WORK AREA
• Keep your work area clean and well lit, Cluttered

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
•Double Insulated tools are equipped with a polar-
ized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This
plug wi(I fit in a polarized out(st only one way. If the
plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug.
If it still does not fit, contact • qualified eleoVldan
to install e polarized out(eL Do nat change the plug
in any way. Double insulation[] eliminatesthe need
for the three-wire grounded power cord and grounded
power supplysystem.
•Avoid body contact wlth grounded surfaces such
as pipes, radiators, range_, and rstrlperatore. There
Is an Increasedriskof electricshock Ifyour body Is
grounded.
•Don't expose power tools to rein or wet conditions`
Water enteringapower tool will Increase the riskof

•Do nat abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry
the tools or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep cord
away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts.
Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged
cords increasethe risk of electricshock.
•When operating s power tool outside, use an outdoor
exterBIon cord marked '=W-A"or =If_. Thesecords

PERSONAL SAFETY
•Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use com-
men sense when operating s power tool. Do not
use tool white tired or under the influence of drugs,
alcohol, or medication. A momentof inattentionwhite

•Dress properly. Do notweer loose clothing or
jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your heir, clothing,
end gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes,
jewelry, or long hair can be caught inmoving parts.
•Avoidaccidental etarUng. Be sure switch le off
before plugging In. Carryingtoolswithyourfinger on
the switchorpluggingin toolsthat havethe switchon
invitesaccidents.
•Remove adjusting keys or wrenches before tuming
the tool on. A wrench or a key that is leftattached to a
rotating part of the toolmay resultin persocaJiniury.
•Do not overreach. Keep proper footing end balance
at all times. Properfooting and balance en_b[asbetter
con_olofthetooSin unexpectedsituations.
•Use sefetyequipment. Nwsyewear eye protection.
Dustmask, nonskidsafetyshoes, hard hat, or hearing
protectionmust be usedfor appropriate conditions.
•Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long
hair. Loose clothes,jewelry,or long hair can be drawn
intoair vents.
•Do not use on a ladder or un_d_ablesupport. Stable
footing on a solid surface enab)esbetter con_ol ofthe
tool in unexpectedsituations.
TOOL USE AND CARE
•Use clamps or other practical way to secure and
support the workplece to a stable platform. Holding
the work by hand oragainst your body is unstableand
may lead to lossof centroL
•Do not force too/. Use the correct tool for your ap-
plication. The correct too(will do the job better and
setar at the rate tor which it is designed.
•Do not cee tool if =witch does not turn it on or off.
Anytool that cannot be controlledwith the switchis
dangerousand must be repaired.
•Disconnect the plug from power source before
making any adjustments, changing accessories,
or storing the tool. Such preventivesafety measures
reduce the riskof startingthe tool accidentally.
•Store idle tools out of the reach of children and
other untrained persona. Tootsare dangerousinthe
hands of untrainedusers.
•Mdntsln tools wtth cars. Keep cuffing tools sharp
and clean. Properlymaintainedtoolswith sharp cut-
ting edges are less likelyto bind and are easierto
control
•Check for misaitgnment or binding of moving parts,
brsekags of parts, and any othe_ condition that
may effect the tool's operation. If damaged, have
the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are
caused by poorly maintained tools.
•Use only accessories that are recommended by the
manufacturer for your model. Accessoriesthat may

•Keep the tool end its handle dry, clean end free
from oil end grease. ANvsys use a cleancloth when
cleaning. Never use brake fluids, gasoline,petToioum-

SERVICE
•Tool service must be performed only by qualified
repair personnel. Serviceor maintenanceperformed

section of thLsmanual. Use of unauthorizedparts or
failure to follow Maintenance Instructionsmay create a

•Hold tool by Insulated gripping surhlcse when
performing an operation where the cutting tool may
contact hidden wiring or Its own cord. Contact with
e "live"wire will make exposedmetal parts of the cut-
ting tool "live"and shockthe operator.
INever use this or any power sander for wet sanding
or (io,uid polishing. Failureto comptywill increasethe

•Know your power tool. Read operator's manual
carefully. Learn Its applications end limitations, as
well as the specific potential hazards related to this

DOUBLE INSULATION
Double insulationis a concept insafety in electricpower
tools, which eliminates the need for the usualthres-wlre
grounded power cord. AJiexposed metal partsare
isolatedfrom the internalmetal motor componentswith
protectinginsulation.Double insulatedtools do not need
to be grounded.

Before attempting to use this product,familiarizeyourself
with aftoperatingfeatures and safety rules.
The sander has acomfortablepalm grip handlethat
provides maximum one-hand control and comfortand re-
duces operator fetfgue duringuontinuouasandingopera-
tions.The sander also has quickaction paper clamps and
is suitablefor sanding with coame, medium,and fine grit
sandpaper.

The conveniently located sealed slideswitch helpskeep
out dustfor a longerlife.
PAPER PUNCH
Dustlesssanding occurswhen you use the paper punch
to punch holesin the sandpaper priorto sanding.
DUST COLLECTION
Use either the dust bag includedor attach a 1-1/4 or
2-1/2 fn. vacuum hose for dustcol/ection.

INSTALLING SANDPAPER
The cushionon the sander givesyou the option of using
either non-adhesivesandpaperthat clamps to the platen
or adhesive backed sandpaper with pressuresensitive
adhesive backingthat sticks to the cushion.
INSTALLING NON-ADHESIVE SANDPAPER
See Figure2.
•Unplug the sander.
•inspect sandpaper before installing.Do not use if bro-
ken or defsc_ve.
•If rap{acingsandpaper, removeold sandpaper. To
removepaper, release paper clamp by lifting up on
leverand disengagingit fromthe tab onthe platen.
•Insertend ofnew 1/4sheet sandpaper approximately
(1/2 inch) underthe paper clamp.
•Lift up on paper clamp (everand lock into p(ace.Apply
downward pressureto conformsandpaper to p(atan.
•Wrap sandpaper around cushion.Lift lever on opposite
end of sander and insertloose end of sandpaper under
the paper clamp. Fit sandpaper againstcushionas
fight as possible.
• Liftup on paperclampleverand lock _ntoplace.

•Unp]ug thesander.
• Ifreplacingadhesivesandpaper,remove oldsand-
paperby peelingitoffcushion.Ifreplacingregular
sandpaper,relsase paper C_T_pby liftingup onpaper
cramp lever and disengagingit from the tab on the
platen.
•Remove non-adhesivesandpaper, then liftup on paper
damp lever end lock it into place.
•Carefully peel adhesivebacking from new 114sheet
sandpaper.
•Positionsandpaper, makingsure front edge of sand-
paper is alignedwith front edge of the cushion,then
carefullypress_cky side of sandpaper on cushion.
NOTE: Sandpaper must be a[igned with the front edge
of the cushionfor proper functioningof the flush sand-
ing feature.
The cushion onthe sander ksapprox_nnately
1/4 in. smaller than precut adhesive-backed sanding
sheets. If desiredyou may want to vim off the over-
hang of sandpaper on the back side of cushion.The
cushion has been made smallerso that multiple sheets
of nonadhesivesandpapercan be installed.
PAPER PUNCH
See Figure4.
A paper punch template has been suppliedwith the sand-
er. It should be used for sflgning and punchingholesin the
sandpaper for alignmentwith the holes in the cushion.
Punchingthe holes propertyis a necessarystep )n order
tor the dustlessfeature of the sender to function property.
•Instattsandpaperon the sander.
• Align sander cushionto paper punchas shown by the
iconon the paper punchtemplate.
•Pushdown on sander.

DUSTLESS SANDING

The dustbag providesa dust collectionsystemfor the
sander.Sanding dust is drawn up throughthe holes inthe
sandpaper end cushion and collects in the dust bag dur-
ing sanding operation.For more effLcientoperation, empty
dust bag when halffull.
TO INSTALL DUST BAG:
•Unplugthe sander.
•Aligngrooves on dust bag with notches onsander dust
exhaust.
•Slide dust bag onto dust exhaust.
• Turn clockwiseuntilbag looksinto place.
TO REMOVE DUST BAG FOR EMPTYING:
•Unplugthe sander.
•Turn dust bag counterclockwiseuntilit stops turning.
•Slide dust bag off sander dustexhaust.
•Shake to empty.

When sanding for an extended period of time, you can
easilyattach the dust collectionsystemof the sander to s
vaouum.
To Attach:
• Unplugthe sander.
•Remove dustbag from sander.
•Attach vacuum hoseto dust exhaust.
NOTE: Vacuum hosefits insidedustexhaust.
• Connect sander and vacuum to power supply.
_kWARNIING: When sander is not connected to
vacuum, always installdust bag back onsander.

obiects to be thrown into the face or eyeswhich

SANDPAPER SELECTION
Selectingthe correct size gritand type sandpaper is
an extremelyimportantstep inachievinga highquality
sanded finish.Aluminumoxide,siliconcarbide, and other
syntheticabrsaivea are bestfor power sanding. Natural
abrasivessuchas flint and gernetare too solt for eco-
nomicaluse in power sanding.In genera[,coarse grit will
remove the most material and finer grit will produce the
best _nish in allsanding operations.The conditionof the
surfaceto be sanded will determinewhich gritwill do the
job. If the surfaceis rough,start with a coarsegrit and
sand untilthe surface Is uniform.Medium grit may then
be usedto removescratchesleft by the coarser grit a,'_d
finer grit usedfor finishingof the surface.Alwayscontinue
sanding with each grit untilsurfaceis uniform.
NOTE: Do not use sanderwithout sandpaper. Doing so
will damage the cushion.
CAUTION: Be carafutnotto let your hand com-
pletelycoverthe air vents.

Clamp orotherwisesecure the work to prevent it from
moving underthe sander.

Hold the sander in front and away fromyou, keepingit
clear of the workpiece. Start the sander by slidingthe

fiberglass chipsand grindingsare highlyabrasiveto bear-
ings,brushes,commutators,etc. Consequently,we do not
recommended usingthistool for extended work on these
types of materials. However,it youdo work with any of
these materials,it is extremelyimportantto clean the tool
usingcompressedair.
LUBRICATION
All of the bearings in this toolam lubricatedwith asuffi-
cientamount of highgrade lubricantfor the lifeof the unit
undernormaloperatingconditions.Therefore,nofurther
lubricationis required.
Onlythe partsshown on the parts listare intended to be
repairedor replaced by the customer.All other parts
should be replacedat a Sears ServiceCenter.

•Remove clamp screws (2.).
•Removebrushtube clamps(2).
•Disconnectred and blacklead terminalsfl'om brush
tubes.
•Remove brushassemblies (2).
•Check for wear. Replace both brushassemblieswhen
e(therhas tess than 1/4 in. length of carbon remaining.
Do not replace one side withoutreplacingthe other.
•Installnew brushassemblies.Make sure curvature
of brushm_ches curvatureof motor and that brush
moves freely in brushtube.
•Reassembleby reversingthe steps listedabove.
•Tighten allscrews securely.Do not overtighten.
