PORT ST. LUCIE — For one Port
St. Lucie couple, the joy of finding
out they were expecting a baby was
tempered with the realization that
the father-to-be would not be present for the delivery.
Sergeant Daniel Rasik was half
way around the world serving with
the U.S. Army in Afghanistan when
his wife, Genevieve, was due to give
birth. While disheartened that they
would be apart, the expectant parents reached out to their doctor, Dr.
Pete Papapanos with Physicians To
Women of Stuart, with an unusual
request to use Skype to bridge the
distance and allow the soldier to
witness the birth of his son.
Like many military wives, Mrs.
Rasik understands the sacrifice her
husband makes to serve his country. A Mortar Infantry Sergeant
serving in the U.S. Army’s 10th
Mountain Division, her husband is
currently serving in Afghanistan for
a third deployment, in addition to
having served a tour in Iraq. Mrs.
Rasik was reluctant to admit she felt
any fear or sadness, along with the
obvious joy, when she learned she
was pregnant. She recognized that
she would not be the first or the last
military wife to give birth without
the presence of her spouse, but she
was thrilled when they learned they
had another option.
The use of Skype during a delivery was a first for Dr. Papapanos

and the Physicians To Women practice. While hospital rules generally
prevent the use of any recording
devices such as smartphones or
tablets during procedures, Physicians To Women was open to the
idea.
“We always try to do everything
we can to meet the needs of our
patients. We were committed to
making it happen as long as we

were able to follow
proper medical protocols,” said Dr.
Papapanos.
On Nov. 13, 2013,
Mrs. Rasik gave
birth to a healthy 9pound,
6-ounce
baby boy via Caesarean section at Martin Medical Center in
Stuart. While Sergeant Rasik was

physically present in
the delivery room, his presence was
felt as his intense gaze and proud
smile could be seen via Skype on an
iPad held caringly by family and Dr.
Papapanos. Everyone could hear
the supportive father’s excited
voice, even over the cries of the
newborn child.
“While every delivery is special,
this was one of the most emotional
and memorable deliveries I’ve been
involved with. To be able to have
someone who is thousands of miles
away serving our country watch his
child being born – it was an amazing experience for everyone in the
delivery room that day,” said Dr.
Papapanos.
Mrs. Rasik is looking forward to
her husband’s return at the end of
his deployment this spring. Father
and son will meet in person for the
first time.
“It’s difficult to put into words
how incredible it was to have Dan
there with us through Skype,” said
Mrs. Rasik. “I’m so grateful to Physicians To Women, Dr. Papapanos

Single stream recycling begins May 1
For Hometown News
NewsFP@hometownnewsol.com
PORT ST. LUCIE —Residents
will be able to recycle with ease
when single single stream recycling begins on May 1.
This exciting new program is
the result of the efforts of the City
of Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie County
and Waste Pro working together
to reduce costs and increase revenue through the added participation in recycling.
Single stream recycling refers to
a system in which both the collection and processing systems

are designed to handle all recyclables such as paper, plastics,
metals and other containers. This
streamline process will reduce
the carbon footprint and help
maintain a clean and healthy
environment.
In March and April 2014, Waste
Pro will be delivering a free,
brand new 64-gallon recycling
cart to each household. Residents
are asked to use the cart in place
of the blue and green bins beginning May 1.
All household recyclables will
conveniently go into one cart

which will reduce sorting efforts
for residents. The blue and green
bins hold 28 gallons of recyclables combined. The larger 64gallon cart can hold more than
double that amount of recyclables, plus there's no need to
separate items.
Waste Pro is asking residents to
assist their out-of-town or snow
bird neighbors by moving the
newly delivered cart to the side or
rear of the home to ensure it's
there when the residents return.
Added recyclable items
Not only is single stream recy-

cling easy and convenient, but
even more items can be recycled.
In addition to what you already
place in the blue and green bins,
you can now also recycle the following items:
•Pots
•Pans
•Metal lids
•Metal toys
•Cookie sheets
•Manual can openers
For more information or questions regarding single stream recycling, contact Waste Pro at (772)
595-9390.

PORT ST. LUCIE — On
Saturday, Jan. 11, Port St.
Lucie received a report of
fraud by impersonation.
Police spoke to the victim,
whom told the officer that
he received a phone call
from Lt. Little of the Port St.
Lucie Police Department
Traffic Division and gave a
badge number of 76723.
The victim told the officer
that the alleged Lieutenant
told him that he ran a traffic
light and needed to pay for
the fine or he would have a
warrant out for his arrest.
The victim became suspicious of the call and notified the Port St. Lucie Police
Department.
The city of Port St. Lucie

Department do not contact
citizens over the phone for

rank of Lieutenant Little
and anyone receiving similar phone calls should be on
high alert and realize that
the caller is a fraud.
Port St. Lucie Police have

10 residents with the same
type of call from the suspect(s). It should be noted
that the St. Lucie County

IMPROVING TREASURE COAST HOMES SINCE

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A
big announcement was made
recently by Governor Rick
Scott that he had approved $9
million in the state budget for
the Boys & Girls Clubs
throughout Florida. But long
before Governor Scott had
the opportunity to approve
the budget, Representative
Larry Lee was working the
legislative process to help get
the much needed funding for
the Florida Alliance of Boys &
Girls Club.
Getting the appropriation
request through the maze
known as the “State Budget
Appropriations Process” is
not easy. However that didn’t
stop the efforts of Rep. Lee
who personally carried the
Boys & Girls Clubs Budget
Appropriation
request
through the process including many Appropriation Subcommittees and full Committee; as well as getting the
Florida House and Senate to
agree.
State Representative Lee
saw the need to provide more
funding for Delinquency Pre-

reading, computer work,
delinquency prevention and
mentoring programs. Boys &
Girls Clubs are the place
where young people are provided with the tools and guidance to achieve academic
success, become community
leaders and lead healthy
lifestyles.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of
St. Lucie County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
providing youth with a world
class Boys & Girls Club experience, assuring that success
is within reach for every
young person who walks
through our doors, and that
every Club member graduates high school with a plan
for the future, demonstrating
good character and citizenship and living healthy
lifestyles.
With 17 locations throughout the county, the Boys &
Girls Clubs programs serve a
diverse group of kids age 518. The 2,000 members come
from a variety of backgrounds.

Taking off with the Falcons

You don’t have to
spend a fortune

M

ost of the people I
work with are on a
budget and trying to
make every penny count. The
vast majority of people who
call me looking to upgrade
their old machines are doing
it on a fixed income and
looking to either get their old
machine fixed or replaced
with as little out of pocket
expense as possible.
Usually money is a big
issue and all they are trying to
do is either get their old
machine running the way it
was or replace it with something that is capable of doing
the same things they were
able to do with their old
machine.
When I wrote my column
last week on getting a laptop
over a desktop I wrote it with
the cost factor in mind – I
wasn’t thinking about the
“power user” or people with
cash to burn, I was thinking
of the people who call me day
after day who are thinking
about replacing their old XP
or Vista machine and are
worried that a new machine
will still be able to do what
they were able to do on their
old system.
With new machines
starting at around $300 these
days computers are no longer
the high end purchase that
they were ten years ago. It is
no longer necessary to go and
spend $1,200 to $2,000 just to
have a machine that will surf
the web, send and receive
email and do the book
keeping. Even video conferencing with programs like
Skype (which is a pretty
resource intensive task) is
well within the capabilities of
today’s entry level $300
machines. And (as I wrote in
my last column on the
subject) a laptop - even the
entry level ones – usually
come with everything one
needs to perform all of the
basic tasks that nine out of 10
of the people who call me are
trying to do.
Right out of the box the
entry level machine will run
circles around the ancient XP
machines and even some of
the “newer” Vista machines
that are out there. And with
the price of a machine so
much lower than it was 10
years ago, sinking money into
an old sick machine doesn’t
make sense after a certain
point like it does with a
machine that cost five times
as much. A $300 repair on a

COMPUTE
THIS
SEAN MCCARTHY

$1,500 machine is somewhat
reasonable. A $300 repair on a
$300 computer? Not so much.
We live in an age where
computers have become
practically disposable.
OK, so let’s say you’re one of
the rare ones that call me and
have money to burn and are
you’re also a “power user.” You
run graphic intensive
programs like video editors or
maybe you’re a serious
gamer. Your requirements are
going to be much higher than
the average user who just
uses their machine for email
and surfing the web.
Once we get past the entry
level requirements and stare
getting into “power user”
territory, then things like
upgrading components (like
a new video card) and
adequate cooling become
much more of an issue. With
a laptop, you really don’t have
the flexibility that you have
with a desktop – adding a
high end video card for
instance isn’t going to happen
and running resource
intensive programs (like
some of the newer shoot-emup games that are out now)
aren’t going to work as well as
they will on a desktop. The
desktop’s larger size does
allow for better cooling,
component level repairs and
better performance.
The person who calls me
looking for advice on the
purchase of a new machine is
usually running an old
machine. Most of the time the
machine they are looking to
replace is older than five years
(frequently eight to 10 years)
and they use the system to
check email and maybe they
are wanting to run Skype to
talk to their grandkids. They
don’t have a lot of money to
burn and are OK with the idea
that the machine won’t last
forever. The entry level laptop
will work just fine and even if
it dies in five years that’s OK,
at this point they are indeed
disposable.

Recycling should be mandatory
When my brothers were kids, they use to get an old
grain bag and go picking up bottles from the side of the
road. They turned them in for deposit.
Maine put back the bottle deposit several years ago. I
thought kids would still be picking up the bottles on the
beach and on the side of the road. Instead, early one
morning, I saw seniors collecting bottles for returns. I had
nothing but admiration for them. I do think that recycling
is smarter than (having) deposits. Florida should require
all disposable plastics and glass to be recycled. (There
would be) no paper/plastic cartons of milk. No foil/paper
snack drinks of juice.
Allow only recyclable, materials on the grocers’ shelf. I
thought that all glass should be recycled, not just drinks,
but mayonnaise and pickle jars, as well.
As for someone taking recycled cans out of the trash,
perhaps he was hard up. We were taught, “There, but for
the grace of God, go I.”

I just wanted to rave about the nice arts and crafts show
I went to last week.
I just have a question for everybody out there: why do
people bring dogs to
an arts and crafts show? Do they think the dogs know
about arts and crafts?
I saw several people, some who even had dogs in a baby
carriage. One person
had two dogs on a leash. They bark and there’s not much
room. I am a pet owner and a pet lover, but I know my dogs
do not like craft shows and people do like to look at your
dogs, smell them or watch them whatever they’re doing.
Use some common sense, people.

Some countries have no anchor babies. A baby is only a
citizen of the country in which he is born if his parents are
citizens.
Perhaps someone did the math and figured out anchor
babies will grow up to pay taxes and Social Security. Perhaps the base needed for increasing number of seniors
who can only be supported with the influx of immigrants,
legal or otherwise.
True, their parents presently seem to be crippling the
economy with their draw on the Social Security, educational, medical, welfare, legal and other services, but
maybe it will balance out somewhere down the line.
Maybe not. I am an English major, not a math major.

When I was a kid...
I walked back and forth from school four times a day, for
more than 2 miles when I was a kid.

Nowadays, the busses stop every couple of blocks, while
parents sit in the cars waiting with the kids. Isn’t it a waste of
taxpayer’s money? With all these new sidewalks, can’t the
kids walk to the bus stops? No wonder Americans are so
lazy.

Bicyclists, stop taking up all the parking
spaces
Why are bicyclists going everywhere in groups, and
parking their vehicles in the very limited parking spaces
there, then taking bicycles out of their cars and pedaling
away?
Then, they go biking for miles, and people trying to spend
some time on the beach have to leave because there's no
place to park.
Parking is always a problem, but to park and then leave to
go elsewhere is just wrong, shows total and complete lack of
consideration for others and should be stopped immediately.

Stop passing on double yellow lines
Twice in the last month as I drove through my residential
neighborhood, going the speed limit, I might add, I have
had two vehicles pass me on the double yellow line.
When has it become legal to pass on the double yellow?
This is happening more and more and I am just appalled
that someone can have such blatant disregard for the safety
of others to save a few moments by speeding through a residential neighborhood.
These are not small vehicles, either. If you see yourself in
this letter, take a breath and take your foot off the gas and
just relax. A few moments more to get where you are going
won't kill you and just might save someone.

Don’t judge
I wish those who talk all about the people on food
stamps would just shut up. They have no idea of what people go through or their situation. They complain about
people buying food and then getting into a nice car or
wearing nice jewelry.
How can they be certain that the person shopping isn’t
shopping for somebody else?
My daughter shops for me because I’m homebound. She
has a decent vehicle and has a couple rings on her fingers.
She is by no means rich, but she doesn’t “look” as though
she’s poor. She goes to the grocery store for me once a
week to get me a few things.
If somebody had the audacity to look at her or follow her
out to the car to see what she was driving, I’d hope they
would follow her to my house because I’d have a mouthful
to give them.
There’s nobody on the face of the earth who has the right
to judge someone based on what they drive or what they
wear. Those who do should be ashamed of themselves.
Don’t forget, one day you’ll sit and be judged.

Talking about teachers
I’m friends with some local teachers. It’s unbelievable
that these are the same folks who sit inside a classroom
and teach our kids. They have no use of proper English and
are more judgmental and hypocritical than anybody I
know.

A teacher sounds off
I'm a teacher and I’m sick of people thinking it’s such an
easy job. We deal with disrespectful kids and even worse,
their disrespectful parents. They come to class because
they have to, not because they want to. The parents make
them show up because they will face jail time if they don't.
Those certain few really ruin the teaching and learning
experience for those who really want to be there. Something should be done to eradicate the schools of these nuisances.

Shop when financing and
trade-in when buying a car
EARL STEWART

Credit unions are often
the best source of funds for
buying a car. Because they
get special tax breaks from
the government not available to banks, they usually
have the lowest finance
rates. Even if you don’t
belong to a credit union,
there are several you can
join for a nominal fee. You
should also get a financing
quote from the bank you do
business with.
Also, give the dealer that
you are buying from an
opportunity to beat the
rates you were quoted.
Sometimes he can.
When you are taking
delivery of your car, you will
be asked to consider buying
products like extended warranties, maintenance plans,
road hazard insurance, GAP
insurance, roadside assistance, credit life insurance,
etc. My suggestion is that
you do not make a snap
decision on these products
at the last minute. You
should get complete information on each product

and determine if it has
value for you. You may
already have coverage for
some insurance products in
policies you already own.
With extended warranties
and maintenance be sure
you understand what is
covered and what is not
covered and what the
deductibles are.
You should get at least
three bids on the value of
your trade-in. You can get
some pretty good guidance
from
Kelly
Bluebook,
www.kbb.com
and
www.edmunds.com.
Make an appointment to
drive your trade-in to show
the used car manager at a
dealer who is franchised to
sell the make you own. A
Chevrolet dealer will likely
pay you more for a Chevrolet trade-in than a Ford
dealer
would.
That’s
because people generally
will shop for a used Chevy
from a Chevrolet dealer.
Get one or two more bids
from other dealers in the
same make. If you are near
a CarMax store, you should
take your car there too.
They regularly buy cars like
this for their inventory. The
price you will be quoted is
referred to as the ACV
which stands for “actual
cash value.” This is the

wholesale value of your
trade in.
Don’t confuse the ACV
with the trade-in allowance
that the dealer you are buying from gives you. The
trade-in allowance includes
part of the markup on the
vehicle you are purchasing.
You have probably read ads
saying “Minimum $4,000
allowance on all trades.” It’s
not hard to offer thousands
more on a trade-in than its
ACV (true wholesale value)
when you mark up the new
car several thousand dollars
more. Be sure that you
explain that want to compare the ACV of your tradein. Tell them you want the
markup on the price of the
car you are buying discounted, not added on to the ACV
of your trade. Remember,
however, that if you sell your
trade-in to another party,
you lose the advantage of
deducing the trade-in from
the price your sales tax in
calculated on. At 6 percent,
you would pay an extra $600
in sales tax for a trade-in
with a $10,000 ACV.
With competitive bids on
the car you are buying, the
interest rate on your financing, and your trade-in ACV
you are sure to minimize the
total cost of that new or
used car.

I

f you have read my
earlier columns you
know how important it is
to get several competitive
prices from different car
dealers on the car you are
buying. Equally important is
to get at least three
prices/bids on your financing and the true value of
your trade-in.
The absolute worst thing
you can do is to tell the dealer, “all I care about is keeping my payments under ‘$X’
per month” and not know
what the interest rate, terms,
or products are included in
the payments.
Part of the profit a dealer
makes on his cars is called
“F&I income” and averages
from $500 to as much as
$2,000 per car sold. You can
do your homework and buy
your car at a very good
price, but by not shopping
your financing, you can pay
the dealer thousands of
dollars in finance profits.

Rising country star to headline Black Box Theatre
For Hometown News
NewsFP@hometownnewsol.com
FORT PIERCE — Tom Jackson
will perform at the Black Box Theatre Saturday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. as
the part of the new On The Verge
Concert Series featuring up and
coming artists presented by WAVE
92.7 and the Sunrise Theatre.
Singer, songwriter, musician, but
above all, Mr. Jackson is an entertainer and local Jupiter resident. He
compels an audience as though he
has been on stage all his life. Jackson’s brand of music is a new driving; aggressive country likened to a
combination of Jason Aldean meets
Charlie Daniels.

Since the debut of his first album
Southern Thang in 2007, he has
been hard at work in the studio
writing and recording a new album
that promises to be well worth the
wait. Summer 2012 brought the
release of his highly anticipated
second studio album Keep it Country. This album produced in
Nashville by Joe Caverlee, delivered more of the high energy music
and performances that Tom Jackson fans have come to love and
expect. The first single My Angel
Loves the Devil Out of Me, also signifies the release of Tom's first ever
full length music video produced
by Rodolphe Pierre-Louis.
His
songwriting comes from the life he

lives and speaks to the heart of his
fans.
His songwriting comes from the
life he lives and speaks to the heart
of his fans. “These aren't just lyrics I
made up. These stories in song talk
about everything we country folks
love,” Mr. Jackson said. He’s made a
lasting impression on his fans for
being a captivating entertainer who
is always more than willing to hang
out after a show to meet and thank
each and every one of his fans.
Mr. Jackson has worked with
Nashville Song Writers, Amy Chappell, Kevin Ray, George Boettcher,
Jennifer Nelson and Brian Eckert.
He recorded his album with Greg
Strizek at Sound Kitchen Studio A,

and Eckert Labs, Nashville, TN.
Tom has shared the stage with
Nashville Recording Artists: Jason
Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Little Big
Town, Billy Currington, Jake Owen,
Luke Bryan, Craig Morgan, Randy
Houser, Craig Campbell, Darius
Rucker, Josh Thompson, Lee Brice,
Justin Moore, Eric Church, Colt
Ford and recently, Brantley Gilbert,
Alan Jackson and Randy Travis.
Tickets to Tom Jackson, priced at
$10 in advance or $15 at the door,
are available at the Box Office at
772-461-4775 or visit us online at
www.SunriseTheatre.com.
The Sunrise Theatre is located at
117 South Second Street, Fort
Pierce.

Lucky bamboo care and facts
verybody needs a good
luck charm and I can’t
think of a better way to
go then with a lucky Bamboo.
These interesting plants are
extremely tough and surprisingly easy to care for. These
plants do not require a lot of
light and can grow in many
places where other plants will
not easily thrive such as in a
bathroom. The plant has only
one basic need and that is
water.
The Lucky Bamboo is
actually not a bamboo at all.
Its botanical name is known
as Dracaena Sanderana. It is
also known as the ribbon
plant.
Many Feng Shui master

recommend this plant
because the plant can create a
space where you feel energized and less stressed. I
personally have one in every
room and it is one of my most
favorite plants. I have them in
several locations, one on the
porch, another in the kitchen
and yet another in my office.
They do well in almost any
lighting condition. When I feel
stressed out from a hard day, I
often just look at the plant and
think and it almost always
gives me a feeling of comfort.
You can purchase Lucy
Bamboo in a couple of
different ways. Sometimes
you can find them already
potted in all flavors of

Taking care of Lucky
Bamboo is very simple and
worry free. All you need is to
keep the plant in clean water.
It is a good idea to change the
water once a week or so. If you
have city water, let the water
stand for 24- hours before
putting the plant in it so the
chlorine has a chance to
dissipate. Better yet, use
distilled water. If you have a

as is. You can add a diluted
water-soluble houseplant
fertilizer but it is not necessary.

of ages and skill levels
allowing for everyone to have
fun and compete, if they
wish, against players with the
same abilities.
Each event is a shotgun
start, allowing for everyone to
start and finish at about the
same time.
The schedule for 2014 is
starting to shape up with the
first event being held at
Atlantis Country Club on Jan.
18. To date there are planned
events at Westchester

Vicky. “I have a lot of fun
setting up these events.”
While most would think
that the logistics that go with
putting together so many
outings at so many private
clubs, that is not the case.
“Getting the word out
about us has been the most
challenging,” Vicky stated.
“Everyone is thrilled to hear
about us when they do find
out about us.”
While you don’t have to pay
the GLOF membership fee to
participate in any of the
group’s events, those who do
pay the $50 annual fee enjoy
better prices for events, and
other benefits. You can join as
a single or get your group of
golf buddies to join with you.
Events are not set up with
any particular type of play.
This means you and your
four-some, or the people
you're paired with, can
decide amongst yourselves

Breakers Ocean Course,
Monarch Country Club, Boca
Lago Country Club, Martin
Downs, and Bear Lakes. More
courses and dates will fill in
over the next several weeks.
The list of courses where
GLOF has held an event since
1998 numbers well into the
thirties. Some of the most
desired clubs at which to tee
it up are on this growing list.
All the events take place on
weekends, allowing us
working stiffs the opportunity
to enjoy them as well.
