Read the operator's manual carefully. Be thoroughly familiar with the controls and the proper use of the snow thrower. Know how to stop the snow thrower and disengage the controls quickly. Never allow children to operate the snow thrower and keep them away while it is operating, Never allow adults to operate the snow th rower without proper instruction. DO not carry passengers. 3. Keep the area of operation clear of all persons, particularly small children, and pets. 4. Exercise caution to avoid slipping or falling, especially when operating in reverse. PREPARATION 1. Thoroughly inspect the area where the snow thrower is to be used and remove all doormats, sleds, boards, wires, and other foreign objects. 2. Disengage all clutches and shift before starting the engine (motor). 3. Do not operate the snow thrower without wearing adequate winter outer garments. Wear footwear that will improve tooting on slippery surfaces. 4. Handle fuel with care; it is highly flammable. (a) Use an approved (b) Never remove fuel tank cap or add fuel to a running engine or hot engine. (c) Fill fuel tank outdoors with extreme Never fill fuel tank indoors. OPERATION 1, Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts, Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times, 2. Exercise extreme caution when operating on or crossing gravel drives, walks, or roads° Stay alert for hidden hazards or traffic. 3o After striking a foreign object, stop the engine (motor), remove the wire from the spark plug, disconnect the cord on electric motors, thoroughly inspect the snow thrower for any damage, and repair thedamagebefore restarting and operating the snow thrower. 4_ If the snow thrower should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the (motor) and check immediately forthe cause, Vibration is generally a warning of trouble, & Stoptheengine (motor) wheneveryou leavethe operating position, before unclogging the auger/ impeller housing or discharge guide, and when making any repairs, adjustments, orinspectionso 6. When cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain the auger/impeller and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire and keep the wire away from the plug to prevent accidental starting. and wipe up (e) Never store fuel or snow thrower with fuel in the tank inside of a building where fumes may reach an open flame or spark. (f) 7o Never attempt to make any adjustments while the engine (motor) is running (except when specifically recommended by the manufacturer). into neutral fuel container. Never operate the snow thrower without proper guards, plates or other safety protective devices in place. 11. Never operate the snow thrower near glass enclosures, automobiles, window wells, drop-offs, and the like without proper adjustment of the snow discharge angle. Keep children and pets away° 12. Do not overload the machine capacity attempting to clear snow at too fast a rate. by 13. Never operate the snow t hrower at high transport speeds on slippery surfaces_ Look behind and use care when backing. 14. U"Hli TO INSTALL THE UPPER AND CRANK O HANDLE ASSEMBLY Lift the upper handle of the snow thrower and set behind the unit @ Make surecontrotcabfes handles O m"H' I'L '.i..,...lli. Hi II 11t32 are not caught between the Remove the screws, llatwashers, Iockwashers, and hex nuts securing the shifter piale in the lower holes of the lower handle and move shift lever to 3rd gear @ Install upper handle to the lower handle Be sure to position the upper handle so that the headlight is on the right hand side Upper handle should be to the outside of the lower handle and shifter plate to the inside 5 16 SPLIT LOCKWASH_ FIG. 4A NOTE: Unless you have the assistance of another person, it may be easier to install one side of the handle at a time • Using the hardware (screws. flatwashers, tockwashers and hex nuts) removed from _he shilter plate earlier, attach upper and lower handles in upper two holes (See Fig 4A) Do not tighten ADJUST NUTS TO MOVE EYE BOLT rN OR OUT O Using the hardware (screw, ftatwasher, Iockwasher and locknut) supplied in the parts bag, attach the shifter plale and upper and lower handle in the lower right hand hole • FLATWASHER EYE Remove the 3/8" nylon Iocknut and flatwasher trom the eye boll assembly Check to make sure the two 318" jam nuts are tight The jam nuts should be 2 75 inches from the end of the eye bolt (Fig 4B) BOLT N',tLON LOCKNUT Remove the plastic bag, plastic cap, cotter pin and washer from the crank assembly and set aside (See Fig 5) O ® Rotate the notched section of the discharge chute toward the crank-adjusting rod (See Fig 5} Install the wormed end of the crank through the hole in the crank adjusting rod and secure the end with the flat washer and cotter pin, as shown in Fig 5 ® Bend the ends of the cotter pin around the rod and reinstall the plastic cap (See Fig 5) €, Install the chute crank eye bolt through the lower handle hole on the left hand side Make sure that the left side of the shifter plate is installed over the threaded end ot the eye boft install the llatwasher, lockwasher and tocknut (See Fig 4B) @ Tighten the eye bolt installed earlieT; keep eye in line with the rod while tightening lhe inside nut securely @ Tighten all hardware securely O Rotate the chute crank fully clockwise and luily counter-clockwise The discharge chute should _otale fully to the outer diameter ot the wom_ and should clear approximately 1/8 (See Fig 5t = PLASTIC CAP "_ X '=HHH "% _', COTTER-_P)N -''''/ NOTCHED SECTION " "_,,. )t/8 IN_ CLEARANCE_ _ LATWASNER / | v CRANK ADJUSTING ROD \ \ /"/_'_.. _..__/'_,___TS WORM I/2 INCH FIGo 5 !! Use of a harder bolt will destroy the protection provided by the shear bolt. Be sure all moving parts have stopped.. • Lubricate the auger shaft zerk fitting (see the Customer Responsibilities section on pages 15-16) ® Atignthe hote in the auger with the hote in the auger shaft.. Also during storage, alcohot blended gasotine t hat uses ethanol or methanol (sometimes called gasohol) attracts water_ It acts on the gasoline to form acids which damage the engine, e e To remove gasoline, run the engine until the tank is empty and the engine stops Then drain remaining gasoline from carburetor by pressing upward on bowl drain located on the bottom of carburetor (See Fig 36) e Lubricating the piston/cylinder area This can be done by first removing the spark plug and squirting a few drops of clean engine oil into the spark plug hole Then cover the spark plug hole with a rag to absorb oil spray Next, rotate the engine by pulling the starter rope fully out two or three times Finally, reinstall spark plug and attach spark plug wire e Thoroughly clean the snow thrower e Lubricate a!l _ubrication points (see the Customer Responsibilities section on pages 15-16) e Be sure that all nuts, bolts and screws are securely fastened Inspect all visible moving parts for damage, breakage and wear Replace il necessary ® Touch up all rusted or chipped paint surfaces; sand lightly before painting e Cover the bare metal parts of the blower housing auger and the impeller with rust preventative, such as a spray lubricant e Star! the engine and run at SLOW (idle) speed until the engine slops from lack of fuel OTHER e If possible, store your snow thrower indoors and cover il to give protection from dust and dirt e !tthe machine must be stored outdoors, block upthe snow thrower to be sure the entire machine is off the ground You can keep your engine in good operating condition during storage by: Changing oil (See page t6) STORAGE NOTE: A yearly checkup or tune-up by a SEARS Service Center is a good way to insu re that your snow thrower will provide maximum performance for the next season If you do not want to remove gasoline, a fuel stabilizer (such as Craftsman FueI Stabilizer No 33500) may be added to any gasoline left in the tank to minimize gum deposits and acids II the tank is almost empty, mix stabilizer with fresh gasoline in a separate container and add some to the tank ALWAYS FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON STABILIZER CONTAINER, THEN RUN ENGINE AT LEAST 10 MINUTES AFTER STABILIZER IS ADDED TO ALLOW MIXTURE TO REACH CARBURETOR.
