Windows Media Center connects your home or office PC with your entertainment center. The Windows Media Center
Menu will only be available to you if you have Windows Vista® Home Premium or Ultimate, and if you have installed the
Media Center Extender. With Windows Media Center, you can:

TV + Movies
Media Center can stream live and pre-recorded television to Windows
Media Center Extenders. Once you have a PC with a TV tuner card
installed, you can simply plug the cable, satellite, or antenna signal
into the PC’s tuner card. To watch live TV, click the TV section of the
Windows Media Center interface or click the Live TV button on your
DSM-750 remote control. With your DSM-750 remote control, you can
pause, rewind, and record live TV. The DSM-750 has a Record button
located on the top-left part of the remote control (see image below).
Record - Starts recording live TV in Extender mode.
Live TV - Watch live TV in Extender mode.
Recorded TV - Watch recorded TV in Extender mode.
Guide - View the TV listings that are available to you.
If you have already recorded a TV program and you want to watch it,
simply click the Recorded TV button on your DSM-750 remote control
to view your recorded TV programs.
Clicking the Guide button will provide you with TV listings that are
available to you. When the Guide menu appears (following image),
select your TV program and enjoy.

Music
Windows Media Center will organize and list your music files that
are found on your media server. By default, albums are arranged in
alphabetical order and contain album art.
You may use Windows Media Center to create playlists and to select
your favorite songs to listen while wnjoying the comforts of your living
room. Windows Media Center also allows you to watch a slideshow
while listening to music.
Note: Album art can be downloaded from the Internet automatically,
or it can be added manually into Media Center.

Pictures + Videos
Windows Media Center allows you to organize your pictures and
videos.
AOL Pictures - Access pictures others have stored online and upload
your own photos for others to enjoy.
Picture Library - All your pictures stored on your PC in an easy to
use interface and viewed as thumbnails.
Video Library - All your downloaded and personal videos can be
accessed.
Online Media
Access numerous online providers for Internet videos, Internet radio,
music downloads, movie and TV show downloads along with news and
sports. Here you can find Vongo, Live365, MTV, Discovery Channel,
XM, Napster, Yahoo Sports, Reuters and much more.

Tasks > Settings
The Tasks > Settings menu allows you to set up, review and edit your
Media Center settings. These are the following options:

an Extender, and control key settings to control your Windows Media
Center experience

Settings Menu
The following options are available under the Settings menu:

Aspect Ratio
Under the A/V Output menu, you may change the Aspect Ratio to
either 4:3 (Standard Televisions) or 16:9 (Widescreen Televisions).
Please make sure you understand the ratio of your television screen
before changing the aspect ratio, or you may get a distorted picture.

Video Output
Under the A/V Output menu, you may change the Video Output to Composite, S-Video, Component, or HDMI. By
default, the DSM-750 automatically detects your video connection.
Display Resolution
Depending on your video output connections (HDMI, Component, or
Composite), you may manually change the resolution for your particular
television.
Component display resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, or
1080i.
HDMI display resolution can be set to AUTO, 480p, 720p, or 1080i.
After you’ve made your changes, you will be asked to verify your
changes. Click OK to proceed with your changes, or click Cancel to
return to the menu.

S/PDIF Audio Output
At the S/PDIF Audio Output menu, you may select between Stereo
or 5.1 Channel Surround. Selecting Stereo is recommended for
standard two to four speaker systems. Selecting 5.1 Channel Surround
is recommended if you have a five speaker surround sound system
with subwoofer.
S/PDIF = Sony/Philips Digital Interface.
This format is only supported when either the Coaxial Digital or Optical
Digital audio connectors are connected to the DSM-750, or when an
HDMI connector is connected to a compatible 5.1 audio receiver.

Network
The Network menu will provide you with an overview of your current
network configuration. If you choose to reconfigure your network, then
use your DSM-750 remote control to select Configure Network.
If you are connected to your network with an Ethernet cable, continue
to the “Wired Connection” section on page 72 of this manual. If you
are connecting wirelessly, continue to the “Wireless Connection”
section on page 76 of this manual.

Wired Connection
If DHCP is enabled on your network, select Auto (Recommended).
If DHCP is not enabled on your network, select Advanced Setup to
enter the wireless network settings manually.
If you selected Auto (Recommended), your DSM-750 will automatically
setup the required network settings and display a “successfully
connected” message (please skip to the “Wired Connection
Complete” section on page 75).
If you selected Advanced Setup, you will need to setup your DSM-750
with the required wireless network settings (please continue to the following
page).

By using the remote control’s alphanumeric keypad, or the On Screen
Keyboard, you may enter your wireless network’s name. When you have
completed entering the network name, use the down arrow to select Next.
Note: If you your wireless network is not found, refer to the “Wireless
Installation Considerations and Troubleshooting” section starting on page
95 for information as to why this may have happened.

By using your remote control, navigate through the encryption type list by
either pressing the up or down arrow. Once you find your network’s encryption

If your wireless home network is using wireless encryption, you will need to
provide the DSM-750 with the network security passphrase. By using the On
Screen Keyboard, you may enter the network security passphrase.

Slideshow
Under the Slideshow menu, the following options will be made
available to you:
• Slideshow Delay
• Photo Scaling
• Fade In/Fade Out
• Slideshow Sequence
Slideshow Delay
To set the delay time between photos in a slideshow presentation,
make your selection from the following menu. You may choose between
3 seconds, 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds, or
1 minute.

Photo Scaling
To allow your photos to be represented on your TV screen in the format
you desire, choose between Keep as original, Fit to screen, or Scale
with distortion.
Keep as original
Maintains the original resolution of the
image.
Fit to screen
Fills as much of the screen as possible
while maintaining correct proportions of
the image.
Scale with distortion
Fills the entire screen with the image,
which possibly can distort the image.
Fade In/Fade Out
If you want to have the photos fade in and fade out during slideshow transitions, select ON. If you want the photos to
appear without the fade effect, select OFF.
Slideshow Sequence
If you want the photos to appear in their normal order as presented on the server, select Normal. If you want the photos
to shuffle during a slideshow presentation, select Random.

System
Device Name
Select Device Name from the System menu, if you want to change
the device name of the DSM-750. After selecting Device Name, enter
your new device name on the following screen. Using your DSM-750
remote control’s alphanumeric keypad, or the On Screen Keyboard,
enter your new device name.

Set your screen saver time limit, by selecting from the options presented
here.

Browse Display
By default, the DSM-750 displays its folders and files in a thumbnail
format. If you want to change this display of folders and files to a list
format, select List. You may find it easier to navigate in List mode.
Select Thumbnail if you want to preview your photos before opening
them. Under the Thumbnail display, videos and music files, along with
folders, will be represented by the DSM-750’s general graphic image
library.

System Reset
A System Reset will set your DSM-750 to its factory default settings
and clear out any changes and settings you have previously configured
for your DSM-750.
Update Device
We recommend leaving this setting ON to be able to receive updates
that can improve support for media files, fix bugs, and install new
features.
Selecting New version check will immediately check for new
versions.

Extender
The Extender menu allows you to set up, review and edit your Extender
settings. These are the following options:

Set up Extender
The Extender menu provides you with the option to set up your
DSM-750 as a Media Center Extender.
If you have additional Windows Vista Ultimate or Home Premium PCs,
you can also change which PC the Media Center Extender is connected
to. After selecting Setup Extender, press Next at the welcome screen.
Write down the 8 digit setup key that appears and then complete the
Extender setup at the Windows Vista PC. Refer to page 37 for more
information.
If the DSM-750 is not setup on a wired or wireless network, you may
need to complete the network setup along with the Extender Setup.

If you choose to remove Extender functionality from your DSM-750,
select the Remove Setup Information option. On the following screen,
confirm your choice and click Next.

Automatic Start
If you are interested in only using your DSM-750 as an Extender, and
want to have Extender startup instead of the MediaLounge™ mode,
then select Automatic Start. This will start Extender mode whenever
you power on your DSM-750. By pressing the MediaLounge button
on your DSM-750 remote control, you can still have access to USB
Direct, My Media from MediaLounge mode, and Settings.
Remote Control
Your remote control has a Windows Media Center button. You can
disable this button from powering on Extender mode by selecting the
Remote Control option from the menu. Follow the instructions to
disable or enable this feature.

If you want to launch the Extender, you may do so by selecting the
Launch Extender option on the Extender menu. You may also
press the green Windows Media Center button on the DSM-750

Wireless Security
This section will show you the different levels of security you can use to protect your data from intruders. The DSM-750
offers the following types of security:
• WPA2™ (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2)
• WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
• WPA™ (Wi-Fi Protected Access)
What is WEP?
WEP stands for Wired Equivalent Privacy. It is based on the IEEE 802.11 standard and uses the RC4 encryption
algorithm. WEP provides security by encrypting data over your wireless network so that it is protected as it is transmitted
from one wireless device to another.
To gain access to a WEP network, you must know the key. The key is a string of characters that you create. When using
WEP, you must determine the level of encryption. The type of encryption determines the key length. 128-bit encryption
requires a longer key than 64-bit encryption. Keys are defined by entering in a string in HEX (hexadecimal - using
characters 0-9, A-F) or ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange – alphanumeric characters) format.
ASCII format is provided so you can enter a string that is easier to remember. The ASCII string is converted to HEX
for use over the network. Four keys can be defined so that you can change keys easily.

What is WPA?
WPA™, or Wi-Fi Protected Access, is a Wi-Fi standard that was designed to improve the security features of WEP
(Wired Equivalent Privacy).
The 2 major improvements over WEP:
• Improved data encryption through the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP). TKIP scrambles the keys
using a hashing algorithm and, by adding an integrity-checking feature, ensures that the keys haven’t been
tampered with. WPA2 is based on 802.11i and uses Advanced Encryption Standard instead of TKIP.
• User authentication, which is generally missing in WEP, through the extensible authentication protocol
(EAP). WEP regulates access to a wireless network based on a computer’s hardware-specific MAC
address, which is relatively simple to be sniffed out and stolen. EAP is built on a more secure public-key
encryption system to ensure that only authorized network users can access the network.
WPA/WPA2 incorporates user authentication through the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP). EAP is built on a
more secure public key encryption system to ensure that only authorized network users can access the network.

Wireless Installation Considerations
The D-Link lets you access your network using a wireless connection from virtually anywhere within the operating
range of your wireless network. Keep in mind, however, that the number, thickness and location of walls, ceilings, or
other objects that the wireless signals must pass through, may limit the range. Typical ranges vary depending on the
types of materials and background RF (radio frequency) noise in your home. The key to maximizing wireless range is
to follow these basic guidelines:
1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the D-Link and router to a minimum - each wall or ceiling
can reduce your range from 3-90 feet (1-30 meters.) Position your devices so that the number of walls
or ceilings is minimized between the device and your router.
2. Be aware of the direct line between network devices. A wall that is 1.5 feet thick (.5 meters), at a
45-degree angle appears to be almost 3 feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2-degree angle it looks over 42 feet
(14 meters) thick! Position devices so that the signal will travel straight through a wall or ceiling (instead
of at an angle) for better reception.
3. Building Materials make a difference. A solid metal door or aluminum studs may have a negative effect on
range. Try to position access points, wireless routers, and computers so that the signal passes through
drywall or open doorways. Materials and objects such as glass, steel, metal, walls with insulation, water
(fish tanks), mirrors, file cabinets, brick, and concrete will degrade your wireless signal.
4. Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from electrical devices or appliances that
generate RF noise.
5. Dualband wireless allows you to check E-mail and surf the web on the 2.4GHz band or stream
High-Definition movies and other media on the clearer 5GHz band. If you are using 2.4GHz cordless
phones or X-10 (wireless products such as ceiling fans, lights, and home security systems), your wireless
connection may degrade dramatically or drop completely. Make sure your 2.4GHz phone base is as far
away from your wireless devices as possible. The base transmits a signal even if the phone is not in
use.

Troubleshooting
I cannot see the Setup Wizard when I turn on my DSM-750 player for the first time.
„ Make sure your TV is displaying the appropriate video source. You may need to use the AV Input, Source, Select,
or TV/Video button on your TV or TV remote to change video sources. If you are having trouble changing the video
source, refer to the instructions that came with your TV.
„ If you did not connect the player directly to your TV, but are instead passing the signal through your VCR, make
sure your VCR is displaying the appropriate video source. You may need to use the Input or Source button on
your VCR or VCR’s remote control. Some VCRs only pass the signal through when they are turned off. If you are
having trouble displaying the correct video source, refer to the instructions that came with your VCR.
„ Make sure cables are connected to the IN jacks on your TV or VCR, not the OUT jacks.
„ The cables you are using to connect your receiver to your TV or other equipment may be damaged or defective.
Try exchanging the cables connected to the receiver with other cables that you know are working properly.
„ Verify the power cord is plugged into a working power outlet and that the outlet is not controlled by a light
switch.
My remote control isn’t working.
„ Make sure the batteries are inserted correctly.
„ Try removing the batteries and reinserting them without touching any buttons on the remote control.
„ Replace the batteries with new ones.

I can’t find any of my music, photos, or video.
„ Make sure your computer is powered on and that it has not entered standby or sleep mode. You may need to
change your computer’s power settings if you want your content to be available all the time.
„ Make sure a Media Server software (such as Windows® Media Player 11) is running on your computer. If necessary,
start your Media Server software again.
„ If using a wired network, verify the Ethernet cable is properly attached to your DSM-750 and to a network switch,
hub or router. Verify that the switch, hub or router is powered on.
„ If you are using static IP addresses, verify the IP address and netmask are in the same range as other addresses
on your network. Verify that the address is not already in use by another PC or device.
„ Make sure the files you are sharing use a supported file format and encoding scheme.
I can’t hear any sound when I’m playing music.
„ Make sure the audio cables are properly connected.
„ If the audio cables are connected to your TV, the TV must be on to hear any music.
„ If the audio cables are connected to your stereo, make sure the stereo is on and you have the correct stereo
input source selected. If you are having trouble selecting the correct audio source, refer to the instructions that
came with your stereo.
Some of my MP3 and WMA files don’t appear.
„ The DSM-750 supports the most common music file formats. However, there are almost an infinite variety of bit
rates and sample rates. If a file does not appear on the receiver, it most likely uses an unsupported rate.
„
The files may be copy protected. To share your files, turn copy protection off when you rip them.
Note: Downloaded WMA files using Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection can be played by using the
Windows Media Player 11 software.

The following MP3 sample rates are supported:
4, 8, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz.
„
For best results, rip your MP3 files at 128 kbps or higher, with a sample rate of 44.1 kHz.
I am not able to play certain media files.
„ The DSM-750 supports most industry standard file formats but even supported file formats can be encoded
in ways that are not supported. Try exporting media with different encoding settings or using different software
applications to encode your files.
Checking the bit and sample rates of a music file.
„ To check the bit and sample rates of a music file:
1.
Right-click on the file and select Properties.
2.
Select the Summary tab and click the Advanced button. Scroll to the bottom of the
list.
The file to the right has a bit rate of 128 kbps and a sample rate of 44 kHz.
In most cases, the sample rate does not matter unless you come across a file
that will not play or appear on your player. Use the above procedure to check
the file settings for supported rates.

I created a music playlist on my computer, but it doesn’t appear on my media player.
„ Make sure the playlist file is located in a folder shared by your media player. Copy the playlist to your shared
music folder or click on the Media Server icon to add or change your folder options.
How do I reset my DSM-750?
„ Under normal circumstances, you should not need to reset your media player. However, to fully reset the media
player, lightly insert a paper clip into the reset opening on the unit’s rear panel for ten seconds. You may also
reset the device by accessing the Settings menu, and selecting System Reset.
What version of firmware do I have?
„ From the main home screen, access Settings, click on System and select Update.
I am unable to access Rhapsody™ content.
„ Make sure Rhapsody ™ is running on a computer connected to the network and check your network
connections.
„
Verify that the UPnP Server has been started in Rhapsody™. Within the Rhapsody™ application on your computer,

How does wireless work?
Wireless works similar to how cordless phones work, through radio signals that transmit data from point A to point B.

Network (WLAN), and Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN).
Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Tips
Here are a few things to keep in mind, when you install a wireless network.
Centralize your router or Access Point
Make sure you place the router/access point in a centralized location within your network for the best performance. Try
to place the router/access point as high as possible in the room, so the signal gets dispersed throughout your home.
If you have a two-story home, you may need a repeater to boost the signal to extend the range.
Eliminate Interference
Place home appliances such as cordless telephones, microwaves, and televisions as far away as possible from the
router/access point. This would significantly reduce any interference that the appliances might cause since they operate
on the same frequency. Streaming HD Video and Multimedia over 5GHz, will play better wirelessly.
Security
Don’t let you next-door neighbors or intruders connect to your wireless network. Secure your wireless network by turning

Converting an Earlier WMV File
There are many variations of video files (including WMV files) which may
affect playback on the DSM-750. To alleviate this issue, there are software
tools available on the web to check the properties of a video file and to
convert an earlier WMV file into WMV9. If you have Windows® XP, your
Windows comes with a tool from Microsoft called “Movie Maker.” With
this tool, you can create and edit video files into Windows Media Video
9 (WMV9) format. Here is an example of converting a WMV8 file into
WMV9.
Step 1: Verify your WMV file codec using a validation tool. In the “Video”
field, it tells you the selected video file is a WMV8 instead of a supported
WMV9 by your HD media player. Therefore, we need to convert this
file into a WMV9 format in order for you to play it.
This is AVIcodec, which is used to convert an earlier WMV file
into WMV9.
Step 2: Open “Windows Movie Maker”. Import the video you wish to
convert.

Networking Basics
Check your IP Address
After you install your new D-Link DSM-750, by default, the network settings should be set to obtain an IP address from
a DHCP server (i.e. wireless router) automatically. To verify DHCP is working, you can verify the IP address of a PC
on the same network as your DSM-750, by following the steps below.
Click on Start > Run. In the run box type cmd and click
OK.
At the prompt, type ipconfig and press Enter.
This will display the IP address, subnet mask, and the
default gateway of your adapter.
If the address is 0.0.0.0, check your adapter installation,
security settings, and the settings on your router. Some
firewall software programs may block a DHCP request
on newly installed adapters.
If you are connecting to a wireless network at a
hotspot (e.g. hotel, coffee shop, airport), please contact an employee or administrator to verify their wireless network
settings.

Subject to the terms and conditions set forth herein, D-Link Systems, Inc. (“D-Link”) provides this Limited Warranty:

Limited Software Warranty:
D-Link warrants that the software portion of the product (“Software”) will substantially conform to D-Link’s then current functional specifications
for the Software, as set forth in the applicable documentation, from the date of original retail purchase of the Software for a period of ninety
(90) days (“Software Warranty Period”), provided that the Software is properly installed on approved hardware and operated as contemplated
in its documentation. D-Link further warrants that, during the Software Warranty Period, the magnetic media on which D-Link delivers the
Software will be free of physical defects. The customer’s sole and exclusive remedy and the entire liability of D-Link and its suppliers under
this Limited Warranty will be, at D-Link’s option, to replace the non-conforming Software (or defective media) with software that substantially
conforms to D-Link’s functional specifications for the Software or to refund the portion of the actual purchase price paid that is attributable
to the Software. Except as otherwise agreed by D-Link in writing, the replacement Software is provided only to the original licensee, and
is subject to the terms and conditions of the license granted by D-Link for the Software. Replacement Software will be warranted for the
remainder of the original Warranty Period and is subject to the same limitations and exclusions. If a material non-conformance is incapable
of correction, or if D-Link determines in its sole discretion that it is not practical to replace the non-conforming Software, the price paid by

Submitting A Claim:
The customer shall return the product to the original purchase point based on its return policy. In case the return policy period has expired
and the product is within warranty, the customer shall submit a claim to D-Link as outlined below:
• The customer must submit with the product as part of the claim a written description of the Hardware defect or Software
nonconformance in sufficient detail to allow D-Link to confirm the same, along with proof of purchase of the product (such
as a copy of the dated purchase invoice for the product) if the product is not registered.
• The customer must obtain a Case ID Number from D-Link Technical Support at 1-877-453-5465, who will attempt to assist
the customer in resolving any suspected defects with the product. If the product is considered defective, the customer must
obtain a Return Material Authorization (“RMA”) number by completing the RMA form and entering the assigned Case ID
Number at https://rma.dlink.com/.

• After an RMA number is issued, the defective product must be packaged securely in the original or other suitable shipping
package to ensure that it will not be damaged in transit, and the RMA number must be prominently marked on the outside

portion of the product and will not ship back any accessories.
• The customer is responsible for all in-bound shipping charges to D-Link. No Cash on Delivery (“COD”) is allowed. Products
sent COD will either be rejected by D-Link or become the property of D-Link. Products shall be fully insured by the customer
and shipped to D-Link Systems, Inc., 17595 Mt. Herrmann, Fountain Valley, CA 92708. D-Link will not be held responsible
for any packages that are lost in transit to D-Link. The repaired or replaced packages will be shipped to the customer via
UPS Ground or any common carrier selected by D-Link. Return shipping charges shall be prepaid by D-Link if you use an
address in the United States, otherwise we will ship the product to you freight collect. Expedited shipping is available upon
request and provided shipping charges are prepaid by the customer. D-Link may reject or return any product that is not
packaged and shipped in strict compliance with the foregoing requirements, or for which an RMA number is not visible from
