplique varias gotas de aceite al fil-

tro; exprima el filtro para distribuir el

aceite.

6. Reponga las piezas.

INSPECClONE LA REJILLA ANTI-

CHISPA Y EL SILENClADOR

ADVERTENCIA: El silenciador

e.n este, producto contiene las substan-

c=as qu=m_cas que el estado de Califor-

nia reconoce como causantes de

c_mcer.

A medida que se use el aparato, el si-

lenciador y la rejilla antichispas se van

carbonizando. Es necesario sacar la

carbonizacibn para evitar el riesgo de

incendio o afectar el rendimiento del

motor.

Para el uso normal del duer_o de la

casa, el silenciador y la rejitla

antichispa no requerir_,n ningun

servicio. Despu_s de 50 horas de uso,

recomendamos que al silenciador se le

de servicio o sea substituido por un

Centro de Servicio Sears.

CAMBIE LA BUJIA

Deberd cambiarse la bujga anualmente

para asegurarse que el motor arranque

f&cilmente y tenga un mejor

rendimiento. Ajuste la separacibn de

los electrodos a 0,025 de pulgada. El

encendido es fijo e inalterable.

1. Gire y saque la cubierta de la buj{a.

2. Retire la bujla del cilindro y desk-

chela.

3. Cdmbiela por una buj{a Champion

RCJ-7Y y ajuste la bujfa nueva con

una Ilave de cubo de 3/4 de pulgada

(10 a 12 libras/pie).

4. Instale nuevamente la cubierta de

la buj{a.

CAMBIE EL FILTRO DE

COMBUSTIBLE

Para cambiar el filtro de combustible,

vacie por completo el tanque de com-

bustible, entonces, remueva la tapa Y

retentor del tanque. Tire del filtro en el

tanque y remu_valo de la Ifnea de

combustible. Instale un filtro de

combustible nuevo en la I_nea de

combustible y vuelva a instalar las

piezas.

Recomendamos que todo servicio y

ajuste no descrito en esta manual sea

efectuado por su Centro de Servicio

Sears.

AJUSTE AL CARBURADOR

_ADVERTENClA: El cuchilla se

mover& durante la mayor parte de este

procedimiento. Use su equipo protec-

tor y observe todas las precauciones

de seguridad. AI hacer ajustes, utilice

un destornillador corto para mantener

sus manos detr_s del protector de

mano y lejos de la cuchilla. Verifique la

marcha lenta despu6s de cada ajuste

de mezcla. La cuchilla no debe mov-

erse a la marcha lenta.

El ajuste del carburador es de

primordial importancia. Si se hace

incorrectamente, puede da_ar tanto el

motor como el carburador permanent-

emente. Si necesita ayuda o no est&

seguro de como hacer este proced-

imiento, o Ilame el n_mero de Ayuda al

Consumidor al 1-800-235-5878.

El combustible vencido, el filtro de aire

sucio, el filtro de conbustible sucio oel

motor ahogado pueden dar la

impresi6n de carburaci6n desajustada.

Verifique estas condiciones antes de

hacer cualquier ajuste al carburador.

• El cuchilla se mueve en la marcha

lenta. Vea MARCHA LENTA bajo el

procedimiento de ajuste.

•El motor no anda en mamha lenta.

miento de ajuste.

•El motor se para o se cala cuando

debe acelerar. Vea VERIFICAClON DE

• P6rdida de potencia. Vea AJUSTE DE

LA MEZCLA (L o H) bajo el proced-

imiento de ajuste.

Hay tres tornillos de ajuste en le carbu-

rador. El tornillo de ajuste de mezcla

de bajas revoluciones marcado con la

letra L, y el tornillo de ajuste de mezcla

de altas revoluciones est& marcado

con la letra H. El tercer tornillo es la

tornillo de ajuste de la marcha lenta.

PROCEDIMIENTO DE AJUSTE

PRECAUCION: AI hacer ajustes no

Procedimiento Inicial

1. Gire el tomillos de ajuste de mezcla

(L y H) hacia la izquierda hasta que

se detenga.

2. Gire el tomillo de marcha lenta ha-

cia la derecha hasta que se deten-

ga. Luego, gfrelo hacia la izquierda

4 vueltas y media.

3. Ponga el motor en marcha, dejelo

en marcha por 3 minutos, variando

la velocidad con el gatillo del acel-

erador; luego, proceda a ajustar los

tornillos de acuerdo alas instruc-

clones indicadas en la siguiente

secci6n. Si el funcionamiento del

motor es acceptable con las posi-

clones anteriores, no hat& falta hac-

er m_s ajustes. Si el motor no ar-

ranca, yea la TABLA DIAGNOSTICA.

Marcha Lenta

Deje el motor en marcha lenta. Si la

cuchilla se mueve, la marcha lenta es

demasiado r&pida. Si el motor se para,

la marcha lenta es demasiado lenta.

•Gire el tornillo de marcha lenta hacia

la derecha para aumentar las revolu-

clones del motor.

• Gire el tornillo de marcha lenta hacia

la izquierda para reducir las revolu-

clones del motor.

AADVERTENCIA: Verifique la

marcha lenta despu_s de cads ajuste.

La cuchilla no deber_ moverse en

marcha lenta para evitar accidentes de

gravedad al usuario o a otras

personas.

Mezcla de Bajas Revoluciones "L"

1. Deje el motor en marcha lenta.

2. Gire el tomillo de las bajas revolu-

clones "L" hacia la derecha hasta

que la velocidad empiece a dismi-

nuir.

3. Gire el tornillo de las bajas revolu-

clones "L" hacia la izquierda hasta

que la velocidad aumente y luego

empiece adisminuir nuevamente.

4. Coloque el tomillo para bajas revo-

luciones "L" en un punto intermedio

entre las dos posiciones anteriores.

Vuelva a ajustar la marcha lenta (vea

MARCHA LENTA).

Mezcla de Altas Revoluciones "H"

PRECAUCION: No use el motor con el

aceleradora fondo por prolongados

periodos de tiempo mientras se

encuentre haciendo los adjustes de

alias revoluciones y que da_os al

motor podrian ocurrir. Ajuste el tornillo

de altas revoluciones por incrementos

de 1/16 de vuelta cada vez. Un 1/16 de

vuelta es alrededor del mismo di_me-

tro que la renura que se encuentra en

la parte superior del tomillo.

1. Deje el motor en marcha lenta.

2. Apdete el gatillo acelerador comple-

tamente. Gire el tomillo de altas re-

voluciones "H" hacia la izquierda

hasta que se detenga.

3. Gire el tornillo de altas revoluciones

"H" la cantidad minima permitida

hacia la derecha hasta que el motor

marche sin problemas.

Despu_s de terminar ajustes, verifique

de aceleraci6n y movimiento de la cu-

chilla en la marcha lenta. Reajuste en

caso de necesidad.

Verificacibn de Aceleraci6n

Si et motor trata de parar en vez de

acelerar, gire el tornillo de la mezcla

para bajas revoluciones "L" en contra

del sentido del reloj hasta que la acel-

eraci6n sea estable y ning0n movi-

miento de la cuchilla durante marcha

lenta. Puede ser necesario reajustar la

marcha lenta, La cuchilla no deberd

moverse en marcha lenta.

PRECAUClON: Si el motor no marcha

de acuerdo con estas instrucciones des-

pu_s de repetir los pasos de ajuste, no

use el aparato. Udvelo a su Centro de

Servicio Sears o Ilame al nL_merode

AADVERTENCIA: Realice los

siguientes pasos despu_s de cada uso:

•Permita que el motor se enfHe y fije

bien el aparato antes de guardarlo o

transportarlo.

• Guarde el aparato y el combustible

en un lugar bien ventilado donde los

vapores del combustible no puedan

entrar en contacto con chispas ni

llamas abiertas provenientes de

calentadores de agua, motores o

interruptores el6ctricos, calefactores

centrales, etc.

• Guarde el aparato con todos los

protectores en su lugar y col6quelo

de modo que las piezas filosas no

puedan causar heridas por

accidente.

• Guarde el aparato y el combustible

enun lugar seguro y completamente

fuera del alcance de los niSos.

SUPERFICIES EXTERNAS

Prepare el aparato para almacenarlo al

final de la temporada o si no Io va a

usar por m&s de 30 dias.

Siva a almacenar el aparato durante

un periodo largo de tiempo:

•Limpie el aparato por completo.

• Almacene en un &rea limpia y seco.

•Limpie todas las piezas y verifique

que no haya dafios. Permita que

piezas daSadas sean reparadas o

reemplazadas por su Centro de

Servicio Sears.

• Aplique una peque_a cantidad de

aceite alas superficies extemas

met&licas, inclusive la cuchilla.

Para aplicar aceite a la cuchilla,

haga Io siguiente:

•Detenga el motor y permita que la

cuchilla se detenga per completo.

• Aseg_rese de que el interruptor ON/

OFF est& en posici6n OFF.

• Desconecte el cable de la bujla.

• Aplique una pequefia cantidad de

aceite de m&quina alrededor del borde

de la banda superior corno se ilustra.

SISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLE

Yea el mensaje marcado como

IMPORTANTE, que se refiere al uso de

combustibles con mezcla de alcohol en

su aparato, en la secci6n de USO, bajo

ABASTECIMIENTO DEL MOTOR en este

manual.

Los estabilizadores de combustible son

una altemativa aceptable para minimizar

la formaci6n de depbsitos de gorna du-

rante el almacenaje. Afiada estabilizador

a la gasolina en el tanque de combusti-

ble o en el recipiente para almacenar el

mismo. Siga las instrucciones de mezcla

que se encuentran impresas en el

envase. Ponga el motor en marcha y

d_jelo en marcha por unos 5 minutes

despu_s de haberle puesto estabilizador.

El aceite Craftsman 40:1 para motores

de 2 tiempos (enfriados a aire) viene

mezclado con estabilizador de

combustible. Si no se usa este aceite

de Sears, usted podr& a5adir estabili-

zador al tanque de combustible.

MOTOR

• Retire la bujia yvierta una cucharadi-

ta de aceite 40:1 para motores a 2

tiempos (enfriados a aire) por la

abertura para la bujia. Lentamente,

tire de la cuerda de arranque de 8 a

10 veces para distribuir el aceite.

• Cambie la bujia por una nueva del tipo

y de la gama de ca]or recomendados

(yea la seccibn CAMBIE LA BUJIA).

•Limpie el filtro de aire.

•Examine toda el aparato para verificar

que no haya tornillos, tuercas ni per-

nes sueltos. Carnbie todas las piezas

dahades, quebradas o gastadas.

tisfacer las rigurosas normas antihumo

que posee el estado. Sears deber&

garantizar el sistema de control de emi-

si6n en su m&quina de motor pequeSo

para uso fuera de carretera por los per-

iodos de tiempo que explicamos a con-

tinuaci6n y con la condici6n de que su

m&quina de motor pequeSo para uso

fuera de carretera no haya sufrido

ningSn tipo de abuso, negligencia o

mantenimiento inapropiado. Su siste-

ma de control de emisi6n incluye pie-

zas tales como el carburador y el siste-

ma de ignici6n. Donde exista una con-

dici6n que requiera reparaci6n bajo ga-

rantia, Sears reparara gratis su motor

pequer_o para uso fuera de carretera.

Los gatos cubiertos bajo la garantla

incluyen el diagn6stico, las piezas y

labor. CUBIERTA DE GARAN-

TIA DEL FABRICANTE: Si cualquier

Como dueSo de una m,_quina de motor

pequeSo para uso fuera de carretera,

usted deber& contar con el conoci-

miento de que Sears puede negar la

cubierta bajo garantla si su m&quina

de motor pequeSo para uso fuera de

carretera o alguna pieza de la misma

ha dejado de funcionar debido al abu-

so, negligencia, mantenimiento inapro-

piado, modificaciones no aprobadas o

el uso de piezas que no hayan sido

fabricadas o aprobadas por el fabri-

cante original del equipo. Es respon-

sabilidad suya el Ilevar su m&quina de

retera a un centro de reparaci6n autori-

zado Sears tan pronto como se pres-

ente el problema. Las reparaciones

bajo garantla deberdn ser completadas

en un pedodo de tiempo razonable,
