For two years from date of purchase, when this Craftsman Lawn Mower is maintained,
lubricated, and tuned up according to the operating and maintenance instructions in the
owner's manual, Sears will repair free of charge any defect in material or workmanship°
if this Craftsman Lawn Mower is used for commercial or rental purposes, this warranty
applies for only 90 days from the date of purchase.
This Warranty does not cover:
• Expendable items which become worn during normal use, such as rotary mower
blades, blade adapters, belts, air cleaners and spark plug.
• Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bent crankshafts and the failure to maintain the equipment according to the instructions corn
tained in the owner's manual.
Warranty service is available by returning the Craftsman power mower to the nearest
Sears Service CentedDepartment in the United State& This warranty applies only while

OPERATION:
• Keep youreyes and mind on yourmower
and the area being cut. Do not let other
interests distract you.
, Do not mow wet or slippery grass. Never
run white operating your mower,.Always
be sure of your footing -- keep a firm
hold on the handles and walk.
• Do r}ot put hands or feet near or under
rotating parts. Keep clear of the discharge
opening at afl times.,
• Always stop the engine whenever you
leave or are not using your mower, or
before crossing driveways, walks, roads,
and any gravel--covered areas.
• Never direct discharge of material toward
bystanders nor' allow anyone near the
mower while you are operating it.
• Before cleaning, inspecting, or repairing
your mower, stop the engine and make
absolutely sure the blade and all moving
parts have stopped, Then disconnect the
spark plug wire and keep it away from the
spark plug to prevent accidental starting.
• Do not continue to run your mower if you
hit a foreign objecL Follow the procedure
outlined above, then repair any damage
before restarting and operating you

• Do not change the governor settings or
overspeed Ihe engine. Engine damage or
personal injury may result.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR LAWN
MOWER
TO UNFOLD HANDLE
IMPORTANT: Unfoldhandles carefully so
as not to pinch or damage control cables_
• Raise handles until lower handle section
locks into place in mowing position,
• Remove protectivepadding, raise upper
handle section into place on lower
handles and tighten both handle knobs°
• Remove handle padding holding
operator presence control bar to upper
handle,_
- Your lawn mower handte can be
adjusted for your mowing comfort. Refer
to "Adjust Handle" in the Sen/ice and
Adjustment section of this manual

TO INSTALL ATTACHMENTS

GAS
• Fill fuel tank Use fresh, clean, regular
unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87
octane (Use of leaded gasoline will
increase carbon and lead oxide deposits
and reduce valve life) Do not mix oil
with gasoline Purchase fuel in quanti
ties that can be used within 30 days to
assure fuel freshness
IMPORTANT: WHEN OPERATING IN
TEMPERATURES BELOW 32°F(0°C), use
fresh, clean winter grade gasoline to help
insure good cold weather starting°
WARNING: Experience indicates that
alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or
using ethanol or methanol) can attract
moisture which leads to separation and
formation of acids during storage Acidic
gas can damage the fuel system of an
engine while in storage To avoid engine
problems, the fuel system should be
emptied before storage of 30 days or
longer Drain the gas tank, start the
engine and let it run until the fuel lines and
carburetor are empty Use fresh fuel next
season See Storage Instructions for
additional information Never use engine
or carburetor c{e_ner products in the fuel
tank or permanent damage may occur
CAUTION: FIlEto bottom of gas tank filler
neck Do not overfill. Wipe off any spilled

TO START ENGINE
• To start a coldengine,push primer five (5)
times before tryingto start Use a firmpush
This step is not usually necessary when
startingan engine which has already run for
a few minutes
• Hold operator presence control bar down to
the handle and pull starter handle quickly
Do not allow starter rope to snap back
• To stop engine, releaseoperatorpresence
control bar
NOTE: In cooler weatheritmay be necessary
to repeat priming steps°In warmer weather
over primingmay cause flooding and engine
will not start If you do flood engine,wait a few
minutes before attemptingto start and do not
repeat primingsteps
MOWING TIPS
• Under certain conditions such as very tail
grass, it may be necessary to raisethe
height of cut to reduce pushing effortand to
keep from overloadingthe engine and
leaving clumps of grass clippings
• For extremely heavy cutting,reduce the
widthof cut and raisethe rearof the lawn
mower housing one (1) wheel adjuster
se_ng higherthan the front for better
discharge of grass
• When using a reardischarge lawnmower in
moist, heavy grass, clumpsof cut grass
may not enter the grass catcher Reduce
ground speed (pushingspeed) and/or run
the lawn mower over the area a second
time.
• if a traii of grassclippingsis left on the right
side of a rear discharge lawn mower, mow
in a c_ockwisedirection with a small overlap
to collect the clippings on the next pass
° Keep top of engine around starterclearand
clean of grass clippings and chaff. This will
help engine air flow and extend engine life
• Pores in cloth grass catchers can become
filled with dirt and dust with use and
catcherswill coUectlessgrass To prevent
this, regularlyhose catchers off with water
and let dry before using

MULCHING MOWINGTIPS
IMPORTANT: For best performance,
keep mower housing free of built-up grass
and trash,. Clean UNDERSIDE OF
MOWER HOUSING after each use..See
"Cleaning" in CUSTOMER
RESPONSIBILITIES sec_on ofthis
manual.
• The special mulchingblade will recurthe
grass clippings manytimes and reduce
them in sizeso that asthey fall onto the
lawn theywill disperseinto the grass and
not be noticed. Also, the mulchedgrass will
blodegrade quicklyto provide nutrientsfor
the lawn. Alwaysmulch with your highest
engine (blade)speed as thisv_llprovidethe
best recuttingactionofthe blades.
° Avoid cutting your lawnwhen it iswet..Wet
grass tends toform clumps and interferes
with the mulching action.The best time to

mow your lawn is theearly afternoon,At this
time the grass has dried and the newlycut
area will not be exposedto the directsun_
• For best results,adjustthe lawn mower
cutting height so thatthe lawn mower cuts
off only thetop one-thirdof the grassblades.
If the lawnis overgrownitwill be necessap]
to raise theheight ol cut to reducepushing
effort and to keep from overloadingthe
engine and leavingclumps of mulched
grass_For extreme_jheavy mulching,
reduce your width of cut, mow stowiyand
raise the rearof the lawn mower onewheel

across or perpendicularto the first cul path..
, Change your cuttingpattem from week to
week. Mow north to south one week then
change to east to west the next week, This

The key must be in good condition to work
properly.Replace adapter if damaged°
TO REPLACE BLADE
• Positionthe blade adapter on the engine
crankshaft. Be sure keyin adapter and
keyway in crankshaft are aligned.
• Positionblade on the blade adapter
aligningthe two (2) holes in the blade with
the raised lugs on the adapter.
. Be surethe t_ling edge is up toward the
engine.

TO SHARPEN BLADE
Care should be taken tokeep the blade
balanced An unbalancedblade wil_cause
eventualdamage to lawn mower or engine
• The blade can be sharpenedwith a file or
on a grinding wheel Donot attempt to
sharpen whileon the mower
• To check btade balance,d_e a nailIntoa
beam or wall Leave about oneInch of the
straight nail exposed Place centerholeof
blade over the head of the nai! If blade Is
balanced it shouldremain{na horizonta!
position ifeither end of the blade moves
downward, sharpen the heavy end unt_ithe
blade is balanced

Change the otl after every 25 hours of opera*
tion or at least once a year if the lawn mower
is not used for 25 hours in one year
Check the crankcase oil level before
starting the engine and after each five (5)
hours of continuous use° Tighten oil plug
securely each time you check the oil level
TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL
NOTE: Before tipping lawn mower to drain
oil, drain fuel tank by running engine until
fuel tank is empty
• Disconnect spark plug wire from spark
plug and place wire where it cannot

REAR DEFLECTOR
The rear deflector, attached between the
rear wheels of your lawn mower, is
providedto minimize the possibilitythat
objectswiltbe thrownout the rear of the
lawn mower into the operator's mowing
position.
If the rear deflector becomes damaged, it
should be replaced,
TO ADJUST HANDLE
Your lawn mower handle can be raised or
lowered for your mowing comfort. Four
(4) positions are available: high, medium
high, medium low and fow Handles are
shipped mounted in the medium low

CLEANING
IMPORTANT: For best performance,
keep mower housing free of built--up
grass and trash° Clean underside of
mower housing after each use_
CAUTION: Disconnect spark plug wire
from spark plug and place wire where it
cannot come in contact with the spark

scraping to remove build--up of grass

IMPORTANTE: Es importante evitar que se
lormen depositos do goma en partes
fundamentales del sistema de combustibletales
come el carbtirador,el liltm del combustible, la
manguera del combustible o en el eslanque
durante el almacenamiento.. La experincia
tamblen endica qua los combustibles
Mezclados con alcohol (conocido come gasohol
o que tienen eianoI e metanot) pueden atraer
humedad, lo queconduce a la separacion
y a la
[ormacien de acidos durante el
almacenamiento La gasetina aedica puede
danat el sistema de combustible de un nvater
durante el periodo de almacenamiento

• Haga arrancar el motor y d_ielo tuncionar
basra que las ttneas del combustible y el

catburador o del motor en el estanque de

• Remueva la bujia.
- Vacle una onza (29 m!) de aceite a tray,s del
agujero de ta bujfa en et cilindm.
• Tire la maniila de ananque lenlamente unas
cuantas veces para distffbuir el aceite.
• Vuelva a montar la nueva bujfa.
OTROS
•

No guarde la gasolina de una temporada a la
otfa.
• Cambte el envase do ]a gasolina si se
empieza a oxidar La oxidaci6n y/o la mugre
en su gasolina producir_nproblemas.
• Si st posible,guarda su unidad en un recinto
certado y ct_bralapara protegeda contra el
potvo y [a mugre
