Introduction
TM
The D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G+ DWL-G650+ Wireles s Cardbus Adapter is a 802.11g
high-performance, wireless adapter that supports high-speed wireless networking at home,
at work or in public places.
Unlike most network cards, the DWL-G650+ provides data transfers at up to 8X (compared
to the st andard 11 Mbps) when used with other D-Link AirPlus Xt reme G products. The
802.11g standard is backwards compatible with 802.11b products. This means that you
do not need t o change your ent ire network to maintain c onnectivity. You may sacrifice
some of 802.11g’s speed when you mix 802. 11b and 802.11g devices, but you will not
los e the abilit y to c ommunicate when you inc orporate the 802.11g standard into y our
802.11b network. You may choose to slowly change your network by gradually replacing
the 802.11b devices with 802.11g devices .
In addition to offering faster data transfer speeds when used with other 802.11g products,
the DWL-G650+ has the newest, st rongest, most advanced security feat ures available
today. W hen us ed with other 802. 11g WPA (W iFi P rotect ed A ccess ) and 802. 1x
compatible products in a network with a radius server, the security features include:
WPA*:
A new s ecurity feat ure, Wi-Fi Protected Access authorizes and identifies
users based on a secret key t hat changes automat ically at a regular interval.
WPA uses TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) to change the temporal key
every 10,000 packets (a packet is a kind of message transmitted over a network.)
This insures muc h great er securit y t han the s tandard WE P sec urit y. (By
contrast, the older WEP encryption required the keys to be changed manually.)
802.1x*:
Authe nti ca ti on is a firs t line of defense agains t int rus ion. In the
Authentication proces s the server verifies the identity of the client attempting to
connect t o the network. Unfamiliar client s would be denied access.
For home users that will not incorporate a RADIUS server in their network, the security
for the DWL-G650+, used in conjunction with other 802.11g produc ts, will still be much
stronger than ever before. Utilizing the Pre Shared Key mode of WPA, the DWL-G650+
will obt ain a new security key every time it connec ts to the 802. 11g network. You only
need to input your encryption information once in the configuration menu. No longer will
you have to manually input a new WEP key frequently to ensure security, with the DWLG650+, you will automatically receive a new key every time you connect, vastly increasing
the safet y of your communications.

Wireless Basics
D-Link wireless products are based on industry standards to provide easy-touse and compatible high-speed wireless connectivity within your home, business
or public access wireless networks. D-Link wireless products will allow you
access to the data you want, when and where you want it. You will be able to
enjoy the freedom that wireless networking brings.
A WLAN is a cellular computer network that transmits and receives data with
radio signals instead of wires. WLANs are used increasingly in both home and
office environments, and public areas such as airports, coffee shops and
universities. Innovative ways to utilize WLAN technology are helping people to
work and communicate more efficiently. Increased mobility and the absence of
cabling and other fixed infrastructure have proven to be beneficial for many
users.
Wireless users can use the same applications they use on a wired network.
Wireless adapter cards used on laptop and desktop systems support the same
protocols as Ethernet adapter cards.
Wireless Basics (continued)
People use WLAN technology for many different purposes:
Mobility - Productivity increases when people have access to data in any
location within the operating range of the WLAN. Management decisions based
on real-time information can significantly improve worker efficiency.
Low Implementation Costs – WLANs are easy to set up, manage, change
and relocate. Networks that frequently change, both physically and logically,
can benefit from WLANs ease of implementation. W LANs can operate in
locations where installation of wiring may be im practical.
Installation and Network Expansion - Installing a WLAN system can be
fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings.
Wireless technology allows the network to go where wires cannot go - even
outside the home or office.
Inexpensive Solution – Wireless network devices are as competitively priced
as conventional Ethernet network devices.
Scalability – WLANs can be configured in a variety of ways to meet the needs
of specific applications and installations. Configurations are easily changed
and range from peer-to-peer networks suitable for a small number of users to
larger infrastructure networks to accommodate hundreds or thousands of users,
depending on the number of wireless devices deployed.
The DWL-G650+ is compatible with the following wireless products:
n D-Link AirPlus DWL-650+, D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G+ DWL-G650+
Wireless Cardbus Adapters used with laptop computers
n D-Link AirPlus DWL-520+, D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G+ DWL-G520+

Wireless Basics (continued)
Standards-Based Technology
The DWL-G650+ Wireless Cardbus Adapter utilizes the 802.11g standard.
The IEEE 802.11g standard is an extension of the 802.11b standard. It increases
the data rate up to 54 Mbps within the 2.4GHz band, utilizing OFDM technology.
This means that in most environments, within the specified range of this device,
you will be able to transfer large files quickly or even watch a movie in MPEG
format over your network without noticeable delays. This technology works by
transmitting high-speed digital data over a radio wave utilizing OFDM (Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology. OFDM works by splitting the radio
signal into multiple smaller sub-signals that are then transmitted simultaneously
at different frequencies to the receiver. OFDM reduces the amount of crosstalk
(interference) in signal transmissions. The D-Link DWL-G650+ will automatically
sense the best possible connection speed to ensure the greatest speed and
range possible.
802.11g offers the most advanced network security features available today,
including: WPA *, 802.1x *TKIP, AES and Pre-Shared Key mode. These security
features are explained in more detail in the Introduction and the Features section
of this manual.
The DWL-G650+ is backwards compatible with 802.11b devices. This means
that if you have an existing 802.11b network, the devices in that network will be
compatible with 802.11g devices at speeds up to 11Mbps in the 2.4GHz range.
Also based on the IEEE 802.11b standard, the DWL-G650+ is interoperable
with existing compatible 2.4GHz wireless technology with data transfer speeds
of up to 11Mbps.

Wireless Basics (continued)
Installation Considerations
The D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G+ DWL-G650+ lets you access your network, using
a wireless connection, from virtually anywhere within its operating range. Keep
in mind, however, that the num ber, thickness and location of walls, ceilings, or
other objects that the wireless signals must pass through, may limit the range.
Typical ranges vary depending on the types of materials and background RF
(radio frequency) noise in your home or business. The key to maxim izing
wireless range is to follow these basic guidelines:
1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the DW L-G650+ and
other network devices to a minimum - each wall or ceiling can reduce
your D-Link AirPlus Extreme G+ Wireless product’s range from 3-90 feet (130 meters.) Position your devices so that the number of walls or ceilings is
minimized.
2. Be aware of the direct line between network devices. A wall that is
1.5
feet thick (.5 meters), at a 45-degree angle appears to be almost 3
feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2-degree angle it looks over 42 feet (14 meters)
thick! Position devices so that the signal will travel straight through a wall or
ceiling (instead of at an angle) for better reception.
3. Building Materials can impede the wireless signal - a solid metal door or
aluminum studs may have a negative effect on range. Try to position wireless
devices and computers with wireless adapters so that the signal passes
through drywall or open doorways and not other materials.
4. Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from electrical
devices or appliances that may generate extreme RF noise.
Getting Started
There are basically two modes of networking:
nInfrastructure – using an Access Point, or Wireless Router,
such as the DI-624+.
nAd-Hoc – directly connecting to another computer, for peer-topeer communication, using wireless network adapters on
each computer, such as two or more DWL-G650+ wireless
network Cardbus adapters.
On the following pages we will show you an example of an Infrastructure
Network and an Ad-Hoc Network.
An Infrastructure network contains an Access Point or a Wireless Router.
The Infrastructure Network example shown on the following page contains
the following D-Link network devices (your existing network may be
comprised of other devices):
A wireless Router - D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G+ DI-624+
A laptop computer with a wireless adapter D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G+ DWL-G650+
A desktop computer with a wireless adapter D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-G520+,
or D-Link AirPlus DWL-520+
A Cable m odem - D-Link DCM-200

previously loaded. To remove the drivers, do the following:
35
Troubleshooting
A. Under Tools> select Folder Options… > select View >
under Hidden files and folders > select Show hidden
files and folders
B. Uncheck Hide extension for known file types > click
on Apply
C. Search for previously loaded driver files. Remove these
files from the INF and SYSTEM32 (DRIVERS) folders
in the Windows directory. Note: W indows XP and
W indows 2000 will renam e .inf files that have not
received WHQL certification into oe m.inf files (e.g.,
oem1.inf.)
6. The computer with the DWL-G650+ installed is unable to connect to
the wireless network and/or the Internet.
Check that the LED indicators for the broadband modem are
indicating normal activity. If not, there may be a problem with the
broadband connection.
Check that the LED indicators on the wireless router are functioning
properly. If not, check that the AC power and Ethernet cables are
firmly connected.
Check that the IP Address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings
are correctly entered for the network
In Infrastructure m ode, m ake sure the same Serv ice Se t
Identifier (SSID) is specified on the settings for the wireless clients
and access points. The SSID factory default setting for the D-Link
Air, AirPlus and AirPro products is default. (Double-click on the
WLAN icon in the taskbar. The Link Info screen will display the
SSID setting.)
In Ad-Hoc mode, both wireless clients will need to have the same
SSID. Please note that it might be necessary to set up one client to
establish a BSS (Basic Service Set) and wait briefly before setting
up other clients. This prevents several clients from trying to establish
a BSS at the same time, which can result in multiple singular BSSs
being established, rather than a single BSS with multiple clients
associated to it.
36
Troubleshooting
Check that the Ne twork Connection for the wireless client is
configured properly. Select AP (Infrastructure) when connecting
to an access point and select Ad-Hoc mode when connecting
without an access point. Double-click on the WLAN icon in the
taskbar > click on Configuration to change the settings for the
wireless adapter.
If Security is enabled, m ake sure that the correct encryption keys
are entered on both the DWL-G650+ and the access point. Doubleclick on the WLAN icon in the taskbar > click Encryption. Check to
see that the key selected is set to the same key as other devices on
the network.
7. How can I troubleshoot distance issues using the DWL-G650+.
Move the DWL-G650+ and Access Point or Wireless router into
the same room and then test the wireless connection.
Change the channel of the Access Point.
Move devices within the line of sight
