Now you can stay connectedwherever you are and wherever you go.The DWL-AG132 is Wi-Fi compliant, meaning that it can connect and interoperate withother 802.11b , 802.11g and 802.11a Wi-Fi-compliant wireless routers, access pointsand adapters. The DWL-AG132 connects to any available USB port on a laptop ordesktop Windows -based computer, and also includes a USB cradle. With the optionalUSB cradle, the DWL-AG132 can be positioned virtually anywhere at a workstation toachieve the best available wireless signal reception - whether that workstation is inyour office, on your deck or patio, by the pool, at the local coffee shop, or in an airportterminal while waiting to board your next flight.The adapter works with Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 2000 operating systemsto ensure that you’ll be up and running on a wireless network in just a matter of seconds.Using its default settings, the DWL-AG132 automatically connects to otherD-Link AirPremier AG wireless products as soon as it’s active.*Maximum wireless signal rate derived from IEEE Standard 802.11a/g specifications. WPA uses TKIP (Temporal KeyIntegrity Protocol) to change the temporal key every 10,000 packets (a packet is akind of message transmitted over a network.) This ensures much greater security thanthe standard WEP security. (By contrast, the previous WEP encryption implementationsrequired the keys to be changed manually.)®

Utilizing the Pre-Shared Key mode ofWPA, the DWL-AG132 will obtain a new security key every time it connects to the 802.11network. You only need to input your encryption information once in the configurationmenu. No longer will you have to manually input a new WEP key frequently to ensuresecurity. With the DWL-AG132, you will automatically receive a new key every time youconnect, vastly increasing the safety of your communication.802.1x: Authentication which is a first line of defense against intrusion. In theauthentication process, the Authentication Server verifies the identity of the clientattempting to connect to the network. Unfamiliar clients would be denied access.

8DWL-AG132 User’s ManualD-Link Systems, Inc.Installation ConsiderationsThe DWL-AG132 lets you access your network using a wireless connection from virtuallyanywhere within its operating range. Keep in mind, however, that the number, thicknessand location of walls, ceilings, or other objects that the wireless signals must passthrough, may limit the range. Typical ranges vary depending on the types of materialsand background RF (radio frequency) noise in your home or business. The key tomaximizing wireless range is to follow these basic guidelines:Installation ConsiderationsKeep the number of walls and ceilings between the DWL-AG132 and other networkdevices to a minimum - each wall or ceiling can reduce your DWL-AG132’s rangefrom 3-90 feet (1-30 meters.) Position your devices so that the number of walls orceilings is minimized.Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from electrical devices orappliances that generate RF noise.Be aware of the direct line between network devices. A wall that is 1.5 feet thick (.5meters), at a 45-degree angle appears to be almost 3 feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2-degree angle it looks over 42 feet (14 meters) thick! Position devices so that thesignal will travel straight through a wall or ceiling (instead of at an angle) for betterreception.Building materials can impede the wireless signal - a solid metal door or aluminumstuds may have a negative effect on range. Try to position wireless devices andcomputers with wireless adapters so that the signal passes through drywall oropen doorways and not other materials.
9DWL-AG132 User’s ManualD-Link Systems, Inc.Getting StartedHardware Installation With its default settings, the DWL-AG132 will connect with otherD-Link AirPlus Xtreme GTM products, right out of the box.A wireless router - D-Link AirPlus Xtreme GTM DI-624A laptop computer with a D-Link AirPlus Xtreme GTM DWL-AG132A desktop computer with a D-Link AirPlus Xtreme GTM DWL-AG132A cable modem - D-Link DCM-201There are basically two modes of networking:Infrastructure – using an access point or router, such as the DI-624.Ad-Hoc – directly connecting to another computer, for Peer-to-Peer communication,using wireless network adapters on each computer, such as two or more DWL-AG132Wireless Network USB adapters.On the following pages we will show you an example of an Infrastructure Networkand an Ad-Hoc Network.An Infrastructure network contains an access point or router. The Infrastructurenetwork example shown on the following page contains the following D-Link networkdevices (your existing network may be comprised of other devices):

(See the Quick Installation Guide included withthe product.) ®Install the D-Link AirPremier AG DWL-AG132 Wireless USB 2.0 adapterinto the laptop computer. (See the Quick Installation Guide included with theproduct.) ®When assigning IP addresses to the computers on the network, please remember thatthe IP address for each computer must be in the same IP address range as all thecomputers in the network, and the subnet mask must be exactly the same for all thecomputers in the network.For example: If the first computer is assigned an IP address of 192.168.0.2 with a subnetmask of 255.255.255.0, then the second computer can be assigned an IP address of192.168.0.3 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, etc.IMPORTANT: If computers or other devices are assigned the same IP address, oneor more of the devices may not be visible on the network.IP Address
12DWL-AG132 User’s ManualD-Link Systems, Inc.Using the Configuration UtilityUsing the Configuration UtilityD-Link AirPremier AG DWL-AG132 uses the Configuration Utility as themanagement software. The utility provides the user an easy interface to change anysettings related to the wireless adapter. After you have completed the installation of theDWL-AG132 (refer to the Quick Installation Guide that came with your purchase) wheneveryou start the computer, the Configuration Utility starts automatically and the systemtray icon is loaded in the toolbar (see illustration below.*) Clicking on the utility icon willstart the Configuration Utility. Another way to start the Configuration Utility is to clickon Start>Programs>D-Link AirPremier AG >D-Link AirPremier AG Utility.If you are using Windows XP, you can use either the Zero Configuration Utility or theD-Link Configuration Utility.To use the D-Link Configuration Utility with XP,right-click on the wireless network icon in thetaskbar in the lower right-hand corner of yourcomputer screen.In the window that appears, select ViewAvailable Wireless Networks and click theAdvanced button. The screen at right willappear.Select the Wireless Networks tab.Uncheck the box in the properties windowthat enables windows configuration.After you have done this, you can then use the D-LinkConfiguration Utility with XP by clicking on the D-LinkConfiguration Utility icon.If the icon does not display in the taskbar, then click onthis icon on your desktop to open.*Configuration Utilityicon in the system tray®

The preamble defines the length of the CRC block(Cyclic Redundancy Check) used in communication between theaccess point and the wireless network adapters. CRC is a commontechnique for detecting data transmission errors. High trafficnetworks should use the shorter preamble type. TheDWL-AG132 will automatically determine the best Preamble length.Using the Configuration UtilityPower Mode:Preamble:Support Band:Apply:Continuous Access Mode is the default setting. For best results leavethis setting at the default.Select 11B, 11G, 11A, and/or Super A/G. You may select any or allof the bands to reflect the IEEE802.11 band of each of the deviceson your network.Click Apply to save the changes.

20DWL-AG132 User’s ManualD-Link Systems, Inc.Using the Configuration UtilityEncryption-WPA-PSKWhen you select WPA-PSK in the Encryption window, the screen below will appear.Suitable for the home user, WPA-PSK (WPA Pre-Shared Key) is a superior form ofsecurity that does not require a RADIUS server in the network.By using TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol), the security keys change at set intervals,creating a network that is more secure than one that utilizes WEP encryption alone.Define WPA PSK:OK:Enter the WPA Passphrase. All the devices on the network must sharethis same passphrase in order to communicate on the network.Click OK to save the passphrase.

Click on the Connect button.Site SurveyIn the lower half of the screen, you can manage the profiles that youhave created. Scroll up and down and highlight the profile that youwish to configure. You can Add or Remove a profile, or configurethe Properties of the profile in order to connect with an availablenetwork. When you click Add, Properties or Connect, the popupscreen on the next page will appear for configuration purposes.Click on Refresh to get the most updated list of available networks.Highlight a network profile; click Connect to connect to that network.Connect:Click Add and the screen on the next page will appear.Add:Highlight a network profile; click Remove to remove a network fromthe profile list.Remove:Highlight a network profile; click Connect to connect to that network.Properties:Connect:Click to configure properties on the popup screen on the next page.

What variables may cause my wireless products to lose reception?D-Link products let you access your network from virtually anywhere you want. However,the positioning of the products within your environment will affect the wireless range.Please refer to Installation Considerations in the Wireless Basics section of thismanual for further information about the most advantageous placement of your D-Linkwireless products.3. Why does my wireless connection keep dropping?4. Why can’t I get a wireless connection?If you have enabled encryption on the DWL-AG132, you must also enableencryption on all wireless devices in the network in order to establish a wirelessconnection.If you are using 2.4GHz cordless phones, X-10 equipment or other home securitysystems, ceiling fans, and lights, your wireless connection will degrade dramatically ordrop altogether. Try changing the channel on your router, access point and wirelessadapter to a different channel to avoid interference.Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet) from electrical devices that generate RFnoise, like microwaves, monitors, electric motors, etc.The encryption settings are: 64- or 128-bit. Make sure that theencryption bit level is the same on the router and the DWL-AG132.Make sure that the SSID on the wireless router (if you have one in your network)and the DWL-AG132 are exactly the same. If they are not,wireless connection will not be established. The default SSID is default.
