Before You Use Your Smartphone
Safety Warnings
Read the following safety warnings carefully before
using your smartphone.
This equipment is intended for use with
power supplied from supplied battery
charger(s) and/or power supply unit(s). Other
usage will invalidate any certification given
to this product and may be dangerous.
Switch off your cell phone when in an
aircraft. The use of cell phones in an aircraft
may be dangerous to the operation of the
aircraft, could disrupt cellular networks, and
may be illegal. Failure to observe this
instruction may lead to suspension or denial
of cell phone services to the offender, legal
action, or both.
Do not use the cell phone or cell phone
equipment when at a refueling point or gas
station.
Observe restrictions on the use of radio
equipment in fuel depots, gas stations,
chemical plants, or where blasting
operations are in progress.
When driving a vehicle, you MUST exercise
proper control of the vehicle at all times.
Observe the following safety precautions
when driving:
Do not use a hand-held telephone or
microphone while you are driving.
When driving, find a safe place to stop
the vehicle before using the phone.
Do not speak into a hands-free
microphone if it will distract you from
driving.

You MUST NOT stop on the hard
shoulder of a motorway to answer or
make a call, except in an emergency.
NOTE: In some areas where electric current
is known to fluctuate, it is recommended that
you plug the charger to an AVR (AC Voltage
Regulator) instead of a direct connection to
a power outlet. Fluctuations in the electric
current may damage the charger and/or the
device.
General Statement on RF Energy
Your phone has a transmitter and a receiver. When
the phone is on, it receives and transmits radio
frequency (RF) energy. When you communicate
with your phone, the system handling your call
controls the power level at which your phone
transmits RF energy.
Proper Disposal
The symbol of the crossed out bin
indicates that the product
(electrical and electronic
equipment) should not be placed
in municipal waste. Please check
local regulations for disposal of
electronic products.

Congratulations on the purchase of your Dell Mini
3iX. This section provides information about setting
up your smartphone.
Smartphone Requirements
To use all of the smartphone features, you need:
A wireless service plan with a carrier
An Internet connection
A computer with a USB 2.0 port
Activating Phone Service
Before you can use any of the smartphone features,
you must activate the smartphone. To activate the
smartphone you must:
Sign up for a service plan with a service
carrier in your area
Register the smartphone with the network
If you purchased this smartphone from a service
carrier, activation may have been done during the
purchase.
Setting Up the Phone for the
First Time
You must install the battery, SIM card, and charge
the battery before you can use your smartphone.
To set up your phone for the first time:
1Open the cover
Slide a finger into the finger slot, and then lift
the cover.

2Install the SIM card
Hold the SIM card with the metal contacts
facing downwards and insert the card into
the SIM card holder.
NOTE: To ensure proper installation, align
the cut corners in the card and the SIM card
slot.
3Install the MicroSD card (if not installed)
aHold the microSD card with the metal
contacts facing upwards, and slide it
into the microSD card slot.
bPress in on the microSD card until it
clicks into place.
4Install the battery
Align the metal contacts on the battery with
the contacts on the battery holder and insert
the battery.
5Close the cover
Insert the tabs on the cover into the slots on
the phone and snap the cover in place.

6Charge the battery
CAUTION: Do not use any non-approved
chargers as they may damage your
smartphone and invalidate any warranties.
NOTE: It takes at least one charging-
discharging cycle for the battery to reach its
peak performance.
aUsing the Mini-USB to USB cable, plug
the power adapter into a power outlet
and then into your smartphone. You can
also charge your smartphone by
connecting to a computer USB port.
bCharge your smartphone for about 2
hours. Ensure that your smartphone is
fully charged by checking the charge
status indicator on the display.
7When charging is complete, press the power
button for 2 seconds to exit the charging
mode.
8Your smartphone is now ready to use.

This section provides information about removal
and replacement of components (SIM card and
microSD card) and charging the battery.
Battery
Charging the Battery
CAUTION: Do not use any non-approved
chargers as they may damage your
smartphone and invalidate any warranties.
NOTE: It takes at least one charging-
discharging cycle for the battery to reach its
peak performance.
1Ensure that the battery is installed.
2Using the Mini-USB to USB cable, plug the
power adapter into a power outlet and then
into your smartphone. You can also charge
your smartphone by connecting to a
computer USB port.
3Charge your smartphone for about 2 hours.
Ensure that your smartphone is fully charged
by checking the charge status indicator on
the display.

1Turn off the smartphone
Press and hold the power button for 3
second, and then tap Power off.

1Open the cover by sliding a finger into the
finger slot, and then lift the cover.
2Press in on the microSD card to eject the
card from the microSD card holder.
3Slide the microSD card out from the microSD
card holder.
4Hold the microSD card with the metal
contacts facing upwards, and slide it into the
microSD card slot.
5Press in on the microSD card until it clicks
into place.
6Close the cover by inserting the tabs on the
cover into the slots on the phone, and then
snap the cover in place.

Mini-USB headsetallows you to listen to
music or a phone conversation. Callers hear
you through the integrated microphone. To
use the headset, connect it to the Mini-USB
port. See “Left View” on page 20.
Stylusallows you to quickly enter text
using the on-screen keyboard and
handwriting tools. See “Selecting an Input
Method” on page 34.
NOTE: Comes only with phones

USB to Mini-USB data cableallows you to
connect your smartphone to a computer for
file transfers and data synchronization (see
“PC Sync Tool” on page 139).

Using the Home Screen
The Home screen provides access to all the applications available on your smartphone. The following are the
applications available on your smartphone:
NOTE: Not all applications are supported in all models and configurations.
Application Description
Phone Allows you to make calls using either the recent caller list, contacts list, or manually
using the numeric keypad.
Browser Allows you to browse the Internet.
Messaging Allows you to send and receive MMS and SMS text messages.
Alarm Allows you to set up, add or delete alarms.
Contacts Allows you to view, search, add, change, or delete contacts.
Email Allows you to send and receive e-mail messages via Internet, SMS, MMS, or WAP
mobile Internet access.
Settings Allows you to set up connections, networks, basic functions, and applications.
Calendar Allows you to set alerts to remind you of events, appointments, and deadlines.

Tasks Time management program that allows you to add time, date, priority, and status to
your tasks.
Calculator Allows you to perform simple calculations.
Notes Allows you to record notes.
World clock Allows you to view the time in cities around the world by enabling you to add clocks

Music Provides a rich music experience with playlist management.
File Mgr Allows you to use and manage the files on the phone or the microSD card.

Moving Items on the Home Screen
1To move an item from your Home screen,
touch and hold the item to open the menu
manager.
2Tap Reorder menu to enter reorder mode.
3Tap and drag the item to its new location.
NOTE: If you want to cancel and exit
the reorder mode screen, press the
Back button.
4When done, tap the Home/Back button to
save and exit the reorder mode.
Removing Items on the Home Screen
1To remove an item from your Home screen,
touch and hold the item to open the menu
manager.
2Tap Delete shortcut.
NOTE: If you want to cancel and exit
the reorder mode screen, press the
Back button.
NOTE: Only icons that the user have
added can be deleted.

Sleep Mode
Your smartphone may automatically enter the sleep
mode after a period of inactivity. You can set the
period of inactivity after which the smartphone
changes to sleep mode using the phone settings
menu. While in sleep mode the display turns off, and
your smartphone consumes lesser battery power.
Activating sleep mode
Short press the Power/Lock button to activate sleep
mode.
Waking up the phone
1To wake up the phone, press the Power/Lock
or the Back/Home, or the Options button.
2Tap and slide the lock panel to unlock.

Phone Lock
While not on a call, you can lock your control
buttons and screen for security.
Locking the phone
1Tap the Settings icon in the Home screen and
tap Security, Phone Lock Settings, Phone
lock.
2Enter a 4-8 digits phone lock password.
3Tap OK to save and exit to the previous
screen.
4Tap Lock now to lock your phone.

1Enter the 4-8 digits phone lock password.
2Tap Unlock to unlock the phone.
Entering Text
When you start a program or select a field that
requires text or numbers, the input panel appears
automatically. You can select an input method and

tapping a number in your contacts list or recent
caller list. You can also dial a number manually

Fixed Dial Number (FDN) list
The Fixed Dial Number list allows you to restrict
outgoing calls from your phone to a preset list of
numbers. To enable this feature, you must know the
SIM PIN2 code for your phone. You can get this
number from your wireless operator, provided this
feature is supported.
Managing the FDN list
1In the Call settings menu, tap Fixed dialing
number.
2Enable FDN. Type in your PIN2 number to
enable this feature.
3Tap Manage FDN list. If you have numbers on
your SIM card you will be able to select from
them. If not, you will be able to add contacts
or numbers to your list.
4To add new numbers, tap Add. Type the name
and number of the contact and then tap
Save. Your FDN list now contains the newly
added contact.

5Continue adding numbers until you have all
the contacts you wish to include on the FDN
list.
You may also edit or delete contacts at any
time.
6To disable FDN functionality, re-select the
FDN Enabled option again.
Call Barring
The call barring screen allows you to enable or
disable a function to restrict outgoing or incoming
calls from a specific number or contact by using a
preset password.
To enable or disable the call barring functions, tap
the option on the screen that you would like to set
up.

Call Forwarding
The Call forwarding option allows you to forward
your smartphone calls directly to voicemail or to
other numbers.
The following options are available when setting up
call forwarding:
Always forward Select to specify a
forwarding number and to enable this
feature. When this feature is enabled, the
Forward when busy, Forward when
unanswered, Forward when unreachable
are disabled.
Forward when busy Select to enable this
feature. When enabled, incoming calls are
forwarded to a voicemail when you are on a
call.
Forward when unanswered Select to
enable this feature. When enabled, incoming
calls are forwarded to a voicemail when
unanswered.
Forward when unreachable Select to
enable this feature. When enabled, calls are
forwarded to a voicemail if an incoming call

Other Basic Call Settings The following are options available in the Other
basic settings screen:
Caller ID Select this check box to hide or
show your number to recipient’s of your call.
When your number shows, your phone
number and Caller ID picture will appear to
people you call, provided the call recipient’s
device supports this feature.
Call waiting Select this check box to
display incoming calls when you are on a
call. Clear the check box to ignore incoming
calls when you are already on a call.
NOTE: When call waiting is set to
ignore incoming calls, routing of the
ignored call is determined by your Call
forwarding settings.
Auto Answer Select this check box to
answer incoming calls automatically without
performing any action.
Auto Redial Select this check box to auto
redial when making a call failed the first time.

The Speed dialing option allows you to set up your
most frequently used numbers for quick dialing.

Editing SMS Messages For Rejected
Calls
This feature allows you to edit a message that will
automatically be sent to the caller after you have
rejected their call.
To save your message, tap the Save icon.

operator and is stored on your SIM card. Use the
Voicemail option to view your voicemail number.

Using the In-call Timer
The in-call timer option allows you to monitor the
duration of your calls. You can set the timer to 30,
60, 90, or 120 seconds. You will hear a tone at the
interval set. You can also use this option to enable
or disable the in-call timer function.
When you have completed setting the time for the
in-call timer function, tap OK to save and exit the
screen.

Number to fetch each time - Specify the
maximum number of emails to fetch on every
connection. You can select 25 Mails, 50
Mails, 100 Mails, or All.

limit for your emails if you wish to set a send/
receive message size limit. You can select

Signature - Select this setting to input your
signature.

To view a picture, tap Pictures in the Home screen.
Browsing Pictures
Your pictures are displayed as thumbnails. Slide
your finger up and down on the list to view the

Deleting a Picture

Changing Picture Settings
To open Picture settings, tap the Options icon then
select Settings.
A list of options appears that includes:
Thumbnail size - You can select from
Large or Small picture display sizes.
Picture sort - You can select to sort
pictures with the newest pictures first
or newest pictures last.
Confirm deletions - Select this check
box if you want confirmations before
deleting pictures from Pictures and the
microSD card.
Slideshow interval - Select how long
each slide plays. The available options
are: 2, 3, or 4 seconds.
Slideshow transition - Select the effect
used when moving from one slide to
another. The available options are:
Fade in & out, Slide left-right, Slide up-
down, and Random selection.
Repeat slideshow - Select this check
box to play the slideshow more than
once.

Using the Video Editor
Use the Video Editor to edit your To view a picture,
tap Pictures in the Home screen.
Using the Storyboard
1In the Home screen, tap the Video Editor icon
to open the Video Editor screen.

4Tap the images that you want to include in

The Recorder feature allows you to capture audio
notes for yourself. To open the Recorder, select

The Calendar lets you assign events such as
appointments or specific tasks to a date or time and

Tasks
Tasks allows you to keep track of tasks you need to
do. To open Tasks, tap Tasks in the Home screen.
Creating New Tasks
1Tap Tasks in the Home screen to open Tasks.
2Tap the Add tab open Create Task screen.
3Enter task title, date and time, task details,
priority, and status.
4Tap the Save tab to save task.
5Tap the Back icon to exit the screen.
Editing Tasks
1In the main Tasks screen, tap the task that
you want to edit.
2The Edit Task screen opens. Make the
required edits to the task.

Advanced Search
1You can use various options to create a very

4Enter the search terms.

Index Statistic
1Use Index statistic to view the number of
records you have in each program. Tap
Search in the Home screen to open Search.
2Tap the Options icon, and tap Index. The
Index screen opens.

Backup
The Backup application allows you to create a
backup file on your SD card for Contacts, SMS,
MMS, Call log, Settings, Tasks, Calendar, Email,
Browser, Notes, Alarm Clock, and Multimedia.
Backup Your Mobile Contacts,
Messages, and Settings
1In the Home screen, tap Backup to open the
Backup screen.
2Tap the items you want to save into the
backup file.
NOTE: By default, all items are
selected.
3Tap the Options icon to open the function
menu.
4Tap To Storage Card.
5Tap OK to accept the provided file name or
use the QWERTY keyboard to change it, and
then tap OK.

Restore Your Mobile Contacts,
Messages, and Settings From the
Backup File
1In the Home screen, tap Backup to open the
Backup screen.
2Tap Restore from the menu.
3Tap the file name of the backup file you want
to restore.
4Tap the items from the backup file that you
want to restore to the smartphone.
5Tap the Options icon to open the function
menu.
6Tap Restore.
7Tap OK to restore.
NOTE: When reverting to the backup
file, the current data of that file in the
smartphone will be overwritten.
8Exit the menu. The selected data from the
backup file is now available for use.
PC Sync Tool
You can synchronize the information on your
computer with the information on your device.
Synchronization compares the data on your device
with your PC and updates both the computer and
your smartphone with the most recent information.
Using synchronization, you can:
Synchronize information to get the latest
information in all locations.
Transfer files between your device and a PC.
Backup data stored on the phone.
NOTE: PC Sync may not be pre-installed on
all devices. Download the latest software
from www.dell.com.
Installing PC Sync Application
Before beginning synchronization, you must install
the PC Sync Tool on your computer.

Installing PC Sync from the microSD card backup
folder on your computer (preferred):
1Backup the data from the microSD card to
your computer.
2From the microSD card backup folder on
your computer, open the ODS (Ophone
Desktop Suite) folder.
3In the ODS folder, double-click the
appropriate file (Windows® 7, Windows
Vista® or Windows® XP).
Follow the instructions on the wizard to complete
the installation.
Installing PC Sync from the microSD card:
1Backup the data from the microSD card to
your computer.
2Connect your smartphone to a USB
connector on your computer with the USB to
mini-USB cable that shipped with your
phone.
3In the menu that appears on your screen, tap
UMS Mode (USB Mass Storage Mode).
Your computer displays the phone memory as
Removable disk (X:) in My Computer, where
X is the drive letter on your computer. The
drive letter on your computer may vary.
4Double-click Removable disk (X:).
5In the ODS folder, double-click the
appropriate file ((Windows Vista® or
Windows® XP).
Follow the instructions on the wizard to complete
the installation.
NOTE: You may be instructed to connect or
reconnect the phone to your computer to
complete the installation.

Connecting the Smartphone
After installing the PC Sync Tool, connect a USB
cable to the mini USB port on the device and to a
PC. The PC will detect your device automatically.
NOTE: You will be prompted to change the
phone USB mode. Select SYNC MODE to
enable synchronization via USB cable.
NOTE: Download the latest PC Sync Tool
from www.dell.com.
Using the PC Sync Tool
Once the connection is established between your
device and the PC, you can start synchronization.
The information you can synchronize include
Contacts, Calendar, Task, SMS, MMS, and Email.
