- After the first two (2) hours of mowing, change the oi!,
and every 25 hours thereafter. You may need to
change the oil more often under dusty, dirty conditions.
GAS (See Fig. 5)
-Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regular unleaded
gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane. (Use of leaded
gasoline will increase carbon and ieadoxide deposits
and reduce valve life). Do not mix oilwith gasoline.
Purchase fuel in quantities that can be used within 30
days to assure fue! freshness.
WARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blended
fuels (called gasohoJ or using ethanol or methanol) can
attract moisture which leads _oseparation and formation of
acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel
system of,an engine while in storage. To avoid engine
problems, the fuel system should be emptied before stor-
age of 30 days or longer. Drain the fuel tank, start the
engine and let it run until fue! lines and carburetor are
empty. Use fresh fuel next season, See StOrage Instruc-

O ERATION
MOWING TIPS
,Under certain conditions, such as very tall grass, itmay
be necessary to raise the height of 3ut to reduce
pushing effort and to keep from over!oading the engine
and leaving clumps of grass clippings.
= For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the width of cut by
overlapping previousry cut path and mow slowly.
For better grass bagging and most cutting conditions,
the engine speed should beset in the fast (,_) position.
For side discharge lawn mowers, cutting in a Counter-
c ockw se drect on, start ng at the outside of the: area
to be cut, spreads grass clippings more evenly and
puts less load on the engine. To keep clippings off of
walkways, flower beds, etc., make the first cuts in a
clockwise direction. FIG. 6
Pores in cloth grass catchers can become filled with dirt
and dust with use and catchers will collect less grass.
To prevent this, regularly hose catcher off with water
and et dry before using.
Keep top of engine around starter clear and clean of
grass clippings and chaff. This will help engine airflow
and extend engine life.
MULCHING MOWING TIPS
IMPORTANT: FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEP
MOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS AND
TRASH,, CLEAN UNDERSIDE OF MOWER HOUSING
AFTER EACH USE. SEE "CLEANING" IN CUSTOMER
RESPONSIBILITIES SECTION OF THIS MANUAL
The special mulching blade will recut the grass clip-
pings many times and reduce them in size so that as
they fall onto the !awn they will disperse into the grass
and not be noticed, Atso, the mulched grass will
biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn.
Always mulch with your highest engine (blade) speed
as this wi!! provide the best recutting action of the
blades,
Avoid cutting your tawn when it is wet. Wet grass tends
to form clumps and interferes with the mulching action.
The best time to mow your lawn is the early afternoon.
At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut area
will not be exposed to the direct sun.
For best results, adjust the lawn mower cutting height
so that the lawn mower cuts off only the top one-third
of the grass blades (See Fig. 6). If the fawn is
overgrown it will be necessary to raise the height of cut
to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading
the engine and leaving clumps of mulched grass. For
extremely heavy mulching, reduce your width of cut,
mow slowly and raise the rear of the lawn mower one
wheel adjuster setting higher than the front.
Certain types of grass and grass conditions may re-
quire that an area be mulched a second time to com-
pletely hide the clippings, When doing a second cut,
mow across or perpendicula r tO the first cut path.
Change your cutting pattern from week to week. Mow
north to south one week then change to east to west the
.next week. This will help prevent matting and graining
of the la.wn.

FUEL SYSTEM
IMPORTANT: IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT GUM
DEPOSITS FROM FORMING IN ESSENTIAL FUEL
SYSTEM PARTS SUCH AS CARBURETOR, FUEL FILTER,
FUEL HOSE, OR TANK DURING STORAGE. ALSO.
EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT ALCOHOL BLENDED
FUELS (CALLED GASOHOL OR ,USING ETHANOL OR
METHANOL) CAN ATTRACT MOISTURE WHICH LEADS
TO SEPARATION AND FORMATION OF ACIDS DURING
STORAGE. ACIDIC GAS CAN DAMAGE THE FUEL
SYSTEM OF AN ENGINE WHILE IN STORAGE.

m
o
Drain the fuel tank:
Start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and
carburetor are empty.
Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the
fuel tank or permanent damage may occur.
Use fresh fuel next season.
NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative in
minimizingthe formation of fuel gum deposits during stor-
age. Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage
container. Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer
container: Run engine at least 10 minutes after adding
stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reach the carburetor, Do
not drain the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.
ENGINE OIL
Drain oi! (withengine warm) and replace with clean engine
oil (See "ENGINE" in the Customer Responsibilities
section of this manual).
CYMNDER
,Remove spark plug.
=Pour one ounce (29 ml) of oil through spark plug hole
into cylinder.
= Pull starter handle slowly a few times to distribute oil.
Replace with new spark plug.
OTHER
Do not store gasoline from one season to another.
- Replace your gasoline can if your can starts to rust.
Rust and/or dirt in your gasoline will cause problems.
If possible, store your unit indoors and cover it to give
protection from dust and dirt,
- Cover your unil with a suitable protective cover that
does not retain moisture. Do not use plastic. Plastic
cannot breathe which allows condensa] ion to form and
will cause your unit to rust.
IMPORTANT: NEVER COVER MOWER WHILE ENGINE
AND EXHAUST AREAS ARE STILL WARM.
CAUTION: Never store the lawn mower
with gasoline in the tank inside a build-
ing where fumes may reach an open
flame or spark, Amlowthe engine to coo_
