HEATING ELEMENTS
G
lass is becoming an increasingly
popular material in the design com-
munity, as its sleek transparency
imparts a modern, upscale design element to a
product. And when glass is infused with a heat
generating capability, the combination further
extends the design utility of the material by per-
mitting the creation of heating appliances made
almost entirely of glass. Not surprisingly, the
concept emerged in Europe, where bold designs
are more quickly embraced and where comfort
space heating is more widely used.
The glass radiator pictured above was
designed by Kinon Aachen, GmbH, Aachen,
Germany, which is a subsidiary of Saint Gobain
Deutsche Glass, also in Aachen. The unit is
part of a product line called SGG Thermovit
Elegance, so named because it uses SGG
Thermovit heat-generating glass.
The glass radiators can be used to heat a
room inconspicuously, or they can serve as a
visual focal point when highlighted by other
design elements, as in the image above. When
mounted vertically on a bathroom wall with
the towel bar accessory, the panels double as
towel warmers. The Diamant model, pictured
above, uses fully transparent, extra-clear,
low-iron glass. The Charme features a screen
printed grid motif on the glass. More design
motifs will become available in the future,
including the option of custom designs. The
Mirastar uses reflective glass to combine the
functions of a heater, a towel warmer, and an
anti-condensation mirror.
Designed for the European market, the
glass radiators operate on 220/230 VAC and
generate heat at about 1,000 W/m2. The
units come in four sizes:
600 mm x 400 mm (23.62 in. x 15.75 in.): 240
W max. power, and 0.24 kWh energy use.
1,000 mm x 500 mm (39.37 in. x 19.69 in.):
500 W max. power, and 0.50 kWh energy use.
1,200 mm x 600 mm ( 47.24 in. x 23.62 in.):
720 W max. power, and 0.72 kWh energy use.
1,500 mm x 700 mm (59.06 in. x 27.56 in.):
1,050 W max. power, and 1.05 kWh energy use.
Stainless steel, chrome or brass fittings are
available in the form of supporting feet for
freestanding floor use, or as brackets for wall
mounting. The only visible wire on the panel is

I
would like to relate a little piece of history
because I believe it has a direct bearing on any
trade association’s activities today.
In 1823, John Cleves Symmes proposed an expe-
dition to the inter ior of the Earth by way of the
North or South Poles. He believed fervently that
the Earth was hollow and comprised of concentric
spheres with a common access through a large hole
at each pole. Eventually, he submitted his plan for
an expedition to the center of the Earth to Congress
for funding.
The good news is that his proposal was defeated; the
bad news is that 25 Members of Congress voted for it.
This true story illustrates an important point.
Individual congressmen, senators and state legis-
lators may well be as ill equipped today to make
technical judgments as they were in 1820. Business
and technical expertise has always been under-
represented in Congress and state legislatures.
The overwhelming majority of elected representa-
tives on the national and state levels are lawyers,
not engineers or businessmen. And most ranking
congressional or state legislative staffers, like their
bosses, have legal rather than technical or business
backgrounds.
As representatives of business and industry, we
must take the initiative in delivering the expertise
of our members to Congress as a resource. The
decisions affecting our members that legislators
and other government officials make in the future
will require that technical issues be understood and
incorporated into the decision-making process.
Imagine an energy policy, for example, designed
exclusively by lawyers and economists, without the
technical assessments of engineers and scientists
and the real world, commercial expertise of busi-
nesspeople.
There is an old tool already in place at GAMA
to h elp preve nt su ch an occu rrenc e. We ha ve
used it many times, but it is still one of the most
effective tools we have — our plant visits pro-
gram. Establishing good business relationships
with a Member of Congress, a state legislator,
or a staff member — a relationship started or
nourished through a plant visit — is an effec-
tive way to make sure that our industries’ voices
are heard when policy makers are considering
issues that affect us.
We invest a lot of time taking the facts and
figures of our industries to decision makers,
but seeing is still believing. Hosting a legis-
lator on a plant tour enables us to showcase
what a real-world company does, how clean
America’s plants are, how well American work-
ers are treated, and how government regula-
tions have a direct impact on our businesses. A
government official leaves a plant having seen
his or her constituents working in real jobs and
understanding how a company in that district
will be affected by what happens in Washington
or the state capital.
The resolution of issues affecting our industries
won’t wait for us, but the outcome can be influ-
enced by good business relationships with deci-
sion makers begun through plant visits. GAMA
targets congressional or state legislative committees
that have jurisdiction over the issues affecting our
industries. The legislators on these committees can
become our most effective supporters and our first
line of defense against bad public policy. With the
active participation of American businesses in the
program, our industries can be heard in the most
effective way.

Straightshot M4 Microdebrider by
Medtronic Xomed, Inc., Minneapolis,
Minn. and its industrial design firm,
Metaphase Design Group, St. Louis,
Mo.
The Straightshot M4 is a microde-
brider — a surgical handpiece used by
ear, nose and throat surgeons as a cut-
ting tool for the removal of tissue such
as polyps during nasal sinus surgery. Its
design reflects several advancements
over existing product offerings, includ-
ing state-of-the-art aesthetic styling,
precision handling and grip control.
The Straightshot M4 brings three
“firsts” to the market: it is the only
microdebrider that rotates just at the tip
of the cutting blade; it uses a precision
finger wheel control to rotate the cut-
ting window; and flexible silicone mate-
rial in the primary grip area of the
handpiece helps stabilize the instrument
in the hand for more precise control.
“The designers of the product really
did their research,” said judge Chris
Gilbert. “I’m surprised that nobody has
used a finger wheel control for this
product before. Gilbert also said the
winning entry “really leveraged materi-
als,”noting that the materials were criti-
cal to the design of this product, reduc-
ing weight and size, and fitting the hand.
The finger wheel represents a marked
improvement over dials used to rotate
straight tips on some devices. Because
the wheel requires just a single finger to
start blade rotation,it is much less awk-
ward and requires fewer changes in sur-
geons’grip postures during surgery.
