Introduction
ThispaperprovidesstepbystepinstructionsforusingWakeOnLAN(WOL)
withDell™Servers.
Definition
WakeOnLANallowsaservertoberemotelypoweredon.WakeOnLAN
technologyresidesinaserver’smanagednetworkinterfacecard(NIC)and/orin
aLANonmotherboard(LOM)integratednetworkconnection.
WhenaWOLenabledsystemisplacedinapowersavingmode(hibernate,
standby,poweroff,etc...),themanagedNICorLOMusestheauxiliarypower
sourcetomonitorthenetworkandreceiveawakeuppacket.Whenawakeup
packetisreceived,thesystempowersupasnormal.

with no Operating System (OS) Installed

Dell’sNICsandLOMscanaccomplishWOLafterasystemhasbeenunplugged
fromallA/Cpower,thenreturnedtoA/Cpower,butnotpoweredon.Thisstate
isknownas“OutOfBoxWOL”or“D0uninitialized.”Thiscanbeusefulif
serverstobeinstalledpassthroughacentralprocessingpointforpreparation,
andthenareinstalledataremotesite.
NICsandLOMsfromDellhaveWOLdisabledbydefault.Havingmorethan
onedeviceenabledforWOLinasystemcanoverloadthe3.3voltauxiliary
powersupplyandcauseittomalfunction.Dellstronglyrecommendsthatonly
onedevicebeenabledforWOLpersystem.ToenableOutofBoxWOL,createa
DOSbootablefloppyandcopytheutility,listedintheToolssectionabove,
specifictotheWOLdevicetoitfromtheDellOpenManagementServer
Assistantordownloaditfromhttp://support.dell.com.

2. ChoosetheNICforWOL,recorditsMACaddress,andnoteitsnumberon
thelefthandsideofthedisplay.

thenumberoftheNICinthedisplay.
b. EnableBroadcomNX1WOLbytyping‘b57udiag–w1–cX’
whereXisthenumberoftheNICinthedisplay.
c. EnableBroadcomNX2WOLbytyping‘uxdiag–cX–wol1’
whereXisthenumberoftheNICinthedisplay.

3. Unplugthesystemandsendittotheremotesitetobeinstalled.Thesystem
mustberemovedfromallA/Cinputforaperiodofatleast10secondsto
allowallcapacitancetodrainfromthesystemsoitresetstoitsdefaultstate.
Thesystemmustnotbepoweredon,justconnectedtoA/CandtheWOL
enabledNICconnectedtotheactivenetwork.Thesystemisnowreadytobe
poweredonviaWOLwhenneeded.
4. Senda‘MagicPacket’wakeupsignaltotheMACaddressoftheWOL
enabledNIC,andthesystemwillboot.OutofBoxWOLcanonlybe
accomplishedviathe‘MagicPacket’WOLsignal.

installed,installthem.Dellstronglysuggestsupdatingtothenewest
versionsofthenetworkdriversavailableontheDellsupportwebsite.
4. ForBroadcomNICsandLOMs,orIntelGigabit(1000MBps)NICsorLOMs,
skiptostep9.
5. ForIntelFastEthernet(10/100Mbps)NICsorLOMs,fromthesystemtrayor
fromthecontrolpanel,openPROSetII.ClickontheNICwithWOL

enabled.ThedisplayedEthernetAddresswillmatchtheMACaddress
obtainedwhileusingIBAUTIL.EXE.
6. ChoosetheAdvancedTab.Inthesettingsframe,chooseEnablePMEand
changethevaluetoEnabled.
7. ClickOK.WindowsNT4.0willpromptforareboot.ChooseYes.
8. Afterthesystemhasrestarted,iftheNICisnotalreadyconnectedtoaswitch
orhub,connectitandshutthesystemdown.
9. Shutthesystemoff.TheconnectionLEDontheNICandswitchorhubwill
remainonindicatingtheNICismonitoringthenetworkforwakeuppackets
directedtoitsMACaddress.
10. SendawakeupsignaltotheMACaddressoftheWOLenabledNIC,andthe
systemwillboot.
Note:IfthesystembootisinterruptedbeforetheOSandtheNICdriverareloaded,the
systemwillnotbeabletoperformWOLagainuntilthesystemisrebootedmanuallyand
theOSanddriverareallowedtoloadandresettheNIC’sWOLregisters.

onedeviceenabledforWOLinasystemcanoverloadthe3.3voltauxiliary
powersupplyandcauseittomalfunction.Dellstronglyrecommendsthatonly
onedevicebeenabledforWOLpersystem.ToenableWOLfollowthesteps
below.
ThestepstoenablingWOLunderWindows2000ServerandWindowsServer
2003operatingsystemsareasfollows:
1. Windows2000andWindows2003donotrequirethatWOLbeturnedonin
theNIC’sorLOM’sfirmware,thereforethestepsusingDOSoutlinedinthe
OutofBoxandWindowsNT4.0proceduresarenotnecessaryandshould
beskipped.EnablingWOLwithIBAUTIL.EXE,UXDIAG.EXEor
B57UDIAG.EXEmaybedetrimentaltoWOLunderWindows2000and
Windows2003.
2. LogintoWindows2000/2003withanaccountthathasadministrator
privileges.IfthemostrecentDellprovideddriversfortheNICarenot
installed,installthem.OpenthepropertiesfortheNICenabledforWOL
andthenclickthe‘Configure’button.ChoosethePowerManagementTab
andenablethecheckboxnexttotheline‘Allowthisdevicetobringthe
computeroutofstandby.’StandbyinthiscasereferstobothStandbyand
Hibernate.Ensurethatthecheckboxnexttotheline‘Allowthecomputerto
turnoffthisdevicetosavepower’isalsochecked.
3. EnsureHibernateisenabledforthesystembyopeningPowerOptionsinthe
ControlPanel,choosingtheHibernateTabandchecking‘Enablehibernate
support’.(SeeNotebelowifusingaPowerEdge350.)
4. ClickOK.
5. IftheNICisnotalreadyconnectedtoaswitchorhub,connectitandsetthe
systemtohibernatebyclickingStart/ShutdownandchoosingHibernate.

6. Thesystemwillshutoff.TheconnectionLEDontheNICandswitchorhub
willremainonindicatingtheNICismonitoringthenetworkforwakeup
packetsdirectedtoitsMACaddress.
7. SendawakeupsignaltotheMACaddressoftheWOLenabledNIC,andthe
systemwillboot.
Note:Ifthesystembootisinterruptedbeforetheoperatingsystem(OS)andtheNIC
driverareloaded,thesystemwillnotbeabletoperformWOLagainuntilthesystemis
rebootedmanuallyandtheOSanddriverareallowedtoloadandresettheNIC’sWOL
registers.
PowerEdge350Note:ThePowerEdge350istheonlyDellserverthatsupportsStandby
andnotHibernate.Thesameproceduresshouldbefollowedwiththeexceptionofthe
Hibernateenablingstepandtheshutdowntohibernate.Standbyisenabledbydefault.

theWOLdevicetoitfromtheDellOpenManagementServerAssistantor

ThestepstoEnablingWOLunderRedHatEnterpriseLinuxversions4andlater

1. LogintotheBASHshellwithrootprivileges.IfthemostrecentDell
provideddriversarenotinstalled,installthem.Run‘ethtoolethX’where
‘ethX’isthenameandinstanceofthedesiredWOLnetworkinterface.The
WOLcapabilitiesandcurrentdefaultsettingswillbedisplayedinthe
output.
a. Theethtoolmanpageshavemoreinformationonsettingsand
meaningsofthesettings.
b. IfthedefaultsettingsshowWOLdisabled(astheywillbydefaultas
shippedfromDell)thenfollowingsteps1and2intheOutofBox
WOLinstructionsectionwillchangethedefaultsetting.
c. EnablingWOLwithethtoolwhenthedefaultisdisabledwillnot
persistacrossreboots,meaningthatshuttingdownandperforming
WOLonce,thenshuttingdownagainandattemptingWOLwillnot
besuccessfulwithoutrunningethtoolagaintoenableWOL.Theuse
ofastartupscriptcanenableWOLoneachsubsequentrebootif
desired,orchangingthedefaultfromtheDOSbasedutilities.
2. Run‘ethtoolethX–swolg’toenableMagicPacketWOL,whereethXisthe
nameandinstanceofthedesiredWOLnetworkinterface.
3. HaltLinuxandshutthesystemoff.TheconnectionLEDontheNICand
switchorhubwillremainon,indicatingtheNICismonitoringthenetwork
forwakeuppacketsdirectedtoitsMACaddress.

a. ToenablewakeuptypesotherthanMagicPacket,checktheethtool
manpages.
4. SendaMagicPacketwakeupsignaltotheMACaddressoftheWOL
enabledNIC,andthesystemwillboot.
Note:IfthesystembootisinterruptedbeforetheOSandtheNICdriverareloaded,the
systemwillnotbeabletoperformWOLagainuntileitherthesystemisrebooted
manuallyandtheOSanddriverareallowedtoloadandresettheNICsWOLregisters,
orA/Cpowertothesystemisremovedforatleast30seconds,resettingtheNIC’sWOL
registers.

upforWOLbydefault.ToturnoffWOL,usethe‘pmedisable=1’keyword
intheloadline.Set‘pmedisable=0’toreenableWOL
5. ForBroadcombasedNICsorLOMS,thekeyword‘magicp=1’mustbeused
toenablethedriverforWOL.Setting‘magicp=0’disablesWOL,disabledis
thedefault.

6. Restarttheserver.Aftertheserverhasrestarted,iftheNICisnotalready
connectedtoaswitchorhub,connectitandshuttheserverdown.
7. Shutthesystemoff.TheconnectionLEDontheNICandswitchorhubwill
remainonindicatingtheNICismonitoringthenetworkforwakeuppackets
directedtoitsMACaddress.
8. SendawakeupsignaltotheMACaddressoftheWOLenabledNIC,andthe
systemwillboot.
Note:IfthesystembootisinterruptedbeforetheOSandtheNICdriverareloaded,the
systemwillnotbeabletoperformWOLagainuntilthesystemisrebootedmanuallyand
theOSanddriverareallowedtoloadandresettheNIC’sWOLregisters.
