Beforeyoubeginmowing
• Lawnmowersareusefulpiecesofmachinery,butthey
canalsoinjureyouorothersifcareisnotused.
• Walkaroundtheareaandidentifyobstaclesthatmight
getinyourway.
• Obstaclesthatshouldbemovedincludegarbage,rocks,
sportsequipment,sticks,equipment,partsandwire.
• Otherobstaclesincludehills,ditches,trees,stumps,
buildings,sidewalksanddriveways.
• Afterdeterminingtheobstacles,visuallyplanoutthe
pathyouwilltakewiththemower.
• Rememberthatobstaclesarehardertoseeintallgrass,
weedsorbrush.
Next,inspectthelawnmower
• Checktheowner’smanualforspecificinstructions.
• Makesureallprotectiveguardsareinplace.
• Determinethatsteeringisresponsivebeforeusing.
• Testthebrakes.
• Makesurethetiresareproperlyinflatedandchecktheoil.
Wearingtherightpersonalprotectiveequipment(PPE)

• Youshouldwear:
 Sturdy,closed-toed,non-slipshoes
Safetyglasses or goggles
Hearingprotection

Turnoffthemowerwhenpeopleapproach.
Usecautionwhenmovingonsteepslopes.
Removesafetyguardsfromamower.
Fuelthemowerwhiletheengineishot.
Allowotherstorideonthemowerwithyou.
Operatingalawnmower
• Readtheoperator’smanual.Knowthepurposeofallcontrols,gaugesanddials.
• Learnthesafespeed,slopecapabilities,brakingandsteeringmethods,
turningradius,andoperatingclearancesofthemower.And,knowhow
tostopthemachinequicklyincaseofanemergency.
Note to trainer: Take some time to discuss the specific safety features of the
mowers your operation uses.
• Don’tstartamowerinanenclosedarea,suchasagarage,
toavoidbuildingupdangerousvapors.
• Don’tmowovergravel,stonesorhardobjectssuchaspipes,
rocksorsidewalks.
• Ifanyonecomesnearamower,shutitoff.Don’tmownearchildren.
• Setthebrakes,turnofftheengineandremovethekeybeforeleavingthemower.
• Beawarethatthemowerbladesmaycontinuetorotateforsometimeafter
youturnthemoweroff.
• Don’tparkamoweronahill.Whenyoudoleaveamowerunattended,
lockthebrakesifalockingmechanismisavailable.
Whileyouareoperatingalawnmower
• Keepbothfeetonthefootrestsordesignatedareasofthemower.
• Usecautionwhenmowingaroundlowhangingbranchesandshrubs.
• Alwayslookbehindyouforsmallchildren,petsorobstructions,beforebackingthemower.
• Donotplacehandsorfeetunderthedeckwhenoperating
orwhentheengineisrunning.
• Donotpointthedischargetowardpeople,animalsorbuildings.
• Usespecialcarewhenoperatinginpopulatedorcongestedareas.
Somemoresafelawnmowingrules
• Donottouchhotmotorparts.
• Alwaysrefueloutdoors.Donotsmokewhilerefueling.
• Neverfillthegasolinetankonthemoweriftheengineishot.
Anygasoline,whichisspilled,shouldbewipedupimmediately.
• Atnotimeshouldextraridersbeallowedonthemower.
Seriousinjuryordeathcanresultfromfallingoffthemowerandbeingrunover.
